Magick, dreams, health, love, home and family In the word Monday, we can see part of the word Moon. In the romance languages such as Italian or Spanish, this day of the week is called Lunes and clearly relates to the word lunar. On Mondays, a variety of magick may be worked.

Because Monday centers on the energies of the Moon, things like psychism, dreams, feminine energy, health, success in spiritual pursuits, domestic matters, and things of family origin are especially important this day.

Newborn Blessings

Give the gift of well wishes and blessings to a newborn child with this fun bottle spell. You will need a small bottle, some narrow strips of paper, a pen with purple ink, and shiny things to add to the bottle, such as confetti, glitter, and sequins.

Light a purple candle to work by, and then, on the strips of paper, write your good wishes and blessings for the new child. You might want to include things like “a life full of wonderful adventures,” “bountiful love,” or “I wish you peace and patience.” Really any blessings will work here, as long as they are positive. Roll up the strips and plop them into the bottle. Add glitter, confetti, and other such additions until you are happy with how it looks. Seal the bottle with purple wax, and give it to the new parents.

Light and Dark Waters

Create a magical light water to aid you in positive emotional workings, weddings, and spiritual attunements. Into a two-fluid-ounce bottle, carefully add a pinch of sea salt, slivers of selenite, freshwater pearls, and fluorite gravel. Fill this bottle with water from a sacred well. Use this water whenever you need the presence of light, peace, and protection.

Create a magical dark water to aid you in negative emotional release, banishing spells, and hex work. Into a two-fluid-ounce bottle, combine a pinch of black salt, charcoal slivers, and a jet stone. Fill this bottle with black water from a cesspool, pond, or swamp. Use this water whenever you need to cope with trauma, recover from survivalism, or engage in shadow magic.

Maladay, First holyday of the Aftermath in the Discordian Calendar

If you are out of sorts today, running late, or feeling moody or clumsy, perhaps you are unwittingly celebrating Maladay, one of the holydays of the religion Discordianism. This belief system honors the goddess Discordia/Eris, known for causing the series of events that led to the siege of Troy. Try this spell to appease the goddess, today and any day discord threatens. Ground and center, and light a gold or yellow candle. Offer blessings to Eris. In a comfortable position, with eyes closed, slow your breathing and think of a happy occasion. Concentrate on that scene just long enough to feel a sense of harmony return. Extinguish the flame and go about your day. Pause every so often and send gratitude to Eris, to keep discord at bay. A golden apple is the symbol of the goddess, so be sure to eat a Golden Delicious apple with a meal or as a snack.

Upcycled Protection

Several years ago, I found myself wondering what to do with my old herbs, as rosemary followed vervain into a bucket. Then the idea of creating a protective circle around our property hit me. This is a useful way to return the herbs to Mother Nature while adding an extra layer of protection to your home, and it works with any botanicals you might have on hand. Dump them all willy-nilly into a bucket or other container, and head outside. (You could even designate a container just for their collection and add to it over time as flowers die and herbs become dated.)

To create the circle, simply walk the perimeter of your property, clockwise if possible, strewing the herbs as you go. As you walk, envision a circle of protective white light flaring up around your home. Close the circle and it is done.

Heartwings Love Notes 695: Omens

Omens, from which our word ominous comes, can be seen as a sign or message of importance. Earlier, prior to beginning an important enterprise, voyage, war campaign or journey, people would seek out a soothsayer or a temple priest or priestess who would “take the omens” to forecast the potential for the success of the effort. There were many different ways to do this. Casting bones or dice, observing the flight of birds, reading the entrails of a sacrificial animal or the smoke from incense were among many rituals of divination.

Today the temple–now more likely called a church has become a place of worship only and has gone out of the soothsaying business. However those seeking advice or foresight might consult an astrologer, a numerologist, a psychic or a reader of Tarot cards. Some might regard such things as mere superstitions. Others as a way to look into the future for guidelines as to how to proceed. Personally I prefer to make my decisions with as much information as I can get, including both logical and intuitive guidance.

When civilization was primarily centered around rural villages and farms, Halloween was considered an important time for reading omens for the future. There were countless ways to do this. Many of our Halloween customs come from the custom of trying to predict marriage. Bobbing for apples is one of these. The young man or woman who first managed to get a bite of an apple was said to be the first to marry. There are omens connected with all the holidays as well as weddings, funerals, and births.

Like many, I consider certain omens significant of good luck. I am glad to find feathers or pennies in my path. When I see double numbers on one of my digital timepieces I feel I’m headed in the right direction. Certain songs randomly heard in a store seem to me to be messages of good cheer. A flock of birds seems to mean that some sort of vigorous action will soon take place in the world around me. To me these small signals are omens, not of anything ominous in the negative sense but instead significant of a smooth path ahead.

Your home is your oasis. Through your efforts, your house or apartment can become both a private sanctuary and a welcoming, serene, and healthy place to live in and visit. An organized and comfortable home can have a calming effect on you, your family, and guests, as well as be your personal escape from the rest of the world. Creating this nurturing space isn’t difficult. Even a household that includes young children or multiple animals can be a serene and peaceful place. In just a few minutes, you can make a number of changes that can turn your home into a safe and comfortable haven that you can be proud to share with your loved ones and friends.

One way to fill your house or apartment with calming energy is to imbue it with a peaceful ambiance that nurtures all five senses. Soft lighting and soothing colors like blue, purple, and green can make a space feel warm and inviting, while pleasant and calming aromas such as lavender and vanilla can positively affect moods. Peaceful sounds, such as running water in a fountain or gentle chimes can uplift and clear the space, while clearing clutter and making the most of open space can ease internal turmoil and dispel negative feelings. The physical objects in your home as well as your home itself can retain the energy of previous owners or creators. You can give your household’s energy a lift by visualizing white light surrounding our home, symbolically sweeping out residual energy, or smudging your home with cleansing sage.

The changes you make to your home can be as unique as you are and may involve utilization of space, lighting, new furniture, decorating, feng shui, or ritual. But what you do is not as important as being clear in your intention to set up your household as a soothing and refreshing place to be. Make your home a place of comfort, and you will feel nurtured and cared for whenever you are there.

To his surprise, Roger suddenly saw a face other than his staring back at him from his bathroom mirror. He whirled around. Who might have come in while he was shaving? No one was there. He turned back to the mirror. Reflected there next to him was an expressionless older male face with wise eyes. This was no one he’d ever met or knew.

He shook his head and ran his hand through his thinning hair. “Who are you?”

No reply. He heard no words, nor did the lips move.

He went into his bedroom and looked in the mirror over his bureau. The same face; then he looked into the coat closet mirror, only to see him again.

“Doesn’t make any sense,“ he said aloud.

“What doesn’t?” His wife Pam asked coming into the room. “Why are you going from mirror to mirror?”

“Just look into one and tell me if you see anything unusual.“

She went to the hall closet, looked, shook her head and then checked the one in the bathroom. “Ok, what’s the catch?”

“Didn’t you see him?“

“See what?” She looked again. “No, just me. Oh dear, I hope I’m not putting on weight.”

“Maybe he only appears when it’s me who’s looking.“

“What are you talking about?”

“An unknown face in the mirror but no one’s standing behind me.“

Pam looked at Roger. “Are you ok? Is this some kind of mid life crisis brought on by stress?”

He tugged at the neck of his blue sweater. “I’m fine. I’m just seeing another face in the mirror besides mine.”

“Maybe you’re having hallucinations. Stress can do that.“

“Not when I’m shaving. That’s not a usual time to imagine seeing what isn’t there.”

“Is there a usual time?“ Concerned, she smiled. “Maybe it’s that new medicine your doctor gave you.”

“That’s for my knee.“

“Still, you don’t know what goes into those expensive drugs.”

“It’s never happened before so I can’t really tell you but I’ll let you know if it persists.“ He reached to kiss her.

“If I were you I wouldn’t make light of this. For all you know you could be having a breakdown.”

“What are you talking about?“

“Delusional behavior. Seeing what isn’t there and thinking it is.” Nervously she smoothed the front of her slacks and then stuck her hands into her pockets.

He sighed. “Maybe we should just forget this whole thing and have breakfast. Forget I ever said anything.”

“How can I?“

“Well I’m not going to think about it,” Roger said. Then he went into the kitchen and made them both cheese omelets.

The next day at work as Roger washed his hands in the men’s room he looked up into the mirror above the basin and saw that same older, wise face. Quietly he asked, “Why?”

But instead of there being a spoken response, a hand extended out to him through the mirror. Ok he thought and clutched it. Then his body felt as though it were moving through something.

Resisting panic he shut his eyes. When he opened them he was looking back through the mirror into the men’s room.

His heart beat faster. He felt faint. Suddenly he was back in the men’s room.

“How’d that happen?“ He asked aloud. “Maybe Pam’s right. Maybe I should see a shrink.”

The face in the mirror smiled and shook his head no. Then it disappeared. Roger went back to his office and collapsed into his chair.

He decided not to tell Pam. Why worry her. Over the next few days the face did not appear. Then Sunday morning he saw it again looking at him through the bathroom mirror.

He closed the door and faced the mirror. “Maybe we should have a talk,” he said. “Mind telling me what this is all about?”

Again a hand was extended. Reluctantly, but too curious not to he took it and again found himself transported to the other side of the mirror.

“I’m not going to try to figure this out.“

“Wise,” came a voice. He felt his back patted. Then an object was put into his hand and his fingers were pressed around it. It was something wrapped in tissue paper.

His head began to spin. Next thing he knew he was back in his bathroom still clutching the object.

He couldn’t contain himself. He had to share this experience with Pam. She was in the kitchen. Tears filled his eyes. He embraced her and started babbling.

Pam looked at him. She noticed his hand. “What are you holding?”

He opened his palm. In it was something wrapped in soft white tissue paper. He handed it to Pam. Even though it did not seem to make any sense a part of him knew everything was all right.

Pam unwrapped the tissue, threw her arms around Roger and started kissing him. “Oh you wonderful, darling man, thank you, thank you. Until this moment I thought you had forgotten our anniversary. How wrong I was. But how could you ever have afforded this?”

He stared at the heavy gold ring in her hand.

Her eyes lit up. “Where did you ever find anything this magnificent? If that’s a real fire opal this ring is priceless.”

He held her close and whispered. “Someone on the other side of the mirror put it in my hand after I was pulled through it.”

She laughed. “I’ll figure it out when I see the credit card bill, so why not just tell me now?”

“Like I said I went through the mirror. But next time I’ll ask him where he got it.”

She giggled. “Oh you’re such a joker.”

He went back into the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror but no one awaited him. After close to fifteen minutes he called out, “Where are you.“

“In the bedroom on my laptop,” Pam called back. “I just Skyped my sister and showed her your gift. She said it looked other worldly.”

He shrugged and came into the bedroom. “She’s got the right idea.”

“Well, I can see you’re not going to tell me anything more, so I guess I’ll just say thank you, darling and wait until I see the bill.“ She kissed him again.

Several days later he saw the same face in his bathroom mirror.

Roger felt reassured. He waited for an arm to extend toward him. But it didn’t. Instead, for a few more moments the man smiled, and then he vanished from the mirror.
