LAMMAS EVE
Once upon a Lammas Night
When corn rigs are bonny,
Beneath the Moon’s unclouded light,
I held awhile to Annie…

The moon rising solemnly over the crest
Of the hills to the east of my station
Displayed her broad disk to the darkening west
Like a visible new creation.
– Ambrose Bierce, “The Devil’s Dictionary.”

In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

FULL MOON is when whatever we seeded at new moon is likely to come to fruition. So this is a time of harvesting what we have sewn through our thoughts
& actions over the past two weeks.

Balancing Leo / Aquarius

With the Sun in Leo & the Moon waxing to full in Aquarius we are all learning to balance the lessons of the Leo / Aquarius polarity, regardless of our personal sun sign.

Both of these signs are fixed signs, the middle sign of their element. In the positive, they gift us the ability to sustain our efforts & persevere, demonstrating the qualities of commitment & loyalty. (This is a blessing given Venus is now retrograde testing our love relationships.) However, when these energies are out of balance within us, we can embody more of their shadow traits & become stubborn, inflexible & resist change. Those who polarize in the energy of Leo can make it all about them & those who polarize in the energy of Aquarius may only co-operate if everything is on their terms.

Once in a Blue Moon!

This full moon is a blue moon, meaning it’s the second full moon in a calendar month.
So the saying, ‘once in a blue moon’ refers to the rarity of this event…less than one blue moon a year…rather than it having any real auspicious meaning astrologically.

The Lesson of Aquarius

Many people mistake Aquarius for a water sign since it’s the sign of the water or energy bearer. Aquarius is an air sign that asks us to consider new ideas that will enable us to ‘go with the flow’ of energy rather than against it.

Those who are weather shamans will have noticed the winds pick up in velocity as the moon waxed to full in this sign. The winds carry new thought forms around the globe & shake up outmoded thinking – so if you’ve been feeling a little too staid for your liking, go out & walk in the wind to clear away the cobwebs. ~Tanishka

Seasons of the Witch – Legends and Lore, Ancient Holidays
And Some Not So Ancient!

Today Is …

August Eve. Celtic days begin at Sunset.

Greek: The last day of every month is dedicated to the Goddess Hecate. Offerings were made to her in the cross-roads (typically at a place where a side path joins a main road), which seem to be haunted the world over. ‘Hecate’s Suppers’ were put out monthly for her

Asatru: Blot or feastday honoring Loki and his wife, Sigyn. Loki is best known as “the trickster.” He the lord of mischief. Although he is considered part of the Aesir gods, he is actually descended from the Jotuns, and often worked against the gods. Loki is a shapeshifter, and through his unlikely coupling with a horse, he fathered the 8-legged horse, Sleipnir. Loki is a fire god.

Birthday of Madame Helen Blavatsky – An interesting foremother. On this date in the year 1831, famous mystic and spiritualist medium Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was born in the Ukraine.

August Eve, Lammas Eve, The Eve of Lughnasadh.

In pre-Christian times, the Oidhche Lugnasa was celebrated by the Celts on this night in honor of their solar deity named Lugh. His annual sacrifice at the end of the harvest ensured the fertility of the corn and grain for the next growing season.

An old August Eve tradition in rural Scotland is predicting the following year’s marriages and deaths by throwing sickles into the air and then drawing omens from the position in which they fall.

July 16~On this day, thousands of Haitians begin an annual pilgrimage to the Saut d’ Eau waterfall, which is scared to Erzulie Freda (the Voodoo loa of love and beauty) and is believed to possess miraculous healing powers

St. Neot’s Fair – St Neot was a monk of Glastonbury who became a hermit in what is now called St Neot in Cornwall. Supposedly he was a valued advisor of St Alfred. One legend about him says he harnessed stags to his plough. This story may derive from stories told about the mythical Irish King, Nuada Silver-Arm.

Today’s Goddess: The Narucnici
Helena Blavatsky’s Birthday (Ukraine)

Themes: Psychic Abilities; Spirituality; Destiny; Divination
Symbols: An Eye; All Symbols of Fate or Destiny

About the Narucnici: In Slavic regions these are goddesses of fate who see each child’s destiny at birth. At times they can be propitiated through prayers to alter one’s destiny, especially when it’s running headlong into disaster.

To Do Today: In 1831, the acclaimed mystic Helena Blavatsky was born under the watchful eye of the Narucnici, who must have predicted an impressive life for her. Helena grew up to establish the Theosophical Society, whose goal is to explore mystical phenomena, to better understand it, and to expose fraudulent dealings. To remember this remarkable woman and honor the Narucnici, focus on your own inherent magickal potential.

All of us have the Goddess’s prophetic ability within; it’s just a matter of activating that talent. One exercise that seems to help people is meditating on opening the chakra located in the middle of your forehead (the third eye). Close your physical eyes and visualize a purple-silver light pouring into your forehead from above. See it swirling clockwise, forming the image of an eye. Allow this eye to open, very slowly. Do you feel different as it opens? Can you sense things on the edge of your awareness you couldn’t before? After the exercise, try your favorite divinatory tool and examine what new insights it offers now that you’ve cleared the path for that foresight a bit.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies – Taltiu, Foster Mother of Lugh

About the Calends of August, Taltiu died, on a Monday, on the feast of Lughnasad of Lug; around her grave from that Monday
forth is held the chief fair of noble Erin. ~The Metrical Dindshenchas, ed. Edward Gwynn ~ (translated by Caitlin Matthews)

This feast is often understood to be a celebration of the Irish god Lugh, but this is not the case.  The festival is celebrated primarily in honor of Lugh’s foster-mother, Taltiu, who single-handedly cleared the plains of Ireland of trees in order that agriculture and the grazing of cattle might take place.  This necessary work is remembered and honored in the myth of Taltiu.  The word Lughnasa comes from the old Irish Lugh nasad, or “the binding promise or duty of Lugh.”  On the death of his foster-mother, Lugh caused funeral games to be held in her honor.  Over time, these games devolved into a fair, held annually at Telltown in County meath.  On this eve, the sacred time of harvest is celebrated- a time for harvest suppers and for enjoying all the varieties of food that have been in short supply.

At another level, Lugh’s honoring of Taltiu acknowledges the bounty of harvest and the contract that exists between all living beings and the earth.  It is the acknowledgement that the last sheaf of grain is harvested and honored, to be bound about the churn-dash in the form of a woman of sprouting hair and spreading stalks, or to be woven into complex shapes as a corn dolly.

Make your own promise to the land this evening, as the sun strikes the harvesting earth with its last rays. Meditate upon how you can keep this time sacred in your personal spiritual practice.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies – Prosperity Herb Spell

To work up some prosperity magic, place a handful of dirt in a bowl. Mix in three tablespoons of your favorite prosperity herbs. Hold the bowl in your cupped hands, and charge the dirt mixture with your needs. Place a cleansed stone atop the dirt, and let it sit untouched in a quiet spot in your home or room for a week. Afterward, place the stone somewhere on your desk, or carry it with you when conducting business matters. To recharge the stone, place it back in the dirt for a few days. You can keep the dirt stored in a glass jar or plastic bag until you need it.

“The Goddess Companion”

Brighid of the oracles,
Brighid of the twisted hairs,
Brighid, friend to woman,
Brighid of the fire.
Brighid of the fire’s fuel,
Brighid of the cloak,
Brighid of the tender hands,
Brigid of the oak.
~Irish Invocation To The Fire Goddess

This is the eve of one of the great fire festivals, one shared with other Celtic peoples in Britain and on the continent. The midsummer feast of Lammas (originally Lughnassa) celebrated the harvest. It was a time of fairs and athletic contests, of marriages and other ritual unions. On this evening, for hundreds and perhaps thousands of years, Celtic people would have been gathering at such ritual sites as the hill of Tara, seeing again old friends and making new ones, sharing stories and food and drink around evening fires as they affirmed their bonds of love and friendship. Clans, gathered from far and wide, would reconnect with each other, measuring the growth of the children and the increasing depth of an elder’s wrinkles.

Although such great festivals no longer bind us to friends and family, we can learn from our forebears that such a connection is necessary to a whole and happy life. Creating rituals of our own that affirm the ties that sustain us must be an ongoing part of our lives.
