Upon that night, when fairies light
On Cassilis Downans dance,
Or owre the lays, in splendid blaze,
On sprightly coursers prance;
Or for Colean the route is ta’en,
Beneath the moon’s pale beams;
There, up the cove, to stray and rove,
Among the rocks and streams
To sport that night.
Among the bonny winding banks,
Where Doon rins, wimplin’ clear,
Where Bruce ance ruled the martial ranks,
And shook his Carrick spear,
Some merry, friendly, country-folks,
Together did convene,
To burn their nits, and pou their stocks,
And haud their Halloween
Fu’ blithe that night.
The lasses feat, and cleanly neat,
Mair braw than when they’re fine;
Their faces blithe, fu’ sweetly kythe,
Hearts leal, and warm, and kin’;
The lads sae trig, wi’ wooer-babs,
Weel knotted on their garten,
Some unco blate, and some wi’ gabs,
Gar lasses’ hearts gang startin’
Whiles fast at night.
Then, first and foremost, through the kail,
Their stocks maun a’ be sought ance;
They steek their een, and graip and wale,
For muckle anes and straught anes.
Poor hav’rel Will fell aff the drift,
And wander’d through the bow-kail,
And pou’t, for want o’ better shift,
A runt was like a sow-tail,
Sae bow’t that night.
Then, staught or crooked, yird or nane,
They roar and cry a’ throu’ther;
The very wee things, todlin’, rin,
Wi’ stocks out owre their shouther;
And gif the custoc’s sweet or sour.
Wi’ joctelegs they taste them;
Syne cozily, aboon the door,
Wi cannie care, they’ve placed them
To lie that night.
The lasses staw frae ‘mang them a’
To pou their stalks of corn:
But Rab slips out, and jinks about,
Behint the muckle thorn:
He grippet Nelly hard and fast;
Loud skirl’d a’ the lasses;
But her tap-pickle maist was lost,
When kitlin’ in the fause-house
Wi’ him that night.
The auld guidwife’s well-hoordit nits,
Are round and round divided,
And monie lads’ and lasses’ fates
Are there that night decided:
Some kindle coothie, side by side,
And burn thegither trimly;
Some start awa, wi’ saucy pride,
And jump out-owre the chimlie
Fu’ high that night.
Jean slips in twa wi’ tentie ee;
Wha ‘twas she wadna tell;
But this is Jock, and this is me,
She says in to hersel:
He bleezed owre her, and she owre him,
As they wad never mair part;
Till, fuff! he started up the lum,
And Jean had e’en a sair heart
To see’t that night.
Poor Willie, wi’ his bow-kail runt,
Was brunt wi’ primsie Mallie;
And Mallie, nae doubt, took the drunt,
To be compared to Willie;
Mall’s nit lap out wi’ pridefu’ fling,
And her ain fit it brunt it;
While Willie lap, and swore by jing,
‘Twas just the way he wanted
To be that night.
Nell had the fause-house in her min’,
She pits hersel and Rob in;
In loving bleeze they sweetly join,
Till white in ase they’re sobbin’;
Nell’s heart was dancin’ at the view,
She whisper’d Rob to leuk for’t:
Rob, stowlins, prie’d her bonny mou’,
Fu’ cozie in the neuk for’t,
Unseen that night.
But Merran sat behint their backs,
Her thoughts on Andrew Bell;
She lea’es them gashin’ at their cracks,
And slips out by hersel:
She through the yard the nearest taks,
And to the kiln goes then,
And darklins graipit for the bauks,
And in the blue-clue throws then,
Right fear’t that night.
And aye she win’t, and aye she swat,
I wat she made nae jaukin’,
Till something held within the pat,
Guid Lord! but she was quakin’!
But whether ‘was the deil himsel,
Or whether ‘twas a bauk-en’,
Or whether it was Andrew Bell,
She didna wait on talkin’
To spier that night.
Wee Jennie to her grannie says,
“Will ye go wi’ me, grannie?
I’ll eat the apple at the glass
I gat frae Uncle Johnnie:”
She fuff’t her pipe wi’ sic a lunt,
In wrath she was sae vap’rin’,
She notice’t na, an aizle brunt
Her braw new worset apron
Out through that night.
“Ye little skelpie-limmer’s face!
I daur you try sic sportin’,
As seek the foul thief ony place,
For him to spae your fortune.
Nae doubt but ye may get a sight!
Great cause ye hae to fear it;
For mony a ane has gotten a fright,
And lived and died deleeret
On sic a night.
“Ae hairst afore the Sherramoor, —
I mind’t as weel’s yestreen,
I was a gilpey then, I’m sure
I wasna past fifteen;
The simmer had been cauld and wat,
And stuff was unco green;
And aye a rantin’ kirn we gat,
And just on Halloween
It fell that night.
“Our stibble-rig was Rab M’Graen,
A clever sturdy fallow:
His son gat Eppie Sim wi’ wean,
That lived in Achmacalla:
He gat hemp-seed, I mind it weel,
And he made unco light o’t;
But mony a day was by himsel,
He was sae sairly frighted
That very night.”
Then up gat fechtin’ Jamie Fleck,
And he swore by his conscience,
That he could saw hemp-seed a peck;
For it was a’ but nonsense.
The auld guidman raught down the pock,
And out a hanfu’ gied him;
Syne bade him slip frae ‘mang the folk,
Some time when nae ane see’d him,
And try’t that night.
He marches through amang the stacks,
Though he was something sturtin;
The graip he for a harrow taks.
And haurls it at his curpin;
And every now and then he says,
“Hemp-seed, I saw thee,
And her that is to be my lass,
Come after me, and draw thee
As fast this night.”
He whistled up Lord Lennox’ march
To keep his courage cheery;
Although his hair began to arch,
He was say fley’d and eerie:
Till presently he hears a squeak,
And then a grane and gruntle;
He by his shouther gae a keek,
And tumbled wi’ a wintle
Out-owre that night.
He roar’d a horrid murder-shout,
In dreadfu’ desperation!
And young and auld came runnin’ out
To hear the sad narration;
He swore ‘twas hilchin Jean M’Craw,
Or crouchie Merran Humphie,
Till, stop! she trotted through them
And wha was it but grumphie
Asteer that night!
Meg fain wad to the barn hae gaen,
To win three wechts o’ naething;
But for to meet the deil her lane,
She pat but little faith in:
She gies the herd a pickle nits,
And two red-cheekit apples,
To watch, while for the barn she sets,
In hopes to see Tam Kipples
That very nicht.
She turns the key wi cannie thraw,
And owre the threshold ventures;
But first on Sawnie gies a ca’
Syne bauldly in she enters:
A ratton rattled up the wa’,
And she cried, Lord, preserve her!
And ran through midden-hole and a’,
And pray’d wi’ zeal and fervour,
Fu’ fast that night;
They hoy’t out Will wi’ sair advice;
They hecht him some fine braw ane;
It chanced the stack he faddom’d thrice
Was timmer-propt for thrawin’;
He taks a swirlie, auld moss-oak,
For some black grousome carlin;
And loot a winze, and drew a stroke,
Till skin in blypes cam haurlin’
Aff’s nieves that night.
A wanton widow Leezie was,
As canty as a kittlin;
But, och! that night amang the shaws,
She got a fearfu’ settlin’!
She through the whins, and by the cairn,
And owre the hill gaed scrievin,
Whare three lairds’ lands met at a burn
To dip her left sark-sleeve in,
Was bent that night.
Whyles owre a linn the burnie plays,
As through the glen it wimpl’t;
Whyles round a rocky scaur it strays;
Whyles in a wiel it dimpl’t;
Whyles glitter’d to the nightly rays,
Wi’ bickering, dancing dazzle;
Whyles cookit underneath the braes,
Below the spreading hazel,
Unseen that night.
Among the brackens, on the brae,
Between her and the moon,
The deil, or else an outler quey,
Gat up and gae a croon:
Poor Leezie’s heart maist lap the hool!
Near lav’rock-height she jumpit;
but mist a fit, and in the pool
Out-owre the lugs she plumpit,
Wi’ a plunge that night.
In order, on the clean hearth-stane,
The luggies three are ranged,
And every time great care is ta’en’,
To see them duly changed:
Auld Uncle John, wha wedlock joys
Sin’ Mar’s year did desire,
Because he gat the toom dish thrice,
He heaved them on the fire
In wrath that night.
Wi’ merry sangs, and friendly cracks,
I wat they didna weary;
And unco tales, and funny jokes,
Their sports were cheap and cheery;
Till butter’d so’ns, wi’ fragrant lunt,
Set a’ their gabs a-steerin’;
Syne, wi’ a social glass o’ strunt,
They parted aff careerin’
Fu’ blythe that night.

Magick, dreams, health, love, home and family In the word Monday, we can see
part of the word Moon. In the romance languages such as Italian or Spanish,
this day of the week is called Lunes and clearly relates to the word lunar.
On Mondays, a variety of magick may be worked.
Because Monday centers on the energies of the Moon, things like psychism,
dreams, feminine energy, health, success in spiritual pursuits, domestic
matters, and things of family origin are especially important this day.

Banish Icky Stuff
Spell Date: Sunday, October 30, 2016
The new moon is an ideal time to banish negative energies, people, and situations from your life. With Samhain just around the corner, this is the perfect opportunity to start the year fresh. Make an anointing oil using a carrier oil such as almond oil. Add to it the following oils:
2 drops black pepper oil
2 drops cypress oil
2 drops grapefruit oil
2 drops lime oil
2 drops rosemary oil
2 drops vetivert oil
2 drops yarrow oil (or a pinch of dried)
Shake the bottle of oil well to mix it thoroughly. Stand outside under the new moon, and anoint yourself with the oil. Gently rub it across your forehead, the pulse points on your neck and wrists, and your heart. Concentrate on pure white light washing through your body and cleansing you emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Chant:
Wash over me, inside and out.
Cleanse me, inside and out.
Purify me, inside and out.
Renew me, inside and out.

Blessing a Conical Hat
Spell Date: Saturday, October 29, 2016
Though stereotypical, the conical hat has become symbolic of the power and image of Witches. This hat, once a popular style, has been revived by some modern Witches as an emblem of pride. The brim is said to denote the magic circle, while the point symbolizes the cone of power—energy generated by Witches in ritual. A consecrated hat can be a source of protection and magic in the guise of a costume accessory.
To begin, obtain a suitable hat made of some type of fabric (as opposed to plastic) and set it on your altar. Place your hands on either side of the hat, sending white light from your hands into it while saying:
Circle of magic, cone of power,
Rising to a spiritual point;
Protection and blessing I hereby shower,
With magical purpose I do anoint.
Brimming with energy, the force
does surge,
My Witch’s hat is hereby charged.

Break a Curse Spell
Spell Date: Friday, October 28, 2016
This spell will help break a curse and send it back, even if you don’t know the source. You’ll need three candles: one red, one white, and one black. You’ll also need a stick or twig that you found on the ground.(Don’t break one off a tree.)
Bless the candles and light each one. Before the candles, lay the twig. Concentrate on the curse or problem. Don’t think about the person who may have cursed you—this isn’t a spell of revenge. When you feel you’ve raised enough energy and the time is right, extinguish each candle. Then break the twig in two. In a strong voice, say:
“Spirits red, spirits white, spirits black,
Break this curse and send it back!”
Throw the twig outside, and don’t use these candles for any other spells.

Heartwings says, “We won’t wonder where the time has gone if we have paid attention while it was passing.”
The other day Stephen and I were out with my daughter and her fiancé for dinner and a movie. As we sat over pizza afterward, I thought to myself how wonderful this all was, and how much I was enjoying it. I reminded myself to cherish the moment. We never know when something will end, or at least change so that it is no longer available. I did not always feel this way; it is something I have learned from experience.
When my children were little I was a busy mother. With five young ones to care for and a husband who traveled on sales calls I had a lot of responsibility. When I look back on our lives together I know there is much that I missed simply because my mind was too filled with what I needed to think about: meals to be planned and prepared, where the children need to be and when, what clothes needed to be provided, mended or washed, this list goes on and on, and it is familiar to any parent.
Looking back on all the changes I have moved through in my life, I realize how much I may have missed by not being present. A friend once said to me, “I always take special care to enjoy myself at your home because then when things change I will have no regrets.” We moved away and she went back to South America; we have lost touch. Most likely I will not see her ever again, yet because of what she said she has a presence still in my heart. Occasionally I do see again someone that came to our home for gatherings or classes a number of years ago and remembers us, and it makes me glad.
Recently I have lost a sister and a sister in law to death as well as a number of friends and acquaintances. At no time did I know when last I was with that person that I would not set eyes on her or him ever again. I am aware more than ever that when I am with someone I know, and especially someone I love that it is vital to be mindfully present, or I will miss out and regret that I did not take advantage of the time I had with them. Change is the law of life; nothing stays the same. Every moment is precious, most especially when we are with those we love.
May you enjoy every moment tht you have with those you love and care for.

Harvest Pumpkin Butter

1 cup cooked or canned pumpkin
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup molasses
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
In a small saucepan, combine all ingredients; mix well. Bring to a boil,
stirring frequently. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes, or
until thickened. Refrigerate at least 1 hour.
Makes 1 1/4 cups.

Magee Goes Trick or Treat
Chapter 4
Dick Pride bounded into his editor’s, Charley Smiles office. “Got the photo, Sir. The police want us to run it as a missing person but I sense there’s something more than that going on.”
Charley Smiles grinned at his young reporter. He placed the print on a thick white pad, turned on the electric magnifier and moved it over the photo.
He studied it, then looked at Dick. “What do you see?”
“I don’t think she had a clue she was going to die. Look at her eyes. They seem dazed.”
Charley nodded. “They do don’t they.”
“Like maybe she was drugged. No one looks quite that serene when they’re at death’s door.”
Charley nodded. “Look at the base of her skull. Doesn’t it seem detached from the rest of her? And there’s no body showing.”
Dick’s eyes lit up. “Maybe she was decapitated. Murdered by someone in a crazed cult.”
Charley put his hand on his chin and looked at Dick. “I wouldn’t go suggesting anything quite like that to Tom Mallory unless you’ve got a smoking pistol and can prove what you’re saying beyond any reasonable doubt. Believe me, I know Tom. He’s a good friend of mine. He doesn’t think like you do. So you’d better be able to back up fanciful conjecturing with hard evidence.”
“But Sir, don’t you think that her turning up now right before Halloween might not have….”
“Of course it could,” Charley said. “But you’ve got to prove it, nail it down, provide that smoking pistol.”
“Yes sir. Thank you.”
Charley ran his hand through his thick white hair, took off his glasses, cleaned them with a soft cloth, and set them down on his desk. He looked at Dick with a serious expression. “And stay out of Tom Mallory’s hair. Don’t even go to the station while you’re investigating. Dig it up yourself and keep me informed.”
“I’m not quite sure where to begin?
“Take that picture and show it all over town. Schools, restaurants, churches, the library, anyplace people may gather.”
He nodded.
“Again not a word. Break this story on your own. Shoot for The New York Times or The Washington Post. Then you can move on to fame and fortune, write your own ticket. But in the meantime don’t be late filing the obits, proofing the paste ups, answering letters to the editor, and attending to your other weekly tasks.”
Dick Pride gulped. “Thank you sir. I won’t let you down.”
Charley smiled. “What else did you pick up?”
“I met detective Sippi Bopp. She invited me to her aunt’s party at the Inn this Saturday night.”
Charley grinned. “You’re going to meet Bea Bopp? We’ll both be there.”
“More than meet her I hope. I was thinking maybe I could do a series of interviews, and maybe she’d like me to write her tell-all biography. Not much about her in print.”
Charley chuckled. “I take it you haven’t met her yet?”
“No, but I will Saturday night.”
“I wouldn’t push her about a book right off,” he said. “I wouldn’t want her to think that you’re being opportunistic. Give it time to simmer.”
Dick wrinkled his forehead. “You think that’s wise, to wait that way?
“Yes,” he said wondering if an op ed on youth and impatience would spark any readership response.
Aunt Bea was in the guest bedroom soaking her feet when Sippi came in. “Everything all right?” Sippi looked around to see if anything needed doing.
“I’m so glad you’re here.”
“That’s only because I’ve left my mother hen spectacles in New York.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well if I were noisy which I’m not, I’d ask what’s going on between you and Jones. Every time he acts nice you bite his head off. “
Sippi sighed. “Yes, I guess I do.” She shook her head. Memories flooded her mind, many of which she wished she could forget. “Me and Raven have history that started back on the coast during rehab. I thought we were pretty inseparable and I started entertaining thoughts that he was really the one for me forever.”
Aunt Bea chuckled. “That’s usually when everything goes up in smoke.”
“It sure did,” Sippi shook her head. “We were talking about moving in together, buying a condo and sharing expenses, though at the time both of us were independently wealthy.”
“How soon until he started looking around and flew the coop?”
“A few weeks–Raven always moves fast on or off the court. He’s got one of those minds that can keep three or four scenarios bouncing around in his head. We were going to a New Year’s Eve bash put on by some of his NBA buddies. On our way over he told me to keep the car that he wouldn’t be needing it later on. Dumb me thought he was going to drink in the new years with his teammates but an hour after we got there he vanished.”
“Just like that,” Aunt Bea said. “No prior warning?”
Sippi nodded. Just like that.”
“Poor dear. As long as you know he’s not much different than most other immature men. Taking that step toward commitment is more than most can manage.”
“Yes,” Sippi nodded. “Raven’s immature. I knew that from the outset.”
“Not so much immature,” Aunt Bea said. “That boy will try to hold onto his youth till his hair starts falling out. Nothing any woman can do to wake him up either. He has to wake up himself.”
“What about me?” She said in a small voice.”
“Sippi you’ve hoed your own row since you were born. You’ve come into this lifetime with more awareness and wisdom than you know you have. And that can make for difficulties especially when you want to let your heart run away.”
“I learned my lesson,” Sippi sounded determined.
Bea shook her head. “I hope not. I hope you fall in love so many more times that you can’t think straight. Then when you’re really ready to throw in the towel he’ll come along and you’ll both know it. But trust Sippi. Trust the Gods of Love to look kindly upon you. Meanwhile it’s perfectly all right to see Raven Jones as Mr. Right Now. He likes walking Magee so let him. And you don’t even have to lead him on. That he’ll do on his own.”
Sippi smiled. “Somehow that doesn’t feel absolutely honest.”
Bea raised her eyebrows. “Why should it? But I don’t want to start discussing my twisting and turnings with men. We can save that conversation for another time.”
Sippi smiled. “Thanks Aunt Bea. “What you said makes me feel better, gives me hope.”
“Good thing,” Bea stood and hugged her. “You look so like your mother. She was dedicated just like you Sippi. That’s why she took her nursing skills to war. Your mother was determined to serve. And it cost her her life.”
“”And you think I look like my mom?”
‘The phone rang. It was Chief Mallory. Sippi we’ve got a problem. Grab Magee and get over here to the Inn. A kitchen worker wents to empty trash in the incinerator and discovered the headless corpse of a woman.”

Protection Mojo Bag
The Crystal Witch ~ A Year and A Day of Spells for Empowering Life)
A mojo bag is an amulet consisting of a drawstring bag containing one or more magical items. It is a “prayer in a bag”, or a “positive affirmation” that can be carried with you for intentional purposes.
1 Carnelian (an agate stone)
1 Onyx
1 Obsidian
1 Agate Eye or Black Banded Agate
Frankincense, Clove oils
Sandalwood, Rosemary herbs
This was my grandmother’s favorite protection mojo bag. The main ingredient is the Carnelian Agate (a fiery red stone) that is complimented by 3 other stones, herbs and oil.
Place your stone on your altar, copper grid plate or sacred space.
Anoint each stone first with, frankincense oil and then each stone with clove oil.
Smudge the sandalwood and rosemary herbs on each crystal.
“I dress each stone to help protect,
With oils, herbs and great respect.
To keep aware and in good hands,
Safe and sound, as I command.”
My grandmother would add all the stones, remaining herbs and a few addition drops of each oil into the bag and carry them with her, constantly.

Take it if you get an opportunity to advance your education. Having impressive qualifications will boost your career prospects. Be direct with someone who tries to intimidate you. You aren`t afraid to speak truth to power. If you`re dismissed from a job, another one will come along.
Sunday`s New Moon is in your sign and coincides neatly with Hallowe`en. It might suit you to experience a few dark, passionate and perhaps even a little mysterious moments. True, it may be that you also need to consider carefully cash flow management. Epigram: The planetary setup is all about dealing with everything from obstacles to tricky situations slowly, and possibly through others. While, obviously, this approach is out of character, it`s necessitated by various complications that really aren`t your problem. Do what you can, then back off and delegate the rest. This, in turn, frees you to focus on the far-reaching pursuits that will unfold over the coming four weeks.
Outline: No matter how much you deserve a bonus, the start of the week is not the time to be dropping hints. You`re better off making sure you don`t drop your coffee. You`ll be doing forty million things at once. The fast-forward blur of Monday and Tuesday slows down to a normal pace on Wednesday and Thursday — you may even have enough time to be social midweek (what a luxury!) — and by Friday you`re in bona fide slow-mo. This gives you plenty of time to ponder your future. The weekend, especially Sunday, is ideal for goal setting.
You`re tired of worrying about money and status. Solitary pursuits like prayer, reading and writing can bring peace of mind. While you`ll need to learn more before you commit, it`s been a long time since you`ve felt as enthusiastic about anything.
Outline: A simple fact — small, beautiful, true — means the world to you on Monday. It solves a puzzle you`ve been working on for weeks in your mind. It may put you in the mood to conduct still more research, place some calls, advance to the next step in a project. Or maybe you`re ready for a new project: Wednesday is a great day to start something and Thursday you have energy to spare. Your detachment from emotional matters on Friday puts you in the ideal frame of mind to make a big decision, and Saturday and Sunday find you racing with full speed toward accomplishing a major goal.

It`s unclear what the future holds and, especially, what your financial outlook is — so be careful in business deals. Wednesday and Thursday are less about business and more about buddies (you might meet someone new, or connect with a pal in a way you never have before), but Friday once again finds you focused on career matters. If anybody asks you to justify your decisions, smile but say nothing. Instead allow your plans, and the results they achieve, to testify how wise they were.
Outline: Your intuition won`t let you down at the start of the week. Feel free to make a decision before you have all the facts you think you need. If necessary, you can always alter course as new information arrives. The new information that arrives on Wednesday and Thursday may strangely enough come in the form of dissension from someone you usually agree with. Give them the benefit of the doubt, but if you suspect they`re walking all over you — as might be the case on Friday or Saturday — well, you are too wonderful for that. Take a stand and you`ll be rewarded on Sunday.
