Today’s Goddess: Cherokee First Woman
Reunion with the Goddess (Southeastern United States)
Themes: Spirituality; Universal Truth; Unity; Cleansing; Abundance
Symbols: All Animals and Plants
About Cherokee First Woman: This Goddess appears in Cherokee myths as an ancestress to the tribe and creatrix of all animals and plants. After the world was first inhabited, a year (this child may have symbolized the new year). Additionally, she motivates the earth’s bounty and generates abundance to sustain us through the months ahead.
To Do Today: Around this time of year, Cherokee tribes often hold a festival of offerings meant to celebrate their unity with the Sacred Parent and reunite them with this power. One custom easy to follow is that of exchanging clothes with a loved one; this symbolizes oneness among humans, the gods, and each other.
Washing in running water today (shower or tap) will cleanse away any barrier that stands between you and the Goddess. If you hold a formal ritual today, place a bowl of water near the circle where each participant can rinse their hands to invoke Cherokee First Woman’s blessing and purification.
Finally, drink a tall glass of spring water today to release this Goddess’s spiritual nature, rejuvenation, and abundance into every cell.

Pagan Studies ~ It’s October!
Durga Festival Begins – A great slayer of evil, Durga could help cut negativity from your life. Ask Her assistance today.
October, the tenth month of the current Gregorian calendar and the second month of Autumn’s rule, derives its name from octo, the Latin word meaning “eight,” as October was the eighth month of the old Roman calendar.
The traditional birthstone amulets of October are opal, rose sapphire, and tourmaline; and the calendula is the month’s traditional flower.
October is shared by the astrological signs of Libra the Scales (or Balance) and Scorpio the Scorpion, and is sacred to the following Pagan deities: Cernunnos, Hecate, the Morrigan, Osiris, and the Wiccan Goddess in Her dark aspect as the Crone.
During the month of October, the Great Solar Wheel of the Year is turned to Halloween (Samhain Eve), one of the four Grand Sabbats celebrated each year by Wiccans and modern Witches throughout the world.
In some Saxon calendars, allegorized by the figure of a husbandman carrying a sack on his shoulders, sowing corn.
In other old calendars, the sport of hawking is represented.
The month for making beer, wine, cider, because of steady temperature.
Sacred to Goddess Astraea, daughter of Zeus and Themis. She lived among humans in the Golden Age but when civilization deteriorated she withdrew to the upperworld.
This is the Irish month of Deireadh Fomhair. The Frankish name, Windurmanoth, means ‘vintage month’. American backwoods: Hunter’s Moon. Asatru name: Hunting.
Weather lore of October (Northern Hemisphere): the more bright red berries (haws and hips) that can be seen in the hedgerows, the more frost and snow there will be the next Winter.
The second ‘Summer’ in October is called Indian Summer in America, St Bridget’s Summer in Sweden; in Italy, the Summer
of St Teresa; in Germany and Switzerland, the Summer of St Gall. In England, it is called St Luke’s Summer.
Much rain in October said to correspond with much rain in December. A warm October makes a cold February.
If October bring much frost and wind,
Then are January and February mild.
~Traditional English weather proverb
In October dung your field,
And your land its wealth shall yield.
~Traditional English proverb
Birth flowers: Calendula and cosmos.
Birthstone: Opal, signifying hope. Said to bring bad luck to those not born in this month who wear it.
An Old English Tradition
Beadles and Servants of the guild of salters attended a service at St Magnus church, London-bridge. Sir John Salter had been a good benefactor to their company, and he ordered in his will that the beadles and servants should go three times each in the first week of October and say to each other, “How do you do brother salter? I hope you are well!”
October’s child is born for woe,
And life’s vicissitudes must know
But lay an Opal on her breast,
And hope will lull those woes to rest.
~Traditional English Proverb

Tasha’s Astro Planner for October 2014
Look to the stars to see what light can be brought to your every day life.
Astrologically, this is a relatively vigorous month, with things to do and participate in. Retrograde Mercury and the two eclipses especially represent opportunities to use the energy represented by these astrological events. I feel that I do best when I can make use of all that is given me to learn and grow as well as to contribute my energy to the world as a whole. There are times to be active and times to go within. Astrology can help us to determine these as well.
Most of October falls during a retrograde Mercury, beginning on the 4th and stretching to the 25th. There are good ways to use this period of seemingly backward movement of the planet of communications and the intellect, and as well there are things best avoided. My rule of thumb is that if an activity begins with “re” you will benefit by pursuing it. For instance if you are thinking of buying something, this is an excellent time to do research. Once Mercury turns direct, you will be ready to purchase whatever it is you have explored.
There are two eclipses this month as well. The Lunar Full Moon eclipse is on the 8th, the Solar New Moon eclipse is on the 23rd. Both take place during retrograde Mercury, influencing the effects desired from the energy at this time. Look to the past for what needs to be eliminated during the Lunar Eclipse of the Full Moon. What can you lose? What can you put to rest from the past? With the Solar New Moon Eclipse, think of failed attempts in the past and try again. These two eclipses bring opportunities to redo past errors or make up for false starts.
From its beginning in Scorpio, Mercury moves back into Libra for two thirds of the month, bringing more opportunities to pursue balance in thinking and communication. Venus changes signs, spending the first three quarters of the month in indecisive Libra and the last quarter in passionate Scorpio. The Sun moves into Scorpio on the 23rd, and together with Venus in its first few days makes for an atmosphere of strong desire. Mars joins Pluto in Capricorn toward the end of the month on the 25th, indicating that the potential for rebirth, renewal and restructure will be high.
What is important to remember is that regardless of the potential represented by any planet and its activity, the energy represented is ours to make the best of. There is no giant named Mars or Pluto out there stomping around, no siren named Venus in Scorpio, there are only the human beings who determine how energy will be used or misused and what may be built of destroyed in the process. Days to be mindful include the 4th, the 7th, the 8th and the 11th. Days to be energetic include the 5th, the 8th, the 16th, and the 17th.

Health and Healing Arts ~ Sleep Is A Ceremony
Trouble Sleeping? Sleep is actually a Ceremony, a remarkable essential Ceremony in which we participate over and over again, for our entire lives, along with virtually all other Sentient Beings with whom we share this planet Earth, all other members of the Sacred Circle of Life, as the Lakota Native Americans would say. As a matter of fact, the Universe itself participates in this Ceremony of restful “letting go”, gently creating the appropriate backdrop for our Sleep by turning down the earth’s lights and turning on the Heaven’s Nightlights, quieting the daily noises and most of the earth’s creatures, and often seeming to still even the very air and waters around us.
Many indigenous peoples still believe that the Dream World to which we travel when we sleep and regenerate ourselves, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, may well be a truer “reality” than the everyday world in which we generally function. Be that as it may, the fact is, in our busy, stressful society, many of us struggle, occasionally or chronically, with Insomnia, meaning sleep difficulties such as the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep or maintaining such a light, restless sleep that we do not feel refreshed and rejuvenated upon awaking.
Sleeping problems may occur for many reasons, including, according to Jethro Koss, in his book, Back To Eden “overeating, indigestion, eating late at night before retiring, stress, tension, worry, fear of something that might happen….cold feet, poor circulation, nervousness, and poor ventilation in the bedroom.” For some, specific conditions such as menopause, pregnancy, arthritis, or twitchy legs cause the problem. For most non-sleepers though, it seems as though as we get into bed, the nervous system deliberately goes into overdrive, and we cannot release the concerns of the day enough to quiet the mind/body and make ourselves open and receptive to sleep.
Whether it is fear of entering the relaxed dream state or of fear of giving up control over our daily concerns, sleep eludes us and we remain overly alert and awake.

The Goddess Companion
In the rosy sky the Goddess appears,
like the sun at noon, the moon at midnight.
As beautiful as heavens, she appears
to answer our prayers through our dreams.
Holy Inanna observes our actions
and gives good luck to the generous
and bad luck to the selfish.
Hovering like a star, she shine on us.
~Babylonian Prayers To The Goddess
The Celestial Goddess appears in many cultures. Like Inanna in the prayers above, she is seen as a Sky Goddess who smiles down upon us, who sees our every move, who is present with us at all times. Sometimes she is described as the Sister of the Earth Goddess, sometimes as the mate of an Earth-God. The sun and moon are often said to be her eyes, and the stars are the jewels that twinkle in her dark flowing hair.
Many times we hear the Goddess described as associated only with the earth; the implicit or explicit assumption is that the sky is the domain of the Father-God. Yet this is not true in all areas or eras of the world. Just as frequently, the sky is described as an overreaching Goddess who sustains us with her nourishing rain, who mothers us by providing the air we breathe. Welcoming the Sky Goddess into our lives can remind us of how enveloped we are by the planet that mothers us.

A Hug
Hugging is good medicine. It transfers energy,
and gives the person hugged an emotional boost.
You need four hugs a day for survival, eight for maintenance, and twelve for growth.
A hug makes you feel good.
The skin is the largest organ we have and it needs a great deal of care.
A hug can cover a lot of skin and gives the message that you care.
It is also a form of communication.
It can say things you don’t have words for.
The nicest thing about a hug is that you usually can’t give one without getting one.
Every Day is Earth Day! Love Your Mother!
“We all come from the Goddess
And to Her we shall return
Like a drop of rain, going to the ocean”
“May the circle be open, but unbroken,
May the love of the Goddess be ever in your heart.
Merry Meet and Merry Part
And Merry Meet Again!”
