Llewellyn’s Spell A Day

Banish Useless Anger

There are times for righteous anger, but sometimes anger is unfounded or its time has passed. Lingering anger can be banished with this spell, which requires a bowl, a glass of water, and ten matches.

Pour half the water into the bowl before you, then hold a match. Get in touch with your anger. Remember what stoked this emotion.

When you really feel the anger, strike the match and watch it burn, bright and hot. Drop it into the bowl before it burns your fingers.

Repeat this with the other nine matches, calling your anger to the surface and dropping the match.

When you’re done, look at the spent matches before you. See how much energy was spent on this anger and what a waste it was. Those matches could have been used for other projects like lighting spell candles or celebratory bonfires.

Drink the water in the glass. Imagine that it instills peace and love in all the places where anger once resided.
Staple Spell

Staples are magic! Most staples are
made of zinc and steel. Zinc can
be used for protection and invisibility,
and steel for endurance—a perfect

Incense Blessing

If you’re like many magical practitioners, you have a good amount of incense lying around. Even if you only have a little (or if you’d like to purchase some for this purpose), bless your incense today to refresh its magic.

First, round up all your incense: sticks, cones, or powder. Spread a white cloth outdoors in full sunlight. (If there’s no sunlight in your area today, you can do this indoors. In this case, safely light four white candles at the four corners of the white cloth.) Place all your incense on the cloth, leaving it in its packaging or containers. Direct your palms toward the incense. Say:

Earth, air, water, fire, and
spirit, Goddess and God, please
bless these sacred scents.
Reawaken their magic.
Infuse them with light. Align
them with your power.
Thank you and blessed be.

Let the incense soak up the light for a minute or two more, then return it to its rightful place in your magical supply box (or wherever you keep it). Extinguish the candles if you used them.
Full Moon Divination

Tonight is the full moon, conveniently occurring at a time when most people can catch it. This lunar phase lends power to many magical workings. One of those is divination. You can see things by the light of the full moon that are difficult or impossible to spot at any other time.

For this spell you will need a bowl or a chalice that is black (or at least dark) on the inside. This makes it more reflective and aids in scrying. Fill the bowl with water and add a pinch of salt, preferably sea salt. Go outside where you can see the full moon. Move around until you can catch its reflection on the surface of the water. Then say:

Full moon, shining round and bright,
Give to me the inner sight.
What is past or yet to be,
Let it now appear to me.

Gaze into the bowl, and you should glimpse images of the past or of future possibilities of use to you. Afterward, pour the water on the ground.
A Seashell Sea Spell

There aren’t many better representations of the ocean than seashells. Easy to acquire, they carry the mighty energy of the endless sea. The ocean, of course, also aligns with the Great Goddess energy, numerous deities, and the tides of emotion within ourselves.

Being a fan of both Hoodoo and the traditions of the African diaspora, I personally favor cowrie shells, but any type of shell may be used.

All of life evolved from the ocean. Additionally, we are always evolving personally in this lifetime, on every level: physically, emotionally, cognitively, spiritually, and so on.

Place one seashell (or more, if you wish to gift them to friends) in a cup with sea salt. As you fill the cup halfway with water, enchant the shell by saying the following nine times:

As the tides do turn and the
earth revolves, this shell is
enchanted so that I may evolve!
Much Melon Magic

Take the time today to savor a ripe melon, whether it comes from your garden or the nearby farmers’ market. Watermelon and honeydew are among the easiest to find pretty much anywhere, but there are many varieties from around the world to try. Melons make the perfect summer salad or dessert with added health benefits. Not only can you enjoy some delicious melon, but there’s an added bonus as well: collect the seeds and use them in magical workings to bring abundance, fertility, and prosperity.

Be sure to wash the melon seeds thoroughly and then set them out to dry on some towels. Once dry, store them in a glass jar in a cool place. You can include the seeds in satchels, jars, and other ingredient-based magical workings. Some varieties of melon produce seeds that are large and sturdy enough that you can draw symbols, words, or sigils on them with a fine-point marker.
Transforming Water

I live in a lakeside village, swim a lot, and enjoy backcountry kayaking and camping. Potable water is an issue when camping. I no longer take water for granted. When I purify water for backcountry consumption, I always pause to thank and bless the element of water.

Nibi Wabo, the First Nations water blessing ceremony usually done on a February new moon, reminds us to give thanks to water in ceremony. When you brush your teeth, give thanks. When you drink tea or coffee, give thanks. When you shower, bathe, or wash your hands, give thanks. Use these Ho’oponopono words (an ancient Hawaiian practice for forgiveness, reconciliation, and making relationships right) to bless water. Each time you use water, say:

I’m sorry, Forgive me,
Thank you, I love you.

Your gratitude raises the vibration of water in a healthy way and acknowledges the gift of this element.

Heartwings Love Notes 1046 Working with Control Issues

Heartwings says, “Each day is different and needs your complete attention.”

The first skill a baby learns is that of control, primarily control of muscles. Learning to roll over is an important experience. Later, it’s sitting up, crawling, and finally, standing and walking. If you are a parent, do you remember how your child enjoyed dropping things over the edge of his or her highchair? A face full of glee would blossom on my children’s faces as they did so, and it never varied, regardless which of my five children it was. Toilet training was another control hurdle, and learning to sit still, another. As adults most of us are pretty well able to control ourselves.

That’s unless Parkinson’s comes into your life, and control is something very difficult to maintain, at least for some. Speaking for myself, I find I struggle with it pretty much every day. Though I have avoided the “shakes” so far, I still have difficulties with balance and with using my hands and fingers. Peeling carrots or other vegetables, for instance, with any accuracy, takes around four times as long as it once did. While typing on my computer is doable, it goes more slowly than formerly. There are things I used to do without thinking, like shuffling cards, that are now impossible for me to do.

One of the worst aspects of my condition, however, is none of these. It is emotional control. I can burst into tears over something I might once have brushed off or ignored. I can find myself depressed for no reason I can tell, or make sense of. Being able to contain tears when affected in a difficult way is one of the most important aspects of emotional control. One learns this in school, to the tune of “cry baby,” or even in families. I well remember my stern grandmother ignoring my tears. Or a parent saying these familiar words: “Stop your crying or I’ll give you something to cry about.” Perhaps some of my readers can remember similar experiences.

I’m not saying these words to complain, but rather to set the stage. I now understand that control is actually an illusion. We may think we are in control, however, if our bodies choose otherwise, we are not. It is an odd experience, and an uncomfortable one as well, to find oneself unable to avoid a cascade of unwanted tears. It is frustrating to not be able to shuffle the cards. Much of what I once took for granted in my daily life has now become a matter of effort or even finally of surrender. Many things I once did without thinking, I no longer can do, or I must find alternative or new ways to accomplish them.

A key word here is surrender. To keep trying to do what is no longer possible is not smart. To let go and seek new ways to function is best learned as soon as possible. It is said the brain grows when we learn new ways, so that’s a good outcome, and perhaps the potential blessing to come from my or even your current experiences.

May you meet your challenges with courage and welcoming grace.

Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

How Your Thoughts Create Your Reality

By harnessing the power of your imagination, you can realize your dreams.

The law of attraction is surprisingly simple: Like attracts like. It becomes a bit more complicated when it comes to training our minds to think in ways that will bring what we desire into our lives. The term “self-fulfilling prophecy” describes the same law. This well-known term explains that we create the circumstances our mind dwells upon, whether positive or negative. So our goal is to practice consistent presence of mind to make sure our thoughts are always directed toward the positive and what we want to create.

A key to the process is the word “frequency.” This is true for two reasons: 1) The frequency you use when you passionately dwell upon or revisit a thought, dream, desire, or goal provides the energy your musings need for creation; and 2) just like a radio station broadcasts on a certain frequency, like the radio you must be “tuned in” to receive it. This means preparing for the arrival of your dream on every possible level — material, physical, and spiritual. You don’t have to know how it will come into your life, just trust that it will. Your job is to lay the groundwork, follow any leads you can find, and prepare for its arrival. This can mean cleaning out your garage to make space for a new car, taking a tour of a model home to get the feel of it in order to feed your fantasies, or thinking of what you want in a mate and then living up to that list yourself.

Just like with any skill, the law of attraction must be practiced. We must decide what makes us feel abundant and use our imagination to create the feeling. It isn’t enough to just want something — you must use the power of your thoughts to attract it. A series of choices is what brings us everything in our lives right now, every moment. When we know the direction in which we want our choices to take us, it is as if we’ve placed an order with the universe. We can then await its arrival with joyful anticipation. If we find ways to experience our dreams right now, we make creating joy a treasure hunt in which the seeking is just as much fun as the finding.

Heartwings Love Notes 1047 Catalogues are Clogging My Mailbox

Heartwings says, “Buying and shopping without being there can be easy, but not always wise.”

Every morning Stephen picks up the mail from our mailbox by the door. Some mornings all there is are catalogues. It seems that we get two or more every day. Most go directly into the trash, a few are put aside to glance at later and occasionally we order something.
Some of them are actually laughable. Imagine paying a thousand dollars for-guess what? A fountain pen! Can you believe it? Just one…and you can purchase a device to store these treasures as you collect them. Imagine loaning someone one of your precious pens and having them walk away with it. Of course, to me the idea of paying that much for a pen is an anathema, because of all the ways that much money could be spent to benefit those in need.
There is one catalogue that specializes in travel gear. Though I don’t anticipate traveling any distance soon, I admit it’s fun to peruse. Another is a catalogue that specialize in hard-to-find items: perfumes my mother used to wear or useful items considered too old fashioned to be desirable. One other specializes in wind toys and weather gadgets. That one is always enjoyable and it doesn’t come often.
There are occasionally good bargains to be had from stores we do patronize. Clothing bought from several of them will last us well. Holiday food gifts are often welcomed by family and friends. If one can resist the all too cute items that will probably get put into regift circulation, one will not spend money unnecessarily. I am not condemning all catalogues, just their frequency.
Once upon a time there were one or two fat catalogues a year from Sears and Roebuck. They presented an opportunity to homemakers and others to shop at leisure without visiting the store. People could see something they wanted and actually save up for it. (No such thing as a credit card in those days.) One nickname for the catalogue was “a wish book.” I had a funny experience once with one, some fifty plus years ago when I ordered some material that appeared attractive in it. When it arrived, it turned out in reality to look awful. As I recall it had to do with the size and color of the print.
I don’t think I ever wore the dress I made from it. I did, however take pleasure as a child, in ordering gifts for my family from the one catalogue that arrived prior to Christmas. I felt quite grown up choosing from its pages. Today, with the plethora of online shopping opportunities, one would expect catalogues to fade away. Such has not been the case-quite the opposite. Nevertheless, were it not for catalogues, we might seldom get any mail except for bills, so I am grateful for them. As well, they, plus the appeals from various charities, probably help to keep the post office afloat.

May your choices be wise and well chose.

Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

What Does Being Spiritual Look Like?

Your spirit is asking you to look deeper in your search for what you want.

The idea that we have to suffer or live in poverty in order to be spiritual is an old one and can be found in the belief systems of many philosophies. Most of us carry this idea around subconsciously, and we may be holding ourselves back from financial or emotional well-being, believing that this is what we must do in order to be virtuous, spiritually awake, or feel less guilty for the suffering of others.

While it’s true that there can be a spiritual purpose to experiencing a lack of material well-being, it is rarely intended to be a permanent or lifelong experience. What we are meant to find when material or emotional resources are in short supply is that there is more to our lives than the physical realm. Intense relationships and material abundance can distract us from the subtler realm of the spirit, so a time of deficiency can be spiritually awakening. However, once we recognize the realm of spirit, and remember to hold it at the center of our lives, there is no reason to dwell in poverty or emotional isolation. In fact, once our connection to spirit is fully intact, we feel so compelled to share our abundance that lack becomes a thing of the past.

If you find that you are experiencing suffering in some area of your physical life, perhaps your spirit is asking you to look deeper in your search for what you want. For example, if you want money so that you can experience the feeling of security but money keeps eluding you, your spirit may be asking you to understand that security is not to be found through money. Security comes from an unshakable connection to your soul. Once you make that connection, money will probably flow more easily into your life. If relationships elude you, your spirit may be calling you to recognize that the love you seek is not to be found in another person. And yet, ironically, once you find the love, your true love may very well appear. If you feel stuck in suffering to live a spiritual life, try to spend some time writing about it. The root of the problem will appear and it may not be what you expected. Remember, the Universe wants you to be happy.

Not Using Mint? Find Out What You Are Missing

Curious about using mint in your recipes? Mint (Mentha) is a perennial herb indigenous to Europe, with over 25 different species across the globe. One of the most common varieties is peppermint (Mentha aquatic), which is more potent and typically associated with culinary and medicinal use.

Menthol, the active ingredient in mint that gives it its characteristic flavor, is more concentrated in peppermint (Mentha piperata) than in spearmint (Menthe spicata) and is considered an aid in digestion by providing calm to muscles of the stomach and intestine. It is a great aid for when the stomach is uncomfortably full, and encapsulated forms of peppermint oil help with GI spasms. Oil of peppermint has also been used to stop the growth of bacterial, viral and fungal infections, and to address asthma, sinusitis, allergy-related colds and other respiratory issues. Nutritionally, peppermint is a good source of vitamins A and C, along with manganese, and copper.

Opt for fresh mint as it provides more flavor and look for leaves that are bright green. Place several leaves in a pitcher with ice water for a refreshing summer beverage. Wrap the mint leaves in a damp paper towel that loosely holds the leaves and place them in a sealed plastic bag. They should keep fresh for several days in the fridge.

Essential Oils: Lavender Oil
~Andrew Weil, M.D.

Lavender oil which comes frome the leaves and flowers of the lavender plant (Lavandula officinalis / Lavandula angustifolia) has been popular since Roman times, when a pound of flowers was worth a farmer’s wages for a month. The word “lavender” is thought to come from the Latin word “lavare” which means “to wash,” and may refer to an ancient practice of adding lavender to wash water for its pleasant scent. Lavender has been used for thousands of years and is even mentioned in the Bible.

Uses For Lavender Oil:
Sleep: Lavender oil is widely used to promote sleep and relaxation. One clinical study found that ingested capsules of lavender oil had a significant ability to ease anxiety and sleep disturbances. Other studies have found similar effects on sleep and anxiety when lavender oil is used in aromatherapy.

Headaches: Lavender oil can be comforting for people suffering migraine, and is safe for children with these headaches. One study, published in 2012, showed that out of 129 headache episodes, 92 responded entirely or partially to lavender, and a three-month long randomized controlled clinical trial showed a reduction in the frequency and severity of migraines among participants who used it. To use lavender oil for headaches massage a few drops into your skin or add two to four drops to two to three cups of boiling water and inhale the vapors.

Pain: Some studies have shown that lavender oil can help relieve chronic pain, although the results have not been long lasting. Lavender also may reduce labor pains and pain stemming from burns. One study found that inhaling lavender helped temporarily ease menstrual cramps. Lavender can also be used to soothe insect bites.

Lavender oil may enhance the effects of sedatives and sleep medications, causing excessive sleepiness. Because there isn’t enough information about the safety of use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, women probably should avoid ingesting lavender at those times. Some research has linked the use of lavender oil to abnormal breast growth among young boys (which disappears after use stops) so boys who haven’t yet reached puberty should avoid using lavender oil and products containing it. Effects on young girls are unknown. Ingesting lavender may cause constipation, headache and increased appetite; using lavender on skin may cause irritation.

Dr. Weil’s View On Lavender Oil:
I enjoy using dry bundles of lavender as a natural air freshener and drops of the essential oil on wool balls in the clothes dryer. I also use lavender as a culinary herb, sprinkling bits of it on grilled fish and vegetables. Lavender is great to use for infusing water, giving it a unique flavor and providing an alternative to iced tea on a hot day.

Is It Desire or Distraction?

Don’t forget to enjoy the beauty right in front of you.

When it comes to the things we want, there always seems to be an endless list. No matter how many times we get something off that list, we add new things to replace it. In life, this drama of wanting and getting and wanting is all part of the dance. The things we want motivate us to get up and get them.

And yet, at the same time, we can torment ourselves with our wanting, especially when we want something we can’t have or can’t find. It is in cases like these that it might be fruitful to entertain the idea that maybe what you really want is right in front of you. Maybe you are using this desire you can’t fulfill to distract you from truly engaging the blessings you already have. It may seem like that doesn’t make sense, yet we do it all the time. It may be easier to see in other people than to see it in ourselves. We have all heard our friends wishing they were more this or less that, and looking at them we see clearly that they are everything they are wishing they were. We know people who have wonderful partners and yet envy yours. We wish we could give these people a look at their situations from our perspective so that they could see that what they want really is right in front of them.

It’s not too far-fetched to consider that we might be victims of the same folly. It can be scary to have what we want. We get caught up in the chase and forget to enjoy the beauty right in front of us — like a child who never wants the toy she has in her hand but always the one just out of her reach. Take a moment today to consider the many things you are holding in the palm of your hand and how you might best play with them.

Ghost Hunting Theories
The Grand Canyon’s Unsolved Mysteries

Shadow of a Man
This photo above was taken by someone using an internet live cam from the canyon, as he looked for UFOs, but what he found was a giant shadow of a person (at least it looks that) – bottom left quadrant of the photo. It could be some kind of soil erosion, but a few ponder if perhaps something was set up long ago to cast a shadow like that, such as the geoglyphs of Nazca or the Intaglios of Blythe, California. This is only one of many oddities at the Grand Canyon.

Giant Mummies in Egyptian Tomb
In 1909, the Arizona Gazette featured an article about a supposed find of an Egyptian tomb in the Grand Canyon.

The reports were that a man named Kinkaid discovered a cave up on the wall of the Canyon while riding the waterway. He stumbled into supposedly grand caverns within that housed giant mummies, riches, and lots of art that appeared to be either Asian or Egyptian.

This is a sample of what the rather hard-to-find “Kinkaid” said;

“The idol almost resembles Buddha, though the scientists are not certain as to what religious worship it represents. Taking into consideration everything found thus far, it is possible that this worship most resembles the ancient people of Tibet.” He also stated that he had found an unknown gray metal, resembling platinum, as well as tiny carved heads, scattered on the floor. Urns bore “mysterious hieroglyphics, the key to which the Smithsonian Institute hopes yet to discover.” In another room he found mummies: “Some of the mummies are covered with clay, and all are wrapped in a bark fabric.”

Considering this was in 1909, it seems to remarkably resemble other finds of ancient giants in Death Valley and other locations. Their script and their art appeared Egyptian or Asian to those who do not know that the ancient race of giants apparently influenced worldwide script and art so, in fact, Egyptian art would resemble giant influence.

There’s been a lot of question as to whether this is a true story or not. The newspaper did mention the Smithsonian sweeping in and the story going underground. We know how that goes –

Given strict guidelines on where you can go in the Canyon, we may never know for sure, but interestingly there are whole sections in the Canyon with pathways named for Egyptian titles.

Missing Newlyweds: Glen and Bessie Hyde
In 1928, newly married couple, Glen and Bessie Hyde, embarked on a honeymoon ride down the Colorado, went into the Grand Canyon and never were seen again. The couple’s boat was found fully stocked, but the couple was nowhere in sight. Did they hike off and get lost? The case has never been solved.

Kolb Skeleton
In 1976, a male skeleton of a young adult age was found in the home of photography Emery Kolb who lived on the Rim. It was thought they might be the remains of the missing Glen Hyde, but the skeleton was too young. So, henceforth, it has been dubbed the Kolb Skeleton and his background is still unsure.

UFO crash
This article caught my attention – please don’t take it too seriously, but it is a delight!

Flagstaff, Ariz. – A team of experts called in to examine strange debris at the bottom of the Grand Canyon discovered the wreckage of a UFO that crashed a mind boggling 4,000 years ago!

The scientists, members of a highly secret joint military task force on UFOs, inspected the spherical craft and found it to be in good condition despite its rough landing and incredible age.

The relic is made of an unknown metallic substance and emits low levels of radiation, according to leaks from highly placed sources. It was immediately removed from the site and is now in a secret location.

My contacts tell me this craft is definitely of extraterrestrial origin and without a doubt carried a crew of 12 to 20 individuals, said Dr. Henry Leaumont, a California based astronomer who contacted this reporter after he was shown secret air Force documents relating to the find.

Carbon dating shows it crash landed at the base of the canyon around 2,000 B.C.

Cabin features suggest that the crew members were much like humans, although significantly smaller. They apparently breathed oxygen, guided their atom powered craft with a magnetic steering system and carried supplies of food and water on board.

According to reports filed by the scientific team, the spacecraft was lodged in limestone rubble at the base of the canyon not far from an area called Comanche Point.

A thorough inspection of the landing site revealed that the spacecraft’s occupants left their ship and lived near it for a number of years after it crashed.

The finding proves the existence of a space alien colony on this planet nearly 3,500 years before Columbus!

This impression is confirmed by Indian cave paintings made at the time, the Air Force secret documents attest. The paintings, found near the crash site, show strange humanoid creatures with bulbous heads. Experts believe these creatures were the same aliens who arrived in the ancient UFO.

The secret report said all traces of alien occupation disappeared within 50 years or so of the crash date. There is no indication of what might have happened to the extraterrestrials, the documents reveal.

The ship is made of an extremely light metallic fiber, Dr. Leaumont said.

It measurers about 50 feet across at its widest point and it is 102 feet long. It’s an incredible find – the latest in a series of artifacts collected secretly and hidden away in government UFO study centers.

There’s a lot of official concern about keeping this latest discovery a secret. They’ve been covering up the truth about alien contacts for 50 years and they’re not going to stop now. They want to study this thing, but they want it only for themselves.

Who knows what scientists might learn if they’d share this priceless find with the rest of the world?”

Shadow Animal or Skinwalker?
Skinwalker: (Wikipedia) is a person with the supernatural ability to turn into any animal he or she desires. Similar lore can be found in cultures throughout the world and is often referred to as shapeshifting by anthropologists.

Shadow person/animal: (Wikipedia) Are supernatural shadow-like figures of both modern folklore and paranormal popular culture that believers claim appear as dark humanoid (or animal) forms or evasive specters seen mostly in peripheral vision.

A friend and her significant other (we’ll call them Jane and Joe), had an experience that so impressed me by their story, that I sat them down to get the details. This time I took notes instead of curling up with my feet tucked under me being spooked by the description. Here is their story:

It was July 2006. The couple was leaving the Grand Canyon Park to head south towards Williams for their hotel room. They were driving in a car, heading out the park entrance around 9:30 p.m. They were less than a mile from the park on this unusually chilly night. In front of them was an SUV perhaps 8 car lengths ahead. They saw the brake lights go off on the SUV and Jane warned Joe, who was driving. They both noted the SUV swerve into the oncoming lane as if something were in the roadway.

Jane witnessed something very huge and black, taller than the SUV, its shoulder area seeming to be about even with the top of the SUV. They had only a couple seconds before they came up on the spot themselves. Joe swerved the car into the oncoming lane as he witnessed this huge black creature threateningly close to the car. As he did this, Jane in the passenger side looked up to this gigantic black mass. Its head was well above the height of the car and she caught its eyes as they passed by it. Her immediate reaction was one of impending doom and threat. She felt its massive size and power and felt completely inadequate in their car in comparison.

Joe slowed down, thinking of turning around, when he looked into the rear view mirror and saw the car behind him swerving the same way in the road, just missing this huge black…creature. Oddly, the lights of that car could create no detail on this black mass either.

They both continued down the road, confused and upset by the encounter. Later, they passed by some elk in a field and their car lights hit them and showing exactly what they were including the details and shapes of them and the foggy wisps of their cold breath from their flaring nostrils.

It wasn’t until Jane was describing the story to me that I realized some strange features. One was the SUV in front of them slammed on their brakes. Had those people seen this thing in their headlights in the distance, they would have braked slower. They didn’t see it, even with headlights, until they were upon it. Jane described a steep embankment near the roadway that seemed to have entrapped this thing, forcing it to follow the road to get out. At least, that was the sense of the situation. Also, their own headlights showed nothing more than a black mass. No color, no detail, no definition. Given that it was threatening their place in their lane, this creature should have been seen, as the elk had been seen by the headlights. As well, the size was exceptional. If a typical SUV is perhaps 6’ tall and the slope of what seemed to be shoulders was even with it, then that would make this creature perhaps over 7’ high! Jane commented several times about how massive and threatening it seemed.

What it was they saw that evening on the roadway, they’ll never know. The memory still haunts them as a singularly strange and eerie encounter. Whether it was a skinwalker or possibly some kind of shadow animal (like a shadow person) is unknown. The intriguing thing is how shadow people are caught out of the corner of your eye, you turn to see them and they’re described as completely black and solid-appearing without detail, and bring with them a sense of impending doom and threat. Similar, huh?

Here’s How to Start Lucid Dreaming

Controlling your own dreams can be more empowering than you think.

We all know that sleep is a big deal. The cognitive, physical, and emotional benefits of snoozing are profound. But simply closing your eyes and shutting your brain off for a bit isn’t enough. Approximately an hour and a half into your nightly slumber, you enter the last (and most important) stage of the sleep cycle: REM, or rapid eye movement. The acronym references the sleep phase defined by the eyes’ speedy twitches beneath their lids, which track the vivid mental images in our minds while we dream. Although our bodies are technically off-duty when we sleep, our minds are extremely alert during the REM phase. This irony was not lost on scientists, which is why this phase is referred to as paradoxical sleep. In fact, some of our brain functions during REM are identical to those that occur in wakefulness. While all this mental activity sounds exhausting, it’s actually essential. And during this time, there’s another facet to dreaming worth exploring — lucid dreams, which is a form of taking control of your own unconsciousness.

Though scientists still don’t know why dreaming is so important for humans, studies suggest that those deprived of REM sleep suffer may from increased risk of obesity, memory problems, and increased inflammation. It’s clear that REM sleep adds to our physical quality of life, so it makes sense why one might want to delve further into their subconscious through lucid dreaming, or dreaming with the awareness that you’re asleep. The practice’s TikTok hashtag alone has close to 500 million views on videos that encourage and instruct viewers on how to tap into their subconscious mind.

While analyzing your sex dreams or looking into why you may have no dreams at all can inform your waking life, exploring lucid dreams can help you feel more authoritative in your dream state. Eventually, you can begin controlling your dreams by doing things like opening specific conversations or even walking away from nightmare-like situations. Ahead, learn how to access your psyche through lucid dreaming.

In his e-book Dreams, Michael Breus PhD, a Los Angeles-based clinical psychologist, defines a lucid dream as a dream in which “the dreamer is aware of the fact that he or she is dreaming, and often can even manipulate or control their dream as it unfolds.”

With this awareness of your subconscious world, you can work towards having more agency over your dreams. So if you’re not in the mood to chase a murderer down a dark alley, you can actually shift the narrative. Or maybe you decide to switch up the story altogether and propel yourself into a completely different area of your subconscious with a new setting, new characters, and a new theme. You can decide where you go, and what you’ll do when you get there.

The practice of lucid dreaming is quite old — ancient, in fact. The phenomenon has been documented since classical antiquity (Aristotle himself mentioned the phenomena in his 350 B.C. treatise, On Dreams), with interest steadily increasing over time. Since then, sleep and its phenomena have become a popular topic in modern science. And now that the conversation is more mainstream — with growing support from the scientific community — the practice of lucid dreaming is no longer reserved for those experienced in the supernatural.

Why would someone want to control their dreams?
Each day, we encounter innumerable pieces of stimuli, and lucid dreaming can help you unlock the door of your subconscious where these encounters are often retained. We also tuck away some of our most life-changing memories, powerful emotions, and creative musings in this subconscious landscape, so ironically, accessing your dream world can actually help you realize your honest reality.

The subconscious may seem dangerous and unpredictable, but for many, lucid dreaming is actually a lot less scary than regular dreaming. During a normal dream, you cruise into your emotional inner world as if you’re strapped to a rollercoaster. It could be fun, but it also could be terrifying. And unlike sleep paralysis — an often frightening phenomenon when the body remains paralyzed in a half-dream, half-awake state if abruptly woken out of REM sleep — Daniel A. Barone MD, an associate attending neurologist at New York-Presbyterian and associate professor of neurology at Weill Cornell Medical College, explains that lucid dreaming refers specifically to a style of dreaming, not a sleep experience at large. While lucid dreaming, you’re the one in the driver’s seat. What’s the theme? Where does dream take place? Who is part of the story?

In addition to deepening your relationship with yourself — and possibly your own psychic abilities — lucid dreaming can potentially help those who are spiritual to communicate with loved ones who have crossed over. In many cultures and religions, spirits rely on conduits to deliver messages. But since your subconscious world isn’t tethered to form, loved ones more often visit us in dreams. During a lucid dream, you can actually engage with these entities — and, because your senses remain engaged, you may even enjoy the comforting feeling of a warm embrace.

What does lucid dreaming feel like?
Because you’re aware that you are both sleeping and dreaming in your lucid dream (and that you are actually able to influence what happens in that dream), Cheung says that the experience may feel intense and that your emotions might run high. The dream may feel too real and vivid, which may cause the lucid dream to collapse and result in you waking up.

Becoming aware of consciousness, either in a dream or reality, can be unsettling, too. Dr. Fraga tells Allure, “We tend to process uncomfortable emotional and psychological experiences in our dreams,” and as such, these memories may be triggered during our sleep. Further, Fraga explains, “If the dream affects the person’s ability to get a good night’s sleep, that can affect mental health, especially for people with anxiety or depression who may have trouble sleeping.”

How can I start lucid dreaming?
Ani Ferlise, an avid lucid dreamer, astrology expert, and founder of spirituality brand Kozmic Ryder, says opening your mind is the first step to success: “You begin [lucid dreaming] by simply turning your awareness to the idea of it. This wakes up your subconscious to the practice.” Ferlise also explains that we actually strengthen our lucid dreaming abilities when we’re awake, so she suggests becoming more aware of your physical surroundings by observing small details about your own body and your surroundings, such as taking note of your hands or feet throughout the day. Activating the senses and grounding oneself also promotes lucid dreaming, and Ferlise encourages using a dream journal to jumpstart your practice. (Her own Lucid Dream Kit is a thoughtfully curated collection of tools Ferlise says can enhance subconscious exploration and get you in the headspace to lucid dream, like an amethyst, calming tea, and an essential oil blend).

You also might want to try reality testing, which Cheung says is the most famous lucid dreaming technique. (If you’ve seen Inception, you’re probably already familiar.) Reality testing is performing tests during the day to question your current reality in the effort to transfer that action to your lucid dreams to help you flag if you’re asleep or not. She provides the example of pressing one index finger into the other hand’s palm. She explains that if you’re dreaming, the index finger might pass through your palm. If you’re awake, it would touch your palm in a realistic way.

“The more reality checks you do while awake, the more likely you are to do them while dreaming,” she says.

Are there any risks of lucid dreaming? Is it safe?
The TL;DR: It is absolutely safe to lucid dream. Cheung says that lucid dreams are not only perfectly safe but can actually be beneficial to your creativity and health.

“It’s the ultimate high,” she says. “You [have] infinite potential in your lucid dream, [where] you can be or do anything. Once you have experienced that limitless world where anything is possible for you, you are far more likely to bring that confidence and creativity, and sense of bold adventure into your waking life.”

Dr. Brues states in his book that a study done in Liverpool showed lucid dreamers are more creative, more apt to problem-solving, and more successful in writing metaphors than non-lucid dreamers. Added health benefits, studies show, include easing anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

There aren’t any negative effects with lucid dreaming itself, but instead, there may be negative effects of the sleep-depriving techniques to induce them. Cheung does caution those who suffer from depression might want to stay away from lucid dreaming as it can cause some emotional intensity that can lead to feeling worse. And just to set the record straight on one of the biggest misconceptions about lucid dreaming: a dream death does not trigger a physical death. You’ll just wake up, safe and sound… or keep right on dreaming.

Your subconscious mind — vast, mysterious, and eternal — is a huge part of your identity. Through lucid dreaming, you can learn how to tap into your complete multidimensionality. Just be sure to practice it safely and to check in with yourself about how you’re feeling during the process.

Coach Gilberto Chapter 22
by Stephen Halpert

Several days later Diana Rain, looking proud, handed Maria and Gilberto two professionally designed business cards reading Rain & Willabee Confidential Inquiries.
Gilberto nodded. “Nice, looks high class.”
Rain nodded. “Yes, makes our partnership real and official.” She smiled happily. “As Cy would say, Gives us a stronger point of purpose.”
Gilberto rubbed his chin. ” Maybe that’s what he needs.”
Gilberto saw an all too familiar shape float across the wall.
Rain nodded. “No doubt. Though he usually spends his days in the periodical room at the Public Library. Likes breezing through a dozen or so magazines and daily papers.”
Gilberto grinned. “Must be interesting to the patrons when they see pages flutter.”
“I’m glad Cy wants to keep up with life as he knows it and not just lose himself back in time, wandering about in ancient Greece or Rome, like so many he knows in spirit like to do.”
Gilberto shook his head. “They do that? Dead people can go back in time that way?”
“Oh yes, according to Cy, apparently once one passes into spirit, time melts and the entire universe opens. Apparently, several of the spooks he pals around with have had sojourns, checking out the games at the Roman Coliseum; one even clamed to have looked Nero straight in the eye. Some even return to ancient Greece. Could you imagine being able to sit and listen to Plato or Socrates deliver their dialogues first hand?”
Rain’s device chimed. “Oh hello, yes I’m here with Gilberto and Maria now. Do stop over. Yes, Cy’s here too.” She gave their address.
She turned to Gilberto and Maria. “Hope you don’t mind a séance.”
Maria smiled. “How wonderful. Yes, of course. Fascinating concept. Now if only the living could take advantage of some of those afterlife experiences.”
Again, Gilberto watched the prominent shadow move across the wall.
Rain nodded to Maria. “We’re on it,” she grinned. “Mainly by using meditation and visualization techniques, Cy says one can access the astral. Of course I’ve never done that but Cy sure makes it seem convincing.”
While Rain was talking, Gilberto again sensed Cy’s spirit presence his energy noticeably changing, evoking a different vibration from what it had been moments before.
Gilberto shook his head. “So much to consider.” As he concentrated, he had an image of Willabee, clearly seeing his piercing dark blue eyes and prominent facial features. Gilberto realized he was right there with them, absorbing every word.
“Any idea how you’ll start your investigation?” Maria asked.
“Not yet,” Rain said. “My sense is to start poking around and see what happens. I know we have to bring his murderer to justice. That’s a given.”
Gilberto nodded. “Maybe put some pressure on all the women affiliated with Houndstooth. If one of them sees Cy for real it might work, causing the reaction you’re looking for.”
The doorbell to the condo rang and Mrs. Viola Craigmore made her entrance. She was a stout lady, perhaps in her seventies, with blueish hair, and a kindly smile. In a businesslike way she shook hands all around as they introduced themselves.
“What can I do for you?” Maria asked.
“If you have one,” the medium said, “I’d like a table we could sit around for the séance.
Maria got things set up and they all seated themselves around the table. Mrs. Craigmore got out a large purple candle that matched her purple silk blouse, and took a dogeared bible from her dark green shoulder bag.
“Please put your hands on the table, little fingers and thumbs touching,” she said. They did so. She opened her bible, read a verse or two aloud, and began her ritual with a series of “Oms.”
Gilberto wondered what if anything was going to happen. His nose itched, and he couldn’t let go to scratch it. He feared he was going to sneeze.
Then in a low voice she called out, “Cyrus Willabee, make your presence known. Enter here into flesh.”
Gilberto, Maria and Rain sat transfixed. The medium’s body lurched, her face changed, and her voice dropped. “Rainy my darling,” she began. “Oh the love I feel for you. You are my adorable everything.” Then Cy was gone and the voice and face of the medium changed again.
The elderly woman seemed to transform; her voice dropped to a breathy sensual hush. “Gilberto my darling it’s me Rosalia. Surely you remember fun in my father’s convertible, by the seashore.”
Maria’s eyes widened. “Rosalia? I don’t recall your mentioning her….”
“I want you Gilberto. Your amazing big boy body, your hands all over me. We feasted upon each so before the flood carried me away.”
“Really,” Maria said. ” Flood? What flood?”
With that Mrs. Craigmore bolted upward from her chair and flung herself on Gilberto, their bodies falling backward, crashing to the floor. Totally taken aback, Gilberto tried to squirm out from under the stout, elderly woman. But she clutched at his shirt, bouncing up and down. “Kiss me darling,” begged the exuberant Rosalia. “Kiss me! Smother me in your deep passionate kisses.”
Gilberto couldn’t seem to escape her. He tried wriggling out from under her, but to no avail. Then somehow the buttons of her silky purple blouse tore open, revealing her large, sturdy brassiere.
Maria and Rain hauled at his shoulders, yanking him from beneath the flailing medium.
The spirit of Rosalia sobbed once and let go. “Goodbye Gilberto. Our love lives eternally.” Then she was gone, and a surprised Mrs. Craigmore sat up, blushing. She looked down at herself and clutched her blouse around her.
“Well I never!” she huffed. “Where did that hussy come from.”
“Can I get you anything? A glass of water?” Maria asked as she helped her up.
The medium looked around and spotted her candle and her bible where they had fallen. “No, thank you. I think I’ll be going.” She picked them up and marched to the door. Fixing Gilberto with a glare, she pursed her lips and shook her head. Then she opened the door and closed it behind her.
Rain, Gilberto and Maria looked at one another and began to laugh. Gilberto thought he heard someone else joining in with a hearty guffaw. Rain stopped a moment. “I think Cy enjoyed that,” she gasped out, then collapsed again into giggles.

Coach Gilberto, Chapter 23
by Stephen Halpert

The medium’s departure was a relief to all. Rain and Maria helped a dazed Gilberto onto the couch. “Sit down and relax,” Maria said gently. “You took a nasty fall.”
Gilberto sighed and blinked his eyes. He shook his head to try to clear it. In his mind’s eye he could still see that young girl with whom he had shared intimate times during his teen years.
She threw him a kiss. She was still that wild adolescent from decades ago. In his head Gilberto heard. “Oh Baby, I’m back finally. I’ve missed you for so long. You’re not married, are you?”
“Yes, I am to Maria,” he blurted. “I love Maria.”
“What,” Maria asked.” Hearing her name, she turned toward him. “Did you say something to me.”
“I just told her we were married.”
Maria sighed. “She’s still here?”
“Yes, and I don’t know what to do.”
Maria and Rain looked at each other. “Any suggestions?” Maria asked. “Does Cy have any thoughts?”
Rain nodded. “I’ll ask.” She was silent for a minute, then spoke. “He says he’ll do what he can. As a last resort, she might be banished by clapping three times.”
Meanwhile, Gilberto was doing his best to get her out of his head. He breathed, focused, and tried to clear his mind. Visualizing light like he practiced when he meditated seemed to help. He began thinking of soccer plays, filling his mind with them.
He managed briefly to keep her out, however as soon as he went back to his normal frame of mind she came back.
“Oh Baby,” she giggled. “Remember when we’d drive to the beach and spend those summer nights under that shabby old rowboat?”
Gilberto sighed and shook his head.
“She’s still here?” Maria asked.
Gilberto frowned. “She was my girlfriend in high school. We were madly in love. Then one day we had a big fight over something trivial, and she took her family’s boat out for a sail to cool off. A sudden storm came out and she was swept out to sea.” Sorrow rose in him as he recalled the time. “Neither Rosalia nor the boat were ever found.”
“Well, that’s a sad story,” Maria said. “But no wonder she’s back: unfinished business.”
He nodded. “Feels like she’s moved into some place in my mind.”
“Yes,” Rain said. “Cy’s done the same with me. However, with us it’s quite different. He can come and go freely, and he doesn’t intrude. It’s kind of like we’re hanging out together. I’m just used to his energetic presence.”
Rosalia’s youthful, curvy body filled his mind’s inner vision. Gilberto sighed. Then she spoke again. “Baby aren’t you going to introduce me to your wife?”
He looked at Maria and raised his eyebrows. “She wants me to introduce her to you.”
“Go for it,” Maria said.
He gulped. “Maria this is Rosalia. She’s here in my head.”
Maria nodded. “Hi Rosalia.” Maria said. “Sorry for your sudden death.” She smiled. “I’ll bet you and Gilberto had a blast while you were alive.”
Gilberto shook his head. “I feel weird about this,” he said, “but she’s answering you. I’ll repeat what she’s saying. He went on: I loved seeing him flirt in the schoolyard. Always so cool and I knew deep down he was mine for always.”
Gilberto sighed. “That was over 40 years ago.”
Rain sat back in her chair. “Cy says time means very little to spirits.” She grinned at Gilberto. “Nice to know how popular you still are with the ladies. She probably still thinks it’s then, not all these years later.”
“This isn’t funny,” Gilberto said through gritted teeth.
He heard her voice clearly in his mind. “Oh, come on Baby, loosen up a little.” To his dismay, with his inner vision, he saw her pull off some clothes and dance enticingly.
His face reddened. “Maria, I’m trapped,”
Rosalia stopped dancing and her face crumpled. “No, Baby I’m the one who’s trapped. Remember I don’t have a body.”
Gilberto relayed her words to Maria.
Maria shook her head. “Attempted seduction,” she said. “Next thing she’ll try to jump into bed with us.”
His face reddened. “Maria that’s not one bit funny.” Then he heard a gleeful– “Oh Baby, tell her yes, for sure. We’ll have an amazing time.”
“No,” Gilberto cried out. “Dead or alive no! Maria, help me. She’s gone too far.”
Maria clapped her hands hard three times and to his great relief, Gilberto’s mind was once again clear. He sighed and smiled.
Maria looked at him, her face anxious. “Did it work?”
Rain leaned forward. “Yes, tell us.”
Gilberto sighed, “Thanks be to Cy, yes. I am so grateful. Now if she will only stay away!”
Maria laughed. “Let’s hope. But if not, we’ll just keep doing it.”
Rain chuckled and gave him a sly look. “Be honest, Gilberto, wasn’t it fun getting reacquainted with your old girlfriend?”
Gilberto threw up his hands. “Rain this is all new for me. Before all this I just assumed that dead people were dead–in heaven eating ice cream.” He opened his mouth to say more. Then Maria cleared her throat and put her finger to her lips. She pointed to Rain.
Diana Rain was obviously not paying attention to what was being said. Her gaze was turned inward, as if she were listening to something only she could hear.
After a short silence, she spoke. “Cy has some information for us. He’s telling me that the astral, where spirits hang out, is very close by-always has been.
Gilberto shook his head. “I would never have believed anything like this possible before Rosalia happened back into my life.”
Maria nodded and smiled. “My grandmother used to speak with her dead relatives all the time. I never thought much about it. It was perfectly normal to me.”
Gilberto’s eyes widened. In his mind’s eye, he saw Cy, who nodded and smiled. Then he saw Cy dancing with Rosalia, only she looked older now, more grown up. They seemed locked in a trance as they danced around the room, his shape lively, animated, hers equally so. Cy turned and gave him a wink, then they danced off and his inner vision cleared.

Coach Gilberto Chapter 24
Stephen Halpert

Several days later Gilberto had a headache that wouldn’t quit “I’m fine,” he insisted to Maria despite the throbbing.
Maria knew not to argue. Instead she brought him an ice tea and kissed him gently.
“Ill be ok,” he assured her. But the headache persisted, increased. Dizziness and a foul mood overcame him.
“If you’re this way I’m taking you to the ER,” she said without saying exactly when.
“Really I’m ok, just a little spaced out. In his mind’s eye an image of Maria’s mother demanded his attention. “Call you mother,” he blurted. “Something’s up. It might be your father, not sure.”
She gave him an ice pack and proceeded to call Florida. “A voice she hadn’t recognized answered.”
Now Maria was nervous, concerned. “This is Maria Sanchez. My parents! Please.”
The woman’s voice was soothing, kindly. “Your mother is recovering from a mild stroke,” she said. “She has received medication and is resting comfortably in her own bed..”
“Who are you?”
“Helen Gilbane from Visiting Nurses. Here making sure all is well for her. Because of her advanced age we take strokes seriously and will provide her continual care.”
“My father?”
“Yes,” he’s here with her. Please hold on I’ll get him for you.”
“Thank you.”
Minutes later her father came to the phone. “How did you know to call? I was just thinking of calling you.”
“Gilberto urged me to call. How’s mom?”
“Resting comfortably. This heat is no time for crocheting. Even with the air conditioner it’s too darn hot. The humidity…”
“You could sell the house and relocate. Move back up north where’s it’s cooler.” she tried.
“She’d never give up her life in Florida.” He was emphatic. “She’s President of the Craft Council, chair’s two committees on the city council and has well attended classes in crochet at the Senior Center.”
Same old same old she thought to herself. Some things never change.
After several more minutes of polite pleasantries they said good night.. She went back into the living room and was surprised to see that Gilberto looked fine, good as new, whatever had come over him had passed.
He smiled. “You called your mother?”
Maria nodded. “She’s recovering from a mild stroke. How you picked up on that I find curious.”
He shook his head. Frowned. “You mean evetime I get a headache there’s some kind of calamity?”
She smiled. “I wouldn’t go quite that far but maybe its some kind of psychic message from you to you.”
He shook his head. “There’s got to be an easier way.
“She brought him another ice tea. “Well you could chant and meditate like the rishi’s in India. Hours a day chanting and dispersing blessings.”
“What good would all that do?”
“I’m not exactly sure but your insight might expand and you’d know instantly without getting a headache.”
He frowned. “Maria are you kidding me?”
She shook her head no. “I’m sorry Gilberto but at least to me you’re not the guru type.”
“He looked indignant. “Why not?”
“Not your style,” she said. “You’re too rough and ready. For openers Gurus never played pro soccer.”
“Always the first time,” he said.
“Besides you don’t seem to be taking it seriously. But if you did ultimately you’d be performing a great service. Disciples would bring you flowers and sit at your feet.”
“What do I want them sitting at my feet for?
She sighed and took a long slow breath. “For the karma you’d disperse to them. From what I’ve learned about manifestation after a while all you’d have to do would be to look someone in the eye and they’d receive a great blessing.”
“You’re kidding.”
“No Please,” she said. “That’s holy work. You’re not there yet.”
The doorbell rang. Ramon came in and smiled at Maria . When he saw Gilberto on the couch, he raised his brows and wondered. “Everything ok?”
Gilberto nodded. “Seems when I get a headache my intuition starts working overtime.”
Ramon nodded. “Don’t suppose you get lottery numbers?”
He shook his head. “Haven’t tried but I don’t think that’s how it works.”

Ramon nodded and looked overly serious. He lowered his voice. “Try.”
Gilberto shrugged, snickered, closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and said. “eight, three, four, nine.”
Ramon looked impressed. He jotted them down. “Just like that?”
“I guess,” Gilberto said.
“Any idea when?”
Gilberto frowned. “Haven’t got a clue, maybe tomorrow, or for that matter one day next week.”
Ramon smiled. “We’ll see. This could be the start of something big.”
“If you say so,” Gilberto frowned.
Maria came in, greeted Ramon.
“We’re gonna make a fortune,” Ramon said assuredly.
Maria warned. “Just don’\t let it go to your head. Easy come easy go.”
Gilberto nodded. He reached into his pocket and pulled out four quarters. Handing them to Ramon he said. Buy one for me too.”
Ramon nodded. “Hello soccer camp,” he grinned. Then he high fived Gilberto.

Kitty Kat’s Korner

Why Do Cats Like Being Up High?
By Susan Logan McCracken

Ever notice that your cat always hangs out up high? Learn all there is to know on cats and why they enjoy heights.

Have you noticed that a room with vaulted ceilings feels bigger? Depending on where you live, the extra vertical space may not count in the home’s square footage and property value, but it does in fact create more space. Whether or not we put a dollar value on it, vertical space is precious real estate to cats. That’s good news, because even if your home is smaller than you’d like it to be, that doesn’t mean your cat is pining for more space.

Because they can
Humans generally have no trouble moving through horizontal space, but we find vertical spaces more challenging. So we invented things like stairs, ladders and elevators to conquer these challenges. Except for elite athletes who compete in competitions like American Ninja Warrior, humans don’t generally attempt to scale heights without the help of these inventions. But the most trained human ninja is no competition for even the most inactive feline couch potato.

Cats can run up a tree almost as easily as they can run across a yard. Their claws help, but they can also run faster than humans, giving them more momentum to make it up trees much higher than any warped wall. They can jump six times their body length or about 8 feet in a single bound.

Our cat Maddie likes to hang out on top of the refrigerator. From our perspective, there is nothing up there like food or toys that would draw her there. So why does she jump up there? We’re not sure, but when we find her up there, she gives us this look that says, “Because I can.”

Because of the view
The San Bernardino National Forest has seven fire lookout towers. My husband, Mark, and I visited one of them in the mountain community we frequent. Not only was the view breathtaking, but you could see the entire county from up there, which is vitally important when you’re looking for any signs of fire.

Cats also like the view from up high. It allows them to observe their territory, escape from dangers and see who is in their environment, whether prey or predator. Staying out of reach from predators gives them the sense of security they need to sleep and eat.

“Safety is such an important thing,” says certified cat behavior consultant Marilyn Krieger, based in Redwood City, California, and author of Naughty No More! Being up high and able to look down, whether from the top of a bookshelf or cat tree, helps cats feel safe, she says.

Cats also position themselves in such a way so that it’s harder to be ambushed. A cat needs different ways of escaping. Having only one way up and one way down can be stressful to cats in a multi-cat household, so when positioning a cat tree, make sure there are multiple access points, Marilyn says.

Finding prey is also a priority, she says, adding that cats can see and hear prey as well as get a lay of the land from up high.

Because they’re flexible
Hanging out at different heights is one way for cats to communicate who is in charge. You may be surprised to learn that cats are flexible about this hierarchy. “It’s not static,” Marilyn says. “It’s one way they keep the peace.”

For instance, in the morning you may find Cat A on the top of a high bookshelf, while Cat B is on the cat tree in another room. In the afternoon, they switch places. Or if Cat A doesn’t feel good, she may rest on a lower shelf while Cat B is at the top, she says.

Starting with adolescence it’s even more important to display where they are in that flexible hierarchy so that they stay out of fights. Providing vertical territory at multiple levels is extremely important, particularly in the multi-cat home, she says.

Cat trees, bookcases or do-it-yourself shelves all satisfy your feline ninja’s instincts to jump and climb. These spaces also empower cats to observe their territory while feeling safe. The climbing and jumping also provide the much-needed exercise cats need. No cat home is complete without these vertical spaces where cats can hang out.

Because you are a sign who enjoys good food and good drink. In fact, many of you are gourmet cooks, which is why everyone wants to be invited to your table! You will particularly enjoy using your mind for amusement – reading, writing and playing games that require mental agility. You have the freedom of not worrying about justifying everything and making sure it has a practical motive. Who cares? Nevertheless, take note that this same energy that boosts social occasions, especially at home, will also attract excellent real-estate opportunities to you.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)
This is an exciting week for you! To begin with, you’re very keen to communicate to others. Not only that, you’re happy! You’re happy because your mind is alive and you’re full of ideas plus, you’re curious about everything. You want to learn new things and experience new adventure. Not only that, you will appreciate the people around you, and you will also appreciate your daily surroundings. This makes you feel blessed! (And indeed, you are.) With Mars in your sign, you’re bursting with energy. You have the physical drive and vigour to after what you want, especially fun times with others. Meanwhile, Jupiter is paving the way for warm friendships and lively interactions with groups and organizations.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
This is a happy week for you because you’re enjoying great press. You look fabulous to others, which is always reassuring. (Everyone wants to look good to others so that they can earn their respect and admiration.) This week many group discussions and conversations with others will be intriguing. It’s a great time for intellectual activities as well as discussing dreams and ideals. It will be a fast-paced week because you have lots of energy to gather new information and reach new conclusions. Many of you will enjoy shopping and buying beautiful things for yourself and loved ones. You will also be happy because you can attract money to you this week. Lots of reasons to smile!

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)
This is a happy, fun filled week for everyone; however, for Leos in particular, it’s quite spectacular! This is because the Sun and fair Venus are in your sign, which means you feel sociable! You are charming and diplomatic with everyone; and the Sun will help you to project your energy more than usual so that you are charismatic! People want to be in your presence. If you can travel or explore new places and meet new faces this will delight you. Physical activity with friends, such as athletics will appeal. You have a strong need now for personal gratification from what you do, and definitely, whatever you do will not be from a backseat position!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
This is a fun-filled week for everyone! Because Mercury is in your sign, you have a strong urge to get out and travel and take short trips. You might be involved in negotiations and contract discussions. You will love talking to others to learn new information. Even though you might seek some peace and quiet, or solitude in beautiful surroundings (like a day at a remote beach), you are still ambitious to achieve certain projects. You want the independent authority to do your own thing and be your own boss. Fortunately, the universe will give you the practical means and support to do these things. Doors will open for you. Help from others will be the answer to your prayers.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
This is a lovely time for you because you are a social sign, and this is a social, fun-loving week! You will enjoy time spent with friends because you want to let them know exactly who you are and how you fit into their world. You will also enjoy interacting with groups and organizations, particularly, creative, artistic or entertaining groups. (For some, a friend will become a lover.) Not only do you feel warm and friendly with others, and eager to share time with them, you also want to discuss lofty ideas and philosophical concepts. Any kind of creative, intellectual work will appeal. If necessary, with Mercury hiding in your chart, you will set aside time for research. You can have it all!

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
“You look mahvelous, dahling.” This is the last week, before another year passes, when the Sun is at the top of your chart shining down on you, casting you in a flattering spotlight. This means without doing anything special on your part, you look fabulous to everyone. (It’s smoke and mirrors.) Not only that, Venus is also at the top of your chart promoting any kind of social activities. Venus makes you warm and friendly to everyone. It is a blessing to all kinds of relationships. In fact, it can promote romance with authority figures and bosses. Mercury makes you eager to talk to younger people; while Mars pumps your sex drive and makes you romantically passionate! This is definitely an exciting, pleasure-filled week!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
This is an exciting week for you because both the Sun and fair Venus are in the part of your chart that is your “home.” This is why you want to explore new vistas. It’s why you want to travel and get outta Dodge. It’s why you want to seek adventure and meet new and exciting people. You want it all! Therefore, accept all invitations to travel – definitely! Because you are also working hard right now as well, some of you might combine work-related travel and pleasure. Socialize with people from other countries and different cultures because this will be stimulating for you. Meanwhile, communications with others are important. You’ve got plans!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You are a passionate sign and this is a passionate week. Therefore, all your relations will have a greater intensity this week, especially love relationships. Romance will be very affectionate and meaningful. Everything will have significance. (“We were meant to be!”) New love that begins now will be powerful and have a great impact on your life. Meanwhile, if possible, you want to travel and explore new ideas. You want to learn new things and discuss profundity with others. You will also derive much enjoyment out of studying something new and acquiring new knowledge. “What we learn with pleasure we never forget.”

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
This is a social time for you because many of you are caught up in Leo birthdays. (Leo is the sign on your House of Marriage.) Furthermore, with fair Venus opposite your sign now, relations with others are warm, friendly and excellent. (Even relations with your enemies will be better.) Plus, Mars is in a playful part of your chart urging you to have fun! Competitive, physical sports will appeal. Romantic relationships will have less emphasis on candlelit dinners and more focus on sexy gymnastics. You’re energetic and enthused because you have big plans for the future. Naturally, you find it easy to speak your mind and share your original ideas with everyone.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
This is a curious week because despite the fact that you are focused on duties, errands and work (which you certainly are), nevertheless, you are putting fun and pleasure foremost as much as possible. Therefore, attend to all your responsibilities, which will involve work and dedication to achieving what you want to do. (Fortunately, coworkers are friendly and cooperative.) Nevertheless, you will not miss out on the good times and party energy that is all around you. Continue to get organized at home and straighten things out; but grab every opportunity for fun and pleasure! Enjoy good times with others. A word of caution: Always practice safe eating: use condiments.

Weekly Horoscopes beginning Sunday,
14 August 2022

If you’re born within a cusp period (16 to 26 of any month); you’re advised to read horoscopes of both signs covered by that period. You’re on the border; you may have influences from houses within those signs.

Outlines are longer versions; consist of every possible detail of everyday and are based on three parts of each sign: 1st, 2nd & 3rd Decan; that is, any of three divisions of 10° within a sign of the zodiac. Even if you know or don’t know your Decan; I recommend, please read all three Decan.

Personal theme: I am!!
Fire & cardinal sign: March 21 — April 19

Your horoscope for this week:

This week’s theme will thrill you. It’s ‘breakthroughs’, both in certain longstanding matters but, also, it’s about new and exciting ideas. However, some are so unfamiliar that you’re unsure how to make the best of them. The solution? Teamwork. Don’t just get others involved, but share the responsibility for taking things further. While this may slow your pace, others’ ideas will justify the patience required.

Progress in affairs that have dragged on for ages will come purely through your assertive and determined frame of mind. This sudden spurt of activity will be shared with others who are as keen to get some jobs out of the way as you are. Many hands will make light work. A support group is being set up when people who have been through a similar experience can help and support each other. You may be asked to take the helm.

Surely, it’s time to get a grip and remember what you’re good at. What does it bring out the best in you? Is it possible that you are pushing tasks around unwilling to get further involved? Or is that just too much detail now involved and you’re bored? Next weekend Mars begins an extended stay in Gemini – the sign associated with communication. If your brain isn’t being fed, then perhaps it’s time to consider moving or finding ways to make a task more interesting. A strong possibility is that soon you will be asked to join forces with someone setting out on a new venture. It would surely be worthwhile clearing up loose ends in your present work before considering your next step.

Personal theme: I have!!
Earth & fixed sign: April 20 — May 20

Your horoscope for this week:

Talk of changes in elements of your work or lifestyle are nothing new. Now, suddenly, events are forcing you to take action. Plunge in, even if you’re short of facts. What’s more, with the foundation on which plans are based shifting frequently, concentrate on exploration; and be bold. The resulting insights will alter your perspective, so much you’ll be considering options that, only recently, you’d never heard of.

Increasing social opportunities will come through your willingness to get out and about to see what’s going on in the world around you. Even if you are working to a strict schedule or confined to the one place throughout the next few days, you will feel a growing need to get away and do something completely different. A talented friend will share the secrets of their success. They have quite a brilliant story to tell.

In just over a week’s time, and slightly ahead of the New Moon on 27th, Uranus stations in your sign. If you haven’t already launched a new project and seen one of your entrepreneurial ideas make progress, you’ll likely want to do so by then. First you need to gather both information and a team to support you. Yes, it could all feel quite overwhelming mid-week. The challenge is surely to assess what support is out there. That doesn’t need to be financial – but probably will be. In preparing a document (business plan?), You might also discover that you have more thoughts about how a system should work than you’d realised. This discovery should be energising.

Personal theme: I think!!
Air sign: May 21 — June 20

Your horoscope for this week:

For ages you’ve intended to declutter elements of your life, but something’s always distracted you. However, with powerful Mars entering Gemini on the 20th, and for a long stay, you’re urged to declutter your life and even your thinking. This frees you to explore and, when you’re so inclined, take advantage of the exciting and, often, unexpected ideas, offers and encounters that will soon be coming your way.

There’s a strong sense of community in your neighbourhood when people get together to support each other. In the past, you did not feel as if the support received was sufficient in any way. As a result of a team getting together and raising awareness, you now have a clear path forward for improving your environment. Are you single and looking for love? It is time to pluck up the courage to ask someone you’ve had your eyes on for some time for a date.

Next weekend, Mars arrives in your sign for an extended stay. This week should be considered as an overture or preparation time. There are advances to be made. First, it’s necessary to streamline and focus on what’s truly important. Mid-week, you could get lost in detail or so enamoured with design and Internet projects, that you’re in danger of losing a grip of the practicalities needed to make something work. In an ideal world this would be a fabulous time to be on holiday and to just be creative. If trying to advance your career however, focus must be on how many moves that need to be before you get to where you want to be (or to secure your position, as for some Geminis, their position could be precarious). The career ladder may have extra rungs to it. Colleagues should be super supportive between Monday and Wednesday; alerting you to routes or courses you hadn’t known existed.

Personal theme: I feel!!
Water & cardinal sign: June 21 — July 22

Your horoscope for this week:

Yes, you’re making pivotal decisions. However, with the foundation on which plans are based shifting, your focus is on exploration, not finalising arrangements. While frustrating now, within days you’ll be relieved both arrangements and, in fact, your perspective on plans are flexible. The secret? Start with decluttering your life and, equally, your thinking. Overwhelming as this seems, once you begin, you’ll realise how timely this process is.

You’re trying hard to please everyone, but this isn’t possible. You need to start taking better care of yourself. The guilt you’re feeling is due to you not having been able to live up to the promises you have made. This will make you all the more determined to make it up to a friend. You don’t have to go out of your way to make amends. People who care for you will not hold it against you if you put your own needs first for a change.

Of course, it wouldn’t be unusual to need time off at this time of year and this week would arguably be perfect for re-fuelling and regenerating. There are ideas and plans for you to consider. Being away and preferably near water should stir your imagination mid-week. However, if that’s not an option, then perhaps you need to create timeout to consider options. As we know, since the extra ordinary line-up of planets in January 2020, much has been turned upside down. There is now no going back to old ways of working and new ways have to be found. Challenging as this is – especially for Cancers, – don’t underestimate your ability to lead. It’s that that should get you noticed between Wednesday and Friday and leave you with the realisation that you really are a key member of the team. A strong possibility is being asked to work on a project would begin soon and conclude in February 2023. Though obviously much depends on your personal chart, this should move you up the career ladder.

Personal theme: I will!!
Fire & fixed sign: July 23 — August 22

Your horoscope for this week:

Between late July’s Leo New Moon, the accompanying fresh perspective and more recent exciting ideas, you’re wresting with changes, many unexpectedly far-reaching. While you’d like to plunge in and let experience be your guide, with the foundation on which many arrangements are based shifting, the more flexible your thinking and your plans, the better. Yes, you’ll finalise arrangements, but probably not until later in the month.

You know where you are heading, but obstacles are causing you and others who share similar goals a lot of frustration. If one path isn’t taking you very far, be ready to try another. Accept that you can’t go in a straight line to get what you need, but you will be able to achieve your aims by taking a different course. A relative wants to know about something you have been asked to keep a secret. You can’t break the trust someone close has placed in you.

Challenging as it may be to balance the books -especially mid-week when it seems there will be far more going out than coming in, – you might not resist a splurge that you see as an investment in your career, but others consider unwise. Explaining yourself and showing both resilience and determination are major themes in the run-up to the Last Quarter Moon on Friday 19th. This part of the lunar cycle accents your career journey. It might be valuable to think back to the end of 2021 and decisions taken back then. These are perhaps up for revision – particularly now that you know that colleagues intend to move in altered direction. With Venus now moving through your sign however, a charm offensive should ensure that your talents and expertise are recognised -even if these aren’t rewarded just yet.

Personal theme: I analyse!!
Earth sign: August 23 — September 22

Your horoscope for this week:

Recently you’ve invested time, thought and, sometimes, heart in deciding which elements of your life need to change or, in some cases, come to an end. It’s been challenging but also, a relief. Better yet, you’re free to explore the new ideas currently coming your way. Take it slowly. Some are clear but others are likely to remain uncertain until the Virgo New Moon on the 27th.

A partner or close friend will find it hard to understand your sudden reluctance to stay with the job at hand. After your enthusiastic efforts over the past few weeks, they may wonder what has occurred to cause this change. You have your reasons, but you aren’t ready yet to share these with anyone. Technical problems will mean it takes longer than planned to complete a project that involves a lot of online research.

Your ruling planet, Mercury, continues to move through your sign until almost the next New Moon on August 27. Think of it this way: you are sending messages. It is possible that in ‘playing postman’, and doing so in haste, that you leave messages for the wrong people or in the wrong place. Certainly, there is high probability of misunderstanding and misplaced information mid-week. Putting that right should be done before the Last Quarter Moon next Friday 19th, but will likely require that you focus – especially important if dealing with an Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. It’s these individuals who might consider that you’ve lost the plot – albeit temporarily. They may have second thoughts about partnership and need to be reassured that not only do you have the administrative skills, but that you will focus as and when necessary.

Personal theme: I balance!!
Air & cardinal sign: September 23 — October 22

Your horoscope for this week:

This is a rare period of calm, combined with growth and opportunities as welcome as, in many cases, they’re unexpected. Ordinarily, you’d concentrate on gathering facts, and only then make lasting decisions; but these need a more flexible approach. Explore everything and say no to nothing, at least for now. While that seems overwhelming, once decision-time comes, probably in late September, your plans and priorities will be clearer.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult sticking to your own plans when the demands of a loved one aren’t leaving you with much space or time to call your own. It may be necessary for you to put your foot down and encourage them to be more independent. You will feel obliged to a friend or colleague who reminds you of a promise you made that you had forgotten about. You could do with some help, and someone close can make suggestions without you feeling they are interfering.

It’s just possible that you’ve become directionless and need time-out to review your situation. That point should be made clear by a close relative or colleague early in the week. Tempted as you may be to enjoy holiday or relaxation time, they are likely right to suggest that it’s imperative that you improve qualifications or put greater emphasis on networking. All this can be done and achieved before next Friday’s Last Quarter Moon. There is a sense of last chance about this as from next weekend, Mars begins an extended stay in another of the Air signs – bringing multiple options your way. It might be wise to discuss options with a Capricorn who is at least familiar with the outline of your revised career plan.

Scorpio & Ophiuchus
Personal theme: I desire!!
Water & fixed signs: October 23 — November 21

Your horoscope for this week:

The idea of offers coming from out of the blue may be appealing, but now that you’re experiencing them, you’re probably less enthusiastic. When making changes, you prefer to know what’s involved and, ideally, the details. Despite the lack of any such information, you’re urged to plunge in. True, this means taking chances. Still, once you begin, you’ll wonder why you hesitated for even a moment.

It shouldn’t bother you too much if there is a dull atmosphere in a group event or project. It may take a while for others to show enthusiasm about new possibilities, but eventually, they will see the potential of your ideas. Where you should keep your thoughts to yourself is in a work situation where you disagree with a senior colleague. They will not take too kindly to your opposing views and objections. There will be a better opportunity to voice your thoughts later in the month.

Think back over the last couple of years. Exactly how far you progressed with your career? By next Friday’s Last Quarter Moon, you should be reviewing and assessing what needs to be done to reach the next rung of your career ladder. It would help if you could have time off for blue skies thinking – preferably mid-week. It’s then that you could tune into interesting undercurrents. Don’t underestimate your ability to market or advertise. This though also requires having a plan and implementing it. Agreeing schedules – most likely over Thursday and Friday, would be wise. Whatever, key is to focus on what could be achieved by June 2023 and which individuals will give best support. In this respect, both Cancers and Capricorns seem to have key roles to play.

Personal theme: I see!!
Fire sign: November 22 — December 21

Your horoscope for this week:

Currently, life is as thrilling as most events you’re facing are unexpected. For you, as a spontaneous Sagittarius, this is fine. However, others aren’t just unsettled, certain changes are a source of concern. The trick? Get others involved in exploring along with you. This may take some persuasion. Still, within a short while even those whose doubts were biggest will begin to be excited.

Arrangements being made in secret will be brought out in the open sooner than planned. Now everyone knows about them; you may have to bring some matters forward, which will change the whole scenario. Where you had hoped to have had more time to prepare, there is now a need to push forward in the hope all will be well. Someone nearby could do with some company. They may not understand or appreciate how busy you happen to be.

It seems likely you’ve reached a turning point. By next Friday’s Last Quarter Moon, reviewing your daily routine would be wise. Further adjustments might need to be made. You may recall that for the last few years, Neptune has been moving over the base of your solar chart leaving you disorientated – either through a health matter or displaced because domestically things haven’t run quite as you would wish. Now may be time to plan and to immerse yourself in future-thinking. There is much to be gained by joining forces most likely with a Libra. Indeed, with their assistance, and just a little of your natural enthusiasm, by next Friday you could have a firm plan in place. Yes, this probably will require gaining further expertise and knowledge – but not necessarily in a formal environment.

Personal theme: I use!!
Earth & cardinal sign: December 22 — January 19

Your horoscope for this week:

Recently you’ve faced a range of pivotal decisions. While you’ve dealt with most, several are more complex and you’re unsure, if not puzzled, what to do. The secret? Recognise these aren’t mere decisions but are about exploration. Begin asking questions. You’ll soon be learning a lot, and recognise some are leading to a new chapter of your life. Once that’s clear, the rest will be surprisingly easy.

In addition to your abundance of energy, there is a huge amount of schemes and dreams churning around in your mind. You aren’t happy just thinking about what you are going to do. You know exactly how to channel your assertiveness and drive to make some positive achievements. A friend will be interested in joining you in one of your ventures, but this is something you will prefer to do on your own. Besides, you know from experience how quickly they can change their mind.

As you well know, there is strength in partnership. Yet circumstances don’t always allow time and space to develop plans or business ideas. Making room for important discussion, should prove fractionally easier this week. Of course, it would help if you were on holiday and given space for blue skies thinking. There is also the issue of what can be done domestically to improve a working area. You are at your very best when there are clear goals and timelines. These could be agreed before Friday’s Last Quarter Moon in another of the Earth signs. It’s around this time that you might agree on a study plan that would take you through until next summer but leave you better qualified to take the next step up your career ladder.

Personal theme: I know!!
Air & fixed sign: January 20 — February 18

Your horoscope for this week:

Between the Aquarius Full Moon on the 12th, and current powerful planetary activity involving your ruler Uranus, you’re in a period of breakthroughs. The problem? You won’t always recognise their potential, at least at the time. That, in turn, means you could battle what’s in your best interests; and the solution? Despite your misgivings, explore everything. The more you discuss, the more you’ll learn.

A sensitive time for close relationships when touchy topics are discussed. Any tension will only last for around twenty-four hours, but it could be that a foul-up in communications will mean having to postpone plans you’d been looking forward to. Are you single? You could suddenly become involved with a captivating person, and you can anticipate an enjoyable relationship ahead. Romantic hopes no longer seem so out of reach. Working with a creative partner will feel refreshing.

As Venus moves through your opposite sign, it might seem that others are moving forward with their plans and that you are left behind. Arguably nothing could be further from the truth. True, you might need to be energised – most likely by an Aries or Cancer at the start of the week. However, once you set a goal, achieving it should be nothing like as hard as you might think. Focus is, as always, essential and exasperation would be understandable mid-week if you feel that others are failing to keep to a schedule. Yet you could go on a charm offensive and pull them back on track. There’s also the strong possibility of joining forces with someone whose expertise has been developed through putting on events – not necessarily professionally. Their views as to how you could market yourself better would surely be helpful. Indeed, one of the great advantages this week would be to review your CV and ensure that all social media contacts are up-to-date.

Personal theme: I believe!!
Water sign: February 19 — March 20

Your horoscope for this week:

You’re letting go of the past and, in the process, are clearing the way for the exciting events triggered by the Pisces Full Moon in a few weeks’ time. Still, you’re uneasy. Forget analysis. Instead, recall past events when similar breakthroughs occurred. You felt unsettled then, and it’s the same now. Remember how well things worked out then. It’ll be the same now, and in the future.

A partner is having to make a decision that will affect more than just themselves. They will be grateful to be able to discuss this with you in detail, and they will value your opinions. The general pattern of events should bring a big improvement to trends you have recently been experiencing when you will feel more able to focus on personal concerns, hobbies and interests that bring you happiness. You’ve been growing bored recently with taking predictable routes.

It would be understandable if you felt that other people were unfocused and essentially messing you around. Clarity may be in short supply – especially mid-week. This would be the optimum time to be on holiday! Making the most of this week’s planetary energies and ensuring that you don’t slip off a career ladder, likely requires that you take keen interest in how someone approaches their career ladder. It may be that you would benefit by joining forces. Indeed, it wouldn’t be surprising if you were asked to assist with a marketing or distribution issue in the second half of the week; and yes, it’s possible this action will lead to you developing a second revenue stream after Mars arrives at the base of your solar chart next weekend. Another interesting exercise would be to create space at home so that you can develop that stream.
