Honor the Fool

The Fool, the Sacred Clown, the Trickster—this mythic figure has many names and many faces but appears in cultures around the world. Sometimes male, sometimes female, the Trickster often crosses gender lines to express some combination of both. The Trickster cracks jokes and breaks rules. Likewise, most cultures have a Day of Misrule or other occasion for turning everything upside down. All Fools’ Day or April Fools’ Day is one such example.
Today, honor the Fool by doing things differently than usual. You might dress in clashing colors. Try talking in Pig Latin or saying the opposite of everything you mean. Talk to people you typically ignore. Read a book or watch a movie about trickster figures. Tell stories about tricksters such as Robin Hood or Coyote. (Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner count too.) Have fun with it!
Don’t try to do formal magic today. It will just go awry.

The Nurturing Log
Spell Date: Friday, March 31, 2017
Oak trees are sacred in Druidic tradition. Their wood is dense and strong, able to last a long time. In the forest, fallen oaks often become “nurse logs,” which help new seedlings to sprout.
In the garden, logs can help retain moisture during dry times so you don’t have to water your plants as often. One method is to dig a hole deep enough for the logs to rest about a foot below the surface. Another is to lay the logs on the ground and build a raised bed over them. Cover the logs with a layer of grass clippings, fill the rest of the space with soil or compost, then water thoroughly. As you work, repeat this charm:
“Tree of the Druids, tree of the gods,
Work your slow magic under the clods.
Hold in the water, banish the drought;
Nourish these plants day in and night out.”

I Affirm
Spell Date: Thursday, March 30, 2017
Make today about personal growth and generosity by using an affirmation ritual. The repetition of an affirmation is useful to reprogram your way of thinking. You will need a journal, a special pen of your choosing, and perhaps a blue candle to burn while you work. You’ll need to write your affirmation at least fifteen to twenty times a day, focusing on what you are doing. Start with something like this:
“I strive toward higher things, toward better things.”
After three days, move on to an affirmation that focuses more specifically on what you want to work on, always using a positive I am or I can sort of statement, such as:
“I am more patient with myself.”
Or perhaps:
“I am more confident when dealing with clients.”
Give each affirmation at least a week to set in.

On this day in 1848, Niagara Falls ran dry due to ice blocking the river. Personalize this day by looking inward and discovering what may be blocking you in any area of your life. No matter our profession, we all create and thus we all stumble upon an occasional block.
Start the day with a spell or blessing of your life and ask for unblocking, then be open to receive the message in any form. This may require some imagination; simply remain open in mind, heart, and spirit. Do not become discouraged, as it may take some time. Play soothing music and light your favorite scent of incense. Conjure an image of your block encased in ice. See the ice breaking apart. Creativity flows! Say:
“Blocked no more,
My creativity flows
Like the falls of Niagara.”

A Spring Abundance Spell
Spell Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2017
Now that trees and shrubs are beginning to show signs of growth, it’s the perfect time to perform this ritual. You’ll need a pliable stem about two to three feet long from a tree or shrub such as a willow or forsythia. Begin by weaving the stem into a small wreath. As you weave, say:
“The winds of winter are a thing of the past. Spring, I welcome you at last. Growth and abundance are drawn to me. Now I’m blessed with prosperity.”
As you weave the stem, visualize growth and abundance being bound to you. When you’re done, hang the wreath on a branch of the tree or shrub from which it came. Thank the tree or shrub. You’ve created some positive karma, which will increase the flow of abundance coming to you.

The dance of the heavens this month is active. Besides the Aries Sun’s segue into Taurus on the 19th, Mercury, Mars, and Venus all change signs. Then on the 9th Mercury, on the 6th, Saturn and Pluto on the 20th all turn retrograde. Retrograde Venus now turns direct on the 15th. With Pluto at a virtual standstill all month, change and upheaval may be mostly below the surface. With Mercury in retrograde much will come up for review, retooling and return. At that time I often hear from people I haven’t heard from for a while.
Beginning the month in Aries, the Sun oversees innovation and startups. In Taurus work begun continues, practicality is in the air. Mercury begins in earthy Taurus then backs into innovative Aries on the 20th for a review of what has been begun. Venus, retrograde in gentle Pisces seeks connections with the past, continues in direct motion to find mystical connections then on the 28th dances into April and craves newness. Saturn slows into retrograde the 5th, urging greater care with structure, while Pluto slows change and renewal all month.
So while April is a month for beginnings, they are likely to be of a different nature, more about affirming direction, chasing details to solidify what has been begun, and allowing for a slow but steady building toward a climax that could come as late as the fall-possibly around the equinox. This is not to say that nothing will happen, of course, only that the sum of the parts may be delayed. Meanwhile it is vital to practice redoing, restoring, reviewing, reforming, replacing, revising and so forth during the retrograde period, ending May 3. Needless to say this is a poor time to purchase anything you do not actually need if you can possibly avoid it.
The Full Moon in Libra shines on Passover, on the 11th of April. The following two weeks will be good times to beautify your surroundings by removing whatever obscures that beauty and instead revealing what has been hidden. The New Moon in Taurus shines on the 26th, when it will be your opportunity to initiate music lessons, new craft projects, garden plans and refurbishments, and polish up your jewelry. Major aspects are few this month, so the emphasis on any one-especially the ones involving Pluto or Uranus may be greater.
Days to be mindful of a potential for stress include the 6th when Saturn turns retrograde, 7th and 8th a Venus/Saturn Square, 9th when Mercury turns retrograde, 20th Pluto turns retrograde, 21st Venus/Saturn square. Days to enjoy good vibrations include the 5th and 6th Mars/Pluto Trine, 7th Sun/Jupiter opposition, 14th Sun/Uranus conjunction-great for surprises! Heartwings Love Notes 770: Spring is a Back and Forth Season
Heartwings says, “Hot one day, cold the next spring is a season of surprises.”
It always makes me laugh when someone says, “What’s happened to spring? It’s winter again!” That’s what spring is: a back and forth time of year. One day it’s lovely out, the next it snows. It’s difficult to make plans. Once many years ago my spontaneous father decided to give an Easter egg hunt in the large house he had inherited from my great aunt Alice. He invited every member of a large extended family and told them all to come at one on Easter for the party. Then he went to Maine, intending to return that morning to host the party.
At eight AM it commenced to snow furiously. By twelve it had pretty much stopped where I lived, however my father, having been snowed in was still in Maine. I was faced with hosting a party for a large group of people I had never met not to mention hiding the eggs, providing the food, and being gracious. I called a friend and together we managed to pull off the party. It was quite an adventure. I was rather put out with my father who very cavalierly said, “Oh, I knew you could handle it.” Many times since I have been faced with spontaneous hosting and he was right, it’s no problem for me.
Chinese fried rice works wonders as a quick meal for such occasions. You must have the simple ingredients on hand; I usually do. The secret of Chinese fried rice is that it is made with leftover rice. It is very quick to fix and popular with most. To serve four, Use a cup of rice per person, one egg, half a cup of frozen peas, half cup of chopped onion, half a cup of chopped celery, and 2 Tablespoons soy sauce or Dr. Bronner’s Mineral broth. If you have any leftover chicken, or extra firm tofu chop a half a cup of that too. 2 or 3 sliced cloves and 2 or 3 Tablespoons ginger in thin strips is good too.
Take a half a cup large or extra large shrimp per person from the freezer, and thaw briefly in warm water. Peel if necessary and line up on a cookie sheet. Bake at 425 for 5 or so minutes. Scramble the egg without any extra liquid and fry in some oil or butter. Set aside. In a large frying pan, sauté the ginger, garlic, onion and celery until transparent. Stir in the rice and cook 5 minutes. Add the peas, the egg, broken up, tofu, chicken and shrimp. Stir in the soy sauce and cook 5 more minutes. Voila, Dinner is served.

The Ouija Board
Early that evening, when Harry got home from his store he walked into the kitchen. Bessie and Lisa Rackatanski were sitting across from each other at the kitchen table. Between them was the vintage ouija board from his boyhood.
“Bessie,” he said, “Did you find that in the attic?”
Bessie nodded. “I was looking for something up there and came across it. I mentioned it to Lisa and she wanted to play with it, so here we are…”
Harry thought Lisa was looking better now that the shaved side of her head had begun growing back.
The redness in her cheeks matched her sweater. Ignoring Harry, she looked intently at the Ouija board. “Will he come to me?”
The planchet moved to yes.
Lisa sighed. “Any idea when?” The planchet was still.
Bessie patted her hand. “You’ll just have to play it by ear,”
Harry smiled at Lisa. “My brother Barney would always ask the board for winning baseball and football scores. He made a connection with a dead bookie who would give him tips on which horse to play at the track.”
Lisa raised her eyebrows. “Really! They can do that?””
. Harry nodded. “But after a while the spirit ceased being accurate– sometimes even dead wrong costing Barney money. Finally he decided it wasn’t a sure thing and lost interest.”
Her eyes were wide. “You mean I could win the lottery?”
Harry laughed. “Could happen.”
She checked her watch and looked again at the ouija board. Bessie wondered if she wasn’t feeling as though she were finished with it.
“Here,” Bessie said putting it back in its box. “Take it home and have some fun with it.”
Lisa seemed pleased. “Thank you. Do you think I could connect with someone?”
Bessie nodded. “Why not. They’re lots of dead guys out there always willing to chew the fat.”
Lisa’s eyes widened. She raised her eyes heavenward and then looked at Bessie. “You mean maybe me and a spirit could become close.”
“Most likely,” Bessie said. “Works for millions of people every day.”
Harry checked his watch. It was dinnertime and he was hungry. “I guess you got good messages then.”
“Oh Harry,” Bessie said enthusiastically. “Lisa is going to meet a tall dark stranger who will sweep her off her feet. That message came through three times.”
Lisa grinned and nodded.
Harry shrugged. “I guess it depends upon whether you want to be swept away or not.”
“Bessie laughed. “Harry every woman thinks she wants to be swept away sometime in her life.”
“But best not in a leaky rowboat,” he chuckled.
Lisa Rackatansky sighed. Her smile was bittersweet. “I admit it. I wouldn’t mind. I’m sorry my husband’s alleged lover turned out to be a cross dresser but nonetheless that still makes it my turn.” She lowered her voice and looked at Bessie. “Haven’t you ever wanted a wild beast to steal you away and carry you off into the unknown?”
Bessie smiled “Oh Lisa I’ve got Harry for that. He’s wild enough for me–as long as he doesn’t throw out his back.”
“Might be just what you need, Lisa.” He smiled politely, cleared his throat and consulted his watch in an obvious manner.
Bessie tore several pages from a pad and handed them to Lisa. “Here’s the messages I wrote down for you ‘Three times,’ Bessie read. ‘Deep love will find you. You shall have that which you wish.’ And then it kept repeating to go buy new lingerie.”
“I wish I knew when,” she said in a small voice.”
Bessie shrugged. ” For your sake I hope relatively soon.”
Lisa sighed. “This is so exciting. Here I was ready to throw in the towel and swear off men completely and this wonderful spirit tells me I’ll be getting exactly what I’ve always wanted.”
She picked up the box with the Ouija board, hugged Bessie, and left.
Toward eleven as they were getting ready for bed the phone rang. Harry looked at it and yawned. “Let it ring.”
But Bessie shook her head. She picked up the phone, listened for a few moments then whispered to Harry. “It’s Lisa. Something’s terribly wrong. Oh dear,” she said. After several moments there was a flurry of “Oh dear’s.”
“No Lisa this is not supposed to happen. And I urge you never to let this spirit back in your bedroom. I never heard of such a thing, forcefully urging you to divorce Cy. Not a very decent person whether or not he’s deceased. But why are you crying? You say the spirit pushed you around the bedroom and told you pack up and move out tonight. But Lisa it’s that’s terrible.”
There was a pause. Bessie looked at Harry in horror. “The spirit helped you throw your chaise lounge out of your second floor bedroom window. I’m putting this on speaker phone so Harry can hear it too.”
“Can you hear us Lisa? Now Harry’s listening too.”
Between sobs Lisa said, “Cy’s so upset. He said we’re not insured for someone throwing a chaise through an upstairs window and he thinks it could cost us as much as several thousand dollars for repairs.”
“Oh dear,” Bessie said.
“Cy’s on his way over to your house now. He’s bringing back the ouija board. I think it scares him. He said he doesn’t want it in the house. I’m so sorry Bessie. I’m just feeling terribly confused.”
Harry couldn’t help but wonder how she mustered the strength to throw her chaise lounge out a window.
A car pulled into their driveway.
“I think Cy’s here,” Bessie said. “We’ll talk more in the morning.”
They went downstairs. Holding a plastic bag as though it were too hot to handle, Cy climbed out of his car. Harry opened the door and smiled.
“”Please give this back to your wife.” He held out the bag.
From the doorway Bessie said. “Lisa just called. I’m sorry she had that awful experience.”
He shook his head. Then he turned and walked to his car. He looked at them with a sour expression, climbed in and drove away.
Harry grinned. “”Where do you suppose she got the strength to throw her chaise out of a window?”
Bessie sighed and looked dubious. “Those things are heavy. Maybe the spirit really did show up and help her.”
They looked at each other, shrugged and started for bed.

A Spell to Find a Furry (or Finned or Feathered or Scaled) Friend

Adopting a pet isn’t always an easy process. Filling out applications, waiting, and then meeting potential future family members can be as tiring and frustrating as it is rewarding. To ease the process, write the name of the type of animal you want to adopt on a blank piece of paper, and place it on your altar ( you can also make a general statement, such as “Let the right animal for me come to me”). Weigh the paper down with four stones: rose quartz for the love you will give and receive, smokey quartz for endurance of the adoption process, garnet for the commitment you will be making, and turquoise for the joy you will give and receive through the pet ownership. As you place each stone, speak your desire aloud:
Paw, claw, fin, or feather,
I know we will find each other!
Leave the message on your altar until your new family member joins you.

Doing for Others

In doing service for others we often find answers to our own questions and solutions to our own problems.
When we feel bad, often our first instinct is to isolate ourselves and focus on what’s upsetting us. Sometimes we really do need some downtime, but many times the best way to get out of the blues quickly is to turn our attention to other people. In being of service to others, paradoxically, we often find answers to our own questions and solutions to our own problems. We also end up feeling more connected to the people around us, as well as empowered by the experience of helping someone.
When we reach out to people we can help, we confirm that we are not alone in our own need for support and inspiration, and we also remind ourselves that we are powerful and capable in certain ways. Even as our own problems or moods get the better of us sometimes, there is always someone else who can use our particular gifts and energy to help them out. They, in turn, remind us that we are not the only people in the world with difficulties or issues. We all struggle with the problems of life, and we all feel overwhelmed from time to time, but we can almost always find solace in service.
In the most ideal situation, the person we are helping sheds light on our own dilemma, sometimes with a direct piece of advice, and sometimes without saying anything at all. Sometimes just the act of getting our minds out of the obsessive mode of trying to figure out what to do about our own life does the trick. Many great inventors and artists have found that the inspiration they need to get to the next level in their work comes not when they’re working but when they’re walking around the block or doing dishes. We do ourselves and everyone else a great service when we take a break from our sorrows and extend ourselves to someone in need.
