Light A Candle Today!
In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

Llewellyn’s Spell a Day

Click and Be Grateful
Spell Date: Monday, September 17, 2018

With any luck, your September routines are up and running. Now that you’re back from vacation, work has resumed and schedules have been established. Kids are settling into waking up early and going to school. Lunches get packed and homework gets done.

It feels so busy. It has required a few weeks of focused effort to get everyone moving again after summer. And when we exert so much effort, sometimes we forget to be thankful.

Today, whenever you hear a “click,” pause and be grateful. The kids run out of the house and the door clicks: be thankful for your home, your kids’ health, and everyone’s safety. You shut the car door, or the bus door closes behind you: be grateful for freedom, mobility, infrastructure, and transportation. The door at your workplace closes: give thanks for good work, income, and opportunity.

With each click today, pause, look around, and give thanks. You are blessed. Life is good. Say:

“Thank you.”

Blessing for Medicine
Spell Date: Tuesday, September 18, 2018

No matter how healthy we may be, at some point we’ll have to take medicine. Whether it’s doctor prescribed medication or cough syrup from the store, a bit of blessing magic can help to align our bodies with healing energy and also try to minimize potential side effects from the medicine.

To begin, hold the bottle in your hands and visualize yourself in a healthy state. Mentally send white light into the medicine and say:

“Vital medicine I hereby bless, to
restore my body, good health defend;
diminish all that would cause stress,
absorbing only what will soothe
and mend; for highest good, by free
will, let this magic be fulfilled.”

The medicine should then be taken as prescribed.

Treasure Attraction Spell
Spell Date: Wednesday, September 19, 2018

Today is the much-loved pop culture holiday Talk Like a Pirate Day. Since we’ll all be talking like pirates, why not work a little treasure spell for abundance? We shall aim to acquire our treasure by more admirable means than those used by many pirates.

Get a sheet of paper or a piece of poster board, a pair of scissors, and some glue. Find images of what you consider to be treasure online, in old magazines, or in ads. Remember, treasure is not simply monetary; abundance and treasure come in many forms. You may want to use images of a home, favorite foods, animals and pets, books, craft supplies, or anything you perceive as treasure! Don’t forget (for fun and to link up our energetic theme) an image of a pirate’s treasure chest! Hang the finished product near your altar. To charge, burn an orange candle down safely while envisioning your goal manifesting for the highest good.

A Spell for Insomnia
Spell Date: Thursday, September 20, 2018

If you have had a particularly difficult time falling asleep or staying asleep recently, consider doing some spellcraft to aid the situation.

Before bed, try meditating for a full ten minutes in total silence by sitting up in your bed and clearing your mind to the best of your ability. Count your breaths. As you do this, burn a violet/purple candle that has been anointed with pure lavender essential oil. You may also wish to inscribe the candle with little images of closed eyes and ZZZs. Extinguish the candle before lying down for slumber.

In addition to this candle magick, you may wish to stitch your own lavender-stuffed sleepy time pillow or stuffed animal to sleep with. Finally, if your insomnia is ongoing, consider speaking with a sleep specialist or trying some natural short-term remedies for restfulness, such as tryptophan or melatonin. If you are taking any other medications, be sure to do some research (or check with your doctor) to ensure that nothing will negatively interact.

Finding Balance
Spell Date: Saturday, September 22, 2018

Mabon is observed on an equinox, a time when there are equal parts of light and day. It is the perfect time to reassess and work toward balance in all parts of your life.

Set up your altar to reflect the harvest. Place a black and a white candle on opposite sides of the altar, and place a piece of parchment in between them. On this paper, write down the aspects of your life that you feel need to be brought into balance. As you contemplate those aspects, light the candles and say:

“As day and night are now in balance,
so to let my life find balance.”

Fog-Be-Gone Bath
Spell Date: Sunday, September 23, 2018

I don’t know about you, but I have a very busy life. Between the farm, writing, working, and supporting the needs of my family of five, some days I’m not only physically exhausted but mentally exhausted as well.

Here’s a relaxing way to clear a foggy, exhausted mind.

You will need:
* A few yellow candles
* Bathtub
* Essential oil blend: 4 drops lemongrass and 2 drops rosemary added to 2 ounces of your favorite carrier oil (such as a light olive oil or, my favorite, fractionated coconut oil)

Take your candles into the bathroom and light them. Fill the bathtub with warm water and add a few drops of your essential oil blend to the tub.

Get in the tub, and as you relax, imagine the water washing away the clutter from your life. Take in the clarifying scent of the oil. Imagine your mind clear and focused. See yourself alert and at ease with your daily tasks. When finished, dab a little more of the oil on your temples.

Heartwings Love Notes 446 My Grandmother’s Zinnias

Heartwings says, “It is important to set a good example for others.”

Born in 1879, My paternal grandmother’s life was as different from mine as possible. Prior to World War Two she had visited Italy almost annually. She loved it there and even sent money to help out the family of her gondolier-the equivalent of a taxi driver for the canals of Venice. When I was born, she asked that instead of being called “Granny,” she be known as “Nonny,” a variation on Nona, the Italian word for grandmother. She was very fond of me, her first and only grandchild until eight years later when the first of my siblings was born.

She wasn’t a cookie baking, knitting “granny” sort. She was a forceful, energetic, woman whose hair remained a light brown with occasional gray roots between visits to the hairdresser, for all of her eighty years. She enjoyed my youthful company and we spent many afternoons playing card games or going to the various church fairs that occurred all during the summer months while I was growing up. She would give me money to buy trinkets from the White Elephant table or pony rides, while she checked out what was being offered to the people attending the fairs.

She was a passionate gardener and grew lots of flowers as well as vegetables, in a number of gardens presided over by Mr. Patch, an Irishman with a squeaky voice. I remember that he wore overalls and seemed always to have a gardening implement in his hand. There were two narrow flowerbeds beside the gravel walk that led to her front porch. Each and every year they were lined with Zinnias. I can see them even now, so bright and strong, like her. I never heard her complain or bemoan her condition. She was an inspiring example of strength and fortitude as well as generosity.

While some of her attitudes and opinions were old fashioned-she believed that a “lady” ought not to have a job or work for money, she kept up with current affairs and read three newspapers daily. She also did volunteer work and gave generously to charity. As I advance in age I have grown to appreciate her more than ever. She loved life. Born in a time before automobiles, during the twenties through thirties and forties, she drove her Pontiac through every state in the union. She passed on in 1959. I feel fortunate to have had her in my life for as long as I did. She was a fine example of aging in a positive way, and as I too age, I am even more grateful to her.

May you find ways to set a good example for those who might be inspired by it.

Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

Mabon
by Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs

The crisp autumn wind blows around you. The leaves are changing their colors to sparkling yellow, scorching vermilion and burnished orange. All these signs remind us that Mabon is here.

But what is Mabon exactly? Let’s examine what Mabon is, why it’s celebrated, the different myths that pertain to Mabon, and how Mabon can be interpreted into your life. Mabon is the autumn equinox. The Sabbat is named for the Mabon, the Welsh God who symbolized the male fertilizing principle in the Welsh myths. Mabon is a Fire Festival and one of the Lesser Sabbats, celebrated on September 20, 21, or 22, depending on when the Autumn Equinox falls.

Day and night are in perfect balance again all over the world. After all is gathered in and all the outside work is finished, this is the big festival of the Autumn’s end. From now on the days will get shorter and the weather colder. Astrologers know that this is when the sun enters the sign of Libra, the Balance, which is a fitting symbol of balanced light and darkness.

In Rome, this equinox marked the Festival of Dionysus, the God of Wine and Revelry, whose party lasted for as many days as revelers could remain upright! Mabon is just one of the many names for this holiday: Autumn Equinox, Harvest Home, Alban Elfed and Winter Finding are others. There are myths that tell different stories but offer similar insight and symbolism into the holiday. The story of Mabon is one of them.

The birth of Mabon ap Modron (Great Son of the Great Mother) is celebrated at the Equinox. He is born from his mother Modron (Great Mother), who is seen as the Guardian of the Otherworld, the Earth, and the Protector. Mabon was stolen from his mother, Modron when he was three nights old. In different versions of the story, he was three years old. In one version of the myth the Eagle, the Owl, the Blackbird, the Stag and the Salmon rescued him, while in another King Arthur was the one who saved him. During his captivity, Mabon dwelled in a magical Otherworld -Madron’s Womb. Madron’s womb was a place of challenge and nurturing, and while there Mabon grew in strength and wisdom before being reborn as the Son of Light, his mother’s Champion.

Another myth that pertains to Mabon is that of Persephone and Demeter. Autumn begins when Persephone returns to Hades and the Underworld to live. The myth begins as Demeter’s daughter Kore goes out to pick some flowers in a field. The earth opened up and Hades stole her away to become his wife. While in the Underworld, Kore refused to eat anything until Hades finally convinced her to eat six pomegranate seeds. Kore did not know at the time that the seeds she had eaten would make her have to stay in the Underworld. Finally, Hades persuaded her to marry him; thus she named changed from Kore to Persephone. For nine days Demeter searched for Kore and in desperation, she asked Helios, the Sun God if he knew anything. Helios told Demeter that Zeus had given Kore to Hades. Enraged, Demeter cursed the earth so that is wouldn’t yield any crops. Zeus frantically asked her why she had stopped the growth on earth. Demeter replied that until her daughter was safely home nothing would grow. Zeus came to the conclusion that Kore/Persephone would live with Hades for six months, the same amount of time as the seeds she had eaten, and would then return to her mother to live the rest of the year. Thankful, Demeter lifted her curse creating Spring. In Autumn her curse renews as she grieves her daughter’s return to Hades and the Underworld.

Mabon is the old Anglo-Celtic festival of Harvest Home, a respite from the work of harvesting and a celebration of thanks. In remembrance of that time, it is often referred to as the “Witches’ Thanksgiving” and finishes off the witches’ year. It is one of the oldest harvest celebrations in Europe.

Harvest Home activities include cider pressing, grain threshing, dancing and feasting (of course!) and the crowning of the Harvest King and Queen. The King and Queen become the earthly vessel for the God and Goddess to reside in during the Mabon ritual and festivities. The English folk song “Lavender Blue, Lavender Green” was a song that grew out of Mabon observances. Blue is the color of the Harvest Lord and green of the Harvest Lady.

Mabon marks the end of the second harvest and is a time when the majority of crops have been gathered. Nuts, apples, grapes and berries are featured items at this Sabbat feast. Jams, jellies, and wine are made at this time. In many traditions, there is a taboo against eating berries after Mabon unless they have been made into jam or
wine.

In Scotland and Wales, Mabon wines were poured onto the ground to honor the aging Goddess as she swiftly moved into her Crone aspect. Celtic lands were not well known for growing grapes, so blackberry wine became a Celtic specialty, especially in Ireland, where blackberries are sacred to the goddess Brigit. Vines figure prominently in Mabon symbolism. They are used as decoration for altars and as raw material for making wreaths and crowns.

In Ireland, and in parts of Western Scotland and Cornwall, it became customary during Mabon to visit burial mounds, called cairns, to honor dead ancestors, especially female ones. This practice may have had two origins. One was to visit the dead and appease them so that, when they visited the human world at Samhain, they would be inclined toward kindness and good will. The second origin may have been in ancient Ireland, where a group of female ancestor worshippers based its beliefs on the notion that, upon death, all human souls were reabsorbed into the wombs which bore them, and therefore, only women inhabited Tir-Na-Nog, the Irish land of the Dead. Women were the ones required to decorate and adorn the graves at Mabon, while the men prepared the nearby feasting site.

Cairns and cemeteries were feared by many of our ancestors as places where evil spirits lingered. Approaching such places at Mabon was deemed safe, however, because it was believed that the balance of light and dark would act like an equilateral cross and offer protection from any negative spirits. Fires were lit at cairns, or carried in gourds similar to our jack-o-lanterns, to further frighten away baneful spirits.

Some Pagans question why there is a focus on death at Mabon a theme usually associated with Samhain. Mabon begins the season of Autumn when leaves die, and nature, having given forth an abundance of new life-giving foods, withers so that the cycle may begin again. When we harvest what we gather, it provides our families and us food, but the plants and animals we harvest must die to provide that nutrition. The deities are aging and the God will soon die, as will the old year. For our Pagan ancestors, who marked time by the turning of the Wheel of the Year, this was a natural time to reflect upon the meaning of death. Mabon is not just a celebration of life, but also one of death. When contemplating this aspect of the holiday, you might want to think about those who passed away during the year. One way to honor them would be to place an apple on their marker or headstone. This is an old Celtic tradition of honoring the dead, and the apple also reminds us of the circle of life, from passing to rebirth.

Mabon is not only a time when night and day are equal, but all things are in balance for a brief moment. The Norse believed one’s fate for the coming year was sealed at this time. Divinations were done to ascertain whether one’s life in the past year had been pleasing to the deities.

An ancient symbol of the wealth of the harvest is the Horn of Plenty or Cornucopia. It is both a phallic symbol and when filled with the fruits of the harvest, a womb gushing forth its Autumn bounty.

Modern Mabon activities can include hay rides, a custom that grew out of riding the full hay wagon back home after it had been fully loaded with the day’s harvest. This ride eventually took on a party atmosphere as families sang together and enjoyed the Autumn countryside, while they rode home to partake of the season’s bounty. You might want to host a barn dance, another European custom that grew out of the Pagan celebration of the completion of the harvest, and one which continued in lands colonized by Europeans.

Since Mabon is considered the Witches Thanksgiving, it is very appropriate to celebrate by having a grand dinner with the foods that you have harvested. You could also donate food and time to those who are less fortunate than you. What could be more uplifting than to see a hungry person receive what they so desperately need? If you decide to have a dinner, share stories with your family about what you have learned this past year and listen to them as they share their stories. Now is the time to think about all that you have to be thankful for. It is a time to reflect on the lessons that you have learned, and your deeds and actions. Record your thoughts on the evening, what you felt and what you have learned from the past year. This is what gives your Book of Shadows true importance and worth.

The Autumn Equinox is a balance of light and dark. You might want to think about people with causes who are fighting for a just reason. Think about how you could help them, either by devoting some time to their cause or by sending them energy to benefit them.

Equinoxes are a chance to stop and adjust. Things are moving fast now and preparations and intention for the coming Winter must be made. The days are shortening again and the increasingly cold weather, although not yet severe, is there to remind us that we have to respond to it and change it. The quarter points represent changes in the Earth’s energy and these changes affect us all on a personal level. It is also a time to reflect on the past year to see if there are any habits that need to be discarded. We can look back to see if we have accomplished the tasks that we had set out to do at the beginning of the year.

Mabon, like its polar opposite, Ostara, is a time of balance. Only now, instead of looking outward to the coming Summer, we begin looking inward, preparing ourselves for the Winter to come. The Spring and Summer have been open, flowering, productive times of the year. At Harvest Home, we see this part of the cycle ending. We have labored and earned our reward, as well as our rest. After we have rested a while, we will begin to plan ahead for the next growing season. The cold, dark months ahead will naturally make us go inward. The light that has burned brightly in an outer sense will now burn brightly within us, as we have prepared, not only on a physical level but on a spiritual one as well. At this time we look ahead and see Winter coming. The cold weather makes us spend more time inside: physically, mentally and spiritually. We are more given to introspection, planning and sitting by the fire. Now is a good time to get a companion animal if you wish to have one, cut firewood, seek out reading material for the dark nights ahead, and plan your winter craft projects, so you will be ready with them when the air turns crisp and the nights draw in.

Be aware of entering a new phase as Winter draws near. Give thanks to the God and Goddess for all the good things which you have reaped in your own harvest this Summer. Pledge yourself to maintain what you have gained throughout the year. Decide what it is you want to weave into your life in the upcoming year and start planning for those things.

Mabon is a very special holiday and time of the year. We see the Wheel turning and the seasons changing. These changes happen outside of us, and within us as well. As we reflect on how many things we have to be thankful for, we see how blessed we are by the God and Goddess. It is a time to think about those who do not have as much as we do and help them, a time to think about the ones who have passed away but are not as far away as we might think, and a time to think about the harvest in our lives. So as the nights grow longer, the days colder, and the foliage around us more vibrant let’s remember all that we do have; and raise joyful thanks to Those who have blessed us with Their love and gifts.

Mabon Invocation

Leaves shudder
And blush at your passing, Lord
Remembering the days of summer
When you, Green and pollen bright
Danced in the warm, caressing winds
Proud and vital as the upthrusting oak.
But now the sword-edge of frost
Looms from the mist
Balancing night and day
A blade Poised at your throat.
You shudder,
And the leaves shudder with you.
You grip your heart to the branch
Savoring that one last touch
Then you leap Spiraling through the crisp air
As you dive upon the frost-blade
Dying the leaves
Red with your willing sacrifice.
You rise, your lips
Pale as the blade buried within you
And make your way to the darkened shore
At your feet, the leaves rustle and sigh
And shudder
And blush at your passing

Autumn Equinox

The Autumn Equinox is a time of harvesting and preparation. It is a time to reflect on your life and to start making plans for the future. Autumn Equinox, also known as ‘Mabon’, is the midpoint between the Summer and Winter Solstices. As at Spring Equinox, days and nights are…

Autumn’s Seasonal Turn

Fall represents a time of gathering. As an expression in nature, this is the time when crops are harvested. Leaves are changing to brilliant colors, the nights are becoming cooler and longer, as the days grow shorter. Gathering and elimination are the traits of this season and can be seen in nature, as well as human health.

This is a good time of year to be more conscious about and take care of the lungs, large intestine, and our skin, by nurturing them well. The change in weather affects our respiratory and immune system, so it is a good time to build up our defenses. Sometimes, we feel “stuck” in Fall, both emotionally and physically. Eating a diet with more fiber can help the large intestine to better move things along, while our mind must be clear and focused in order to process the emotional changes of the season. Our skin is our first line of defense, so keeping it moisturized and supple will both protect it and allow for a smoother transition during a time of colder more harsh weather ahead.

We can also look at Fall as a life marker or cycle in our lives. By the season of Fall, our lives have “turned a corner”. It is our third quadrant of development from our 50’s through our 60’s. This period in our lives represents an awareness of how life is perceived. The “new” ideas that come around now, tend to be seen through jaded eyes, as by now, we feel as if we have seen and done it all. Our caution comes as we seem to question more and take other things for granted much less.

Fall also represents a new-found knowledge of prosperity. It is often the time in our lives when we actually understand the basis of prosperity, not just being money or fame, but flourishing and thriving in our productive years. This suggests that “sensing” actually means the use of our perception in a much keener approach. We tend to be more observant and are more conscious of our intuition or 6th sense.

Fall is the raw, unprocessed information we take in and discern more directly and with immediate consciousness. We no longer take things for granted as we look for much deeper connections. We are more discerning in our relationships and have a better grasp at the art of sensuality.

In this season of our lives, we tend to switch to more left brain thinking or perform tasks that have to do with logic, such as making better-informed decisions, comprehending our surroundings faster and seeing further ahead into our thoughts. These are steps out of the peak of our enthusiasm and into our waking consciousness. This is now the exact opposite of our “Spring”.

Fantastical Fall is the approach of our Autumn shadows. Shadows we start to see and feel, yet we simply push away or choose to ignore. These are shadows of darkness, aging, loss, and death.

Gemstone: Approach to Fall
~ O harvest mother, bring us near,
a place of love when Fall is here.
To bless and honor hearth and home,
when chill comes round and changes so…

~ Andrew Pacholyk MS. L.Ac.

In each aspect of our lives, there are certain “priorities” we find important and tend to focus more on. This is often based on our age or need to fit in, our self-discovery or need to be recognized. Our priorities of life are the cornerstones we use to define ourselves, better understand who we are or are sometimes forced to recognize out of circumstance.

Our “Fall” priorities are focused more on the spiritual approach to life and how we can understand it. It is part intuition, part conscious thought. It is believing more in the metaphysical than the physical. It is taking in the better understanding of divination and intuition, the strength of forgiveness and the gathering of knowledge through journeys and therefore, enhancing our prosperity!

Go for It
By Madisyn Taylor

The universe is fully supportive of what you want, but it is up to you to go for it.

There are times in our lives when all the signs seem to be pointing us in a particular direction. Our thoughts and dreams are echoed in the songs and stories we hear and the media we see. Maybe the message we are getting from the universe doesn’t even make sense in the “real” world, but somewhere inside, these urges feel right. Maybe you feel you are being told to move to a new city although your life where you are is just fine. Or maybe you feel the desire to pursue a new direction in your career when it never really interested you before. When we spend time getting in touch with our higher selves, our intuition sends us directives to lead us to become our best and most fulfilled selves. And when we are open and listening, the next step is to take action and go for it.

Once we make the decision to pursue our inner urgings, the universe sets into motion the means for all sorts of details to fall into place. A sense of peace will come over us, because we know that any questions will no longer make us wonder if our dreams are possible, but how to make them happen. Instead of deterring us from our goal, these questions only serve to clarify our focus to move us forward. We need not throw caution to the wind to follow our dream. The positive shift in our energy affects everything around us. Like a rush of water, it goes ahead to clear debris from our path so that we can go forward. Our new attitude also attracts likeminded people. Sometimes even the most unlikely angels arrive to help us along our way with the information and support we need.

Wherever your dreams are pointing you today, take a step. Take action and manifest your inner urges and soul whisperings.

Stephen Halpert
Murder In North Grafton #8

Sippi grabbed some coffee from the deli near the police station. This morning she needed something more than her usual herbal tea. She wondered how many others in the Department shared Parnell and Kinder’s animosity toward her?
She arrived at the station in time for the departmental meeting called by Chief Redtoe. “Sit down everyone, I have news to share.” The Chief looked weary; he sounded dour. Holding a medical report, he shook his head and began to speak.
“Charley,” he looked toward Charley Smiles owner and editor of the town weekly, leaning against a table near the coffee machine. “Everything’s off the record.”
Charley nodded. He reached inside his jacket, touched his mini recorder. “Of course,” he said.
Redtoe nodded. He cleared his throat. “I’ve just returned from the hospital where Sgt. Parnell and Kinder were admitted earlier this morning. Two of my best men were victims of what was undoubtedly retaliatory gang violence. Both were brutally beaten, sprayed in white paint, and left in Sgt. Parnell’s station wagon. They were doubtless on an undercover operation seeking out dangerous drug dealers.”
“Out of Milford?” a patrolman asked. “That’s where mob stuff usually comes from.”
“Not at liberty to divulge anything,” Redtoe said. “Except to say I believe they were undergoing a high security sting operation.”
Sippi had to work to keep herself from laughing out loud. She noticed Charley Chico staring intently at her. He was frowning. She wondered how she would cope with him for the duration of this murder investigation. Just play it dumb she thought to herself.
“What happened to Mel and Ellis,” someone asked.
Redtoe consulted the medical report. He cleared his throat. “We’re hopeful Parnell will recover his mobility. As for Kinder, a specialist has been called in to determine the extent of the nerve damage to his right hand. Both are on indefinite sick leave.”
Sippi made it a point to continue to look blank. Chico kept staring at her. From his expression Sippi could tell she couldn’t trust him with the truth.
“Furthermore,” Redtoe continued. “I want all patrols doubled. I want quiet streets even prior to midnight. Pick up any suspicious characters and bring them in for questioning. Check all your usual informants. I want this incident solved fast.”
He adjourned the meeting. Sippi felt like she was in a movie.
“Hello,” Charley Smiles said. “So, you’re Sippi Bopp.”
Sippi nodded and smiled at the editor.
“I’m an enormous fan of your Aunt Bee.”
Sippi saw Charley Chico slipping away, headed for the parking lot.
Charley Smiles checked his gold Rolex. “Almost time for lunch. May I invite you to dine with me up the hill at the Inn?”
Sippi nodded. “That’s fine as long as you know I can’t divulge anything about the investigation.”
His eyes looked mirthful, playful. He smiled. “Not to worry, I can get whatever’s to be divulged from Tom Mallory. He lowered his voice. “What I really want to talk to you about is your Aunt Bea. I’ve always found her absolutely fascinating.”
“Many do,” Sippi smiled. “Have you heard she’s planning on opening a jazz club in the new ballpark complex in Worcester?”
Charley raised his eyebrows. “Why that’s wonderful! You’ll have to tell me more.” He led her to his vintage yellow Cadillac and made cheerful conversation as he drove them to the Inn.”
Meanwhile Charley Chico parked his cruiser and entered the hospital. He was directed to the room Parnell and Kinder shared. Parnell was heavily medicated. Kinder’s right arm was in a splint. His eyes were dazed. Charley Chico wondered if the concussion protocol had revealed anything ominous.
Kinder stared at Chico but said nothing. Parnell was comatose, maybe still in shock.
Charley Chico looked from one to the other. “What the hell happened?” he said. Neither answered.
After a few minutes he left and went back to the station.
At the inn, Charley Smiles and Sippi ordered and the waitress left. He leaned his elbows on the table and grinned. “I’ve been a lifelong fan of your Aunt Bea,” he said.
Sippi checked out the rustic antique furnishings. “I’m sure she’d be happy to see you Mr. Smiles. Especially now that she’s going to be opening her club in Worcester.”
Charley nodded.” Call me Charley. Makes me feel less like a relic and more like a contemporary.” He sipped his drink. “Oh, your Aunt Bea and I go back a long way. Why If I’d had my druthers, back then I’d have married her when I had the chance.”
Rather taken aback by Charley Smiles candor, Sippi raised her eyebrows. “Do tell!” She smiled and sipped her fancy bottled water, glad to be far from the subject of the two grisly murders. The waitress brought their lunch and she dug into her generous Cobb salad.
“Ask her if if she remembers me,” Charley said. “Maybe I still have a chance.” He looked like a wistful schoolboy with thinning hair.
Sippi smiled. “You think?” she said. This conversation had taken her completely by surprise. For once she looked forward to chatting with Aunt Bea.
Later that afternoon as she returned to her condo she saw Inspector Mallory’s cruiser in the parking lot. Seeing her he climbed out, nodded and followed her inside.
He checked his watch. “Bopp, I stopped by to ask you to join me at Marjorie Latimer’s annual Fall soiree. She usually invites important people from town plus her intimates from church. You’ll have a chance to meet what’s come to be known at church as the ladies of the Eighties.”
“You mean you’re putting me in a room full of possible murder suspects?”
Mallory raised his eyebrows. “My parishioners!” He exclaimed. “Well maybe one murderer, if we’re lucky.”
Sippi nodded. “Give me five minutes to change.”
“Oh, and while you’re at it,” Mallory said. He handed her an evidence bag containing gravel sprinkled with white paint. “Collected this outside at the top of the slope leading down the hill from your driveway.”
Sippi tried to maintain her composure. “I guess you want me to explain.”
But Mallory shook his head. “No, no need to. Just get rid of it. I wouldn’t want anyone to think that drug lords populate your condo complex,” he said with a smile.
So he does know what’s going on, Sippi thought, that is very interesting.

Aries
Personal theme: I am!!
Fire & cardinal sign: March 21 — April 19

Your horoscope for this week:

As a fiery Aries, you thrive on challenges, and you`ll often respond swiftly, then think things through in detail later. However, because the Aries Full Moon, on Tuesday the 25th, brings crucial situations to a head and heightens your feelings, you could act rashly. Knowing that, discuss the matter in question and plans with somebody who`s both courageous and wise, then act once, and powerfully..

If you spend too long with a friend or relative who is feeling low, you may start feeling down yourself. Feeling trapped in a situation that makes you miserable is making you feel less than your usual happy self. Think about it and you`ll see it`s time to make some changes. Varying your routine could help improve your health. Surround yourself with optimistic, positive people and start exercising more. If energy is low, consider taking a blood test for vitamin deficiency.

With Tuesday`s Full Moon in your sign, it might seem to some that you are quite literally full of yourself. That would be harsh. What`s most likely is that your problem-solving antenna is in full working order and that having identified what ought to have been done weeks ago, you`re ready to make clear to others where they need to take responsibility and where you are content to take the lead. Actually, content might not be the right word: it`s perhaps more the case that you see that if you want a job doing, then you have to be involved. It`s probable that you will be in the driving seat and leading a team under very definite timeline. Achieving your objective might well feel as though it`s going to take all that you`ve got; but this reason, you might give thought to factoring in health treatments that support your system. There`s high probability that these next six months will demand much of you.

Taurus
Personal theme: I have!!
Earth & fixed sign: April 20 — May 20

Your horoscope for this week:

While you often wish you could shift the burden for certain tedious matters elsewhere, deep down you know these aren`t just your responsibility, you`re better informed than others. What`s more, sudden changes demand a review of existing arrangements, if not a top to bottom rethink. While unsettling in the short term, this gives you an excuse to alter certain increasingly troublesome arrangements, and without others` agreement.

New routines make an appearance in a work or group setting.. Change always unsettles you and you might initially view these with disapproval. Before voicing your concerns, hold back and observe. At least one new arrangement could suit you down to the ground. Make the effort to get to know the people you meet, and you won`t regret it. A new friend will show a surprising degree of loyalty and generosity. Are you single? A surprising turn around could be just around the corner.

Whether it not you take the geo (earth) or helio (sun)centric perspective, Uranus is now very definitely moving through your sign: its first visit to this area of the zodiac since the 1930s. It`s probable you weren`t alive then! This then, is a new vibration. One of the upsides of this is that your entrepreneurial spirit is likely not far from the surface. Having seen how things ought not to be done, you may be ready to take the reins and show what is possible. To some, it might appear that you`re being exceptionally `bull in the china` shop. In fact, and especially in the days following Tuesday`s Full Moon, you could show a level of determination and even genius that leaves others quite amazed. It would be wise not to underestimate your leadership skills or your ability to bring a team together. In cooperation, you could indeed push through what has felt to be a barrier in recent weeks and identify the next stage of the plan that needs to be accomplished before your birthday next year.

Gemini
Personal theme: I think!!
Air sign: May 21 — June 20

Your horoscope for this week:

With both your ruler Mercury and the Sun moving to accent love and life`s pleasures, these are exactly what will be on your mind. In some cases, you`ll finally make plans with close friends or loved ones; but, also, at long last, you`ll discuss tricky issues. Whatever you do, each step is progress, and increases the joy in one of the most important areas of your life.

A worthwhile achievement will encourage you to value yourself more. Celebrate this moment by giving yourself a nice reward. Watch for any opportunity to promote your own interests and don`t be reluctant to charge a fair price for your services. Background activities will keep you busy a lot of the time. Normally you like to be where the action is but by working behind the scenes you will be able to develop a new project or idea without any interference or distraction.

With the both the Sun and Mercury having now moved into the research and development area of your solar chart, your creative prowess ought not to be far from the surface. Around Tuesday`s Full Moon especially, your insight could be particularly appreciated. It may be that you now see ways in which presentation could be improved considerably. A strong possibility is that another culture will have had great impact on you in the last 12 weeks. A fusion of ideas might even, before the weekend, result in you coming up with a concept that honours the traditional whilst also being very much 2018. Exciting as all this appears to be, it would be wise not to overestimate your physical abilities. Your nervous system might well need support given the challenges ahead. It might then be wise to arrange health check-up or to adjust your diet to maintain fitness at all levels.

Cancer
Personal theme: I feel!!
Water & cardinal sign: June 21 — July 22

Your horoscope for this week:

For ages it`s been clear elements of your way of living or working need to change, but despite serious efforts, you`ve faced constant obstacles, in various forms. Suddenly everything`s falling into place, and virtually overnight. This requires working closely with others, if not yielding to decisions that don`t thrill you. Still, proceed. Within a short time, you`ll realise this is kick-starting a series of life-changing, and timely, events.

A loved one could receive a sum of money as a gift, prize or bonus. Although it won`t be a huge amount, it will help towards financing a weekend family trip or outing. You will all benefit from going on a fun trip together and this will provide a much-needed change of scenery. Friends are in a sunny mood. Colleagues are helpful, and this will make anything that you do together a joy and a pleasure. You might be asked to join a formal charitable organisation.

It might be as well to anticipate a super busy week. The combination of Equinox, plus Full Moon aligned with Chiron, and then a major aspect between the Sun and Mars, suggest this will be an active week for all signs. Those born under your sign have a pronounced ability to support others going through crises. That trait may well be to the fore. In fact, you could get a name as an arch- problem-solver. True, this may not be a role you particularly wish to have. Yet it`s likely that your involvement with a large group or association, that your particular skills and talents will be particularly appreciated. In working partnership with someone born under Scorpio, you might come up with a plan that borders on genius. It certainly seems to be super creative and will perhaps require that strong action is taken before the Last Quarter Moon in your sign on October 2. This deadline though might be workable.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——-

Leo
Personal theme: I will!!
Fire & fixed sign: July 23 — August 22

Your horoscope for this week:

Usually, your passionate, if not headstrong, nature is an asset. However, you could reject ideas, offers you regard as uninteresting or, equally, battle changes in longstanding arrangements. The trick is to overcome your impulse to say no and, if you can`t agree, at least explore what`s on offer properly. What you learn will shift your perspective enough you`ll soon be exploring those options, and enthusiastically.

A social event or casual gathering will bring some new and interesting people into your circle. You could hardly hope for a more delightful few days when friendship activities make you happy and optimistic. People who hardly know you seem sensitive to your needs and feelings. Take advantage if someone offers to ease you of some of your duties and responsibilities. An agreement made with a senior colleague will have positive long-term consequences.

As the week begins it should seem as though a breath of fresh air is blowing through. True, there might also be a crisis waiting in the wings on Tuesday. This though could actually excite you. With others now fully aware of what you`ve been trying to achieve in recent weeks, you may well find that you now have a small army of people around you. Irritatingly however they might need to have the history and development of a situation explained several times over. In fact, it might not be an unwise move to have a list of bullet points summarising the situation ready to hand. By Thursday, and a promising aspect between the Sun and Mars now in your opposite sign, collaboration and a working partnership should be a source of pleasure. True, together you might feel as though you`re under some kind of tight schedule or even deadline. These conditions though could find you at your very best and determined to reach an equitable agreement within the first week of October.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——-

Virgo
Personal theme: I analyse!!
Earth sign: August 23 — September 22

Your horoscope for this week:

It`s not that you`ve been ignoring certain practical or financial issues but, rather, you`ve been dealing with distractions, some pressing, others personal. However, with your ruler Mercury and the Sun moving to accent these matters, and Tuesday`s Full Moon bringing existing issues to a head, these can`t wait. Admittedly, some of these are tricky. Still, having them resolved once and for all will be a huge relief.

You may not sense it and you will find it hard to believe it, but Lady Luck has her eye on you this week. This will be obvious in a whole host of ways including the chance for you to get the best value for your money when shopping online. Look for great bargains on electronics. You are mentally alert and ready to apply your creative skills to your work. Showcase your talents and good ideas and you could find opportunity comes your way in the form of an unexpected offer..

It appears that someone else`s financial problem has become yours. Around Tuesday`s Full Moon, your problem-solving abilities will surely be put to the test. This could be awkward – especially if legal or international matters are involved. A twist on this would be fluctuations in currency exchange that would bring penalties if not acted upon quickly. It may be that you`re not the only person in this situation and that in banding together with others, you present a strong force. True, even then you might be advised that you can`t win. You could certainly however make life rather more uncomfortable for someone who feels they`ve got away with something which in fact, may not be the case at all. The problem here being that it could take until December to get resolution. Property issues appear to have your attention with a significant milestone reached. Though this might only be a decision as to how best to make use of space, it could nevertheless be an important moment.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——-

Libra
Personal theme: I balance!!
Air & cardinal sign: September 23 — October 22

Your horoscope for this week:

For ages you`ve been struggling to organise plans, some personal, many involving others and a few more worldly matters, but have faced frustrating delays. However, with the Sun and Mercury moving into Libra and the pivotal New Moon in your sign on 9 October, you`ll make up for lost time. Unsure about plans? Take those first steps, and soon the rest will be obvious.

You are starting to like someone you never thought you`d get on with. They haven`t been the easiest person to know. Spend more time together and you`ll see why they seemed so aloof and unapproachable. When they let down their defences it will draw you closer to each other. Someone in the family wants your views about some proposed changes. Give them a chance to tell you all the details. You will have some strong opinions, don`t leave them guessing: tell them how you feel.

It`s generally thought that those of your sign have diplomatic skills. That may be true, and with both the Sun and Mercury passing through your sign, it could be that others look to you to display this talent. However, Tuesday`s Full Moon could find you caught between a rock and a hard place and unable to find exactly the right words to get over a difficulty. This isn`t to say that you can`t yet win through, but it may be necessary mid-week, to first retreat, gather troops and then come up with innovative solutions to difficulties that have been around since at least the lunar eclipse at the end of January. Discussions with those who live and work at some distance from you could increase resulting in the last few days of September exceptionally busy. Positively however, an idea that`s been incubating in your research and development department since late last year should gather considerable weight and perhaps offer earning potential in October.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——-

Scorpio & Ophiuchus
Personal theme: I desire!!
Water & fixed signs: October 23 — November 21

Your horoscope for this week:

Little annoys you more than having decisions that should be yours to make taken over by others or, perhaps, organisations. Whatever the case, and there could be several such matters, it`s actually for the best. You`d reject certain changes or new plans, mostly because of past experience or lack of familiarity. However, others will be more adventurous, which would definitely be in your best interests.

Matters that are worrying you are causing you to have doubts about a recent decision. You haven`t talked about this with anyone. If you share your uncertainties with a friend you trust, they might help to ease your mind. Are you single? You could be surprised when a neighbour or colleague opens their heart. It is possible they`ve been attracted to you for some time and now they don`t want to hide it. This interesting and unexpected turn of events will stop you in your tracks.

It`s not abnormal for the week after the Equinox (this Sunday) to prove exceptionally busy. This time though, with Tuesday`s Full Moon aligning with Chiron, an unusual number of people are likely to be faced with major difficulties. Your problem-solving ability will surely shine through. True, you might have concern as to whether or not resources will stretch as far as is required. You might also be dismayed to learn that a marketing exercise has not been successful and will have to be rerun within days. This though, could find you at your very best. By Thursday you should be in full action mode – most likely in partnership with someone born under either Taurus or Libra whose wordsmith skills make a very real difference to a letter or e-mail. What is likely important, is that there is room left to manoeuvre even after a very difficult discussion.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——-

Sagittarius
Personal theme: I see!!
Fire sign: November 22 — December 21

Your horoscope for this week:

Most Sagittarians are self-sufficient, so much you rarely ask for help. Yet the coming weeks` planetary setup accents situations you`re unfamiliar with or that require teamwork. Still, you`ll be tempted to do it all yourself. Don`t. Not only are others better equipped, the individuals you work with or encounter and what you learn promise to add to your life in wonderful, and largely unexpected, ways.

You are proud of your skills but sometimes wonder if other people appreciate your abilities. Someone in the background has recognised your potential and is making calls on your behalf. A combination of factors will ensure you get the recognition your efforts deserve. Your social life takes a casual turn as friends and neighbours drop in for a quick coffee and a chat. Be discreet and diplomatic in what you say; you don`t want your words to come back to bite you.

It would be most unusual if, following on from Sunday`s Equinox that others didn`t want to network with you. The accent is very much on associations and groups and your place within them. By Tuesday`s Full Moon however, news concerning a younger person who feels caught in something of a trap (possibly financial), could dominate thinking. How best to help this person who, if not of another generation, may be someone with whom you share a love interest, might require that you downed tools and work out a way to be of assistance. Travel may be necessary. It`s just possible too, that you will be asked to assist with the wording of the document that really ought to be produced by the end of September, but which could actually be delayed a few days into October. There may be many things to check before this is distributed. What may be deeply concerning, is the lack of professionalism shown by someone who ought to have been on the case weeks, – if not months ago – and whose apparent irresponsibility, now threatens to destabilise the team.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——-

Capricorn
Personal theme: I use!!
Earth & cardinal sign: December 22 — January 19

Your horoscope for this week:

Recently there`s been little mention of what were, relatively recently, persistent concerns. However, Tuesday`s challenge by the Sun to your ruler Saturn accents these, and forces you and others to, first, define these clearly, then act. Worrying as that seems, suddenly ideas if not solutions appear. Better yet, these will prove helpful with other, equally complex, matters that have also been very much on your mind.

Changes around and about the house could get people flustered. Loved ones are enthusiastic and also a little nervous about your ideas. You feel you have made the right choices. Encourage others to share their concerns and help them see there`s nothing to worry about. Try and avoid financial speculation of any kind. You might be tempted to enjoy a bit of a gamble but especially if this is with money you`d put aside for a specific purpose you could regret your actions

By Tuesday`s Full Moon, your problem-solving abilities will surely be put to the test. We are of course at that time of year when career matters have much of your attention. Determining the way forward, networking where necessary and, most likely, engaging with someone whose expertise you value, may be high on your priorities list. However, at this Full Moon Chiron takes up position at the base of your solar chart. There may be family, domestic or asset-related matters requiring as much attention. Much could be achieved before the Sun makes excellent aspect to Mars on Thursday. Indeed, if you need to negotiate, doing so between Tuesday and Thursday would arguably be the best dates: though of course much depends on your personal chart. Keep in mind too that before the end of September it may be necessary to remind someone of their responsibilities and where they need to up their game.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——-

Aquarius
Personal theme: I know!!
Air & fixed sign: January 20 — February 18

Your horoscope for this week:

On the 11th, the forthright Mars moved into Aquarius, to remain until mid-November. This triggers a review of existing activities, goals and relationships with others, of a personal or more worldly nature. Initially you may dwell more on issues, your motivation devising solutions that works for everybody. However, the resulting insights will inspire your thinking regarding future plans and the individuals with whom you`d undertaken them.

No matter how hard you try to concentrate, there will be distractions and diversions. Even your most practical friends seem to be stopping you from getting on with your own concerns. People expect you to lend a hand with whatever it is they are doing. If your career is giving you a bumpy ride, this is probably due to absenteeism. Colleagues know they can rely on you to cover for them in their absence but if this continues, your own health could start to suffer.

With the Sun and Mercury now crossing into another of the Air signs, mentally you could be at your best. This is perhaps fortuitous, as, by Tuesday`s Full Moon you could be alerted to a difficulty that will require `all hands to the deck` if a problem is to be overcome before the end of the month. It may be necessary for you to take the lead. That might even require travel or discussions with those who live some distance away. That it is vital that they keep to a schedule may be something you need to reinforce time and time again. Meanwhile, your own affairs – and particularly your long-term financial arrangements – might also require extra care before the end of September. Indeed, by giving this attention, you could save yourself money later, and possibly ensure that a deposit is paid back in full when the time comes.

Pisces
Personal theme: I believe!!
Water sign: February 19 — March 20

Your horoscope for this week:

For several weeks you`ve sidestepped confrontations with several individuals, some because they can be very difficult but, as much, because they`d expect you to deal with everything. Yet, in several situations, you`ve no choice. That being the case, state your demands clearly, and ensure they`re understood. This may rouse complaints, but as others are aware they`re not doing their fair share, they`ll soon get involved.

An offer to enter into some form of partnership could be hard to resist. Although you won`t rush into this venture and will give it more thought, it could be a lucrative opportunity. Working alongside a talented friend will keep you motivated. A meeting with a senior colleague will not be as daunting as you expected. It could turn out there are interests you both share and before you know it, you will start to relax and enjoy the conversation.

It`s probable you`ve already had a heads up that different types of problems are now headed your way. It`s not that you don`t have experience of financial difficulties but are perhaps only now realising how active you need to be in resolving difficulties. It could be that it`s actually not difficulties of your own that are challenging, but those of someone close or even of the company you work for. It would be wise not to underestimate your powers of persuasion. By Thursday you could negotiate a better deal. True, there may be limitations – most likely to do with time. Though obviously much depends on your personal chart, the way in which you present a difficulty and the solutions to it, will surely be compelling and could at least buy a few days if not longer. At a different level entirely, and by Thursday, you may be surprised to discover that someone has run with one of your ideas and is now crediting and promoting you and your talents in ways you`d never have expected.
