Llewellyn’s Spell A Day

World Food Day

On this day in 1945, the United Nations founded the Food and Agriculture Organization, dedicated to dealing with the issues of poverty and hunger. In 1979, World Food Day was officially established as an international celebration. Each year, the day has a different theme and focus, usually revolving around agriculture, and events are held in over 150 countries.

But you don’t need to be part of a worldwide organization to do your bit toward ending hunger. Today, donate to your local food pantry or, if you garden, give a part of your harvest to a food kitchen. If you know someone who is struggling, drop off a bag of groceries. No matter what else you do, try to have a renewed appreciation for the food on your own table. Remember to thank the gods and those who worked hard to produce the food, and be grateful.
Embrace Change

At this time of year, many people enjoy the enchanting sight of autumn leaves. Their fiery colors represent the beauty that arises from embracing change.

On your next walk, collect several autumn leaves. (You can also use green leaves, flowers, or a clipping of grass. They change with time too, so they will work.) When you return home, place them in a dish on your altar. With deep breaths, tap into their energy. Imagine their lives, from when they were first hidden in a branch, then grew into tiny green buds and into maturity. See how the sun and weather changed every day, and as the sunlight decreased, the leaves responded by changing color. Finally, envision the leaves letting go of what they knew and floating to the ground, peacefully surrendering.

Keep the dish of leaves as a reminder of how beautiful change is and how you can embrace it with grace. When you no longer need the reminder, place the leaves in a jar and use them in future magical works for change.
Guardian Angel Buttons

It’s been said (in buttonless circles) that a button is something for the devil to hang onto. Well, if the devil can hang onto a button, why can’t a guardian angel do the same?

Take a quiet moment to talk to your guardian angel. (I like to do this on my morning walk and just have chat where I ask for guidance and protection throughout the day.) As you converse, what colors or patterns come to mind? Find or buy buttons in the colors or patterns that were shown to you—you may find that they just come into your hands! Sew the button into the inside of the left side of your coat or jacket (or any piece of clothing), right over your heart. As you sew, say or sing:

Near to my heart, angel of mine,
Bound by thread and love divine!
Carry your angel with you wherever you go!
A Spell for Mental Clarity and Growth

Our brains are constantly changing and developing, and every challenge we face offers us a chance to learn.

For this spell to encourage mental clarity and growth, you’ll need:

  • A purple candle and holder
  • A small open bowl or jar
  • A sharpened pencil
  • Matches
  • One or more of fluorite, amethyst, lapis, or tiger eye
  • One or more of fresh or dried peppermint, turmeric, basil, or green tea
  • A small bell

Place the candle, bowl, and pencil on your altar. Light the candle safely. Place the gems and herbs in the bowl or jar, then hold it in your hands, with eyes closed, and focus on clearing your mind. Think about an obstacle you face and what you need to do to surmount it. Set the bowl down, open your eyes, and hold the pencil. Repeat:

The sharp point of this pencil
creates, while its softer end erases.
May I remember that in every action
There is no failure—
Only a chance to experience growth.

Ring the bell and pause, focusing on growth. Extinguish the candle. Leave the materials on your altar for contemplation.
Stay Out, Unwanted Spirits!

As the veil between the worlds begins to thin in early October, we like to do a little extra protection work to keep our house free of unwanted spirit visitors. For this spell you will need a couple of pinches of salt and a bowl of water. Say a cleansing blessing over the salt and water and then mix together.

Now walk the perimeter of your dwelling, sprinkling the salted water as you go. As you walk, state your intentions. We use these words:

Only those souls that are wanted and
invited are welcome in this space!
I cast out what is not wanted and
shield this space from those that
would cause mischief or harm.

Pay special attention to windows and doors, and don’t be afraid to throw a little water to get to things above your reach. When done outside, repeat indoors.
Let Go of a Problem

Today, collect nine autumn leaves that have already fallen. (If there aren’t any fallen leaves in your area, you can use rose petals instead.) Light a stick of cedar incense on your altar. Take some deep breaths, center yourself, and call on the Great Goddess. Bring to mind a problem, issue, or block from which you would like to liberate yourself. From your heart, ask the Goddess to help you heal, unravel, and dissipate this issue in all directions of time. Hold the leaves between your hands as you direct the energy of the challenge into the leaves. Breathe fully as you imagine draining your body and aura of all related stress or anxiety and sending all your tension and worry into the leaves. Once this feels complete, set the leaves down and safely bathe one leaf at a time in the incense smoke. Extinguish the incense, then go outside and release the leaves to the wind, into a body of water, or near the base of a tree.
Payment to Pachamama

It’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Columbus Day, and Thanksgiving Day in Canada—so it’s a complex day. Let’s conjure the venerable mother goddess Pachamama, creatrix of all life and embodiment of the earth. She can be seen as a gorgeous Peruvian woman wearing a red dress and alpaca shawl and carrying a child.

We get everything we enjoy from the natural world from Pachamama. Let’s do a ritual where you pay what you can in thanks for all she does in your life.

Do this ritual in a field. The altar you build at the beginning of the ritual pays homage to all that is indigenous, and it salutes Thanksgiving.

Gather these materials:

  • Stones
  • A basket (a cornucopia is ideal)
  • A variety of whole foods or herbs
  • Some pretty doll clothing
  • Spirits
  • Cacao leaves if possible; if not, then cacao nibs

Build an altar with stones and set the basket on it. Fill the basket with whole foods or herbs. Scatter the doll clothing, and hold the items down with rocks. Mindfully pour your libation. Crumble and let the cacao leaves or nibs hit the air before scattering. Say:

Pachamama, this is my payment
to you for all that you do!

Wisdom Of The Owl

Owls are patient messengers, bringers of information and the holders of wisdom, and capable of seeing the unseen.

For as long as humankind has recognized animals as teachers, wise people have recognized traits worthy of respect in both wild and domestic creatures. The cultural and spiritual significance of certain animals transcends geographical boundaries. But the majestic and mysterious owl has, for over many millennia, served as the focal point of numerous contradictory beliefs. Though owls have been regarded with awe and fascination, they have also served as agents of fear. Since owls are nocturnal, human-owl encounters tended to occur at night and likely when the bird was swooping silently down to earth to grapple with prey. Yet even as some shied away from the owl, calling it an agent of darkness, others recognized the depths of awareness in beautiful owls’ eyes.

In the classical Greek tradition, an owl could often be found perched on the shoulder of Athena, goddess of wisdom, while owls could ward off bad luck in Roman lore. It is in Indigenous American mythos that the owl attains its own unique identity. Owls are patient messengers, bringers of information, and the holders of wisdom, and they are capable of seeing the unseen. With their keen eyesight, they can glance into the soul to discern meaning and motive, and they are totems of truth. Unlike our distant forebears, we may never encounter an owl in the wild, but we can nonetheless internalize the wisdom of the owl by attuning ourselves to its most venerable qualities. Fully integrating the medicine of the owl into spiritual existence is a matter of considering how we might open ourselves more fully to the wisdom that can be found in the larger universe.

Should you find your efforts blocked as you commune with the owl, remember that it was not always revered as an icon of wisdom. This denizen of the nighttime has overcome many prejudices in its long association with humankind. To reveal those hidden elements of the self that impact your life for better or for worse, you must often make your way through the darkest parts of your soul. There is indeed darkness both inside the self and outside the self, but like the owl, you can transcend it by drawing nourishment from the insights you receive when you penetrate it.

Heartwings Love Notes 1057 The Beauty of Fall

Heartwings says, “When your eyes are open to beauty, your heart is too.”

Driving the country roads of New England is a nice experience most times of the year, but the fall presents an especially glorious season to do so. I was reflecting on this thought recently, as I drove Stephen and me to a town not far from our home in North Grafton, for our Covid Booster shots.

It was a bright, clear sunny day. We traveled on roads lined with trees expressing their fall exuberance. The noontime light shone through the brilliance of their red and yellow leaves. It was heartstoppingly beautiful. After we’d had our shots, I decided it would be fun to not go straight home but to have a meander-what I call a wandering adventure, in further traveling the lovely roads.

Though I hadn’t been on these streets before, knowing the area sufficiently, I didn’t fear getting lost. We drove down one astonishingly bright, curving tree lined road after another, marveling at the sights that unfolded. Both of us were enthralled with what we saw. I sent up a little prayer of gratitude. It was so peaceful, yet so exciting!

For a moment in time that stretched on and on, I had no thought for the troubles of the world, what we’d have for lunch, or anything beyond the present moment. As I drove, from time to time I’d point out an especially wonderful tree or vista. It was easy to keep my eyes on the road because that was where the action was anyway. Fortunately, there was no one behind me to grow annoyed at my somewhat slow pace. If there had been, I would have pulled over and let them pass. I was in no hurry to get anywhere.

Fall has always been my favorite time of year. I cherish it, not only for its beauty but also for its interesting weather. Like spring it is a back-and-forth time of year. Cold alternates with warm as the season progresses. It’s coats one day and shorts the next. Having been born in the fall may have something to do with it. Also, there are the holidays to look forward to. Furthermore, as an adult I enjoy the opportunity to sleep better and longer as the dark hours take over from the light.

That night as we got ready for bed we talked about the glorious vistas, as well as splendid individual trees we had seen on our drive. I reflected how thankful I was for the opportunity to take the time to do the trip. Experiences like those are precious. Those of us who are fortunate to live where they are frequent are especially blessed. I hope to keep New England as my forever home.

May you find delight in the fall wherever you dwell.

Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

Enjoying Life
It is only in the present moment that we experience being alive.

Life, in all of its fullness, is happening right now. While our thoughts are sometimes elsewhere, beautiful opportunities and moments are being passed over and lost to the flow of time. And though we cannot possibly fully experience each leaf that falls to the ground, sometimes we get so attached to reaching our goals that we don’t pay attention to the wonder all around us. When we do that, we live in a world that exists only in our heads, and we miss life itself. There is so much to be enjoyed and appreciated that we need to remember to pay attention to the present moment, because it is the only space in which we can experience being alive.

We learn from our past, but dwelling on it keeps us from being fully present to life in the moment. We create our lives with our thoughts, but focusing so firmly on our imagined future keeps us from co-creating with the universe, so we might never allow ourselves to live our dreams as they manifest. It’s possible to be so happy and comfortable in our inner worlds that we lose touch with the business of life.

Life must be attended to, and if we are wise, we can enjoy it at the same time. We can awaken ourselves to the moment we are living right now by taking a deep breath and simply looking around. In doing so, we refocus our attention on our location in the real world. Then we can learn to appreciate the process of working toward our goals as much as their attainment. Balancing ourselves between the present moment and eternity, we can experience and enjoy the full range of reality available to us as spiritual beings living on earth.

Essential Oils: Frankincense (Boswellia)
Guide To Essential Oils

Andrew Weil, M.D.

Frankincense (Boswellia) is a resin obtained from the Boswellia, a large branching tree native to India, the Middle East and North Africa. It has been used as incense in religious and cultural ceremonies since antiquity. Clinical trials have shown that boswellic acid, the principal active component, has anti-inflammatory action comparable to that of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Frankincense has been used to treat osteoarthritis, ulcerative colitis and bronchial asthma as well as colic and intestinal gas. It has also been studied for possible anti-cancer effects.

Frankincense Uses:
Arthritis: Applying frankincense essential oil topically may reduce the inflammation, pain and stiffness of rheumatoid arthritis. One randomized controlled trial found that Boswellia extract provided better pain control than a placebo for osteoarthritis, and other research showed that it might decrease joint pain by 32 to 65 percent.

Asthma: Frankincense essential oil is widely promoted for treatment of asthma. Results of a double blind, placebo-controlled study from Germany, published in 1998, showed that 70 percent of the patients treated with 300 mg of boswellia gum resin three times a day for six weeks showed improvement, compared to only 27 percent of patients in A control group.

Cancer: Laboratory studies have shown that frankincense has potential anticancer activity, including slowing the replication of cancer cells and killing some of them. However, to date no research has shown that it is useful in treating cancer in humans.

Menstrual cramps: No scientific research supports the use of frankincense for this purpose.

Ulcerative colitis: A preparation from Boswellia serrata gum resin led to remission of ulcerative colitis in 82 percent of treated patients in an Indian study published in 1997.

While considered safe for adults, some evidence indicates that using frankincense essential oil on the skin can cause contact dermatitis. We don’t know enough about the safety of using frankincense during pregnancy and breast-feeding, so it is best to avoid it at these times. Do not put frankincense essential oil directly on your skin. Dilute it with a carrier oil first. Ingesting boswellia extract may increase the risk of bleeding if you take blood-thinning medication.

Dr. Weil’s View On Frankincense
Natural anti-inflammatory herbs including boswellia may work as well as aspirin and ibuprofen for treating osteoarthritis. Follow package directions and give it at least two months before deciding if it is working for you.

Who Are The Three Sisters?

The Three Sisters is a Native American legend and a dynamic cropping method that the Iroquois are said to have been practicing for three centuries before European settlers arrived in North America. The Three Sisters are corn, beans and squash that were (and still are) planted together because they thrive next to each other and also provide a healthy diet. Seeds for all three are planted on an elevated mound or hill, which promotes needed soil drainage. Corn is planted first, and when it starts to grow, the bean seeds are put in, and finally the squash. The corn provides support for the beans to climb; the beans “fix” nitrogen from the air into the soil for the benefit of all three plants. The squash leaves shade the ground, keeping it cool.

The Three Sisters yielded a healthy diet for centuries, although rather than being eaten in the summer, the vegetables were typically dried and saved for use during the winter.

When you eat fresh corn on or off the cob, you get fiber, along with niacin, phosphorous, potassium and vitamin A, as well as starch and protein. When corn is in season locally, you’ll likely find that it is freshest and most delicious, especially when you buy it at farm stands or farmers’ markets rather than at supermarkets. Opt for organic corn whenever possible.

The beans can be different varieties of pole beans, including green beans, wax or lima beans or any type of dried beans; they are low in calories and high in fiber, vitamin A and vitamin C, calcium and iron. Dried kidney beans, pinto beans, black beans or garbanzo beans are high-fiber, high-protein foods. Just one cup of cooked kidney beans gives you 45 and 31 percent of the Daily Value of fiber and protein, respectively, as well as 42 percent of the Daily Value of manganese, a mineral essential for energy production and antioxidant protection.

The third sister often refers to pumpkin, which is recommended by Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for a Three Sisters garden. A cup of cooked pumpkin is rich in beta-carotene and also gives you some calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, niacin, folate (vitamin B9) and vitamin E. Alternatives are thick-skinned winter squashes such as butternut or acorn squash that can be stored for months. Winter squash provides calcium, potassium, vitamin A and vitamin C along with iron and phosphorus, and high quality, low-glycemic-load carbohydrates.

Coach Gilberto Chapter 33
by Stephen Halpert

It was suppertime. Maria was serving her legendary meatball pie laced in a spicy garlic sauce with mixed vegetables. Gilberto and Joey were already at the table. Maria brought in her platter. “Where’s Mona,” she asked?
“I’ll go call her,” Joey said. He soon returned followed by Mona and a tail wagging Boris.
She had a sparkle in her eye that worried Gilberto. Boris sniffed at the platter. Maria swatted him on the nose with a dishtowel. “Go,” she said. “This is people food.” Boris gave her a reproachful look and turned away from the table. She sat down and began serving supper.
After a few forkfuls Mona said. “Daddy how soon before I can get married.”
Gilberto frowned and shook his head. “You’re only eleven.”
Mona jutted her chin. “But I’ll be twelve very soon.”
Maria smiled. “I think in this state eighteen is the legal age for marriage-at least as far as I know. Why do you ask?”
“Because I think I want to get married,” Mona said, casually.
Gilberto coughed. “Aren’t you a little young for that?”
“Oh no,” Mona said assuredly. “I’ve read that on the Pacific islands, native girls marry as young as twelve.” She paused dramatically. “And I’ll be twelve very soon.”
Gilberto breathed deeply and contained himself “And why would you want to do that?”
Mona put down her fork, turned and looked Gilberto in the eye. “Because then as a wedding gift, my husband would give me a phone.”
Gilberto blinked and opened, then closed his mouth. Maria looked at Mona and raised her eyebrows. “And who might your husband be,” she asked.
Mona smiled. “Well he hasn’t exactly asked me yet. But I know he will.”
Joey grinned. “You and your pal Theodore?”
Mona looked very serious. She turned to Joey. “How do you know about Teddy?”
Joey smiled. “Well, you talk to him a lot on the phone.”
Mona’s face screwed up and she sniffed loudly. “So what? And please don’t spy on me.”
Joey put up his hands. “I don’t spy on you. But I can hear you talking.”
Maria smiled. “So this is all about getting a phone,” she said?
Mona’s nostrils widened and she straightened her shoulders. “Well, if that’s the only way I can get one.”
“As a wedding present from your future husband,” Maria said. She couldn’t help it, laughter bubbled out of her and rolled through the room.
“And where would you and your husband live,” Gilberto asked.”
“In my room,” Mona said. Her face was flushed, and she looked daggers at Maria.
Maria frowned. “”And you expect us to let him live here with you?
“Or I could move in with him. His parents have a big house on Louisburg Square just off Mt. Auburn Street on Beacon Hill.”
“Do I know his mother?” Maria asked?
“Maybe you met her at school,” Mona said. “But I don’t see why he can’t live here with me.”
“No,” Gilberto said perhaps more forcefully than he had intended. “You’re way too young.”
“Why not?” Mona asked. “Don’t you and mom want to be grandparents?”
Gilberto looked thunderstruck and started to sputter.
Gently Maria touched his arm. “Of course we do,” she smiled. “Years from now. Yes, Gilberto?”
He frowned and nodded. Then he sighed. “You mean you’d marry this guy just to get a phone?”
Mona sighed dramatically. “Sometimes everyone has to do something difficult. Right mom?”
Maria smiled again. “And of course, as his dearly devoted wife, you’d take care of things.”
Mona frowned. “What things?”
“You know, dear. The cooking and cleaning, and taking care of everything while your beloved husband goes to work–that is assuming he has a job.”
“Even if he has a job why should I have to do it all?”
Maria nodded silently conceding the point. “You ask him what his mom does around the house.”
“They have a maid and a cook,” Mona said indignantly.
Gilberto nodded. “So until you two can afford a cook and a maid you’ll be responsible.”
Mona wrinkled her nose.”
“But you’d get a phone,” Joey interjected. “Isn’t that why you’d marry him and take on a life of drudgery?”
Mona frowned. “Mom doesn’t cook and do the wash and clean the condo.”
“No! That’s right but she pays her cleaning person to get it done.”
Mona’s face fell. “But I don’t have any money. And we’d both still be in school.”
Gilberto opened his palms. “That’s true.”
“But you’d have a phone,” Joey grinned.
Maria looked at him and shook her head, finger to her lips.”
Mona sighed again. “Daddy why can’t you just give me a phone and then I won’t have to marry Teddy?”
“No,” Gilberto shook his head. “This is what you do to have what you really want, in this case your own phone.”
“You’re not fair!” Mona jumped up. “Come on Boris, let’s go sit in my room.” Abruptly they left.”
When she was gone Maria looked at Gilberto. “That wasn’t very nice.”
He nodded. “Wasn’t supposed to be. We get what we pay for in this lifetime.”
“Oh so philosophical,” Maria said. “But yes you did make a valid point. “
Joey stood, reached over and hugged Maria. “I love you mom and I love you too Gilberto. Thanks for letting me grow the way I’m supposed to.”
Gilberto smiled and turned toward Maria. “Maybe it’s time we turned in.”
Maria looked at her watch. “Soon. I think our daughter may be back for an encore.”
“If not tonight then soon,” Gilberto said. “Our daughter won’t take no for an answer, or at least she hasn’t yet.”
Maria smiled. “Just like us. We both did it our way. You can’t expect our kids to be any different.”
He looked at Joey. “You’re figuring it out. We’re proud of you for having the courage to confront yourself and go for whatever it is that awaits you.”
Joey nodded. “Thanks for having enough faith in me to let me grow into who I am.”
“And who is that?” Gilberto said.
Joey paused. “Oh someone who can have sex and realize what feels good and what doesn’t”.
“Good thing to know,” Gilberto said. “Helps you to avoid confusion later on.”
He grinned at Maria and ran his tongue over his upper lip.
Her face colored and slowly leaned in and kissed him.
Joey made a face. “Good night,” he said and went off to his room.

Kitty Kat’s Korner

Why Your Cat Paws the Floor After Eating

Before or after your kitten or cat eats or drinks, it may paw, scratch, or knead the floor as if it is digging or burying something. This is not unusual behavior, and rest assured there is nothing wrong with your cat if it is exhibiting this behavior. In fact, your pet is demonstrating an instinct shared even by the big cats, and it is a very positive sign that it is feeling at home in your house.

If you find the behavior annoying or disruptive, however, you can take simple steps to change it.

What Is Floor Pawing in Cats?
Many cats will scratch, paw, or knead the ground around their food bowl before or after eating. The pawing and digging is an example of instinctive behavior, meaning your cat probably didn’t learn it from its mother. Some cats may take this behavior to an extreme, spending a good deal of time scratching at the floor or kneading the carpet around their food bowl. In some cases, cats will also drag objects such as towels on top of their food bowls.

Caching, Protecting, or Disposing of Food
In the wild, feral cats often bury their food remains (as well as their feces) as a protective measure so their enemies can’t track them: buried food has little smell and does not attract scavengers or predators. If they are females still nursing their kittens, they will do so to help prevent other cats from finding their litter. Similarly, unneutered male cats will also spray their territory with urine as a warning to other predators to stay away. (Be sure to have your cat neutered at an appropriate age so he doesn’t follow through with urine marking.)

Cats all over the world demonstrate this behavior. It is similar to “food caching,” which is practiced by the big cats. The leopard is best known for food caching, which involves storing food high up in trees to keep away from lions and hyenas. The North American bobcat also exhibits this protective measure, covering the remains of its kill with debris to hide from other animals.

If you put newspapers under the food plates, you may notice your cat scratching under the plate, shredding the newspapers, and even piling them over the food bowl to hide it completely. This is another type of “food caching.”

In some cases, cats will scratch at or bury food or other items they dislike. This behavior is similar to burying feces in a litter box or on the ground. Like caching, burying allows the cat to “disappear” by getting rid of its waste. In addition, as cats often sleep where they eat, burying waste can be a way of “tidying” a cat’s personal space.

It may not seem to make sense that a house cat without any threat of their food being taken would exhibit this kind of behavior. And, it doesn’t make sense, really, except for the fact that the behavior is instinctual and cats do it naturally.

Kneading the Floor
Kneading, while it looks similar to pawing, is a sign of pleasure. Cats and kittens will knead one another by gently alternating their paws, much as a person might give another person a back rub. Kneading is a sign of contentment; when your cat kneads its paws it may be anticipating a pleasant experience (such as eating a meal). Kneading is more likely if the area surrounding the food bowl is soft (a carpet, for example).

How to Stop Your Cat from Pawing or Kneading the Floor
Neither pawing nor kneading is, in itself, a harmful behavior. It can’t hurt your cat, and it’s unlikely to cause you any harm. In fact, some cat owners simply find it cute.

On the other hand, it can be annoying and can lead to a mess if your pet rips up papers or damages your carpet. If you feel the behavior is a problem you can take a few steps to manage it.

Place food on a hard surface away from items that can be damaged or dragged to cover the bowl.

Stay with your pet as it eats, and remove the food bowl when it is finished eating. In general, it’s best to put away wet food within a few minutes if it isn’t entirely eaten, as it can easily spoil.

If your cat begins to paw the floor, distract it with a toy or game.
Avoid leaving dry cat food out for “free grazing” as this is likely to encourage pawing.

Do not punish your cat for scratching or kneading, as it is a natural behavior and is not intrinsically harmful. Punishing your cat by spraying or hitting an actual lead to more problematic behavior and can, in addition, make it harder for you and your pet to bond.

All Signs
We can use this week’s opportunities to accomplish what we want to do! There is lots of energy flying around helping us to communicate with others. This same energy will spur us to act, even competitively. Obviously, teamwork and negotiations are favoured. This wonderful blessing is because the Sun, Venus and Mars are supporting each other. (Admittedly mid-week, power struggles are likely because Pluto is in the picture. Pluto has never got over being demoted.) This is our chance to clean up whatever needs to be done. We will be like conquering Caesar! Veni vidi vacu. “I came, I saw, I vacuumed.”

Aries (March 21-April 19)
This is a wonderful week to work with others, especially partners and close friends. The major bonus is that you will find it easy to communicate with others. (Admittedly, on Wednesday there could be power struggles with authority figures.) Nevertheless, people will help you! And they will be happy to do so! This is a particularly strong week for writers, teachers, actors and people doing sales and marketing. Towards the end of the week, listen to the advice of someone older or more experienced, perhaps a friend or a member of a group, because this person will have valuable advice for you. Why not stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before you? It’s a better view!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)
You will be super active and productive this week! For starters, coworkers and helpers will be supportive. (That’s incredible, right there.) Furthermore, you feel motivated to boost your earnings and make money this week. (And you can!) Spend time making your work area look more attractive because this will pay off. It’s a good time to discuss agreements openly with others, including financial discussions. You may gain financial or other favours, quite unexpectedly, from a boss. Later in the week, get organized! You’ll have a sharp eye for detail. You will deal with serious matters in a persevering, dogged manner. “Tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” (African proverb.)

Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Lucky you, because you have an edge over everyone. Oh yes, this is a week where everyone can accomplish a lot because the energy and motivation are at hand, and that’s half the battle. But in your case, fiery Mars is in your sign, which means you’re really pumped for action! Those of you work in the entertainment world, the hospitality industry, show business or anything to do with the arts, sports and working with children will particularly excel. That’s because all this high-energy is combined with a creative component. Therefore, accept invitations to party! Enjoy good times! It’s obvious that your theme for the week is, “Work hard, party hard!”

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
You will accomplish a lot in your personal life this week. That’s because everything to do with home, family and dealing with family members, especially a parent, will be a ripe ground for you to make improvements and get things done. It’s the ideal week to tackle home repairs and redecorating projects or renovations. Family discussions will go well (even though something mysterious looks like it’s going on behind the scenes). Late in the week, discussions about shared property and financial support from others will be solid; and you will very likely come out laughing all the way to the bank. Avoid power struggles midweek with a partner or close friend. (No animal was harmed in the writing of this column.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)
This week is fast-paced. You’re excited about new ideas and keen to share them with others. It’s a fabulous week for those who teach, write, act, or work in sales and marketing, because your words are magic. People want to listen to you! Meanwhile, you’re keen to study, learn, talk and enlighten others. Short trips and travel will delight. One reason you feel happy and upbeat is that you are able to appreciate who you are, and what you have, especially your daily surroundings. (It’s so easy to take our surroundings for granted. But this week, you’re observant.) A competition with a friend or a group might be happening. If so, you’re ready. (“Tough? Are you crazy? I spent a year as a crossing guard.”)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Financial issues are uppermost in your mind this week. For starters, you will work hard to earn money and boost your earnings. No question. You have moneymaking ideas; and in part, you’re motivated because you are spending money on beautiful things for yourself and loved ones. (“I couldn’t resist.”) Fortunately, you can attract money to you this week. (Would I kid you?) You can also influence bosses, parents, and VIPs in a positive way. You will things happen because others will support you because they will respond to your words, which will work like magic. Avoid power struggles with your kids midweek. Ditto for romance. By the end of the week, make solid, practical plans for your job and your health.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
How sweet it is! The Sun, Mercury and your ruler Venus are all in your sign this week dancing beautifully with energetic Mars and stern Saturn. The gang’s all here! This is a burst of energy that works for you! Furthermore, this energy is supportive and fortunate for you. (You wanted more?) Don’t hesitate to speak up and share your ideas. It’s a strong week for public speaking, lecturing and convincing others to agree with you. Be patient so that you can avoid power struggles with family members midweek. Don’t take the bait! Take the high road. At the end of the week, make practical plans regarding your kids or a future vacation. Looking good!

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
This is a curious week. Everyone else is running around with an outboard motor strapped to their butt! However, you will be productive even though you are watching from the sidelines. For starters, your ability to research anything and come up with nuggets of information is stellar. If you work for the police, security systems, and medical research, your will be effective in grabbing information you need to know. “Gotcha!” Avoid ego battles on Wednesday because they will serve you no purpose. Remember that this is a year where you can improve your job or get a better job. You can also improve your health. This means keep your eye on the ball. (Good week to buy wardrobe treasures.)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
This is a popular week for you! Everyone wants to see your face. In particular, you will hang out with younger people more than usual as well as creative, artistic types. Expect involvement with groups and organizations. In fact, you might be a leader or elected to a leadership position. Friends, spouses and partners will support you. Nevertheless, around Wednesday, you might have to defend your position about something. (Don’t let this get you down and don’t make a big deal about it.) This is good week to make plans for the future, especially plans for travel and vacations! You might spend time this week with someone who is very special to you.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You’re in a lovely position this week because for starters, it’s a powerful, active, productive week for everyone. However, you are the only sign that has the Sun Mercury and Venus at the top of your chart! This means you’re running the show, and you’re getting credit for it. Bosses and people in authority will listen to you now. In fact, you will make such a great impression on VIPs, some of you will strike up a romance with a boss or an authority figure. Basically, people are impressed with your performance at work, which is why at the end of the week, conversations that could impact your earnings will take place. Meanwhile, continue to look for ways to improve your digs – because you can.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
This week has the flavour that you like. There’s a theme of freedom that is present everywhere. You will relish a desire to explore and do anything to expand your world. Of course, if you can, you will travel! But if you can’t travel, you will learn new things, study new things, and talk to fascinating people from other cultures. Some will strike up a romance with someone “different.” (Don’t leave home without a rose clenched in your teeth.) Your involvement with your kids will be energizing. Certain creative demands on your time will make you hustle. Later in the week, a serious discussion about life belief systems, history, religion – something profound – will take place. You love this.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
You can still hope to get richer this year. This week, you’re focused on shared finances, shared property and the wealth and resources of someone else. Obviously, people are supportive to you this year. They will give you gifts, practical things as well as money. Some of this wealth will come from a family member or someone at home. Just keep your pockets open and say, “Thank you” at the appropriate time. (Note: Whatever goes around, comes around, which means if gifts and goodies come your way now – you deserve them. Factoid.) At the end of the week, behind-the-scenes research, or a discussion with someone older might make you reassess your values about something. There’s always another point of view.

Celestial Prognostication IO

Weekly Horoscopes Beginning Sunday, 16 October 2022

If you’re born within a cusp period (16 to 26 of any month); you’re advised to read horoscopes of both signs covered by that period. You’re on the border; you may have influences from houses within those signs.

Outlines are longer versions; consist of every possible detail of everyday and are based on three parts of each sign: 1st, 2nd & 3rd Decan; that is, any of three divisions of 10° within a sign of the zodiac. Even if you know or don’t know your Decan; I recommend, please read all three Decan.

Personal theme: I am!!
Fire & cardinal sign: March 21 — April 19

Your horoscope for this week:

You’re in a cycle that’s all about decluttering your life. This includes clearing away once-rewarding activities and alliances. Consequently, you’re already rethinking a range of longstanding arrangements, some you’ve regarded as a fixed part of your routine. However, you’re not only beginning to realise these, and similar arrangements, are holding you back, other ideas and offers are extremely tempting. Explore them. You’ll be glad you did.

It is time to put your mind to long overdue financial transactions. If it makes sense to end old financial arrangements in preparation for new and more appropriate ones, look into this now and get it done. You could save yourself a lot of money by doing so. A group will come together to compete and have fun, and you will play a significant role in the team. This isn’t something you dip in and out of. Commitment is black and white. You are either in or out.

After this week, there will be only two more occasions when the Sun, moving through your opposite sign, will be at right angles to Pluto travelling over your career point. (The aspect occurs again in October 2023 and 2024). This week’s aspect coincides with the Last Quarter Moon and you may feel you’re seeing ‘writing on the wall’ as regards your career. You might now see that in two years’ time, you will alter course entirely. This may be no bad thing. The power struggles of the last 10 years can be put behind you. It helps hugely that this aspect coincides with a fabulous contact between Venus and Mars: you can build new partnerships or at least prepare grounds for developing one. With Jupiter still moving through your sign for another week, anticipate that others will see your apparent superpowers and want to do business with you.

Personal theme: I have!!
Earth & fixed sign: April 20 — May 20

Your horoscope for this week:

Recently, you noticed that, while you’ve added lots of interesting people and rewarding activities to your life, you haven’t begun clearing out those that are increasingly dull, if not seriously burdensome. Forget about carefully organising tactful discussions. Others are aware changes are timely and will be relieved you took the first step. Better yet, this will strengthen your bonds with certain individuals and cherished activities.

If you put your patience to good use, you should be able to sort out any problems you are facing. Persuade others to leave it to you to deal with plans that are still mixed up and muddled at the moment. Once you’ve taken a good look at them, you will soon have everything well organised. Someone will need your help with a task they can’t carry out very efficiently on their own. This will be no bother to you when you can immediately see how to approach this issue to get the best results.

You know what you know and you know what you don’t know. The latter is important. You’ve been on a career development journey now for over a decade. It’s coming to its last stages. In a couple of years’ time, you will know exactly what kind of footprint you want to leave. This is more than just about a financial legacy: it’s about having made your mark and said what you think you believe in. Discussions taking place around this week’s Last Quarter Moon are vital. You may be asked to take over a project that has been very much someone else’s ‘baby’ and which now needs to move to next stage. Don’t doubt your abilities. True, you probably will need to put in long hours and work closely with a Gemini, Libra or Aquarius. There may be times – especially midweek -, when you feel you’re banging your head against a brick wall. This is temporary. The solar eclipse at the end of this month is in your opposite sign. This very sophisticated New Moon will bring fresh partnership energy your way.

Personal theme: I think!!
Air sign: May 21 — June 20

Your horoscope for this week:

With dynamic Mars in Gemini, you’ve the courage to explore activities that, in the past, seemed overwhelming. Instead of focusing on one or two and forgetting the rest, make a point of trying out new, and intriguing options, but also continuing the process of exploration, knowing one experience will lead to another. Final decisions? It’s far too early. You’re in a cycle of growth and self-discovery.

It will be your positive outlook that helps you overcome obstacles both on the family front and on your career path. You’re about to step into a more successful phase. You’ve already learned how charging ahead with a headstrong attitude can lead to mistakes. This time you will plan ahead and take your time. Talking frankly with those you live with and other members of the family will sow the seeds for a better future. It’s a great time to start planning ahead.

You need a break. Yet this is arguably the wrong time of year to try and have one. You may not have the resources to make that happen. Meanwhile, pressure from others – notably those born under Libra or Aquarius could be considerable. You could be struck with an attack of ideas -itis. Yes, some might say that’s because you have too many irons in the fire and so appear unfocused. With Mars moving through your sign, it would be understandable if you were prone to responding excitedly to almost anything. Take care that you’re not seduced by yet another proposal towards the end of this week. That could come from someone you worked with in the last decade but who has already moved into a new industry. They may see that you have exactly the right qualities for a position opening up there.

Personal theme: I feel!!
Water & cardinal sign: June 21 — July 22

Your horoscope for this week:

After a period, that’s mostly been about disentangling yourself from unrewarding arrangements, you’ve both the time and energy to do a little exploring. Better yet, this fits with other projects. New, often unexpected and exciting ideas, and the people that come with them, are keeping you busy. While, obviously you couldn’t maintain this pace for long, for now, focus on exploration. By next week you’ll know enough to begin making decisions.

Are you listening to the wrong people? Someone will give well-meaning advice but do they really know what is best for you? You could miss out on taking notice of the wrong person. Someone who has known you for years better understands your hopes and aspirations. They will give the guidance you need to pursue opportunities that should work to your advantage. The pressure and expectation are on you in a team effort, and you don’t intend to let anyone down.

This week opens with the Last Quarter Moon in your sign coinciding with an aspect that will only occur twice more in your lifetime. This involves Pluto – travelling in your opposite sign. You may be aware that those are your working with, are rethinking their long-term plans. Though they might not be ready to make a move for a couple of years yet, awareness that the ground is shifting could be unsettling. On the bright side, a fabulous aspect involving Venus and Mars suggests you might consider joining forces with a Gemini or Libra. Though these are Air signs of the zodiac and yes, can whip you up into an emotional storm, they are also good for opening new pathways of thinking. With a solar eclipse in another Water sign due in just over a week’s time, fresh ideas really are on the way and putting time and effort now to clearing up old issues should enable new projects to launch smoothly.

Personal theme: I will!!
Fire & fixed sign: July 23 — August 22

Your horoscope for this week:

You’re aware you could probably keep certain once-rewarding arrangements going for longer; but deep down, you know they must come to an end. The problem? While you’ve hints about what’s next, nothing is clear. It’s out of character, but take things in stages. This gives you the time to ask vital questions the moment they arise, and then decide how changes can be best dealt with.

Before taking someone up on a travel or holiday suggestion, do your sums. Add up what this is all going to cost. This will mean that you can decide in advance whether or not you can afford it, and if not, you may come up with a cheaper alternative. A recent misunderstanding in the workplace can be forgotten now. Although you may not receive any apologies, you will get the impression that a senior colleague regrets having made demands that were not received well by those who had been expected to carry them through.

At least one of your plans should be on full steam ahead as of Tuesday. A burst of energy at the Last Quarter Moon coincides with a fabulous aspect between Venus and Mars. You may find that others are more cooperative than they have been. Note too, that Jupiter returns to what is known as the world axis. Whilst news on the global stage might not be of the positive variety, you may sense that at least the wheels are moving. This gives you opportunity to review recent decisions and perhaps, rethink where and how you work. A plan may be emerging. Note that there is a solar eclipse before the end of this month and with that comes fresh opportunity. For now, ensuring that what needs to be finished is concluded gracefully, and that your outline plan for 2023 is clear, should ensure that this week is viewed as having been productive and constructive.

Personal theme: I analyse!!
Earth sign: August 23 — September 22

Your horoscope for this week:

For ages you’ve felt the need to review your approach to both money and your time. Finally, with both your ruler Mercury and the Sun accenting these, you can finally devote time to these. Clear as the circumstances in question are, you won’t always be sure what to do. You’re better off examining the facts, deciding what’s best, then turning those decisions into action.

Arguments you have been having with an in-law or neighbour should not be allowed to get any worse. Even if it means you have to be extra nice to someone who is annoying you, this is your chance to prove to others how diplomatic you can be. Take the line of least resistance. Business success will come through jobs carried out as a team. It will feel good to work with others who share the same goal.

Your ruling planet, Mercury, is now out of what is known as its shadow period i.e., it’s now returned to the position it held before turning retrograde. The twists and turns of the last few weeks can now be put firmly behind you. True, there may be anxiety that certain tasks will simply never be concluded to your satisfaction. Yet it should also be clear that what began as an idea or trial run back in August has mileage – even if it does require further refinement. There is a Solar Eclipse next week and in these few days prior to that event, ensuring that as much is tidied up and secured would be a wise use of energy. Note too, that Saturn is closing in on its final station in Aquarius and that soon a new timetable and schedule will be set. Virgos like nothing better than seeing a firm plan and timetable put in place. By Friday, others should see you at your very best.

Personal theme: I balance!!
Air & cardinal sign: September 23 — October 22

Your horoscope for this week:

The last thing you’re in the mood to do is act as referee for others’ often self-serving disputes. However, in doing so, you’ll help clear up confusion so everybody, including you, can proceed with the rest of life. Ironically, what you learn when discussing the issues in question will help clarify other frequent issues, enough you’ll find ways prevent these, too, turning into pointless dramas.

After a quiet spell, social and romantic activities will be a source of pure pleasure. Friends will respond positively to your personality’s more outgoing and creative side. You will be in demand for parties, weddings and group outings. You will also enjoy this chance to bring the more easy-going side of your nature to the fore. Embarking on a new diet or health routine will feel invigorating. It will feel good to break a habit that hasn’t been a healthy one.

There will only be two more occasions this century when the Sun, in your sign, lies at right angle to Pluto. (The other aspects occur in 2023 and 2024). Before the 2023 event, Pluto moves on into Air sign, Aquarius which should boost your natural curiosity and creativity. Monday’s aspect coincides with the Last Quarter Moon that focuses on your career zone. You perhaps already know that your aims and objectives have altered substantially. Now they’re gaining new momentum. Given that this aspect coincides with Venus (in your sign), making positive aspect to Mars, it’s likely that you now have support to push in new direction. The financial possibilities are considerable. A flurry of activity and interaction with those you’ve worked with in the past should make clear that you have renewed respect and a solid platform on which to build.

Scorpio & Ophiuchus
Personal theme: I desire!!
Water & fixed signs: October 23 — November 21

Your horoscope for this week:

Sometimes obstacles are no more than that, difficulties to be overcome, so you can proceed with plans. However, those you’re currently encountering are accenting a range of undiscovered issues, some minor, but others more worrying, if not far-reaching. True, the resulting discussions won’t be easy. Still, what you learn and, even more, the dramas you avoid more than justify the focus required to deal with these.

You will be advising people to be more cautious. Others look to you for guidance, and your leadership skills shine. Just be sure to remember this advice for yourself later in the week ‘ tread carefully even when you are under pressure or in your haste; you could overlook something that could later be of great use to you. Something that’s currently going around the local grapevine will sound disturbing, but there is every possibility a false piece of information is being passed around.

In just over a week’s time, there will be a solar eclipse in your sign. View this as a fresh start on the horizon. For now, at this Monday’s Last Quarter Moon, the Sun makes major aspect to one of your ruling planets, Pluto. You could view this as a marking ‘the end of a beginning’ or an overture coming to an end. It seems you’re preparing to turn a fresh page. Yours is a sign with natural insightfulness. You see opportunities that others may well miss. With a fabulous aspect between Venus and Mars occurring this week, many people will be in partnership mode. Scorpio knows the strength that a good working union provides. With Saturn coming to its final station at the base of your chart station (something that won’t recur for another three decades), it seems you’re en route to get started on a career journey that takes you through the next 7 or even 14 years.

Personal theme: I see!!
Fire sign: November 22 — December 21

Your horoscope for this week:

Being inquisitive by nature, you’ve no objection to change. Actually, you’ll often welcome the challenge that comes with unfamiliar situations. Now, however, you’re short of facts, so much you’re unsure where to go for guidance. While challenging initially, this is about reorganising everything from your habits to who you spend time with. This, in turn, will answer those important questions but, also, broaden your horizons.

Calmness and quick thinking will allow you to overcome a family problem at the start of the week. This same attitude could be successfully employed later in the career field. When money crops up in conversation, think carefully before you speak. An increasing desire for security and stability will help you find a swift solution, and very soon, everything in the financial department will be running smoothly. If you’ve been searching for a place to live, a friend might mention a place that will suit you perfectly.

Within the space of just three years, your financial world is set to alter unbelievably. No-one can be ready for the wave that is about to engulf the financial world. Yet clues should be there for those looking out at the beginning of this week. Monday’s Last Quarter Moon coincides with the near penultimate aspect between the Sun and Pluto still travelling through neighbouring Capricorn. Seizing this moment, and learning about new methods of transaction would be wise. With Jupiter – your ruling planet – passing a degree known as the World Axis, you could tune in to this vibration with relative ease. There’s no guarantee that you will win that lottery of course, but you could yet be ahead of the financial game. By next Saturday’s alignment of the Sun with Venus – which comes just ahead of next Sunday’s Solar Eclipse, not only could you be well informed, you could alert others to growing dangers. Careerwise this week should see you viewed as a valuable source for information and a guide.

Personal theme: I use!!
Earth & cardinal sign: December 22 — January 19

Your horoscope for this week:

As a practical Capricorn, you’ve learnt to think carefully about how you’ll benefit from your efforts in the here and now, and equally, future plans. The problem? Changes, as dramatic as they are sudden are forcing you to reorganise arrangements, often within minutes. For now, forget about those practicalities and be bold. This isn’t about caution. The more chances you take, the more you’ll learn.

A need to pursue a solo activity will be so strong you can hardly resist it. You’re having a great time when it comes to making progress with personal ambitions. Even if you’re usually found at the heart of all the action, you now have a number of things on your mind that will keep you out of the limelight. Some time will be usefully spent looking for an outlet for your emotions. Spending time apart will inspire you to forgive someone who has recently upset you.

Only twice more after this Monday’s Last Quarter Moon will the Sun in Libra be at right angle to Pluto in your sign (2023 and 2024). This 2022 version may be the most potent as it coincides with a key phase in the Venus-Mars cycle. With the latter passing through your ‘work’ zone, it could be that you and a co-worker come up with the plan to be implemented over the next couple of years and which would bring significant revenue stream or increased sense of well-being. Both Venus and Mars are presently travelling through Air signs and ideas should come thick and fast. The art as always, is to ground these. This is where Capricorns have a special gift. With the knowledge that your ruling planet Saturn, is coming to its final station in Aquarius for the next three decades, know too, that you’re about to lay a foundation stone. This week should find you ‘surveying the land’.

Personal theme: I know!!
Air & fixed sign: January 20 — February 18

Your horoscope for this week:

Your genuine interest in others’ lives and in the world around you, makes it seem you’re comfortable with sudden changes in your own life. On the contrary, you’re battling current developments, and trying to undo other, recent, changes. However, these aren’t just timely, they’re in your best interests. If you can’t say an enthusiastic yes, at least discuss them with others. You won’t regret it.

It will fall on you to get on top of the admin side of a group, charity or community project you’re involved in. There will be dozens of phone calls to make, letters to write and meetings to attend. Do keep a check on all expenses incurred, or your enthusiasm may leave you out of pocket. An oasis away from work matters and other responsibilities will come in the form of some creative thinking. This may even culminate in a piece of art or writing.

In just over a week’s time Saturn, your ruling planet, will come to its final station in Aquarius. It won’t repeat this position for another three decades. This coincides neatly with a Solar Eclipse that is not dissimilar to one in 2014. The cosmos never does exact repeats but there may be ‘variations on that earlier theme’. Between Monday’s Last Quarter Moon and that sophisticated New Moon, is all about preparation. It’s probable that ideas will flow thick and fast. It is imperative that the past is cleared up before you give full focus to the future. In the process, you might also see items or ideas that could be recycled or regenerated. Joining forces with someone who shares your concerns, could lead to discussions about protecting the environment and perhaps greater involvement in politics.

Personal theme: I believe!!
Water sign: February 19 — March 20

Your horoscope for this week:

Others don’t realise it, but their pointless battles upset you. However, you’ve aware your advice is unwelcome, so you’ve withdrawn in silence; but suddenly, you’re facing battles of your own. Recently, you dealt with them discreetly. Instead, adopt a more forthright approach to these, along with others. This won’t just be informative for them, they’re likely to give you a hand dealing with those obstacles.

Some talents of yours have not gone unnoticed. You have a unique ability that could come in useful in a work situation. Whether planned or not, you could find yourself working on jobs that others would typically handle. This is a huge opportunity to impress your boss and others in charge. In order to get ahead, you’ve got to look to be proactive, and by doing so, you will be giving yourself a significant lead over your competitors.

Monday’s Last Quarter Moon is in another of the Water signs. Though at one level, you might feel that you are involved in the concluding phase of a project, you might also sense excitement. Ideas should be flowing thick and fast leaving you aware that others are preparing to make major change. Yes, this could be driven by finances and the need to conserve resources. Don’t underestimate the contribution you make to discussions. Your thoughts on how best to use limited resources have as much value as others though on Friday, you might understandably wonder if you can make your voice heard. It may be that this isn’t about getting others to listen, but rather to read. Notes you prepare or a letter, should have impact.
