In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

Seasons of the Witch – Legends and Lore, Ancient Holidays
And Some Not So Ancient!

Today Is …

July 1

July was named after the great leader Julius Caesar, who was born in this summer month. Because the warm weather continues, activity levels are high, even though the days are beginning to shorten. Consequently, numerous festivals during this month focus on family, friends, and social interaction.

For magical purposes, July directs our attention to personal growth and improvements. This includes increasing your knowledge, continuing efforts for prosperity, creating new ideas and works of art, and also taking time out periodically to really enjoy yourself.  Our society sometimes mistakes much-needed leisure time for laziness, but this month’s energies know better. Go and have fun, carrying the Goddess with you for a little extra energy.

The energy of July builds on the clarity of June. As we become more aware both of the creative fire within ourselves, and of the promptings toward greater awareness that come both from the Archangels and our personal guardian angels, we become more attuned to the pulse of the Universe and our own part in bringing about heaven on earth, the awakening of all beings to our true potential as co-creators with each other and the Divine One.

Celebrate your ability to be a part of Goddess religion. Light a candle on your altar for the religious freedom of Women everywhere.

The month of July opens in Nepal with the Naga Panchami festival, which is devoted to the Snake-Gods called Nagas. Sacred snake images are displayed on religious altars, offerings are made at snake holes, and parades featuring live serpents fill the main streets of many villages.

In Japan, this day is sacred to Fuji, the ancient Japanese Goddess of Fire. Fuji is also regarded as the grandmother of Japan, and on this special day (which also marks the start of Mount Fuji Climbing Season) she is honored with prayers and burnt offerings.

Legends and Lore for July

July, the seventh month of the current Gregorian calendar and the second month of Summer’s rule, derives its name from Julius (Julius Caesar).

The traditional birthstone amulet of July is the ruby; and the larkspur and the water lily are the month’s traditional flowers.

July is shared by the astrological signs of Cancer the Crab and Leo the Lion, and is sacred to the following Pagan deities: Apt (or Apet), Athena, Sothis, Spider Woman, and Rosea.

Japan: Fuji, the ancient Goddess of Fire and the Grandmother of Japan, is honored with prayers and burnt offerings.

Nepal: Naga Panchami – festival devoted to the Snake-Gods called Nagas. Snake images are displayed on altars, offerings made at snake holds, and parades with live serpents crowd the main streets in many villages.

1975: Day endangered species became internationally protected; a day to celebrate all the world’s creatures. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora was signed/adopted on 3/3/1973, but wasn’t enforced 7/1/1975

July 1 – Founder’s Day – Lynnie Levy and Jade River have birthdays one day apart. (Although Lynnie is several year older than Jade) Lynnie’s birthday is July 1st and Jade’s is July 2nd. Celebrate your ability to be a part of Goddess religion. Light a candle on your altar for the religious freedom of women everywhere.

NOTE: Because of the large number of ancient calendars, many in simultaneous use, as well as different ways of computing holy days (marked by the annual inundation, the solar year, the lunar month, the rising of key stars, and other celestial and terrestrial events), you may find these holy days celebrated a few days earlier or later at your local temple.

The Year Is Divided Into Four Seasons:
The first season is of a frigid complexion, and this is “Winter”;
The second is of the complexion of Air, and this is “Spring”;
Then follows the third, which is “Summer”, and is of the complexion of Fire;
Lastly, there is the fourth, wherein fruits are matured, which is “Autumn”.

Tasha’s Astro Planner for July 2015

July begins with a Full Moon and ends with one too. This is a month with a lot of impact, so it seems fitting that it will begin and end that way. Adding to the Full Moon on July 1 there is an early AM conjunction of Jupiter and Venus, making for a day with great potential for pleasure and gratification. Later that day Sun trine Neptune provides potential spiritual uplift and for those who can listen, a chance to hear some heavenly music.

Full Moon in Capricorn on the 1st implies some kind of a boost or growth for business and/or politics. Expect some interesting announcements. The New Moon in Cancer on the 15th Is a good time to begin projects for the home, possibly involving food preservation, or to initiate family get-togethers or other gatherings in the home. The second full Moon of this month is on the 31st, in Aquarius. This is an altruistic Moon, experiences or opportunities involving helping humanity can be planned for or expected.

July 15, the day of the New Moon in Cancer there are two Pluto oppositions involving Mars and Mercury. If possible avoid travel that day. Use the available energy to dig through and discard or transform possessions you no longer need or want. Make elimination and change a choice. The Sun Pluto opposition of the 6th is another day for putting your sense of discrimination to work. On the 18th be very mindful if using tools or traveling. Accidents can happen. The 24th, 25th and 26th are very powerful days. Plan to do something strenuous in a unique or unusual fashion, perhaps involving or creating a breakthrough.

The 21st, 22nd and 23rd are excellent days to make progress with organization and structure. It will be easy to think clearly and speak directly to any issue. The month of July holds many days that will be useful for eliminating, organizing, restructuring and moving forward with what needs to be done. Make plans and discuss, however hold off on beginning any big projects. Mercury moves through three signs this month, Venus enters Virgo and then goes retrograde on the 25th, choices may be rethought or reconsidered then.

Mars stays in Cancer all month, Real Estate may boom, there could be stomach illnesses in the news. Jupiter continues in Leo. The theater may benefit as well as children or things involving them.  Saturn continues retrograde in Scorpio, making for chances to go back over any structure, whether physical or other, to make sure it is solid. Uranus turns Retrograde on the 26th, a day of high impact. What is important is to use the available energies in the best way possible. Check my website at for my day by day planner which can also be found on Granny Moon’s Morning Feast. The stars are there to guide us, not afflict us. Let us be grateful and use their guidance well.

Goddess For Today:  Grismadevi
Half-Year Day (Hong Kong)

Themes:  Cycles; Recreation; Rest; Summer; Time
Symbols:  Summer Flowers; Red; Cup

About Grismadevi:  This Buddhist Goddess whose name means “summer” joins us to welcome the season and energize our efforts for Goddess-centered living.  In works of art she often appears wearing the color red, the hue of life’s energy, and carrying a cup offering refreshment to all in need.

To Do Today:  On this day, people in Hong Kong take a much-deserved reprieve from their labors to welcome summer and mark the halfway point in the year; we can do likewise today.  This is a moment to pat yourself on the back for the magical goals you’ve attained thus far and the growing power of the Goddess within you.

Wear something red or flowery today to accent Grismadevi’s energies in and around your life.  Drink red juices or eat red foods to internalize the vibrancy of summer and this goddess.  Suggestions include red grapefruit juice for purification, red peppers for zest, strawberry pie to partake life’s sweet abundance, a tossed tomato salad for love (the dressing brings harmony), raspberries to protect your relationships, and rhubarb for devotion.

Finally, leave a cup of reddish-colored liquid or a bouquet of fresh flowers on your altar or family table today to honor Grismadevi and welcome both her and the summer sunshine into your home.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ June Meal Blessing

For this last day of June, enjoy a special meal tonight and honor yourself, your friends, and your family.
As you sit down to eat, offer this meal blessing.

Great Spirit, source of all life,
Thank you for this food.

Thank you for your
guidance and protection.
Thank you for my home and my loved ones.

May those who gave their lives and energies to bring us this meal be blessed with peace, love, and release.
May we each be ever grateful for all that we have,
And may we extend those blessings into the world.

As we receive so do we give back,
So mote it be.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ Herb-Wrapped Candles

Dress Your Candles! With twine, secure thyme sprigs at the base of a pillar candle, leaves pointing to the wick end, stems at base of candle,
binding the cuttings tightly all around. When the candle is encircled, trim ends to be even with the base of the candle, so it will stand
straight. A fresh table adornment!

Option: if you prefer “fancy,” add a lovely bow to coordinate with your table or theme!

Just a note of caution – make sure the candle doesn’t burn down to the herbs, or your table decoration will go “up in smoke”!

“The Goddess Companion”

Here is how I saw the Goddess:
first of all, there was her flowing hair,
rich and abundant, falling onto her sacred
neck; than I saw the garland on her head,
woven of all the flowers of creation,
delicate as dewy morning, light as foam;
then there was her crown, a little circle
in the middle of her forehead, like a moon
shining whitely there, and from the moon
rose up small serpents, on each side;
and above the moon, ears of corn
reminding us of all the brings to fruit.
~Apuleius, The Golden Ass

Lucius, hero of North African author Apuleius’ classic, mocks the Goddess in his youth. In punishment, she turns him into a donkey. In this form, he has adventures and misadventures, until she finally finds he has grown sensitive enough to rejoin humanity.

Apuleius’ story is all our stories. We find ourselves on earth, spirits inhabiting mortal bodies. Our task is to somehow find our way back tot he goddess who put us here. We can spurn our bodies; we can believe ourselves more spiritual than mere flesh. Or we can live a totally body-centered life, denying the spirit. Neither is sufficient.

To serve the Goddess well, we must rejoice in the earthly temple in which we find ourselves, but we must never forget to strive toward the realm of spirit. We are both body and spirit, and the goddess wants us to remember both

About The Morning Feast and – The teachings here are based on ordinary magick, the principle that the mundane and the Divine are not separate, but peacefully coexist in all things. Know Mother Earth as the ultimate healer, and learn to utilize her gifts of nature. Inside each woman is a being of wisdom, deeply connected to the phases of the moon and the tides of the sea. All we need to do is trust our innate wisdom.
