Light A Candle Today!
In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

Eve of All Hallows
by Tasha Halbert

In the dark of the night the small figures roam,
looking for candy and treats to bring home.
Is there a shadow that hovers quite near?
or is it that once there was something to fear.

The ancients prepared for this evening to scry
Seeking the spirits that might just pass by.
Knowledge to gain is the theme of the night,
Let us be cautious and ask what seems right.

Treats are important, tricks are no fun,
Sacred the ceremonies soon to be done.
While children must sleep, spirits wait to come in
for those who are waiting to speak with their kin.

For All Hallows eve is so wonderous indeed,
with treats for all ages, according to need.

Llewellyn’s Spell A Day

Jack-o’-Lantern Spell

One of my favorite childhood memories is carving a jack-o’- lantern and setting it outside for the whole neighborhood to see. A jack-o’- lantern’s warm glow can imbue magical feelings and deter negativity—they hide magic in plain sight.

This spell requires a pumpkin, a sharp serrated blade, a spoon, a bowl, a tealight candle, and a lighter.

Cut a circle on the top of the pumpkin. Remove the seeds with a spoon, place them in a bowl, and dispose of them outside if possible to give a treat to wildlife. Carve a face in the pumpkin that feels magical and alert. When you’re done, light the tealight and place it inside the pumpkin. Tap the knife against the pumpkin three times to awaken its spirit. Say:

Jack-o’-lantern, I call you forth to
create a magical community! May all
who see you feel pure magic! Protect
us against those who mean harm.

Place the jack-o’-lantern outside somewhere safe facing the street. Replace nightly with a fresh tealight to recharge the magic.
Feline Protection

Today is National Cat Day in the United States. Though you may not have a cat of your own, you can connect and work with feline energies during this time. One energy of the cat that you can tap into is that of protection. A familiar works with their witch and looks out for them. Bast is an excellent goddess to work with, and you can call on her for help when you need protection for yourself or others. Create a small representation of Bast to carry with you. You can use clay, as it is easily molded and dries quickly. Focus on Bast as you mold your clay and say:

Goddess Bast, enchant this charm.
Allow it to shield me from harm.
Xochiquetzal’s Spicy Chocolate

It’s National Chocolate Day. Chocolate, called the food of the gods, has a rich history in Mexico, beginning in the Aztec and Mayan cultures. So let’s create the drink of Aztec goddess Xochiquetzal. She has dominion over sex, childbearing, creativity, flowers, hummingbirds, and butterflies. She manifests for feather-workers and metalworkers. Xochiquetzal loves weavers, painters, sculptors, florists, homemakers, sex workers, mothers, pregnant women, and midwives.

For plant energy, pin Aztec marigold (Tagetes erecta) to your clothing, hair, or hat. Then make the spicy chocolate.

  • 3/4 cup quality dark chocolate chips
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • Pinch of coarse sea salt
  • 1 chili pepper, cut vertically and seeded
  • 4 Mexican cinnamon sticks
  • Sweetener (optional)

Whisk the chocolate chips in 3/4 cup milk in a pot on a stove set at medium. Whisk in the rest of the milk briskly for several minutes until well blended. Then whisk in the ground cinnamon, vanilla, and sea salt. Blend well.

With the heat on medium high, steep the chili pepper and a halved cinnamon stick in the mixture for ten minutes in the pan with the cover on. Then remove the cover and discard the solid ingredients. Whisk in sweetener if desired. Pour the spicy chocolate into three small cups and serve with Mexican cinnamon sticks.
Bless This Desk

During the winter months I spend more time at my writing desk, where many magical parts of me come together. Today, let us bless our desks. Clear the desktop and wipe it down with a damp cloth. Say:

May water bless this desk with fluidity.

Gently stir the air over the desk as you say:

May air bless this desk with new beginnings, the birth of ideas, and the joy of creation.

Set a lamp and your computer on the desk and say:

May fire bless me with clarity, vision, and connectivity.

Place a rock or crystal on the desk and say:

May earth bless this desk with stability.

As you sit down at your desk, bless yourself and your creativity:

May I be happy and prolific in my creation, speaking and writing what needs to be said. May I be kind and wise so that my writing inspires and encourages those in need. So be it.
Dream Breakthrough Spell

This dream spell is for breaking through a stubborn challenge or moving forward in any area of life where you’ve been feeling blocked. Do this just before bed.

If you have runes, pull the Dagaz rune (Î) out of your set. Otherwise, draw it on a stamp-size scrap of cardboard. Hold the rune ( letter side) against your forehead. Relax and bring to mind whatever you’d like to shift in a positive way. Don’t try to be positive about it: feel everything you feel about the issue. Also bring to mind the options as you see them (or the lack thereof ). Then set the intention to direct all the energy of your thoughts and feelings about the situation or challenge into the rune, letting them drain from your body and mind. Place the rune under your pillow. As soon as you wake up in the morning (and if you wake up in the night), immediately write down any dreams you remember. The key to your breakthrough will be contained within them.
Finding Your Shadow Self

Shadows fill the sky today as a solar eclipse covers much of Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It’s also the night of the new moon. All of this energy makes it a perfect time to confront our shadow self, the part of our psyche that makes us uncomfortable and is often repressed or ignored. Simply acknowledging our shadow can often be a challenge.

Find a dark place where you won’t be disturbed, and place a lit candle in a spot between you and a wall. Ideally you want to be in a spot where you cast a giant shadow. In the darkness, stare into your shadow and write down everything you see, positive or negative. Hold nothing back and be honest with yourself. Using your list as a guide, work on integrating both sides of yourself from now until Imbolc.
Wintering In

We’re well into autumn, and winter is just around the corner. It’s the season for wintering in, when country folk would prepare for winter, gathering what they needed to get through the cold months until the storms stopped and the light returned.

Carry out your own wintering in ritual to help you get through the dark months.

You’ll need a favorite mug, your choice of hot beverage, a favorite book, warm mittens, and a white, gray, or dark blue candle in a holder.

Bring everything to a table or to your altar. Light the candle safely and put on the mittens. Repeat:

Warmth and comfort,
Candle bright,
Keep me through
The long dark night
As I await the
Return of light.

Sip your hot beverage. Focus for a minute on the brightness of the candle, the comfort of the mittens, and the soothing warmth of your drink. Envision yourself as a warm cocoon in the midst of winter. Settle in and read your book while enjoying the beverage. Extinguish the candle when you’re done.

Heartwings Love Notes 1059 Feedback

Heartwings says, “What is perceived may alter what is received.”

As a very young child, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I answered, “I want to be married and I want to be famous.” How I knew or even if I knew what these meant is unknown to me now, however it is definitely what I said. I am married, and counting my first time, I have been married for sixty-seven of my nearly 87 years. I am happy to say I have no regrets.

As to the second, being famous, I have to decide what is meant by that. Being recognized in the supermarket as the author of a newspaper column might to some people mean being famous. Having kind things said about that column is equally nice. Being told by a reader that you have been helpful in some way is gratifying to hear. Does it mean I am famous? I don’t know. I can say that these experiences satisfy my initial desire to be famous. In other words, I’m sufficiently famous to suit me.

However, while these are pleasant experiences, something I have learned is not to dwell on feedback from others. My eldest daughter and I had a recent conversation about this. She was saying it was not her habit to base her self value on feedback. I told her I loved that thought and would steal it, because I agree. I have learned that lesson more than once and have the stories to prove it. As far as I can determine, what people see in anyone else most often depends on the personal filters through which they perceive that person. We all have them; the trick is to be aware of them.

Years ago, I learned that if people praised me, it was because of what they liked about me, or what I had done for them or another. If they criticized me, they probably didn’t approve of what I had done or who I seemed to be. Their opinion was what influenced their response. I must admit it’s nicer to be praised than blamed, yet both are in the eye of the beholder. This was a new level in detachment for me. I had learned to be detached from possessions, now it was time to be detached from opinions both good and bad. I appreciated that lesson.

I myself must be the judge of how I am doing. I am the only one who really can tell how I am measuring up to my own standards. Being honest with myself, I can see my value to myself as well as to others. When I honor my efforts, recognize my efforts as worthy, and feel good about them, then I will have been successful, regardless of the result. We cannot all win the blue ribbon, but we can all try. And when we do, then we have succeeded.

May you enjoy success in your own eyes, whatever you try to do.

Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

The Benefits Of Dark Chocolate
~Dr. Weil

I have long recommended eating dark chocolate in my Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid, and with good reason: dark chocolate provides polyphenols with a high antioxidant activity, and of all the chocolates, has fewer unhealthy fats and refined sugars. Recent research is also showing that eating a few pieces of dark chocolate each week (choose 70 percent or higher pure cocoa solids) is a heart-healthy and stress (specifically the hormone cortisol) reducing treat too, as it can:

Fight free radicals. Plant foods rich in flavonoids and antioxidants are beneficial to humans: antioxidants protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals, which have been linked to heart disease and other health concerns. Dark chocolate comes from the cacao plant, which provides these compounds.
Help prevent heart disease. British researchers looked at seven studies that focused on chocolate and cardiac health. Their findings suggest that people who ate more chocolate reduced their risk for heart disease: those who ate dark chocolate weekly had a 37 percent lower risk of any heart disease than those who ate the least amounts.

Decrease the risk of stroke.Swedish researchers found that women who ate high amounts of chocolate – the equivalent of about two bars per week – had a 20 percent lower risk of stroke; British researchers found the number to be closer to 30 percent.

Before you start loading up on candy bars, be aware that more studies are needed to determine what amount and type of chocolate is best. For now, look for a fair trade or organic dark chocolate that provides at least 70 percent cocoa content and enjoy in moderation.

What Spirit Guides Do vs. What They Don’t Do

Before we dive deeper into how we can sense and feel our guide, I believe it is important to understand what guides do versus what they do not do.

What guides do:

Support you in meeting your spiritual and personal development goals
Help you in your readings and mediumship development
Inspire you through spiritual impressions and insights
Work with you in the trance states for philosophy, healing, and evidential mediumship
Occasionally let you know when there is something important to pay attention to
Help you cultivate kindness, compassion, and personal growth
Unconditionally love and support you
What guides do not do:

Give you answers to all your problems
Suggest what you should eat, how to dress, or what to buy
Give you winning lotto numbers
Scare, intimidate, or test you
Trick you or punish you
Dictate how you should live your life
Become angry or annoyed with you

I feel it important for students to learn that our guides do not provide any kind of retribution or judgment for our lives or our actions. This is our story we are playing out, they are there on the sidelines to help us if need be. But from a spiritual perspective, everything we do in this life is about learning. We just get to learn it the hard way or the simpler way. Either way, it is learning. Our guides recognize this and do not have an attachment to the outcome. They just want to support us the best they can.

Through developing your connection to your guide, you are creating a relationship which will be with you the rest of your life. A spirit friend and companion that will always do their best to provide with the guidance that they can and root for you from their side of life. I hope you will meet them with an open heart, without expectation or desire, and a willingness to let them unfold your spiritual gifts and potential. With patience and openness, who knows what is possible.

Exercise: Learning to Sense and Feel Your Guide
As we move into this next exercise, this will be the first time that we are inviting a spiritual presence into our energy. We will allow ourselves to become sensitive (becoming the nerve ending), and then invite the presence of our helper to join us. Do not worry if nothing happens or you do not experience anything. The first several times you do this exercise, there is no expectation that you will notice anything. However, there are best practices that will support you in this exercise.

Be sure that when you come to this exercise, let go of any expectations that it needs to feel, look, or be any specific way. The less expectation that you have going into it, the more neutral you can be, the more likely you will experience something. It is the act of searching or trying that creates tension and thereby inhibits the potential to experience. I often suggest to my students to be okay with getting nothing. The more that we are able to accept nothing happening, the less likely our mind will try to step in and fill in the experience. If we can come to the spirit world with an open mind, open heart, and a willingness to step out of the way, we can often have incredible experiences. The hard part is letting go of a desire for an outcome and the expectation that something specific should happen. Just come to the spirit and say, “I’m going to just sit here and wait. If something happens, great! If nothing happens, great!” If you treat both outcomes with the same level of interest, your awareness will be more receptive. If nothing happens this time, try it again another time.

Beginning by breathing, allow yourself to find a comfortable position that works for you, sitting upright with hands resting in your lap. Begin to become aware of the gentle rhythm of your breathing and as you do this, allow your thoughts to find their natural place of rest. Let go of any expectations, desires, or distractions. If anything does distract you, gently bring your awareness back to the breath.

Notice the inhale and the exhale as you sit in this space. Gently bring your awareness to the central part of your being—that space within you that is the divine spark within you. As you feel into this space, allow it to begin to expand with your intent and let a sense of peace and love fill you as you do. Wait for a sense of expansion from within and allow this energy to expand to fill the body. When it is ready, allow it to expand beyond the body so that you become aware of what’s in front of you and behind you, below you and above you, on your left and on your right.

Take note of what your power and energy feels like that surrounds you now. What sensations do you feel? What does the atmosphere feel like? What does your body feel like? This is you in your own energy; what does it feel like? Allow yourself to passively notice and observe as you become comfortable in this space. Stay passive and neutral, without any expectations of what is to come. Just notice what your energy is like right now.

With your energy expanded and open, send a thought out to your guide that works with you and invite them to begin to step close into your energy so that you might become aware of what they feel like. Ask that they would give you a sensation that lets you know they are there, asking once and then just waiting. Don’t worry if you don’t feel it right away; just stay neutral and wait.

Take note of any slight changes that may have occurred, any sensations that may have changed. With your next breath, send another thought out that your guide might step even closer to you and give you whatever sign or signature they wish to give. Asking once and then observing.

Taking note of what you felt. If you felt nothing, that is okay too. Just stay neutral and passive. One last time, inviting your guide to begin to step even closer, giving you again a sign or sensation that it is them. Asking once and then just waiting.

Taking note of anything you felt or experienced. With your next breath, thanking your guide for being with you, whether you felt something or not, and for this time as they begin to withdraw their energy. As they withdraw, take notice if you feel any change in your energy.

Once you feel that you have returned to your own energy, you can begin to adjust your breathing to take nice full breaths as you begin to return to normal awareness. When you are fully ready to return, you can open your eyes.

Take note of this entire experience. Write things down that you experienced so that you can compare it to the next time you do this exercise.

Cultivating Empathy And Compassion
Andrew Weil, M.D.

Putting others first is a practice commonly recommended to stimulate self-development and spiritual growth. It turns out also to be an effective strategy to enhance emotional wellness. In addition to reducing social isolation, it helps decrease the self-focus that favors depressive rumination and can also lead to greater empathy and compassion.

We’ve been told that goodness is its own reward. In fact doing good for others brings very tangible reward in the form of benefits to physical and mental health. In his 2001 book, The Healing Power of Doing Good, former Peace Corps volunteer and community action lawyer Allan Luks introduced the term “helper’s high” to describe the rush of good feelings that people get when they help others. He proposed that it was an endorphin-mediated state analogous to the well-known “runner’s high.” Since then neuroscientists have demonstrated that helping others activates the same centers in the brain involved in dopamine-mediated pleasure responses to food and sex. In one study, these pleasure centers lit up when participants simply thought about giving money to a charity.

Helpers are less likely to be depressed and more likely to be happy. One of the findings of the landmark Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey of 30,000 Americans, published in 2000, was that those who gave contributions of time or money are 42 percent more likely to be happy than those who don’t give. To cultivate empathy and compassion, try putting others first.

There are many ways to do so, both in thought and action. You could join the Peace Corps or volunteers for relief work in a disaster area, or you can may get similar emotional benefits just by being more aware of the suffering of others and giving some of your time and energy to alleviating it. You can perform acts of altruism, as ordinary as being more courteous when you’re behind the wheel of your car. You can resolve to be kinder in your dealings with others. It all works. Kindness and generosity toward others can actually make you happier.

Empathy is the ability to feel what others feel, to know another person’s experience because you can connect it with your own. Compassion is understanding what others feel and using that understanding to respond to them with love and kindness. We think of empathy and compassion as virtues, but they are also learnable skills that can bring greater happiness into your life and improve all of your relationships. You can sign up today for various forms of empathy training, not just Buddhist meditation classes but very secular business courses designed to make you a better negotiator or manager. In the business world, empathy is held in high regard for the simple reason that people who are most empathetic tend to be most successful.

Learning empathy and compassion contribute to emotional wellness by promoting spiritual growth. These skills allow you to identify with others on a deep level, lessening isolation and loneliness. They offer protection from depression and greater possibilities for experiencing spontaneous happiness.

Visiting Sacred Sites

Visiting a sacred site can be a useful tool to open something within you that has remained inaccessible.

From time immemorial, humans have built sites guided by both the earth’s life force and benevolent beings of light. It is because of this guidance that the sites we deem sacred have long served as repositories of wisdom, energy, and illumination that can be accessed by all. What inspires us to visit sacred sites varies. Some crave spiritual fulfillment above all else, while others hope to draw upon a site’s energy for enlightenment, healing, deep meditation, and even awareness or knowledge of information long gone.

Sacred sites can appear insignificant to those who close themselves off from the notion of a living earth. But sites can provide us with a link to a unified consciousness that involves the living and the dead, infinite cultures, the physical plane, and the spiritual world. When we look beyond well-known sites like Stonehenge, we discover energetically active sites such as the Iron Age Halliggye Fogou caves of Cornwall, England, or the pyramids of Meroe in Sudan.

It is also easy to imagine that hallowed places exist only in remote or exotic locales. Yet many of the most vital sites are easily accessible, and visiting these lesser-known sites can be a profoundly moving experience. One such site, Serpent Mound in Ohio, was thought to be created by the ancient Adena peoples nearly 1,000 years ago to align with the summer and winter solstices. Its precise purpose remains unclear, but many who visit the site conclude that it was meant to be a conduit through which cosmic energy could flow into the earth.

The sacred sites that call to you from afar, capturing your imagination and resonating deep within your soul, will nearly always be those that can help you forge a deeper connection with the divine energy that sustains all life. During your pilgrimage, reaffirm your intention to accept whatever gifts are conveyed to you through the sites you visit. Your receptiveness will help you establish lasting relationships with these sites so that you can draw upon their peace and power from wherever you are.

Coach Gilberto #35
by Stephen Halpert

It was a brisk, sunshiny Fall morning. Gilberto and Rain were just settling in when Lara Parker, accompanied by a bulky, fashionably dressed man breezed into the headmaster’s office at Houndstooth.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors was especially elegant in a dark leather pantsuit and fancy designer boots.
The man with her was a short, heavyset gentleman with thick bushy eyebrows, a long narrow nose, flaring nostrils that prompted a wide handlebar mustache and small squinty blue green eyes. Gilberto sensed they had seen more of life than need be.
He unbuckled his belted tan trench coat revealing a three piece double breasted blue suit, a starched white shirt and a hand tied flashy bow tie. He wore polished black wingtips. Gilberto noticed the outline of a shoulder holster under his left jacket sleeve.
Lara smiled at Gilberto and Rain. “I’d like you to meet Inspector Rene Cliché formerly of the French National Bureau, now a private investigator in Boston. I have commissioned him to solve these murders. I feel it is imperative for Houndstooth to be above reproach. Whoever committed those murders must be brought to justice quickly and efficiently.”
Gilberto stood and shook hands with Inspector Cliché who nodded politely but turned and eyed Rain suspiciously.
“This is Diana Rain,” Lara began. “Our assistant headmaster.”
Cliché nodded curtly. He continued to eye Rain with narrowed eyes. He looked around at everyone and cleared his throat. “The stench of murder most foul must be cleansed from the aura of this fine institution. There are always motives and disagreeable reasons for such heinous acts to occur as they do.”
“Yes,” Rain said. “Most disagreeable indeed.”
He turned to Rain. “You are familiar with those victims madame?”
Rain nodded. “Yes, I hope to be of assistance to you, Inspector, in your investigation.”
Cliché looked down his long nose and sighed. “Thank you madame. I am sure in some incidental way, your cooperation …”
Rain smiled politely and handed him a folder. “Here are the names and backgrounds of those faculty who could be considered suspect.”
Cliché leafed quickly through the folder and frowned. He peered at Gilberto and Rain. “I do not see your names included here. To be absolutely thorough, it is essential for all who participate in the everyday activities of this school to be included. When it comes to murder no stone may be left unturned. It is more times than not the least suspected who eventually appear most suspicious once factual matter is disclosed.”
“No doubt,” Rain said.
Gilberto sensed a slight shift in her mood. He noticed a shadow float across the ceiling and knew the spirit of Cy Willoughby was with them.
Mrs. Conners appeared with a tray containing pastries, cups and saucers and a pot of French roast. She set it on the work table, smiled at Lara Parker and poured the coffee.
“Thank you, Mrs. Connors. I ordered those cream filled pastries especially for the Inspector.” She nodded at him. “He is going to solve the murders for us. Inspector,” she went on, “this is Helen Conners, she’s an old-time member of our Houndstooth family.”
Gilberto and Rain both took a cup. Cliché however refrained. Instead, he continued to leaf through the folder. He looked up and eyed Helen Conners. “But her name is not included in this folder,” Cliché said tersely.
“That’s because she’s not a suspect,” Gilberto said.
Cliché raised his index finger. “Let me be the judge of that. I am sorry Madame but you too must be interrogated. So often close members of an immediate family, even without obvious motives, have been known to stoop to murder. “
He turned and peered at Gilberto. “As I have indicated no stone may be left unturned. I see here the name of Cyrus Willoughby. He too must be questioned.”
“Cy Willoughby is dead,” Rain said flatly. “He also was a victim, though not recently. Nonetheless he is assisting with this murder investigation. Perhaps as an earthbound spirit he may prove useful to your investigation.”
Cliché’s face reddened. “Surely madam that jest is most uncalled for.”
“She is not jesting,” Gilberto said. “He was pushed from the bridge by the meadow and we are seeking to bring his murderer to justice.”
“Unfortunately, he was pushed from behind,” Rain said. “So he was unable to identify his assailant.”
The inspector huffed loudly. “And you expect me to believe this poppycock,” Cliché said. He looked hard at Rain and Gilberto.
Gilberto was growing tired of the man. What a pompous fool, he thought. He shook his head and sighed.
Lara straightened in her chair. “Prior to his sad demise, Mr. Willoughby was a most distinguished member of our faculty,” she said.
Cliché frowned. “You expect me to believe he is participating in some way?”
“Whether you do or not is totally up to you,” Rain said. “I can assure you, however, that his spirit is here with us right now.”
“This is madness,” Cliché’s voice raised. “You cannot expect me to accept anything so preposterous.”
“Be careful,” Rain said. “He’s sensitive when people deny his presence.”
Cliché turned to Lara Parker. “And you too accept this madness?”
Before she could respond, the tray of pastry lifted from the table, floated into the air and stopped just above Inspector Cliché’s head.”
“Perhaps an apology is in order,” Rain said.
Cliché pulled open his trench coat and drew his pistol. He pointed it at Gilberto and Rain.
“Enough of this frivolity. I do not like being made the fool. Obviously …”
Just then the plate of pastry upended and landed on his head, dripping down his face onto his clothes. One of them caught on his mustache and hung there, beginning to decorate his fancy bow tie.
Cliché swore, waved his pistol madly as he dabbed at his face.
Rain moved at blinding speed and removed his pistol from his clutching fingers. “I’m sorry,” she said. “But something about a pistol aimed at me is too disconcerting.”
Cliché glared at her and then stood, depositing pastry around him. Gilberto glanced at Lara who was trying hard not to laugh. He grabbed his handkerchief and swiped it over Cliché’s suit. He heard ghostly chuckles.
“I tried to warn you,” Rain said.
Cliché glared at Lara Parker. He shook himself scattering more pastry around the office then grabbed his pistol. “Solve your own murders,” he said furiously, ” I withdraw from this case.” He flung open the office door and marched out, leaving a trail of drippy cream footsteps.
To be continued.

7 Ways Black Cats Bring Good Luck Around the World
By Louise Hung

Happy Black Cat Day and almost Halloween! Are black cats good luck? In Asia and Europe, black cats bring wealth, bless marriages, keep homes safe and more.

A friend in Hawai’i during dinner a few years ago mentioned that a black cat had crossed his path the previous day while he was en route to some big, math-related test for his big, math-related master’s degree. When he specified that it was a black community cat (the University of Hawai’i has a big community cat population), our group gave up three simultaneous reactions to black cats.

“Aww!” I said, because I’m me. And because I enjoyed the company of the University of Hawai’i community cats more than most students.

“Uh-oh!” my born-and-raised American friend said

“Oh!” said my Japanese friend — with a smile.

Most understood my American friend’s reaction — “Did you feel jinxed for your test?” some people asked — but I preferred my Japanese friend’s response: “But that’s good!”

Unlike much of the western world, Japanese culture sees a black cat crossing your path as a good omen. In fact, black cats are generally seen as good luck in Japan and much of Asia. My Chinese mother, the Feng Shui master, specifically put her black cat’s bed on the north side of her home to ward off evil.

“Tiptoe is a very lucky cat,” she said. “Good luck follows her.”

I think Tiptoe just likes that her bed is nearest the coveted space heater in the winter.

So are black cats good luck? Let’s look at these good black cat luck superstitions around the world:

  1. They bless marriages
English superstition says that giving a bride a black cat on her wedding day will bring her good luck in her marriage. It’s also thought that newlyweds with a black cat in their home will have a long, happy life together, and the black cat will ward off evil spirits. In much of the UK, the black of a cat is a lucky color.

While I don’t necessarily condone giving cats as gifts, newlyweds or spouses-to-be should rejoice in sharing their home with a black kitty.

If you’re a woman still looking for that special someone, Japanese superstition says a black cat will bring a single woman many good suitors.

  1. Black cats draw wealth and prosperity
You might have seen the “Fortune Cats” or Maneki Neko that populate Japanese culture. Those little cat figurines with the raised paws are meant to draw good luck, wealth and prosperity to their owners. Often they are white, but Lucky Cats also come in black.

A black Lucky Cat not only brings luck but also frightens away demons, evil energy, and stalkers. (Yes, stalkers.)

  1. They make safe homes and good harvests
Also, as my Feng Shui-inclined mom says, black cats possesses strong powers of good. If you keep your black cats happy and safe, they will keep you happy and safe. If you don’t have a black cat in real life to guard your home, a black cat figurine facing north will keep bad energy and spirits away.

And while we’re on the subject of gods and demons, in Norse mythology the goddess of love, fertility and beauty, Freya, rides on a chariot pulled by two black cats. To win favor with Freya, farmers would leave bowls of milk for her companions in their fields. Freya would then bless them with a good harvest.

  1. Black cats in the audience help a play
Cats are excellent audience members. Just ask my cat Brandy when I am moved to dance when my playlist cycles through to “Build Me Up Buttercup.” To theater folks in many cultures, there is no better audience member than a black cat. If a black cat finds its way into your audience on opening night, your play will have a long and prosperous run.
  2. Black cats lead to treasure
It’s also been long believed that black cats invite not only fortune in the way of good luck, but also in the way of wealth. French peasants long believed that if a black cat was released at a crossroads where five roads intersect, the black cat would lead them to treasure.
  3. Respecting a black cat brings fortune
And in the south of France, black cats have been called “matagot” and are known as “magician cats” or even “money cats.” If shown the proper respect — like being given the first bite of dinner, having a nice bed to sleep in or having a home even after their owner’s death — the matagot will reward their person with wealth and good luck. (This belief does have some ties to black cats and negative connotations of witchcraft, but I choose to look at it as those who do not treat their cats well get their comeuppance.)
  4. Black cats give sailors safe travels
English sailors could probably have used a matagot in their home to bring them some extra wealth. In ye olde times, black cats were thought to be so lucky and such and assurance that sailors would return safely home from sea that many black cats cost so much as to be unaffordable for seafarers.

Black cat or not, I’m sure most of our feline family members would agree that having the first bite of our dinners is well within their rights.

Georgia Nicols Weekly Horoscope:Sunday,
October 30, 2022

All Signs
Today Mars goes retrograde. It stays retrograde until Jan. 12; then it moves forward to “catch up,” which it does by March 15. (This happens every two years.) Mars represents our energy, our sex drive, and how we go after what we want. While Mars is retrograde, there will be mucho communication meltdowns and verbal pettiness. Your Mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to work with this, not fight it. Be aware you will have feelings of anxiety (based on where it falls in your chart). It’s important to remind yourself. “I’m okay! This is temporary.” Pamper yourself. (A mystery novel, a glass of wine and a warm duvet?) Next year, when Mars goes forward, a lot of aggression will let loose. But enough of this. Time for a little nosh.

Aries (March 21-April 19)
You’ve been running around with an outboard motor on your butt, and you have accomplished a lot! Errands, appointments, short trips and talking to everyone. However, starting today, you might feel like you’re stuck in second gear. (Aries people can drive stick.) You might feel physically bogged down and “held back.” Meanwhile. communications will have a boomerang effect. Instructions and clear requests come back to you as if they were bouncing emails. Naturally, this will be frustrating. However, this is a temporary situation. It lasts until early next year. Therefore, accept what is happening. Lower your expectations. Take a breath and just cruise.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)
You have been doing some serious shopping, and in fact, some of you have been hemorrhaging money because there’s been a tendency lately for you to strongly identify with what you own. In other words, if you have a lot of bright shiny stuff, you feel you are citizen of the year. Now you will head into a situation where your cash flow seems to get bogged down. Things are not moving as quickly as you had hoped. You might also have increased difficulty dealing with possessions – their delivery, their maintenance, whatever. Take a moment to rethink things. Get them in perspective. This is your life. Everything you own is just stuff. What matters is you and your loved ones.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Perhaps more than any other sign, you will feel the effects of Mars retrograde because it’s happening in your sign. Of course, you have had the benefit of Mars in your sign since August 20. This is why you’ve had an enormous drive in the last few months to get things done. It has increased your confidence and your assertiveness. However, starting today, until early January, your physical energy might flag. You might feel tired and overworked. You have so much on your plate, things are falling off the table! Time out. Let’s take a moment to assess your situation. You have to slow down and address what is most important. Shove everything that is not imperative – off to one side. Make life easier for yourself.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
This is a tricky time because Mars is hiding in your chart. It began in August, and it will last until April next year. (Oy vey.) What’s happening is this has a tendency to make you second-guess yourself. It can erode your self-confidence. This week, when it goes retrograde, it can make you feel anxious and apprehensive about your future and everyone else’s future. (Ha! Why limit your worries?) Please note: This is a temporary situation. This is not your state of mind. It’s a temporary dark cloud on your horizon. By the Spring of next year, you’ll be soaring!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)
Lately, you felt a strong interaction with friends; and for many, an interaction with groups and organizations. These interactions have been positive and successful because others are willing to listen to you. (Fortunately, you have something to say.) However, from now until the end of the year, you might feel that your communications are going out into the ether. They’re not connecting with anyone. Or maybe you feel no one is listening? This is disconcerting for a Leo. When you speak, you like to be heard. You might feel that working with others and expecting their cooperation is like herding cats. Don’t be disappointed. It’s just what’s happening. Treat yourself to something – you deserve it.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Since late summer, you’ve been on a roll! Because your ambition was aroused, you were determined to go after what you wanted. You have been assertive when dealing with bosses, parents, VIPs and the police. You stated your case and defended your wants and requests. However, starting today, it’s as if your voice is muffled. Your influence with those in power will be weaker. They won’t even hear you! Naturally, this can freak you out a bit. Don’t take this seriously. Think of it as a “time out.” Until next year, you will have to bide your time and make quiet, private plans about what you intend to do. In the meantime, pull in your reins and relax. Whether you’re coach or first class, the wheels hit the tarmac at the same time.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Lately, you have had exciting ideas related to publishing, the media, legal matters, medical issues as well higher education and learning. And let us not forget travel! “I’m going places!” Suddenly, the light is dimming on many of these projects. Travel plans might be cancelled or delayed. Medical and legal matters might get stalled. Issues with the media and publishing might be blocked. Don’t get your belly in a rash. Hey, this is the best time for you to improve your job or get a better job in over a decade! (You have this in your hip pocket.) You can also improve your health! Change is afoot, and you’ve got this.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
Mars will be retrograde in one of your Money Houses, which means money from other sources might be delayed. Possibly, agreements with someone about mortgages, loans, insurance matters, inheritances and shared property might get bogged down or stalled in the water. This could lead to arguments about how to handle jointly-held resources with partners and spouses. You might feel that something is being withheld from you. (You might be right!) Likewise, personal intimacy might create feelings of doubt. (And then there was total darkness.) Remember that this is temporary. It’s a long, slow hiccup of a couple of months. Once it’s over, you’ll be keen to travel and explore new horizons.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
It’s been a bit challenging for you since the summer because fiery Mars has been sitting opposite your sign. Today it will go retrograde until early January. You might find yourself nitpicking and quarreling about old topics and past history. You might also find it challenging to join forces or to work in partnership with someone. You might distrust giving up some control? Make sure that whatever conflict you enter into is worth it. It’s an old saying, but it’s true: choose your battles. Remember, we don’t live forever! It might come down to this: you can be right or you can be in the relationship. Meanwhile, you can make great improvements at home right now; and possibly profit from real-estate opportunities. (Or are these the areas that trigger disputes?) Go figure.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You’ve been gung-ho to work lately, which is why you have been productive and successful in your job. It’s been easy to give it everything you’ve got, partly because you have identified strongly with your work. You’ve been proud of your accomplishments. Fear not — you will continue to work hard and be proud of what you achieve; however, you will encounter more obstacles. And you might feel less driven, less focused and less willing to work so hard. Don’t worry about this. You don’t have to be Hercules. Lighten up for the next few months. Be kind to yourself. Lower your expectations, and simply do the best you can. That’s all any of us can do. No biggie.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
You have been pumped with energy because since August, Mars has helped you. In particular, it has boosted your energy in sports, and in matters related to dealing with children, working in the entertainment world, as well as your involvement in the hospitality industry. It has pumped your desire to have fun and play! Today these very same areas might suddenly slow down. You don’t have the time. You have less interest. You might even encounter obstacles or difficulties in your social life, especially with vacation plans. Accept what’s happening and be patient. Take it easy for the rest of year. In April next year, you’re ready to fly! (Probably literally.)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
You have experienced increased chaos and increased activity at home in the last few months. Fortunately, you have the energy to create order out of this chaos – relatively speaking. (Rome wasn’t built in a day; in fact, I hear they’re still working on it.) Starting today however, as Mars goes retrograde, you might feel bogged down by certain issues at home or within your family. These could create an impasse or conflict with someone. Or you might simply have less energy and enthusiasm to deal with whatever arises. Bottom line: Cut yourself some slack. Someday you’ll look back on this and plow into a parked car.

Weekly Horoscopes beginning Sunday, 30 October 2022

If you’re born within a cusp period (16 to 26 of any month); you’re advised to read horoscopes of both signs covered by that period. You’re on the border; you may have influences from houses within those signs.

Outlines are longer versions; consist of every possible detail of everyday and are based on three parts of each sign: 1st, 2nd & 3rd Decan; that is, any of three divisions of 10° within a sign of the zodiac. Even if you know or don’t know your Decan; I recommend, please read all three Decan.

Personal theme: I am!!
Fire & cardinal sign: March 21 — April 19

Your horoscope for this week:

Usually, when you encounter obstacles, you’ll battle to overcome them; but with your ruler Mars retrograde, that is moving backwards in the heavens, life’s as much about reviewing the past as it is about forging ahead into the future. The secret? Learn to regard setbacks as the opportunity to learn that they are. Each day and each experience will offer astonishing and, often, unexpected insights.

A disagreement is getting out of hand. You can almost see the molehill turn into a mountain as you witness petty argument progress. Arguing is a waste of time and energy. Encourage others to keep things in perspective and refrain from making jokes about the situation. Whereas the workplace is full of friction, family life will be a pleasant opposite. Domestic projects make progress through a unanimous agreement to introduce something new and worthwhile into the family environment.

Mars, your ruling planet has turned retrograde and in an area of the zodiac linked to communication. Anticipate -especially since we are between two eclipses, – that there will be misunderstandings and argumentativeness in the air. It’s between eclipses that habits can be broken. That’s not always comfortable. Many people (your sign included) will feel like fish swimming in new seas and need time to adapt to new currents. It will surely take extra ordinary acts of compassion to understand and allow for readjustment. With some apparently determined to move ahead in directions which you are at a loss to understand, arguments will break out. Yet these same individuals might yet reverse. The art is surely not to overreact. Priority must be given to ensuring that actions don’t turn into costly financial errors. It may be that this week that your Aries bravery manifests in showing patience and curbing your tendency to fight.

Personal theme: I have!!
Earth & fixed sign: April 20 — May 20

Your horoscope for this week:

Usually planning ahead isn’t just wise, having things organised frees you to enjoy life’s exciting twists and turns. Still, worthwhile as events are, what you encounter may not seem promising, at least initially. Despite that, make a point of exploring them and, equally, chatting with the people involved. While the resulting changes are likely to be unsettling, you’ll soon recognise them as the breakthroughs they are.

Work, health, diet and friendships all have the potential to lift your spirits, providing you respect and taking care of yourself. Establish healthy boundaries. High levels of intuition help you sense what is going on that you aren’t being told about. Digging deep and getting answers is the way to advance your career. Joining a discussion group or book club will be a great way to make new friends. You will get to meet people who appreciate your skills and interests.

In just over a week’s time, there will be a Lunar Eclipse in your sign. You’ve lived through this before: in 2014 for example. Yet the cosmos never does exact repeats. What’s interesting about the present is that Mars is now retrograde in neighbouring Gemini. For all signs, refreshing and repairing lines of communication takes priority. For Taurus, there might also be acceptance that a relationship has come as far as it can without being given major makeover. Only your personal chart will determine whether or not that exercise would be worthwhile. Fact is that since Uranus entered your sign a few years ago, disruption, discontinuity and upheaval have been inevitable. Of course, this could be exciting and put you on new career route altogether. You will however, require support and surely benefit from arranging a quiet meeting with a mentor or adviser for next weekend. Doing this ahead of the Lunar Eclipse would offer rehearsal and opportunity to prepare strategies.

Personal theme: I think!!
Air sign: May 21 — June 20

Your horoscope for this week:

As a quick-thinking Gemini, you’re brilliant at disentangling yourself from even very tricky situations. While those you’re facing now and over the coming weeks may result in frustrating delays, they’ll be amazingly informative. So much that, when looking back on them, you’ll be thankful they took place. Knowing that now, you’re urged to exchange your usual impatience for a more inquisitive approach to these setbacks.

Someone will help you out because you have done them a favour in the past. They would have done it anyway. So, if you need advice or assistance, all you have to do is ask. You appreciate the value of joining forces with a talented friend or workmate. Results achieved from your combined effort will be remarkable. There’s some confusion about family plans you had thought were finalised. Now someone is changing their mind, and new arrangements need to be made.

Mars has now turned retrograde in your sign. So now stop and think: the events of recent weeks have no doubt been bewildering, exciting, whirlwind and disorientating. With Jupiter having returned to the apex of your solar chart, you are likely rethinking career options and exactly where you want to expend energy. It may be that trial periods are needed. Mars won’t leave your sign until March of next year and for the next few months, a temporary mood prevails. If you have the Gemini gift for writing, this would be an excellent time to flex that talent. You should also find that – still within this curious period between eclipses through to November 8, – that priority should be given to fact-gathering. It might even be that you become involved in legal argument and need to access archives which hopefully, have been well maintained. This exercise will surely reinforce the value of good notetaking.

Personal theme: I feel!!
Water & cardinal sign: June 21 — July 22

Your horoscope for this week:

You may already sense you’re in a remarkable period, one during which you’ll find yourself appreciating life’s joys, including the activities and people you usually take for granted. This is good timing, because unsettling yet overdue changes are now inevitable. Instead of worrying on your own, discuss your concerns with others, first with those whose wisdom you trust, then with those involved. You’ll be glad you did.

You’re finding it difficult to focus your mind, and if you’re making a start on anything, it’s unlikely to make a lot of progress. Wait until another time to get lengthy projects underway. Mental strain combined with a lack of energy is a sign that you need to rest and recharge your batteries. Pay attention to what people are saying, as someone could let some confidential information slip without realising it. Be sure you don’t let them know you have noticed.

We are in that curious period between eclipses when habits – even for Cancerians, – can be broken. With Jupiter having turned retrograde back into another of the Water signs, Pisces, a strong possibility is reviewing your qualifications and determining how these might be improved. This weekend, Mars turned retrograde in Gemini, a sign noted for acquiring information. It would be understandable if you chose to actively improve your knowledge base: a desire that may be energised and supported either by a Capricorn or someone who holds authority. They may be regretting not having actively pursued better career path themselves. All this will surely propel you into a new network entirely. There are clear signals that from next weekend you’ll be working with a group who have a single aim in mind. Yes, this could have a political edge but may be a vital step on your career ladder.

Personal theme: I will!!
Fire & fixed sign: July 23 — August 22

Your horoscope for this week:

Recently you’ve faced several obstacles, some ongoing, but many both new and puzzling. You’ve ‘quick fixes’ for the former, but no idea how to proceed with the latter. Instead of plunging in, as you’d usually do, chat with others. You’ll discover some are facing similar issues and, equally, be eager to learn from them, while seeking solutions. Better yet, this turns challenges into a joyous journey of discovery.

Don’t expect too much too quickly. It will be interesting to see other people’s reactions to plans you are making. Someone you expected to turn up to an important meeting will be conspicuous by their absence. There is an odd atmosphere in the workplace. A large investment project will breathe new life into your community, and a group effort will encourage a feeling of well-being and optimism. Buying or selling some property could bring a stronger sense of security.

Mars turned retrograde in Gemini (communications) this weekend and is retrograde for the remainder of the year. Meanwhile, Mercury, planet of communications moved into Scorpio. Over the next few weeks truths will emerge. Those who’ve been digging deep should find what they’ve been looking for. The mess created in the process could be considerable. One of the side-effects will surely be revaluation of prices. Anticipate turbulence especially in the days leading up to next week’s Lunar Eclipse. Many Leos are reviewing property and assets differently. Fresh determination to realise dreams should be apparent. Don’t be surprise if, in the process, you’re drawn into massive argument and witness the breakup – or threatened break-up – of a long-standing commercial arrangement.

Personal theme: I analyse!!
Earth sign: August 23 — September 22

Your horoscope for this week:

Ideally, you’ll analyse existing plans and new ideas in detail before you take action. However, the current swift pace is forcing you to plunge in, and let experience be your guide. Being a practical Virgo, you rethink problems the moment you catch them. Still, in certain situations you’ve no choice but to act swiftly. The secret? Ensure any plans are flexible enough to withstand several changes.

A friend or workmate can’t seem to sit still for more than one minute. Their lack of interest in jobs they should be working on will annoy you when you can think of plenty, they could be getting on with that would keep them out of mischief. Hold your tongue with people who are being awkward, especially when it comes to work and finances. Money matters do need attention, and it may be up to you to work out a new budget.

Mars turns retrograde at the apex of your solar chart. This marks the start of several weeks when review is essential. Obviously, this affects all signs, but in your case, may be driven by the need to dig deeper for facts -particularly where financial matters are concerned. Reviewing a commercial partnership is probable. This might not require bringing it to a conclusion, but rather of redefining it and determining motivation. Recall that we are between eclipses and that until after the Full Moon on November 8, it could feel as though you’re in a constant traffic jam. Moving forward likely won’t be easy, and with others in fractious mood, smooth-running may not be possible. A strong possibility is that you’ll reconsider investment and whether or not your energies could be better spent elsewhere.

Personal theme: I balance!!
Air & cardinal sign: September 23 — October 22

Your horoscope for this week:

For ages you’ve been aware you’d have to deal with certain vital but tedious practical or financial matters. Or, equally, it may be you’re finding a way to balance others’ ideas, needs and demands with yours. While, individually, these aren’t overwhelming, it’s a lot to deal with at once. The secret? Do the minimum. Certain matters seem urgent; but not only can they wait, some could resolve themselves.

You can’t help feeling a neighbour is over-reacting when they see or hear something that provokes some strong emotions. Hours of talking will not get anyone anywhere. You would do your best to keep well out of it. If you’ve been single for a while and are on the lookout for a new partner, don’t doubt your luck too quickly. Very soon, you could meet someone who you will get on really well with, or a platonic relationship will turn romantic.

You may remember that Mars is moving through another of the Air signs. This weekend it turns retrograde and will be in that condition through until the end of the year. This should not be viewed as a negative. Gemini marks the ‘publications and legal matters’ area of your solar chart. Rethinks are likely. That does not mean that you can’t either win a case or shouldn’t launch a new project. What it suggests is that you need to rethink an argument or knowledge base. There may be financial considerations that are now much bigger than you originally imagined. By next Saturday, you may have affected a U-turn and need reassurance (probably from someone from a different culture) that they will keep their word.

Scorpio & Ophiuchus
Personal theme: I desire!!
Water & fixed signs: October 23 — November 21

Your horoscope for this week:

Between the recent Scorpio New Moon, which accents breakthroughs, and the Sun, Venus and the ideas planet Mercury being positioned in Scorpio, change is inevitable. Obviously, you’d rather think things through; but the swift pace demands you plunge in, learn from experience, then rethink plans. Be bold. What you do, who you meet and what you experience will enrich your life now, and in the future.

It will be a partner or friend’s negative expectations that could hold you back if you allow this. When people express their doubts, you might find yourself wondering whether you are doing the right thing. Trust your own instincts and no one else’s. Time spent in gossip will be wasted when a friend or neighbour has a lot to say about someone, and none of this will be beneficial. Double check everything asked of you in the workplace.

This weekend, Mars, your ruling planet, turned retrograde in Gemini and others people’s plans could stall. As Mercury is now moved into your sign, anticipate that more than one person will seek your advice. Fact is that they’ve likely got themselves into a real mess. You could argue and go back over old ground – and that is perhaps essential before you can move forward. However, strategy is key. Whilst it may be necessary to point out where errors of been made, you perhaps also need to do what you’re also so good at: instinctively knowing the better path to take now. Your voice at meetings could make all the difference. True, you might still need to give people a few days to assimilate your advice. It’s probable though that soon after next week’s important Lunar Eclipse, that you will be in the driving seat and confidently taking decisions which, just a few weeks ago, would have seemed unthinkable.

Personal theme: I see!!
Fire sign: November 22 — December 21

Your horoscope for this week:

Currently, events are about yielding to rules, regulations or others’ ideas of what’s wise or right. Unlikely as it seems, these are broadening your horizons, often in completely unexpected ways. While, obviously, you’d like decisions made, this period is about decluttering your life, and mind. The habits you change now will free you to take advantage of thrilling developments, and in only a few weeks’ time.

You’re busy with projects of all kinds, but this does not mean you haven’t any time for your friends and loved ones. Better still, if they share your interests, you could spend a lot of time together, and this will prove profitable and productive. You will be getting on surprisingly well with a new colleague who is much younger than yourself, and you will be impressed by their knowledge. Conversations will get very interesting.

Remember firstly that we are between eclipses: a curious period when the Earth’s magnetic field is altered and when behaviour alters. Secondly, recall that Jupiter, your ruling planet, has returned to the base of your solar chart. This is time to rethink your life journey, and any mission you wish to accomplish. You may not have alerted others to those aims. Now, with Mars retrograde in your opposite sign, it might seem that others have all the attention when you need some! Yet this may be the moment to revisit those long-term goals and consider just how realistic they are. In recent times, health issues – both your own and of those close to you – may have slowed things up. An altered strategy may be necessary. By next week’s Lunar Eclipse, you perhaps need to make clear that even if you haven’t finalised your plans, you are giving them close consideration.

Personal theme: I use!!
Earth & cardinal sign: December 22 — January 19

Your horoscope for this week:

Admirable as your independent streak is, between now and mid-November, you’re urged to go with the flow. That may seem weak. However, you’ll swiftly realise that, unwelcome as certain situations are, what you’re learning and, equally, the people you’re meeting are broadening your horizons, often in ways as unexpected as they are informative. Decisions? They can, and should, wait until late November.

Success will come through the practical way you always approach your responsibilities. If you get a strong feeling that you should try a new direction, don’t hesitate to say so. You aren’t likely to make progress if you hide your thoughts and feelings. People admire your ability to be able to do a lot with a little, so whether it is money or time that needs to be stretched later in the week, few will be able to do this as cleverly as you.

Mars has turned retrograde in an area of your solar chart that is all about day-to-day activities. It could be that these are compromised by either communication or transport issues. A further possibility is that a project will come unstuck. Recall though, that we are between eclipses and that this is a curious time when people alter their aims. Revision is not always a bad thing. Checking, rechecking and triple checking the wording of documents is essential. A strong possibility is that publications which have your name on them, will require review. A further and strong possibility is that in line with a group of people, you determine that more information is required and that you need to embark on a short course to be completed by your birthday if possible.

Personal theme: I know!!
Air & fixed sign: January 20 — February 18

Your horoscope for this week:

As a quick-thinking Aquarius, you’ve a talent for turning even unsettling changes to your advantage. Yet the changes triggered by eclipses, on 25 October and on 8 November, are about breakthroughs, most so far-reaching you won’t necessarily recognise their promise. The secret? Forget about planning and simply take each day as it comes. Gradually you’ll realise you’re enjoying life more and worrying a lot less.

Don’t panic if you are faced with having to handle another colleague’s responsibilities. Stay calm, and once your nerves subside, you will realise all that’s needed is a systematic approach. Take a common-sense view to commitments, and success is almost guaranteed. Someone who is known to be a gossip will tell you something they insist is true, but as you expected, it will turn out to be nothing more than their personal opinion.

Mars has now turned retrograde: something that doesn’t happens every year. It has also turned retrograde in another of the Air signs, Gemini. This represents the play area of your solar chart. Since Mars will be retrograde for some months, this would be the optimum time for improving skills in an area that been research and development – perhaps a hobby, – with a view to developing a second revenue stream in 2023. Recall too, that we are between eclipses. Habits can be broken but yes, you have to remember that that’s true for all signs. Be prepared for the unexpected. Announcements made before Friday seem likely to shake your career foundations. They might also prompt you to think more carefully about how you live and work: including a possible move.

Personal theme: I believe!!
Water sign: February 19 — March 20

Your horoscope for this week:

You’ve a powerful ability to spot the promise in changes, including the rather dramatic events reshaping your life and others’ circumstance. However, not everybody is as tuned into the potential changes hold. Reassure them if you must, but avoid getting involved. You’ve other things to focus on, and these dramas really are others’ to deal with. Let them. You’ve numerous plans and projects awaiting your attention.

A relative will stir your interest and curiosity after revealing they are planning to relocate. As well as earning your admiration for taking such a bold step you might feel drawn towards making a few changes in your own life. All of a sudden, you will want to go with changes that are occurring around you rather than cling to what has become too routine and overly familiar. Your enthusiasm for new ideas will be rewarded. Be sure to swim with the tide and not against it.

As of Sunday, Mars is retrograde at the base of your solar chart for some months. Mars is the energizer: the hot planet. Over the next few weeks you could feel as though you’re dancing on hot coals. Being uncomfortable and on edge is probable; but note too, that we are between two eclipses. This is when people alter their behaviour and change happens. It takes time to adjust. What may be unsettling are changes in your local environment: including personnel at work. Though it’s said that Pisces are highly adaptable and can cope with anything, it’s perhaps also true that when usual rhythms are disturbed you feel fragile and threatened. By Friday you might agree that you need to work with a different team and gather support – most likely from Taurus and Scorpio friends – who in different ways, anchor and bring solace.
