In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

In ancient Rome, an agricultural festival called the Feriae Sementiva (Feast of Spring) was celebrated annually on this date with sacrifices to Ceres (the Goddess of Agriculture) and Tellus Mater (the goddess of the Earth and fertility), as well as other lesser Gods and Goddesses associated with agriculture.

On this date in the year 1940, Z. Budapest (the founder and leader of the main branch of feminist Dianic Wicca) was born in Budapest. Among her many accomplishments, she founded the Susan B. Anthony coven (named after the famous suffragist), hosted a radio show in San Francisco, directed the Women’s Spirituality Forum in Oakland, and led a successful public hexing against a mass murderer.

NOTE: Because of the large number of ancient calendars, many in simultaneous use, as well as different ways of computing holy days (marked by the annual inundation, the solar year, the lunar month, the rising of key stars, and other celestial and terrestrial events), you may find these holy days celebrated a few days earlier or later at your local temple.

Goddess Of The Day: Pax
Festival of Pax (Rome)

Theme: Peace
Symbols: White Items; Corn; Cornucopia; Olive Branch

About Pax: Pax is the Roman goddess of peace; she urges us to keep harmony among one another as a sacred commodity throughout the year. On coins, Pax appears youthful and often bears an olive branch to extend the hand of truce or a cornucopia, indicating that there is an abundance of peace for those who truly seek it.

To Do Today: Remember Pax by wearing or carrying something whole today and offering to make amends with someone with whom you’ve had an argument.

Alternatively, make a funnel from a piece of white paper (like a cornucopia). Leave this somewhere predominate. Each time you have an angry or discordant thought, toss a coin into the funnel. At the end of the day donate these coins (plus a few dollars) to a charity that promotes peace.

Roman custom dictated that the images of all leaders were to be placed at Pax’s feet on this day, as to invoke her amicable energy to their interactions. This isn’t a bad idea for modern leaders, either! Take any pictures you have of world leaders (check newspapers and magazines). If you can’t find pictures, write their names on white paper instead. Put these in a pile before a white candle. As you light the candle, say:

Pax, let peace fill their hearts.
Let all hatred depart.
Peace be between me and thee, and all those I meet.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ Breaking Writer’s Block Spell

Today is the feast day of St. Francis de Sales, patron saint of writers and journalists. On this day, you may do a spell to surmount any creative blocks. To start, hold your arms out to your sides, and turn you head to face your right thumb (if you are right-handed; face your left thumb if you are left handed).

Say out loud:

I cannot write any more.

Then turn your head to the opposite thumb and say:

I can write anything at any time.

Repeat for both thumbs two more times. With your eyes open and looking forward, see both of your thumbs in your peripheral vision. Take a deep breath. While exhaling, quickly bring your arms in front of you and cross them. You might feel slightly disoriented for a few seconds, but new writing ideas will emerge.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ February 2; Celebrating Candlemas

One of the great cross-quarter days which make up the wheel of the year. It falls midway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox and in many traditions is considered the beginning of spring.

Awakening the Ground
In Western Europe, this was the time for preparing the fields for the first planting. Even in Seattle, you can begin turning over and enriching the soil in anticipation of the first sowing in March. Pamela Berger has written a book, The Goddess Obscured: Transformation of the Grain Protectress from Goddess to Saint, about the rituals celebrated at this time of year, when the ground is first awakened and the seed placed in the belly of the earth. This is a significant moment in a community which depends on the earth for sustenance. The fields were purified and offerings were made to the Goddess.

This medieval Anglo-Saxon plowing charm, recorded by Berger, was said by the farmer while cutting the first furrow.

Whole be thou Earth
Mother of men.
In the lap of God,
Be thou as-growing.
Be filled with fodder
For fare-need of men.

The farmer then took a loaf of bread, kneaded it with milk and holy water and laid it under the first furrow, saying:

Acre full fed,
Bring forth fodder for men!
Blossoming brightly,
Blessed become;
And the God who wrought the ground,
Grant us the gifts of growing,
That the corn, all the corn,
may come unto our need.

The promises of the return of the light and the renewal of life which were made at the winter solstice are now becoming manifest. It’s the dawn of the year. It’s the time when a woman who is pregnant begins showing. It’s time to creep out of the hibernation of winter, cautiously, like the Ground Hog who supposedly emerges on this day to check his shadow. It’s the time of germination. This is a traditional time for new beginnings. Covens of Witches usually initiate new members at this time.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ Waking Earth Cake

Celebrate the first stirrings of spring with this unusual not-too-sweet cake, a tasty way to begin fortifying ourselves for the new season ahead. It is sweetened with iron-rich molasses instead of sugar, and it uses no dairy or eggs. In fact, you will be surprised at how anything with so few ingredients could taste so good! This adaptation of a simple recipe by Peaceful Cook Harriet Kofalk is a nourishing tonic for the last cold days (we hope!) of late winter.

The recipe includes a magical surprise idea to celebrate the seeds that are beginning to stir deep underground. You may want to top it with vanilla ice cream, a beautiful way to represent the snow covering this waking earth. Think of the cake hiding its surprise gifts just as the Earth gestates the waking seeds.

Simple Solution:

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup unbleached white flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup unsulphured molasses
1/2 cup hot water
1/4 cup blackstrap molasses
optional: small non-meltable surprises for hiding inside cake (a clean coin, a polished crystal, a ring, a gold or silver charm)
optional: yogurt, ice cream or non-dairy frozen dessert

1. Preheat oven to 375.
2. In a large bowl, combine both flours and baking soda. Stir in the vegetable oil and the unsulphured molasses. This mixture will resemble crumb topping. Remove 1 cup of it and reserve.
3. In a small bowl, combine the hot water and the blackstrap molasses. Add to the flour mixture remaining in the large bowl and mix well.
4. Now is the time, if you desire, to stir in any one or more of the non-melting surprises. Finding one of them in your piece of cake is good luck – but BE SURE to warn your eating audience to prevent accidental choking or broken teeth!
5. Pour batter into a greased 9-inch square baking pan, sprinkle with the reserved crumb topping, and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
6. Serve warm, with a dollop of yogurt or vanilla ice cream, if you like.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ Moon Lore

The number of days old the moon is at the first snow tells how many snows there will be that winter.
A circle around the moon means rain. The closer the circle is to the moon the sooner it will come.
If the winter new moon rises far in the south, it will be unusually warm.
If there is a cloudy morning during the waning moon, there will be a sunny afternoon.
If it starts raining on the day the moon is becomes full, it will rain until it quarters.
If there is a ring around the moon, count the number of stars in the ring and it will rain in that many days.
If there changes in the moon’s appearance occurring on Sunday, it means heavy rains and flooding.
It will rain with in three days if the horns of the moon point down.
If the moon is resting on its back at the start of the forth quarter, it will be a rainy week.
If the moon is red when it rises, expect rain the next day.
A clear yellow moon rising in a cloudless sky means fine weather to come.
A clear moon in the winter, means frost is on the way.
Several circles around the moon means several days (or long periods) of rain.
A circle around the moon means rain is coming soon.
The closer the circle is to the moon, the worse the weather will be.
An opening in the circle indicates what way the wind will blow.
A circle around the moon twill rain.
If the moon shows a silver shield, be not afraid to reap the field, but if she rises hallowed round, soon well tread on deluged ground.
If the winter new moon rises far in the north, it will be a cold month.
To smell wild thyme will renew spirits and energy in long walks through the August Sun. ~unknown author

In England, the Barn Owl was used to predict the weather. A screeching owl meant cold weather or a storm was coming. If it screeched during bad weather,
the weather was going to change.

Another English belief was that if you walked around an owl in a tree several times, it would keep turning its head to watch you until it wrung its neck.

At eve last midsummer no sleep I sought,
But to the field a bag of hemp-seed brought;
I scatter’d round the seed on every side,
And three times in a trembling accent cried, —
“This hemp-seed with my virgin hands I sow,
Who shall my true love be, the crop shall mow.”
I straight look’d back, and, if my eyes speak truth,
With his keen scythe behind me came the youth.

If a young woman goes into the barn at midnight on Hallowe’en and turns the corn riddles (sieves) round,
three times, she will see her future husband when she comes out.

Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle …
a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl.
And the anticipation nurtures our dream. -Barbara Winkler

In October dung your field and your land its wealth shall yield.

Who doffs his coat on a winters day, will gladly put it on in May.

She is the one who made the world.
She was the Moon when she did that.

She is the one who sustains the world.
She is the sun and she does that.

She is the one who gives happiness.

It is not always easy to live with knowledge of the Goddess. She is the mother of the world, creator of all that we see and hear and experience. But she is also mother of death and destruction, the force that will finally end creation as we know it. She is our life, and our life’s ending.

Winter is a time to remember the importance of cycles in our lives. During summer’s glory, it is easy to forget that the Goddess is not all growth and flourishing. But when all seems frozen and dead, we are confronted with the other side of her nature. To love the goddess truly means to accept this side of her as well. The still air of winter, silent birds and the rustling of trees, has its own stark beauty. But even when she is not beautiful, this winter Goddess holds the deepest truths of our existence.
