Light A Candle Today!
In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

The Devil Reversed.
You’re on the verge of a break-through or an up-leveling! You are being called to your highest potential, but first, you must let go of any unhealthy attachments or limiting beliefs that may hold you back.
Often, when you are called to something ‘more’, you must deal with your shadows before you can step into this new version of yourself.
Let go of fear and release any self-imposed limiting beliefs standing in the way of your growth. It is easier than you realize.
Heartwings Love Notes 919 Do What You Love, Love What You Do
Heartwings says, “If you do not love what you do, love why you are doing it.”
Many people working are stuck in jobs they do not like, yet they have to be in them for a good reason. This could vary from needing health care to supporting a family, to paying off a college loan-endless reasons. They come home exhausted and frustrated, and they may develop a variety of physical effects. These could be acid reflux, arthritis or any other health issue essentially caused by stress, depleting the immune system. Then because they don’t know that, they try to kill the messenger with remedies. Their bodies, unable to communicate, shout louder and louder until either they do something to really resolve the stress, or if they’re lucky, retire.
Stress can mean a person gets a disease, or some form of discomfort. He or she might resort to alcohol or becomes addicted to some kind of drug. The ones who cope without becoming ill are those who manage to find something to love in their situation. A person who feels valuable can be relatively stress free no matter how difficult their job may be. Once I was stuck home with five children to care for and a husband often away on business trips., I learned to take advantage of my time alone. My days, though stressful, did not make me ill.
I learned skills and made good use of my time. I read books that enlightened me, created embroidered gifts for friends and family, and made dozens of cookies. I took pleasure in learning the guitar and singing, attending hoot-n-nannies (the original of open mikes), and enjoying the antics of my children. I loved what I did because I made up my mind to. The secret to saving yourself from drowning is to learn to swim. Of course, metaphorically speaking, it helps if you take swimming lessons as a child. I did have some good training in learning early on to cope with life’s stresses.
Not everyone has the self-control to redirect their thoughts and feelings, or to find the enjoyment they need to balance the negativity they endure by seeking out ways to be happy. It is also important to acknowledge one’s stress level and not to deceive oneself into thinking nothing is wrong when it is. To be healthy is a goal not everyone can reach. Yet, lacking the ability to change circumstances, a person can look for and discover ways to love what they do, even if they are not able to do what they love to get paid. What it takes is an effort of will to address what is gained by their situation, and let go of their hold on their negative feelings about it. Letting go of the pain can raise the curtain on the benefits and blessings to be noticed.
May you find ways to increase your joy in what you do, so you will learn to love it.
Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

Simple Witchery: Simple Offerings—What You Bring to the Altar
by Willow Rose
I often see questions from new witches about what to offer to their deities, guides, and other spirits they work with. My answer to them is that simple gifts well given will be well received.
If you work with a deity, or deities, currying their favor is no guarantee of living a charmed life, but it can strengthen your relationship and open the channel of communication.
I have been working quite a bit with Hekate in the last year. With a bit of research, I’ve been able to readily find gifts that please Her, including food items such as garlic, leek, saffron, almonds, honey, pomegranate and chocolate.
Simple gifts well given will be well received. Image by Andy JARRIGE from Pixabay.
She also accepts plant offerings of dandelions, roses and the poisons—like foxglove, datura, mandrake, and nightshade, sedatives like poppy, and hallucinogens like wormword, or the milder mugwort. Many minerals, gemstones, blood, bones, and animal remains also please Her.
Bekah Evie Bel shares a comprehensive list of offerings to Hekate, in #10 of her 30 Days of Hekate.
The Slavic Goddess, Mokosh, is a goddess of my ancestry that I would like to know better. She is an Earth Goddess, a protector of women and mothers. My research indicates I might connect with her through offerings of mead, porridge, cottage cheese, and spun wool.
I can make a guess, from the heavy-laden tables of holiday feasts when I was a child, that the porridge might be a form a polenta, the cottage cheese could be mixed with eggs and sugar and laden between layers of a phyllo-like dough, or it might just as easily be buttermilk. And not only the wool of the sheep, but the roasted lamb would likely be appreciated. If not mead, honey and fruit will suffice.
In the case of lesser-known deities and spirits, a little detective work and imagination can bring the answers you seek. Ask yourself what traditional foods were eaten, customs practiced, and regional plants grown in the time and locale of the deity. Also what group of mortals did the deity protect? What activities were associated?
What are the traditional foods, customs and plants of your chosen deity? Photo by Luz Mendoza on Unsplash.
The Goddess Ixchel came to me in an intuitive painting and I have since been learning about her. A Mayan goddess of midwifery and medicine, she is a protector of women and mothers. Her legend tells of her sons that were half Jaguar, and that she herself could shape-shift into a black jaguar to go unseen in the night.
I have not found much in the way of appropriate offerings to Ixchel, but good clues abound in her story. Cultural considerations would point to peppers, spices, cocoa, coffee, and sweet potato and morning glory (both members of the ipomoea plant species).
As a goddess of pharmekia, especially ministering to women and mothers, the sacred herbs and plants used in reproductive health would be appropriate, I’m sure. I could spend hours researching native plants and herbs in Central America, but I personally believe that it’s not necessary. Deities transcend time, location and space. Black cohosh, ginseng, cranberry, rue, maca, red clover and fenugreek will likely be well received, regardless of where they grow naturally.
As for her shape-shifting into a Jaguar, raw meat, animal remains, and blood would serve well as gifts. I also fancy that she may like opals, as her skin was described to have an opalescent quality, rainbow tourmaline, since she associated with rainbows, and any gem or stone related to water.
Some cultural spiritual traditions may still call for live sacrifice, but most modern-day pagans do not engage in harming or killing living creatures; there are many humane ways to work around it.
The least offensive way to offer animal energy is through naturally shed fur, feathers, skins, and scales. Save the hair and nail clippings from grooming your pets, look for feathers and skin sheds when you’re walking outdoors.
I save the blood from the meat I eat—there’s always enough to be had when I thaw hamburger or steaks. Setting aside a bit of the raw meat is also an option. Or save the fat and bones to use as your offerings.
If you have to pick up your pet’s feces, you may as well make use of it. That, or wild animal scat, might seem a little disgusting but so are sacrifices of blood and guts—the deities who accept those are probably okay with products of elimination too—accompanying spell-work might be releasing, banishing or warding in nature, as in get rid of that s———!
I can’t leave this subject of animal offerings without mentioning the harvesting of road kill as a source. However, far from being simple witchery, processing a dead animal takes advanced knowledge and skill. Even if all you plan is to throw it to the flames, research the best ways to collect the remains and know all the risks. Protect yourself from possible parasites like lice, and ticks that carry diseases such as lyme and ehrlichiosis. Also, be aware of any restrictions regarding protected animals that could result in fines. Be sure to bless the animal’s spirit on its journey to the next realm.
Using What’s Practical and Available
For witches living in rural areas, or suburban neighborhoods with green space, the wide outdoors is your supermarket. Just be sure to forage and harvest responsibly, asking for permission when not on your own land, never taking more than you need or over-harvesting to the point of endangering the plant’s survival. Always leave something in exchange.
I like to leave birdseed where appropriate, but you don’t always have to leave something. Whenever I walk through the county forest park near my home, I bring a bag along to pick up trash in respect of Earth Spirit, and as an exchange of energy.
For Urban witches, the supermarket is your hunting grounds. Image by JaHo from Pixabay.
If you tend your own gardens, weeding, watering and fertilizing with organic matter is a fair exchange. And of course, don’t forget prayers to ask permission, and as thanks, for what is given.
For Urban witches surrounded by pavement and high rises, the supermarket is your hunting ground. Stalk the spice, produce, meat and dairy isles. Don’t forget eggs, coffee, cocoa and chocolate, honey, maple syrup, and nuts and seeds, like almond, sunflower and flax—as oils too, along with olive, grape seed, sesame, coconut and corn oils. Tomatoes, potatoes and bell peppers are nightshades, corn is sacred to many cultures, and grains like wheat and rye, can be had in crackers and cereals.
The Act of Offering
If you take away only one thing from reading this, please remember that offerings do not have to be given in large amounts. A tiny bit is enough and doesn’t abuse resources, nor leave behind unnecessary refuse once the energy has been transformed and accepted.
Be sure to research the particular deities you wish to appeal to. For example, food offerings to Hekate are best left at a three-way crossroad, on a dark moon night.
Leave offerings for Hekate at crossroads on a dark moon night.
If you can’t find any guiding information, use what you know about the deity, and the offering. Also, try asking for guidance from the God, Goddess, or Spirit you are appealing to.
To again use Hekate as an example, I might feed an offering of meat to your dog (honoring her hounds). Or for Ixchel, associated with water, I might brew some strong coffee in spring water and then pour onto the ground.
Burning, burying, or flushing are all ways to transform offerings into a form that deities and spirits can receive.
These are the preferred methods if you offer food, plants, bones, or anything that might be harmful if consumed by animals or humans.
If disposing outdoors is not possible, consider flushing (remember, small amounts and don’t flush anything that might clog plumbing). Don’t flush pharmaceuticals, poisoners’ plants, or harmful chemicals that will find their way into the ground water.
If there is a specific call to bury an offering, houseplants work for urban witches, as well as those of us who live on frozen ground in winter months. For gardeners, consider composting your suitable offerings.
If working with elemental spirits, align your method with the element, bury offerings to Earth, let the wind carry away offerings to Air, burn offerings to Fire, and dissolve offerings to Water.
Of course, be mindful of these methods, don’t bury toxins that harm the earth. Don’t pollute air or waterways, and don’t introduce anything that will cause algae bloom in waterways or otherwise disrupt the ecosystem.
Refrain from littering by tossing offerings to the air. Instead, your Air offerings are probably best left to smoke, steam, scent, or sound. Yes—speaking, chanting, singing, laughing, clapping, drumming (or playing any instrument) can be an offering!
Always practice safe burning in covered containers, and don’t burn outdoors during times of high fire danger. Don’t burn anything that releases toxins to the air, or the earth when ashes are reclaimed.
Remember that it’s not what you offer, how much you offer, or which method you use to offer it mindfully and safely, but rather the intent behind the gift. A small pinch of herbs carries your intent just as efficiently as a handful. Offer the best you have to give, with heartfelt devotion or sincere plea, and it will be received.
The Simplest Offering
There are two ways I like to offer gifts that I believe are often overlooked, and which alleviate many of the concerns of what might be left behind.
The first is really a no-brainer—acts of service. Donate to food shelves and charity organizations, volunteer at a food bank distribution, or give your time and skills to a worthy, non-profit organization. These can all be done as offerings to your chosen deities, spirits and guides.
“Ask Hecate whether it is better to be rich or starving; she will tell you that the rich send her a meal every month and that the poor make it disappear before it is even served.” ~ In Plutus by Aristophenes
The second method of simple offering was revealed to me during ritual. I’d lit a fire in the ring at my outdoor shrine, cast my circle, and sat down for an informal chat with whoever might join me in spirit. I’d placed some standard offerings on the altar stone—wine, cakes (probably cookies of some sort), chocolate and a few almonds. I’d brought a cup of rich, dark coffee for myself.
I was soon engaged in conversation with Hekate. I paused to take a sip of my coffee and I heard (I don’t actually hear with my ears, I’m claircognizant so the thoughts or words come fully formed into my head), “I’d like some of that.”
I was a bit taken aback, but I thought, why not? I took a mindful sip of the coffee, appreciating the flavor, the temperature, the feel of it on my tongue and the warming sensation down my throat as I swallowed.
“So good,” she said. “And the chocolate?”
I took a bite of the dark chocolate nugget, feeling the texture on my tongue, savoring the balance of bitter and sweet.
Coffee and chocolates for a goddess?
Why hadn’t I thought of it before? Why wouldn’t the deities and spirits want to experience through our mortal senses, that which they have no body, no physical means, to enjoy?
However you choose to make offerings, find a simple but meaningful method that works for you, do it with heartfelt intent, and rest assured that it will be received.
Sacred Smoke for Purifying Your Home
by Guest Contributor
Close your eyes. Go on, just for a moment. Picture your home from the outside, just as though you were standing out front. Imagine it in as much detail as you possibly can.
As you work with this book, this skill of visualization is going to become more and more essential, and the more you practice it, the better you’ll get at it and the better you’ll be prepared for the heavier lifting at the end of the book. This is a book for beginners, but you won’t be by the time you’re finished reading it, right?
So, picture your home, no matter what the building looks like from the outside—apartment complex, house, converted factory space: it doesn’t matter. Picture it at dawn. See the sunrise. Speed up the camera so that an entire day passes in a few seconds. Visualize the path of the sunlight over your home, and know where every spot of shade falls, down to where animals are likely to nest. Get to know the exterior of the building the way you know your hands. By being able to reach into your brain and build your home in your mind’s eye, to be able to pick it up the way you would your phone, turn it over in your hands, and examine it, you can check it for flaws, cracks, or holes in the defenses of your home—once you set them up, that is.
We spend a lot of time running back and forth to work, school, the grocery store, and so many other places in our lives that we don’t often remember to stop to look at the buildings where we spend a good portion of our time. Could you pick yours out of a line-up? Could you describe it to a sketch artist if it went missing? But you are saying, “It’s a whole building, it isn’t going anywhere.” This is how we ensure that remains the case. We are going to keep our homes safe and secure when we aren’t there to protect them.
When you have the spare brain power—and it is safe to do so—picture the exterior of your home. Do this whenever you are working on small tasks that don’t require 100 percent of your attention. Practice makes perfect, and you need the psychic equivalent of muscle memory. Once you have gotten the hang of seeing what it looks like in your mind’s eye, I want you to pick up the whole thing in your hand—like your phone, a ball, or any other small object—because we are going to be turning it over and around to get a feel for different angles. This is to ensure that you really know what it looks like from all sides.
Once you can throw this particular “ball” into the air and still know what your house looks like no matter how it lands, you’re ready to start the real work of protecting your home with your sacred smoke.
Brass Tacks, Practice
Gather one or both of the featured materials from the end of this chapter along with your incense charcoal, burner, tongs, a windproof lighter, resin spoon (don’t burn yourself), and anything else you think you might need. Use the tongs to hold the incense charcoal (remember, the saltpeter makes it light quickly and evenly, so you don’t want to just hold it by the edges and hope for the best). Once your charcoal is lit (tip: if you think it’s lit, you should smell a faint whiff of ozone), drop a single rosemary leaf on it to see if it smokes before adding more material. You don’t want to waste more material if you have to relight the charcoal. Add more rosemary and/or dragon’s blood once the charcoal is hot enough.
The next step is to open a window farthest from where you will be starting in the home. In the case of an apartment, you might open a window facing the west because that’s the direction the sun travels, east to west. In a multilevel home without a basement, I might start in the attic and end up working my way out the door. The point is to get into each nook and cranny in the home in between locations A and B. Because I practice magic, I prefer to set my intention by working counterclockwise through my space when I’m banishing negativity, bad vibes, or energy I don’t want in my area. You are giving anything nasty in the home an out while you are working by driving it to the open window, door, etc. You don’t want to go through all of this work only to trap it in the corner for a week.
Walk through all the areas of your space carrying your brazier in a safe way that won’t burn your hand while you bathe them in smoke similar to what you’ve done so far in chapter 2 with your body. If you can do this when you have the least amount of distractions possible, great, but I know that’s asking a lot. Not everyone can drop what they’re doing to run through an empty house with fire and smoke. Make sure you are getting into closets, showers, behind the mirrors in medicine cabinets, while still being observant of the burning materials.
I’m a modern practitioner, so during a recent house cleansing I did to banish a nasty spirit (don’t try this at home, beginners’ sage is not going to cut it), I used modern technology to give me a hand. Once I completed my journey from the attic to the basement, I stood next to the heat return for a moment to get the heating system to spread the smoke for me to make sure I had gotten it well into every room.
I chose rosemary and dragon’s blood for this chapter because of the purification properties of rosemary and the protective aspects of dragon’s blood. Using rosemary to purify a space doesn’t just leave it a blank and empty vessel waiting to be filled, as with something like white sage. It leaves the space feeling serenely happy, content even. Nature abhors a vacuum, so you want something good to fill in the space, rather than leaving it neutral and empty, potentially waiting for anything that comes along to disturb that fresh, clean feeling. Pairing that with dragon’s blood, resin from the dragon tree, means that protection is also yours.
One of the ways I make sure that the protection lasts longer than just the smoke by itself is to seal the home with oil after the smoke cleansing is over. Following the same route that you took to drive out anything in the house, anoint all of the windows, exterior doors, the water main if you can get to it, the backs of mirrors in the bathroom, a small spot in the corner of a mirror (mirrors are doors, too!) with a protective sign or symbol of your choice. It could be a star, an equal-armed cross, a circle—it’s up to you. Once you get to the door or window you left open, say, “and stay out!” Shut the door and be done with it.

Right in Front of You
By Madisyn Taylor
Maybe you are using a desire you can’t fulfill to distract you from truly engaging the blessings you already have.
When it comes to the things we want, there always seems to be an endless list. No matter how many times we get something off that list, we add new things to replace it. In life, this drama of wanting and getting and wanting is all part of the dance. The things we want motivate us to get up and get them.
And yet, at the same time, we can torment ourselves with our wanting, especially when we want something we can’t have or can’t find. It is in cases like these that it might be fruitful to entertain the idea that maybe what you really want is right in front of you. Maybe you are using this desire you can’t fulfill to distract you from truly engaging the blessings you already have. It may seem like that doesn’t make sense, yet we do it all the time. It may be easier to see in other people than to see it in ourselves. We have all heard our friends wishing they were more this or less that, and looking at them we see clearly that they are everything they are wishing they were. We know people who have wonderful partners and yet envy yours. We wish we could give these people a look at their situations from our perspective so that they could see that what they want really is right in front of them.
It’s not too far-fetched to consider that we might be victims of the same folly. It can be scary to have what we want. We get caught up in the chase and forget to enjoy the beauty right in front of us–like a child who never wants the toy she has in her hand but always the one just out of her reach. Take a moment today to consider the many things you are holding in the palm of your hand and how you might best play with them.

The Treasure Hunt – Part 9
by Stephen Halpert
The wind howled; blinding rain thrashed against the ship. The galleon was taking on more water than could be bailed. It heaved from side to side like a gigantic dying creature. Sails crashed onto the main deck. Crew members screamed as they tried desperately to save themselves.
David was glad he had read Treasure Island. He remembered Long John Silver’s ship and had a general sense of the ship’s layout. He knew that he, Todd and Jack were standing on a small upper deck near the stairs leading to the Captains quarters.
“This way,” David cried pointing to the small stairway, leading to a heavy door with a brass handle. Holding the wand, he led them up the short steps, through the brass plated door and after a few steps into the Captain’s Cabin.
“Best we lock this,” Jack said closing the heavy door and turning an elaborate inside key. “Not sure how much time we have but at least no one will barge in on us.”
“Good idea,” Todd said. Together they managed to set the brass lock in place.
“Look daddy,” David said excitedly. He pointed to a fancy carved table on which was an open wooden chest containing gold and sparkling gems.
“That must be the treasure,” David said.
“Or part of it at least,” Jack said. His eyes were wide with astonishment.
“I’ll never doubt your wand as long as I live,” Todd told David. “This is amazing.”
The ship pitched hard to one side. Jack staggered to keep his balance. He pulled off his rain poncho, spread it open and he and Todd wrapped it around the elaborate wooden chest. Then Jack pulled it closed, tightened it and held it over his shoulder like an oversized knapsack.
“Might be time to get back to Julia’s,” he laughed.
“Might be,” Todd agreed.
There was a heavy banging against the cabin door. Cries that must have been in Spanish rang out. Before David could get the wand from his knapsack the wooden door flew open.
Standing in the doorway were two Spanish naval officers. Seeing the intruders, they drew their swords and advanced. Behind them stood the Captain. He spoke to them in what seemed rapid Spanish. They stopped awaiting orders.
The Captain saw his treasure chest was not on the table. He screamed pointing to Jack’s poncho. The sailors began to advance.
Now David had hold of his wand. He quickly waved it saying “Take us back to Julia’s house.”
As the confused Spanish sailors advanced with arms outreached, they vanished from sight.
The mainmast crashed, splintering onto the main deck, tearing the galleon apart, covering helpless crew members in soaking wet sails and riggings.
Moments later Jack, Todd and David were standing in Julia’s back yard.”
Lisa was just coming out of the pool. Evelyn was nursing a tall stiff drink. Her eyes were half closed, a blurry expression on her face. Apparently Judge Archibald Featherstone had left for his office. He took Evelyn’s documents saying he needed time in his law library.
Julia stood by the glass table on the patio. She smiled at Jack. “You’re all drenched. What’s going on.”
He and Todd grinned and broke into hilarity.
“What have you got there?” Becky said.
Jack reached for Julia, kissing her intently. Then he set down his poncho, opened it and lifted the wooden chest onto the glass table.
“There’s more where this came from,” he said. “Not that far off shore from the beach. It might all still be there under centuries of silt, rocks, sand and seaweed.”
Julia saw the assortment of gold and jewels. Her eyes widened. “Papa Hemingway was right after all.”
Jack nodded. “The Spanish galleon was thrashed against the rocks and sunk, sunk just offshore. I could see Key West from its deck.”
“Are you babbling?”
He kissed her again. Todd hugged and kissed Becky.
“Not sure when,” Jack said. “But it’s still there, a treasure for the ages. I could see Key West from the quarter deck. Couldn’t be hidden that far out to sea.”
“And buried in plain sight, more or less” Todd chuckled.
“Evelyn looked at the treasure chest. “Oh my,” she said. I’d best go lie down. I fear tequila makes me a bit delusional.” She turned and back went inside.
Lisa saw the treasure chest. Her eyes bulged. She turned to her brother, shook her head, and hugged him.
“You’re the best little brother in the whole world,” she said. “I’m sorry I ever doubted you.”
“That’s ok,” David grinned. “And I’ll never call you Crow Girl again.” From his pocket he took a beautifully polished multicolor opal and handed it to his big sister. Then he grinned. “This is for you. Call it an early wedding present. I picked it up off the floor when the ship heaved.”
“What ship? Oh, never mind. It doesn’t matter.” Lisa peered into the smooth surface of the opal. Tears filled her eyes, she choked up. “This is for me! Really for me? No one ever gave me a jewel like this before.”
“That’s what little brothers are for,” David said.

Choosing the right day of the week for your spell
Posted by Michelle Gruben
Planetary magick is a complex system which blends astrology, ancient cosmology, and celestial intelligences in an attempt to bring the most effective results. In this article, we’ll discuss the planetary rulers of the seven days of the week, and the best day to perform different types of magick.
Planetary magic can seem cumbersome, especially to Witches more accustomed to elemental (Earth) magic. But you don’t have to spend hours drafting talismans or poring over charts to add some planetary flavor to your spellwork. Using a very simple overview of magickal timing, you can make sure your working is aligned with the appropriate planetary ruler.
The idea of planetary rulership (and the 7-day week) dates all the way back to Chaldean (Babylonian) astrology. They assigned a planet to rule each day, and further divided the day into planetary hours. Later, the Greek and Roman civilizations adapted the Babylonian calender for their use. Planetary magic was re-discovered by the medieval magicians, who looked to the Classical world for inspiration. The tradition of using different days for different types of magic was put forth in the 16th-century Key of Solomon, a foundational text of the Western magical tradition.
Planetary magick relies mainly on the seven Classical “planets,” (although minor planets, comets, and other features enter into advanced systems). Of the seven, the sun and moon aren’t really planets, of course. But ancient astrologers didn’t know that, so the nickname stuck.
In English (as well as in French, Spanish and related languages), the names of the days of the week still reflect their planetary rulers. (This is very handy when you’re trying to remember which is which!) Below, you’ll find the ruling planet for each of the seven days, and suggested magick for each day:
Sunday (The Sun)
Bright, life-giving, and magnanimous, the Sun is the largest heavenly body in sight. Therefore, Sunday is the day for your biggest, boldest spells. Active change, wealth, hope, popularity, health, charisma and vitality fall under the sway of Solar magick. The first day of the week is also the day of bright beginnings. Call upon fresh, Solar light to scrub out the corners of a stale situation and bring renewed energy. Do workings to make friends, gain favor, or raise your profile at work or in your personal life. Grow in confidence and leadership. Bring clarity and simplicity to difficult problems. Make affirmations. Begin projects.
Monday (The Moon)
Ruled by the inconstant moon, Monday is a powerful but unreliable day for spellwork. It is the day of introspection, illusion, and fantasy, the day when the astral plane is said to lie closest to the Earth plane. Monday is the perfect day to do scrying, trance work, or dream journeying. Spells of love and fertility may be performed on Monday, especially if the moon phase is a right. Because the Moon rules the tides, Monday is the best day for Water magick of all kinds. Create traveler’s amulets. Anoint and cleanse magickal tools. Commune with Fae and spirits. Reflect and renew the spirit.
On Tuesday, warlike Mars will see that you’re justified in your nitty-gritty magicks. This is the day for breaking out the nastier spells when the nice one just didn’t work. Sowing strife, if you’re so inclined, will be most effective on a Tuesday. Also, charms of aggression, ambition, lust, and sexual potency. Activate protective talismans. Reverse hexes and psychic attack. Cultivate personal strength. Prevail in fights or games of skill.
Wednesday is named for Wotan (Odin), closest Norse equivalent to the fleet-footed Roman god. Adaptable Mercury rules learning, luck, travel, and trade, so Wednesday is good for workings on any of these matters. Improve communication. Increase focus and alertness. Prosper in business or games of chance. Make or consecrate money-drawing charms. Wednesday is also a fine day for divination, especially using cards, runes, or lots. Mercury is a nimble trickster, so if you were going to do a spell to distract or mislead (not that you would!), Wednesday is the day for those shenanigans.
Beneficent Jupiter rules the night sky, and he is the go-to planet for petitions of power and luck. Thursday is a great day to craft spells for good fortune, health, and prosperity. (Mercury brings quick cash, but Jupiter governs the long term accumulation and preservation of wealth.) Thursday is considered an auspicious day to sign contracts and acquire property. Do spells related to justice and authority. Visualize future success. Create protective and restorative charms. Bless friends, family, and home.
Friday is ruled by Venus, and that can only mean one thing: Love magick! Friday is the traditional day to do love-drawing magic, or cast a spell to bring your lover closer. Besides sexual attraction, spells of friendship, sympathy, reconciliation and self-love fall under Friday’s love-magick heading. Because Venus is closely connected to the natural world, it’s also a good day to harvest plants and herbs for magical uses. Also on Friday: Do mirror magick. Make baths, potions, and philtres. Weave glamours and enchantments. Craft workings for pleasure, enjoyment, and intoxication.
The final day of the week is ruled by Saturn, lord of endings. Saturn has a reputation as an inauspicious day for magick–but of course, it depends on the type of magick. There is no better day for spells of binding and banishing. Saturday is also a good day for Underworld magick, communing with ancestors and contacting spirits. (The Key of Solomon specifies that Saturday is the day of spirits who died a natural death–those who died heroically should be honored on Tuesday.) The energy of Saturn helps to cultivate patience and wisdom. Recover from grief. Overcome addictions. Cast protective wards. Sever unhealthy bonds. Visit elders or reflect on the past.
A bit about planetary hours
As I mentioned in the beginning of this article, each day may be further divided into planetary hours. Each hour of the day may be ruled by the same or a different planet from the one that rules the day. (For example, Sunday begins on the hour of the Sun, but the second hour of the day is attributed to Venus.)
You can use planetary hours in different ways. Sometimes, you might want the day and hour to match. (Doing a working during the hour of Jupiter on a Thursday, for instance, in order to get the strongest influence of Jupiter.) Or you can mix ‘n match them for more a more specialized influence. (The hour of Mercury on the day of Venus, say, when you need a little extra luck in your online dating life.)
You can consult a magickal almanac for the planetary hours. In addition to knowing the sequence of the hours, you’ll also need to know how they apply to the time of day where you are. This can be a rather complex calculation, involving time zones, exact time of sunrise and sunset, and so on. Not to mention, you’ll need to be available at the right planetary hour–free from work and distractions.
For some practitioners, it’s simply too much–and that’s okay. Don’t fall into the trap of believing that ignoring planetary hours will ruin your magick. It’s better to do a working at the “wrong” time than to put it off indefinitely.
Does planetary timing matter?
Opinions differ on what difference planetary timing makes in the outcomes of spellwork. The best way to determine this is to try it for yourself. Most Witches already use some kind of magical timing. If you do attraction magick during the waxing moon, or commune with spirits at Samhain, you’re probably aware of the powerful difference that timing can make.
Personally, I think that timing is an influential–but not determining factor–in the outcome of a spell. Just like any other correspondence, the right planetary day will add to your chances of success. Timing can work for you or against you. But it ultimately depends on your will, the will of others, and the will of the gods.
You may have read somewhere, for instance, that a love spell requires a pink candle. But what if you only have a green candle? Does that mean the working will fail?
No, of course not. But you’ll be missing out on the cultural and psychological associations of the color pink as it pertains to romance. You may also have a lingering doubt about using the “wrong” color candle, and that thought can hurt your magic. Disregarding magickal timing can have the same ill effect.
One of the best things that can be said about planetary timing is that it encourages discipline. It makes you plan ahead. If you feel that you have to wait until Wednesday to make that lucky talisman, you’re likely to put more preparation (and therefore more energy) into the working. You’re likely to give yourself the time to assemble the right ingredients, and meditate on the best possible outcome. For me, having a standing Monday night appointment with my crystal ball makes me a lot more likely to practice with it, since Monday only happens once a week.
I also like that planetary timing aligns the magick worker with all the other temporal beings practicing magic at that time. When making a love spell on Friday, you’re joined by countless brothers and sisters of the Craft. It doesn’t really matter what the planets are doing–your working can be augmented and amplified by all the compatible human energy.
May you find magic in every day!

Weekly Horoscopes beginning Sunday, 23 February 2020
If you`re born within cusp period (16 to 26 of any month); you`re advised to read horoscopes of both signs covered by that period. You`re in the border; you may have influences from houses within those signs.
Outlines are longer versions; consists of every possible detail of everyday and based on three parts of each sign: 1st, 2nd & 3rd Decan; that is, any of three divisions of 10° within a sign of the zodiac. Even if you know or don`t know your Decan; I recommend, please read all three Decan.
Personal theme: I am!!
Fire & cardinal sign: March 21 — April 19
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: The last thing you`re in a mood for are lengthy conversations focusing on tedious details. While these could be so irritating you ignore them, talking these over with others will both focus your mind and lead to helpful insights. Still, don`t rush things. With so much in flux, you`re urged to regard even simple plans as more of a trial run than anything lasting.
Interviews and business meetings will bring benefits your way. Extra duties and responsibilities will hardly seem an effort when you are enjoying yourself so much. In addition to this, a work assignment will provide an outlet for your natural talents. Friends and loved ones seek your company and are inspired by your creativity. You find it fun to socialise and group projects will bring you joy. Encourage a young relative to follow their dreams.
Imagine trying to push water upstream. That`s how much of this week could feel.. What you likely need is a good engineer and clever machinery. You could attract all of that by Thursday. First you may need toto acknowledge just how tough the task ahead is. You also perhaps need to consider whether or not you`re well enough equipped. Conversation taking place midweek should provide a turning point. Then, as the Moon moves into your sign, others may be ready to listen, respond to your cries for help and move you forward. But yes, this could prove expensive – at the very least you are likely to owe someone a huge favour.
Personal theme: I have!!
Earth & fixed sign: April 20 — May 20
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: Despite the practical streak that comes with being an earth sign, you`re sometimes stubborn about altering plans you worked hard to organise. However, with the retrograde Mercury triggering unexpected revelations and surprise twists in existing arrangements, you`re urged to go with the flow. Ironically, once you do, discussions will reveal ways you can eliminate certain once worrying complications, and far more easily than you imagined possible.
Arrangements you and a partner are making fill you with excitement. Finding new ways to meet each other`s needs will be fun. Spend time together in a relaxing hideaway where you can let down your defences. Are you single? You`re in the mood for love but be sure you don`t attract the wrong kind of attention. Working behind the scenes makes you productive. High levels of intuition help you sense the best opportunities.
Mars is moving through another of the Earth signs, Capricorn. You may remember that this area of the zodiac is already populated by Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto. All this throws Taurus accent on the need to know more. With Mars passing through this sign you should feel energised and so soak up information with ease. True, Mercury the planet of communications is retrograde. yet it`s possible on this occasion though that that will work very much in your favour: subconsciously you could attract exactly the information you need. Those born under Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces may be useful sources. Yet you will also likely be exasperated by a timeline that is totally unrealistic – but equally agree that if progress is to be made, then a meeting needs to be scheduled for early March.
Personal theme: I think!!
Air sign: May 21 — June 20
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: Although you`ve talked about rethinking your work or lifestyle for ages, the insights triggered by the New Moon, on Sunday the 23rd, which accents exactly such matters, will turn those ideas into plans. The trick is to ensure they`re flexible. While complications are inevitable, even these will lead to constructive discussions and, often improvements. Still, be aware they`re just the beginning of more far-reaching changes.
You might want to talk to someone before making an important decision. A friend will give you some excellent advice and you will recognise the wisdom of their words. Whether you`re thinking about moving to a new place, renovating your home or moving in with your lover, by the end of the week you will feel more certain about long-term plans.. Rewards will flow on the career front. If past arrangements caused confusion, the air will be cleared. This will cause everyone to breathe a sigh of relief.
It might seem that you`re treading water and not making progress. Bur bear in mind that Mercury is presently retrograde at the apex of your solar chart. Not only might you be receiving confusing signals, you might even be giving them. You could consider whether or not you have too many fingers in too many pies. In fact, that may be pointed out to you- most likely by an Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn who feels you need to focus. What they might not realise is that you are actually incubating ideas. In this you could be super successful. If not pushed too fast and too soon, and instead given time to consider options, then you are most likely to arrive at satisfactory conclusion – albeit closer to the Equinox in March.
Personal theme: I feel!!
Water & cardinal sign: June 21 — July 22
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: After having survived contentious issues regarding joint plans and priorities, that is, yours and those of others, you hoped everything was settled. It`s not. Unappealing as yet more discussions may be, either options you`d previously missed or exciting, if unexpected, new ideas will come to light. However, with so much in transition, you`re urged to regard these, too, as but one stage in those plans.
Something has upset you but instead of opening up and talking about emotions, you are suffering in silence. You can`t bottle up all your feelings when they are so powerful. For the sake of your health, it`s time to have a heart to heart. It may be necessary to get additional training if you`re thinking about embarking on a new career path. By adding to your qualifications, you will be able to realise goals that were previously out of your reach.
The week begins with the New Moon in another of the Water signs. It is reasonable to do deduce that this is a good thing. Yet Mercury is also retrograde in Pisces. It may be that plans to move forward don`t work out quite as quickly as you would like. Recall that yours is one of the Cardinal signs of the zodiac. You are generally at your happiest when you see `things being done`. Irritating as it may be, you may need to wait whilst incubate ideas, or get into the mood for action. By the time that the Moon reaches one of the Cardinal signs on Thursday, and with major aspects of Venus and Pluto at work, you may be reminded of a partnership that was once dynamic, and though at times almost too much, worked well. Indeed, it`s possible that by Friday you will be asked if you like to reinstate this collaboration.
Personal theme: I will!!
Fire & fixed sign: July 23 — August 22
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: While you can be headstrong, long ago you realised certain matters require a joint effort. Mostly, you`ve gone along with others` ideas. Now, however, you`re encountering a range of issues, some minor but many crucial. And they all require you acknowledge certain individuals are better informed than you are. The solution? It`s simple. Admit it`s more about your ego than hard facts, the rest is easy.
Partnership issues that have caused you a lot of tension will soon be resolved. A long-term relationship goal will take a step closer to becoming reality. Even so you know you have a long way to go before you feel totally confident and secure. You will hit a peak in career affairs. With all the effort you have already put into this area, you shouldn`t be surprised. A colleague will alert you to a job opening and this position will seem perfectly suited for you.
It might easily feel as though others are pushing you. The more they try, the more resistant you could be. If dealing with those born under the Water signs of cancer, Scorpio or Pisces anticipate difficulties. It could be that these individuals (especially those born under Cancer) are anxious to see action. What they might not realise is that you are still processing developments. It might also be that you are awaiting news. Note that Mercury is presently retrograde. That isn`t a bad thing in that it gives pause for reflection. And yes, you may well be re-evaluating your position. There is also the high probability of needing to know that you have an expert fully behind you. They too may be awaiting news. Yet far from this being an irritating `pause week`, you could also gain extra- ordinary insights into what truly motivates someone and how you can harness this knowledge to your advantage.
Personal theme: I analyse!!
Earth sign: August 23 — September 22
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: Being a Virgo, you`re probably already aware your ruler Mercury is retrograde, and is triggering twists and turns. While you tend to focus on worrying developments, some are amazing, if unexpected. This week, you`re encouraged to focus on the latter. Yes, they`ll be disruptive in the short term. However, you`ll cope with them, and the joys they bring will last for a very long time.
Conversations flow like a mountain stream. Discussions are harmonious and this will help strengthen bonds between family, friends and workmates. You will be more sensitive to other people`s needs and it will be the workplace where this is appreciated most. Some support from behind the scenes will take you by surprise. You are being encouraged to put more effort into a private project and the results of your hard work will have a transformative effect on the way some people see you.
It seems highly likely that you`re coming to a parting of the ways. Mercury is after all retrograde in your opposite sign. Extracting yourself from a working partnership will likely take a couple more weeks yet. Using the March Equinox is a convenient marker, it might be as well to assume that it will take until then to disentangle. In the meantime, it may be that this collaboration still has value. A project that was incubating toward the end of last year could yet come back for review and benefit you both. Noting that Mars continues its journey through another of the Earth signs, Capricorn, where it energises the research and development area of your solar chart, this might also be a good week for reviewing a latent talent or hobby and improving it.
Personal theme: I balance!!
Air & cardinal sign: September 23 — October 22
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: Few things bother you more than upsetting others, either with disruptive changes in plans or facts you know they`d rather not face. Yet, bizarrely, these tricky matters lead to discussions more positive and far-reaching than you`d imagined possible. Knowing that, be bold, and raise certain even trickier matters. While there`ll be some reluctance to tackle these, do so anyway. They, too, will soon be resolved.
People have plenty to say but group discussions are getting you nowhere. You`re tired of all the talking and you want to take action. Other people can continue thinking about it if that`s what they want. Unlike them, you need to see some progress and taking the initiative will pay off handsomely. Romance, friendships and creative pursuits will be a source of inner joy. Spending quality time with your partner or best friend will strengthen your bond.
This could prove one of the best weeks of this year for archiving, storing, minimising and yes, also health checks. Indeed, the whole idea of clearing up and clearing out should appeal hugely. This mood won`t last and it might help to know that a distinct change of gear will come when your ruling planet, Venus, moves into Taurus early next month. Determining to use the remainder of February to resolve old issues and get rid of detritus, should prove a productive use of your time. There`s also the distinct possibility of renewing contact with a collector. You might also restore contact with someone you worked with in the past and who`s knowledge of why certain systems are as they are providing you with ammunition for a meeting next month.
Scorpio & Ophiuchus
Personal theme: I desire!!
Water & fixed signs: October 23 — November 21
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: Although you`ll give others advice, you`ll happily leave them to make their own decisions, even if they`re unwise. Now, however, you`re dealing with complicated joint issues. The trick it to ensure you`ve stated your views, yet avoid rushing things. With Mercury retrograde, both sudden revelations and surprise developments could lead to unexpected and, often, welcome changes in either circumstances or your thinking about the matters in question.
You`re making a good impression on people you meet. There is someone you have been hoping to impress for ages and their encouragement will be the inspiration you need to be a success. Confused arrangements will make you frustrated towards the end of the week. A practical friend will come up with a great solution and this will help keep you calm. You are starting to look at problems in a more logical and analytical way.
You could waste time going back over a situation that is so far in the past that repair is impossible – and arguably not the best use of your energy. True, that`s unlikely to stop you thinking about how things could have been. Yet this is not productive. You might do better to ensure that a repeat is impossible. To do this might require renewing contact with someone who left their job sometime back. True, it could be that you are seeking a reference. It is perhaps as likely that you know they`ve encountered similar difficulties to those you`re facing now and that the strategy they used to overcome challenge proved successful. You may want to know more about how this was implemented.
Personal theme: I see!!
Fire sign: November 22 — December 21
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: Mostly, your independent streak is a virtue. At the moment, however, it could lead to clashes over suggestions regarding the wise use of your resources, from money or time, to your ideas or even emotional support. Annoying as others` advice may seem, at least think about what they`re saying. Within days, unexpected events will make you glad you listened to their ideas, warnings and guidance.
Someone you work with is starting to get on your nerves. You`re tired of giving answers only to have them repeat the same questions. It may be that they are nervous about making mistakes and you are judging them too harshly. A tendency to criticise others can be a sign you need to heal something within yourself. Some brisk exercise will help release any tension, anger or anxiety. Include your favourite activities in your plans for the weekend and this will uplift and inspire you.
Mercury is retrograde at the very base of your solar chart. This isn`t something that happens every year and provides space for reviewing what is and what is not important. It may be that you get involved with a major archiving project. It might also be that you use this time to get rid of items you no longer need or love. In this respect, midweek could prove exciting and challenging as you evaluate. It`s highly likely that health matters will require care. If you`ve been cavalier about check-ups in the past, you may be reminded of the value of regular maintenance. It is perhaps not the case that it`s your health that is the issue, but that of someone on whom you rely. A review of your joint position and how you can support one another better may be necessary before the end of February.
Personal theme: I use!!
Earth & cardinal sign: December 22 — January 19
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: Tidying up the practical side of life, from your possessions to your finances is one thing. While it`s still hard work, it gives you a sense of accomplishment. Dealing with the emotional issues you`re facing is another matter. You may have been unaware of these or simply ignoring them. Whatever the case, these must now take priority. You already know the reason why.
Problems in a close relationship are starting to overwhelm you. If you need advice from an older friend or relative, listen to your instincts. You aren`t being disloyal to a partner by discussing your worries with someone you can trust. Especially if your other half isn`t listening to you. You are starting to make some headway with home refurbishment plans. Your home has always been a relaxing escape from the stress of modern life and it will feel good to relax in comfortable surroundings.
There is the strong possibility of getting involved in a power struggle before the end of this month. This is perhaps not too unusual. It may be that someone has an idea of how they want things to be, but lacks the diligence or practical skills to ensure that work is carried out in a timely manner. With Mercury retrograde in Pisces presently, it disentangling may be necessary before there can be success. It would surely be hugely irritating to you if others did not understand the need to go more slowly and to make adjustments as required rather than wait for a crisis to develop. And yes, it could feel as though you`ve been through this movie before and know the ending. It might help to renew contact with someone who is familiar with this type of situation and who can perhaps laugh with you that the chaos that some people (designers or artists?) create.
Personal theme: I know!!
Air & fixed sign: January 20 — February 18
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: Things are going well, but aren`t remotely what you expected. Tempting as it is to get them back on track, you`re encouraged to go with the flow. These changes are taking you in a new direction, one that will both suit you and lead to events as surprising as they are welcome. First, however, you must break away from certain longstanding, but increasingly unworkable, arrangements.
A chance to help someone or a group of people who are less fortunate will arrive quite suddenly. Working for a humanitarian or charitable organisation will give you a new lease of life. This is your chance to do something meaningful for the most vulnerable people in your community. A senior colleague is putting pressure on you to get results but you need to take your time to avoid making mistakes. Don`t let them push you in the wrong direction.
You may remember that Mercury is retrograde in neighbouring Pisces – one of the key financial zones of your solar chart. It may be necessary to focus on plugging a leak. True, by Thursday it might also be the case that you could secure a discount only by paying a large deposit now. Either way, resources would then be limited. Attention paid to account management would surely be wise. In particular, you might also wish to review the amount you spend on subscriptions. Again, there may be savings to be had.. Quite separate to all this, you could be reminded of the value of building a safety cushion that needn`t necessarily be of the financial kind. It may be that there are items – or favours – that you could store away now for use later.
Personal theme: I believe!!
Water sign: February 19 — March 20
Your horoscope for this week:
Epigram: Are you overwhelmed with questions about the past or future decisions? The Pisces New Moon, on Sunday the 23rd, is a turning point.. As you review what`s worked and what hasn`t, you`ll begin to see your options in a new, and fresh, light. For now, consider everything that comes your way. If you must make plans, ensure they`re tentative. You`ve lots yet to encounter and explore.
A judgemental colleague is doing their best to undermine your confidence. Refuse to rise to the bait. Ignore their comments and surround yourself instead, with people who appreciate your creativity. You have skills, experience and knowledge that will take you far. There`s never been a better time to apply for a more lucrative job. Emphasise your accomplishments, qualifications and awards during job interviews. You need to showcase your talents if you are hoping to be offered a desirable position.
It could seem to others that you`re being particularly elusive (Mercury is retrograde in your sign!). Yet it may be that you`re involved in major relationship issues – including one with yourself. Health matters might need your full attention. As you likely know, each sign of the Zodiac is related to a different area of the physical body. For Pisces, it`s imperative that your feet are well cared for. In this respect, you may be drawn back to a style you used years ago and which you know gives the support you need. At a slightly different level, you might also re-engage with a teacher who recognised your talents many moons ago and whose present-day advice could set you on new track.
