September gets its name from the Latin word, septum, meaning “seven”, because it was originally
the seventh month in the old calendar system. While the early portion of this month has many
summer-feeling festivals, slowly we see a change in focus toward the fall and harvest celebrations.
Children return to school, outdoor activities start to wane, and the Wheel of Time begins to paint
the trees with color.
The traditional birthstone of amulet of September is the blue sapphire; and the aster and the
morning glory are the month’s traditional flowers. September is shared by the astrological
signs of Virgo the Virgin and Libra the Scales (or Balance), and is sacred to the following
Pagan deities: Persephone, Thor, and the Wiccan Goddess in Her aspect of the Mother.
During the month of September, the Great Solar Wheel of the Year is turned to the Autumnal
Equinox, one of the four Lesser Sabbats celebrated each year by Wiccans and modern
Witches throughout the world.
September’s energy augments magic for prosperity and abundance, balanced with sensibility
and a little frugality. It is especially a time for rituals that thank the Goddess for all her gifts
throughout the year. Beyond this, start making amulets for health so that when the cooler winds come,
you’ll be magically fortified.

About Ichar-tsirew: In Ghana, this Water Goddess flows into people’s lives, saturating them with
peaceful intentions and tranquility, especially in the home. She revels in good organization and any
matters carried out in an orderly fashion.
To Do Today: Among the people of the Gold Coast, this festival is a time to honor their bonds
as a nation and revel in the laws, beliefs, and customs established in the early 1600’s (many of which
are probably far older). One neat custom for that can invoke Ichar-tsirew’s organized attributes is that
of burying a bundle of branches. This puts away any unnecessary negativity and banishes bad habits
that somehow disrupt the orderly flow of your life.
When you find that the people in your living space have reached critical mass and you need to call
a truce, Ichar-tsirew’s waters can help. Go through the house (or building, if the “war zone” is your office)
before talking to anyone, and sprinkle her peace in every nook possible (just a little is fine). As you go,
repeat this incantation:
“Negativity cease; by peace released!”
Continue until the whole area is done. Now try re-approaching the people with whom tensions have been building,
and let the Goddess harness harmony.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies – Family Prosperity Spell
On this day which honors workers, do this spell so that members of your immediate and extended family will feel secure in their jobs, or will find a job if they need one. To start, light a green candle, and anoint it with Money, Prosperity, or Success oil. Write on a piece of paper with green ink the names of each family member who wants to work. Fold the paper into a small square, and anoint the paper. Sprinkle some green herbs-basil, parsley, thyme, and so on-around the candle. Place the petition and some of the herbs in a small, green-felt bag. Ask the universe for financial security, and carry the charm with you. After Labor Day, give the charm to the person in the family who most needs job security. As his or her financial lot improves, so will the rest of the family’s.
Holiday Lore:
Many Greeks consider this their New Year’s Day, based on the agricultural traditions of the region. This day marks the beginning of the sowing season, a time of promise and hope. People fashion wreaths of pomegranates, grapes, quinces, and garlic bulbs-all traditional symbols of abundance-on this day. Just before dawn on September 1, children submerge the wreaths in the ocean waters for luck. They carry seawater and pebbles home with them in small jars to serve as protection in the coming year. Tradition calls for exactly forty pebbles and water from exactly forty waves.

Although fall approaches, it is not quite here yet. This is the time of harvest, the season of fullness and plenty.
For our forebears, this was a time of both celebration and intense industry. It was a time of omen-seeking
for the future and of thanksgiving for many of the gifts of the past.
It is important, as harvest nears, to recognize what is ripe and what is yet unripe, what calls to be taken
and what must now be left to grow. There is no sense in plucking what needs to be left on the vine,
for such fruits are sour and hard and unnourishing. But it is also wasteful to pass over what needs
to be plucked, for when something is truly ripe, more time leads not to further growth, but to rot and loss.
In our lives, every day brings us ideas, creative works, and relationships that are ripe, ready to be brought
forth and celebrated. The harvest of human life and human love is constant, not restricted to a single season.
There are other works and loves that need time to grow and develop. Left undisturbed, they will eventually
bear fruit to nourish and sustain us. Wisdom lies in recognizing our inner seasons.
