What I Did on My Summer Vacation
Spell Date: Sunday, June 11, 2017

If the school year has not yet ended in your community, it soon will. One ritual many partake of this time of year is arranging a summer vacation getaway. It may be as elaborate as a trip to another country or as simple as a staycation in your own backyard. How about something in between? Daytrips to local amusement parks or historical sites are good options. Explore websites, rent books from your local library, and/or purchase vacation guidebooks. Be sure to include your partner/family in your decision-making.

Consider something educational for that all-important back-to-school essay. Request guidance from the appropriate sources. Water sprites assist with beach and lake activities, fire and earth gods and goddesses help with camping and hiking, and air spirits assist with plane travel.

Place some earth in a bowl next to a small bowl of water. Light a candle. Gently blow across the bowls. Bow to the elements. You are all set to begin planning.

Intention Lemon Cleanser
Spell Date: Saturday, June 10, 2017

Super-clean your kitchen or bathroom with this simple recipe. Focusing your intention on a clean, calm, healthy environment, mix one tablespoon lemon juice with ¼ cup baking soda. I use bottled lemon juice when making this, but I think that you’d get a stronger lemon scent if you used fresh lemon juice.

As many of us know, baking soda is a fairly natural, gentle abrasive. I use it to scrub my sink all the time. Lemon juice serves as an added cleanser, bringing insecticidal, antimicrobial, and deodorizing properties. Add in the focused magical intent and you’ve got a great cleanser.

Celebrate Yourself
Spell Date: Friday, June 9, 2017

Too often we get busy and forget what is most important. This morning, pause, breathe, smile, and choose to celebrate yourself. What do you like best about your body? What is your strongest character trait? What are you accomplished at? Where do you succeed? What brings you joy? Celebrate your body by wearing your favorite clothes. Celebrate your health by making a delicious breakfast.

Celebrate your success at work with a small treat packed in your lunch. Make plans for a special dinner out. Go alone to a restaurant or let someone take you and ask them to celebrate you too. As you are served, say thank you and receive nourishment. And after dinner, do something that brings you joy: go dancing, walk by the water, read a book, visit friends, or spend time in the garden.

Affirm:
“I am worthy of celebrating. I celebrate my complete self.”

Give Thanks to Jupiter
Spell Date: Thursday, June 8, 2017

Thursday is ruled by Jupiter, king of the Roman gods, the Norse Thor, and the Greek Zeus. Along with Juno and Minerva, Jupiter was one of the great protectors of the Roman state until it adopted Christianity. In astrology, Jupiter gives us growth, plenty, and good fortune. Thursday is a day to give thanks for the good in your life.

Spend several minutes with paper and pen and make a list of ten good things in your life. Add ten more things. Then lay your list on your altar and say:

“Father Jupiter, bringer of good fortune, I thank you for all the good in my life.”

Read your list aloud. Read slowly and take time to consider each item on the list. Say:

“Great Jupiter, be with me and bless me as long as I live.”

Burn your list in a fireproof container (such as a small cauldron) and keep the ashes in the cauldron just inside your door.

Speak to Me, My Muse
Spell Date: Wednesday, June 7, 2017

Sometimes we just can’t get the creative juices flowing. I like to go to my muse for inspiration.

Euterpe is the muse of song and music. Erato is the muse of lyric poetry, while Calliope is the muse of epic poetry. Clio is the muse of history. Terpsichore is the muse of dance, while Thalia represents comic theater and Melpomene is tragic theater. Polyhymnia is the muse of hymns and Urania is the muse of astronomy.

I write, and while poetry is not exactly my forte, Clio has been a muse to me in the past. For all things there is a history, whether it is fiction or reality. If I am working ritual, Polyhmnia is the one I call on.

These muses provide us with sparks of interest and inspiration. Their fields of expertise can be expanded to fit your needs. Just whisper to them and then listen.

Mindful Breath Meditation
Spell Date: Tuesday, June 6, 2017

Meditation is the art of clearing your mind and relaxing your body. It removes negative energy, stress, and distractions. It gathers your own energy toward productive ends. Meditation is a good regular practice and is especially helpful before performing spells or rituals.

Emptying the mind completely is very difficult for most people, so even though it’s a famous method of meditation, it’s not always the best choice. Everyone breathes, so breath meditation is an excellent starting point. Begin by noticing your breath. Concentrate on the sound of air moving. Feel what part of your body expands and contracts with each breath. Ideally your belly should move—that’s deep breathing.

Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, counting each breath as you do so. Imagine ten breaths filling your root chakra. Then do ten breaths for your sacral chakra. Continue up to the crown chakra. Complete your meditation with a good stretch.

A Magickal Quotes Jar
Spell Date: Monday, June 5, 2017

Imagine a jar full of wisdom: a jar filled with quotes and inspirations to be delved into at exactly the right moment. You can create this jar!

You’ll need a wide-mouth Mason jar with a lid, paper and pen, and scissors. Begin by writing down quotations, phrases, poems, invocations, prayers, or other short writings that influence your own magickal practices. After writing each one, cut the piece of paper to fit, fold it into a small shape, and add it to the jar. Consider words not just from magickal folks but perhaps also from astronomers, theologians, mythologists, and other learned people—and from you, too! For best results, add new materials to the jar regularly.

Once your jar is at least half full, dip into it when you need inspiration. You can also use it for divination: when you need a question answered, meditate on it, then pull a paper from the jar and consider how your question has been answered.

Heartwings Love Notes 780: A Rare Day In June

Heartwings says, “Good weather or not, June is a pretty month.”

As I drove around doing errands my eyes kept being drawn to the beautiful blossoming trees and bushes on the local lawns and roadsides in town. The green grass, the freshness of the leaves, and the tidy gardens spoke eloquently of the loveliness of the beginning of summer. It is nearly time for the solstice. June 21 will bring the onset of the long hot bright days of June, July and part of August.

When I was a child I could hardly wait for these wonderful summer days: free time, swimming, sitting in my favorite tree reading, all these activities and more awaited me. As an elder, I confess that I cringe at the prospect of these days. The heat of the summer hours robs me of my ability to think and makes it harder for me to sleep at night. I lurk indoors with the air conditioner going, hurrying out of the house for an exercise walk either first thing in the morning or later on toward sunset.

Too, the sun is not as benign as it used to be. The thinning of the atmosphere due to global warming has increased the potency of the sun’s rays, necessitating cover-ups and hats, not to mention sunscreen and sun glasses. The “healthy tan” we all used to crave is less desirable now. I remember when I was in college taking time from classes to sit out on the porch roof where we could “work on our tans,” as we used to say. The idea was to increase the effect of the sun with tanning lotion rather than block it with sunscreen.

Even so, there are some delights that nothing can spoil. Yesterday walking past a wild rose bramble my nose caught the sweet scent of the tiny white blossoms snuggled into some trees by the side of the road. I stopped and inhaled, taking time to smell these very special June treats. The present moment joy is what matters, not the prospect of discomfort, and I do appreciate the air conditioner. Indeed, what is so rare as a day in June when it brings me gifts like these. TashaHal@aol.com

Domestic Tranquility: Tie One On

I was sitting at the coffee table working on a collage. Tasha breezed in and handed me a fancy clothing catalogue. She pointed. “Do you like this blue cotton dress?” The banner across the page proclaimed “everything on this page 50% off.”
I shrugged. “Something about it looks familiar.”
She looked at the collages spread across the coffee table. Pointing to one she said, “You’ve been working on that for a long time.”
I nodded. “One of these days I’ll figure out how to finish it.” I handed her back the catalogue.
“It’s a real bargain at twelve dollars,” she said.
“No. I’d charge more for it than that.”
She smiled and pointed to the catalogue. “I meant this dress.”
“Oh,” I said. A image from when I was a kid popped into my mind. “That’s the same blue dress I remember from a ‘1940’s magazine ad for a washday detergent. It shows a mom standing with a basket of laundry on her hip, looking victorious.”
She made a face. “Oh well, never mind. I had thought it looked rather summery and attractive, something I’d wear out to dinner with you when we’re in Maine.” She shook her head. “But scratch that! I wouldn’t buy anything that reminds you of a woman bringing in her laundry.”
I hadn’t wanted to hurt her feelings and for twelve dollars who needs to quibble. “Good practical blue dress,” I smiled. “Nice to wear out shopping, or when you’re cooking or even when you’re cleaning the stove.”
“That’s all right.” She folded the magazine
“Now I remember! In the ad she looked very happy. I’m sure if you wore it out to dinner no one in the restaurant would remember that a woman wore that exact dress nearly seventy years ago bringing in her wash.”
She sighed audibly. “Never mind, I have no intention of ever buying anything that reminds you of someone with their laundry.” She looked again at the page. “Yes I suppose one could wear it doing housework. It seems practical and comfortable, even though I had thought of it as a bit glamorous.” She turned to go back to the kitchen.
“Wait, if you want to buy something special for the trip…” I rummaged through my cuttings looking for a picture of a particular sheer dress. “Maybe you could splurge on something diaphanous like what Rita Hayworth wore in Salome when she did that lurid dance.”
She laughed. “Yes I’m sure you’d enjoy seeing me in something like that, but somehow I really don’t think that would be suitable for Maine. For one thing it gets cool there at night and I’d be bit chilly.”
“People wear hardly anything anymore.” I tried assuring her. “And Maine has become quite the place to be for skimpy summer attire.”
“Maybe on a Caribbean cruise,” she said with a tone of finality.
I felt like I might need to say something tactful. “You’d look superb in something like that in Maine or for that matter anywhere’s else.”
She smiled. “It is kind of you to say so. In that case I can see you in a tie, jacket and starched white shirt sitting across from me in someplace posh in York or Camden.”
I laughed. “I hardy ever wear a tie and jacket.”
“Yes I know. But if I wore the sort of dress you have in mind you’d have to. Otherwise you wouldn’t feel comfortable trying to talk the chief of police out of arresting me for indecent exposure.” She leaned over the table and looked at my collage more closely. “That’s coming along nicely.”
I shook my head. “Believe me you’d never get arrested. Not in that dress. But are you hinting that you’d like seeing me in a tie more often?”
She grinned. “Oh, I think that’s a wonderful idea “As I remember you never wore one to church, not that any of the other men did either.”
“We’d have to be going to some pretty spiffy events for me to feel comfortable dressed up that way.”
She waved that off. “Just wear one here, around the apartment.”
“You mean tie one on over a polo or tee shirt.”
She smiled. “Doing that might have a profound effect on your creativity.”
I shook my head and laughed. “Turn me into a stuffed shirt, dry and boring.”
“Not at all! Think what creative changes you’d inspire wearing your good three piece suit.” She smiled.
I frowned. “I don’t think so.”
She grinned. I could tell she was having fun. “Of course if you dared to do something that different you might single handedly evoke a whole new trend in men’s fashion. And as an artist, too! I can just imagine all the publicity you’d get. This could be the beginning of something new and very big.”
I shook my head. “You’re not serious.”
She leaned forward eagerly. “Of course I am. You could call it the Tie One On School. I’ll take pictures of you wearing a tie, rummaging through mountains of clutter seeking out the perfect image. As you’ve said so many times all it takes for an artist to gain international acclaim is something outrageous, out of the ordinary. And wearing a necktie over a tee shirt might really work.”
“I suppose.” I nodded, “yes, but how about I forgo the tee shirt and just walk around the house bare-chested like Brando did in Streetcar Named Desire with a tie dangling from around my neck.”
She smiled and shook her head. “He wasn’t bare-chested. Not back in the ’50’s. He wore a torn tee shirt that brought out his animal nature.”
“Tell you what; at the beach in Maine you wear something skimpy and I’ll go bare-chested with a tie. That would make an incredible fashion statement. Maybe we’d even end up on YouTube. Both our careers would definitely surge.”
“Surge to the bottom of the sea,” she giggled. “Come sit at the table with me and we’ll have some tea.” She stood and I followed after her. Then I stopped, turned and looked again at the collage I was having such a hard time finishing. In my mind’s eye I saw it swathed in cuttings from neckties. Adding the cloth could give it a whole new perspective.
Tasha poured us each a cup of tea. Then she picked up the catalogue, shook her head and tossed it into the trash.

Spiritual Work: A Few Easy Spells
By MS Bruja Carolina

While it is known that I am a supporter of tradition and secrecy in Afro-Latin Magic being completely respected, and I would never reveal spells that belong only to initiates of any religion of the Diaspora, we also have plenty of what would be considered Folk Magic, and that almost anyone with a little experience with Magic can perform. These spells were first published on my Newsletter in 2012, and come from my learning with my Madrina’s Lukumi community; I’ve re-written the post quite a bit, adding much more content, and honestly, because my English is much better now :).

While I understand that most of my readers are already practitioners of any of the religions of the Diaspora, and will be familiar with most terms, there is a significant percentage that comes from European-based Paganism traditions. I have also added some notes directed at them that I thought helpful, specially about ingredients that may not be of regular use to them.

)0(
Spell For Good Luck And Protection
Materials: a square of white cloth, white thread, three garlic cloves, a pinch of Spearmint, a pinch of Parsley.
Make a small bag filling the cloth with the herbs and garlic, and tie it with the white thread, making seven knots. Go to seven places where you can find Holy Water* and, without being noticed, dip the bag in the water asking Obatala to give the amulet power for luck and protection. Do not let anyone see your amulet, and keep it hidden always.
*The water does not need to be Catholic Holy Water, of course. It can even be water from springs or fountains, as long as they hold true spiritual power to you. Also, the pilgrimage to those seven places does not have to be done in one day, but the amulet won’t work until it’s done.

)0(
A Spell For Attraction (Of Any Kind)
While this spell is used mostly for attracting a partner, it can be used for other means too; to attract a raise, a promotion, better relations, peace in the family, etc. It can be recharged every full moon, and the colour of the candle can be adapted to the specific purpose of the spell.
Materials: a red candle, a glass bowl, a charm made of pure silver (a coin, a cross, a medal, or something similar – shape is not important, but the material is), Holy Water, orange blossom water, Florida Water*, basil juice**.
Under the light of the full Moon, stick the red candle in the centre of the bowl, and then add all the liquids, about a shotglass of each. Place the charm inside this mix, and pray to the full Moon to attract whatever you need. Let the bowl outside all night, leaving the candle on until it burns off by itself. In the morning, take the charm and wear it as a pendant, or inside a fabric bag next to your skin; the mix of waters can also be used as a personal attraction perfume for a few days.
* Again, the Holy Water does not need to be from a Christian Church, and can be blessed by yourself. Both orange blossom water and Florida Water can usually be found at Botanicas, and should not be substituted by homemade ones, because honestly, the recipes going around on the Internet are a joke.
**Basil juice is made by liquifying fresh leaves and stalks of Basil, by hand or in a juicer/blender.
Remember safety when leaving magical works outside all night. If you cannot assure safety, leave it outside, but turn off the candle when you finish. No Spirit wants you to be in danger!

)0(
A Spell To Break A Stagnant Situation
In this spell, I am using the word Potencia, that literally means just Power, but for us in Maria Lionza’s religion, it means the Spirit that owns your head – that can be an Orisha if you are a Lukumi, a Lwa if you practise Haitian Voodoo, and so on. This is not exactly the same as a Patron Deity – there are many subtleties that are lost in translation, and that change from practise to practise.
Materials: A new and unused white handkerchief; five copper coins of the same currency and amount, three candies, seven peppercorns, white paper, green ink/marker, white thread, honey.
Write your petition to your Potencia on the paper with the green ink, and place it on the handkerchief. Place also the pennies, the candies and the pepper seeds above it and, using the thread, tie the handkerchief to make a small packet. Take the bag to your Potencia’s sacred place, feed it with plenty of honey, and leave the place without looking back. At home, light a candle to your Potencia for three days – the candle can be white, or in their representing colour.

)0(
A Spell To Protect The Household
Materials: 2 whole coconuts, eight white taper candles and one white pillar candle, rum, honey, cascarilla*, cleansing/protecting oil.
Starting on a Monday, rub a whole coconut with cascarilla, rum and your favourite cleansing oil and place it on a bowl behind your front door. For eight days, you will place a candle on the top of the coconut, also anointed with cleansing oil and cascarilla, and you will offer it to Eleggua. You don’t need to let the candle burn completely if you can’t, but it has to be renewed every day. Each day, ask him to protect the household against enemies, envy and negativity.
On the eighth day, take the coconut (remove wax and bowl) to the woods, and leave it at a crossroad. It is extremely important that you don’t look back when you leave, or you will offend the Spirit. Back home, cut the other coconut in two, and mix the coconut water with lots of rum and honey. Fill both halves of the coconut with that mixture, and offer it to Eleggua along with the pillar candle. Burn it for three days, to thank him for his protection. On the fourth day, you can throw all remains away.
*Cascarilla is a cleansing and blessing staple in Afro-Latin magic, similar to white chalk. My advice is to get it at a Botanica, because despite what is said online, it is NOT just powdered eggshell. Powdered eggshell has its own value, have no doubt of that, but Cascarilla is actually a very complex recipe.

The Weight of Objects
By Madisyn Taylor

We hold onto material objects because we think they make us feel secure, when in reality they are cluttering our lives.
In life, we tend to have an easier time acquiring possessions than we do getting rid of them. Just as we harbor emotional baggage that is difficult to let go of, our lives can tend to be filled with material objects that we may feel compelled to hold on to. Most people are not conscious of how much they own and how many of their possessions are no longer adding value to their life. They fiercely hold on to material objects because this makes them feel secure or comfortable. While it’s true that the ownership of “stuff” can make you feel good for awhile, it seldom satisfies the deep inner longings that nearly everyone has for fulfillment and satisfaction. It is only when we are ready to let go of our baggage and be vulnerable that it becomes possible to recognize the emotional hold that our possessions can have on us.

It’s not uncommon to hold on to material objects because we are attached to them or fear the empty spaces that will remain if we get rid of them. Giving away the souvenirs from a beloved voyage may feel like we are erasing the memory of that time in our life. We may also worry that our loved ones will feel hurt if we don’t keep the gifts they’ve given us. It’s easy to convince ourselves that unused possessions might come in handy someday or that parting with them will cause you emotional pain. However, when your personal space is filled with objects, there is no room for anything new to enter and stay in your life. Your collection of belongings may “protect” you from the uncertainties of an unknown future while keeping you stuck in the past. Holding on to unnecessary possessions often goes hand in hand with holding on to pain, anger, and resentment, and letting go of your material possessions may help you release emotional baggage.

When you make a conscious decision to fill your personal space with only the objects that you need or bring you joy, your energy level will soar. Clearing your personal space can lead to mental clarity and an improved memory. As you learn to have a more practical and temporary relationship to objects, positive changes will happen, and you’ll have space to create the life that you desire.

Does Himalayan Salt Really Work?
By Holistic Experiment

Himalayan Salt contains approximately 84 minerals and produces negative ions that combat positive ions in order to reduce stress and fatigue, leaving the user feeling relaxed and refreshed.

It’s often said that Himalayan salt is good for asthma, eczema, psoriasis, acne, allergies, sinusitis, bronchitis, as well as other respiratory illnesses. It can boost the immune system and have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial purposes.

People have benefited from natural salt cave therapy, or speleotherapy, since 1843. On the other hand, halotherapy is the type of therapy that is above ground and is done in a man-made cave. This type of therapy provides a light that helps create a stress-free environment; the floor is covered in fine to medium course grounded salt and is not only warm but also several inches deep. Once you breathe the salty air, the molecules break down in the lungs and releases the negative ions. This type of therapy usually lasts 45-60 minutes and costs about $20-50, depending on the location.

Himalayan Salt Therapy at Home

There are hundred of techniques or products that one can easily use that has Himalayan salt. One can easily add this salt to the bath, use Pink Himalayan Salt soap and or deodorant, and can make Himalayan sole to use every single day to detox, boost immunity, balance hormones, improve thyroid function, etc.

There is a technique were the user can buy 25-50 pounds of salt and a queen-sized sheet or comforter that can be put on top of a bathtub after thoroughly dying it with a towel. The user stands inside the tub with clean, white cotton socks and if you get tired of standing, put a pillow on top of the salt or sit on the side of the bathtub. The user can spend up to an hour or so relaxing and once it’s done, one can easily scoop the salt back into a tight-sealed bucket and store it in a cool, dry area.

Another technique is putting Himalayan salt in a salt inhaler and as one inhales, the moisture from the air absorbs the salt particles and then they enter the respiratory system.

The most well-known product is the pink Himalayan salt lamp and I decided to put it to the test. Overall, it’s been a good experience, my asthma and sinus is somewhat controlled and I haven’t gotten as sick as I normally do. The only issue I have with this is that, since I live in a tropical island, it “sweats” a lot, so if you live in a hot and/or humid place, put a bowl under your salt lamp and you won’t have any problems.
