Biddy Tarot Card of the Week

The Three of Wands signals the many chances available to you to broaden your horizons through study, travel, business enterprise and learning. You are becoming more aware of the opportunities that exist for you right now, and there are still more to come.

To take advantage of this potential, you must stay committed to your path and be prepared to stretch beyond your comfort zone, knowing your best hopes lie outside of your current environment.

It is time to think BIG, and dream BIG. Consider what you can to open doors to more development and self-exploration.

Ask the Tarot: What new opportunities lie ahead of me?

Goddess Cailleach

The Goddess known as Cailleach in Scotland and parts of Ireland is the embodiment of the dark mother, the harvest Goddess, the hag or crone entity. She appears in the late fall, as the earth is dying, and is known as a bringer of storms. In Ireland she is also associated with craggy, prominent mountains and outcroppings, such as Hag’s Head (Irish: Ceann Caillí, meaning “hag’s head”) the southernmost tip of the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. The megalithic tombs at Loughcrew in County Meath are situated atop Slieve na Calliagh (Irish: Sliabh na Caillí, meaning “the hag’s mountain”) and include a kerbstone known as “the hag’s chair”. Cairn T on Slieve na Calliagh is a classic passage tomb, in which the rays of the equinox sunrise shine down the passageway.

Your Cosmic Weekly Weather
Sage Goddess <>

January 12 – Saturn conjunct Pluto: Saturn-Pluto conjunctions only happen once every 33-38 years and now’s the time! These two powerhouses meet in the sign of Capricorn and they’re not playing around. During this time, strength and integrity are tested. Anything weak, false, or fake will fail. If you do what you need to do with maturity, this transit offers the potential for profound growth, progress, and even self-mastery. It’s a case of the best get better and… you know the rest.

January 13 – Venus Enters Pisces: In astrology, Venus shows the way to peace and restored equilibrium. In the sign of Pisces, we can all benefit from being a little easier on ourselves and each other. And from the soothing sounds of music and nature. For the next few weeks, don’t underestimate gentleness and sensitivity – it can heal a thousand wounds.

January 16 – Mercury Enters Aquarius: Mercury in Aquarius is a mind that breaks the cage of its conditioning. It needs to come up with its own ideas and discover its own beliefs. For some, this is second nature. For others, it’s all too easy to follow the worn path in front of us. Next time you have a quick answer to something, challenge yourself to question it. Chances are the more you think you know, the less you actually do.

Stone of the Week:

Labradorite is a gem favorite for any occasion or season, but it really shines when it comes to new beginnings and helping you go after your heart’s desires. This stone has brilliant fiery flashes of color that sparkle from its darkness. Like The Hermit in the Tarot, labradorite helps light your path to see your way through challenges. Associated with the New Moon, it embodies potential and is a great tool to work with when setting new moon intentions. Labradorite activates the Third Eye Chakra, opening your senses, enhancing vision, and making it possible to see the world, fully, as it is around you.

Llewellyn’s Spell A Day
Cold Spell for a Clear Choice
January 12, 2020 by Michael Furie

Though by this time in the season we may be tired of the winter weather, its energy can be harnessed for a variety of reasons, such as this spell to make a decision between two or more choices.

Make representations of the potential choices that are freezable and small enough to fit in an ice tray, such as different- colored buttons, coins, or beads. Make a note of which item stands for which choice. Place each choice in its own cup of the ice tray, add water, and freeze. Once they are frozen solid, pop them out of the tray and set them on a sturdy plate. Hold your hands over the plate, saying:

A clear choice is what I need,
From indecision I shall be freed.
Melt the ice, dissolve the cold,
The first to be gone the
correct answer will hold.

Leave the plate in a warm, safe place and monitor its progress. Whichever ice cube melts first will hold the answer you seek.
Leopold’s Legacy
January 11, 2020 by Susan Pesznecker

It’s the birthday of Aldo Leopold, American ecologist and author born in 1887. Honor his legacy and strengthen your own magics with a charm for Earth and home protection.

You’ll need a piece of natural material (round or square) about six inches across. Neutral-colored cotton or linen cloth, leather, or a piece of birch bark would work well. Use a pen or marker to inscribe a pentagram in the center of the material. Place a combination of the following protective herbs on the pentagram: rosemary, juniper, mugwort, wormwood, or yarrow. Use freshly picked herbs if possible. Add a pinch of sea salt and at least one of these protective stones (use a small one!): agate, obsidian, fluorite, or another stone of your preference.

Gather up the sides of the material, forming a small bundle, and tie with a green ribbon or thread of natural material. Walk the bounds of your property deosil (sunwise) while holding the charm, then bury it at the northern edge.
Anuket Invocation
January 09, 2020 by Tess Whitehurst

Anuket is the Egyptian Goddess associated with the yearly flooding of the Nile. Her many gifts include abundance, fertility, harmony, and joy.

Today, wash a handful of coins in water and white vinegar. Dry them in sunlight or with a towel, then place them in a ceramic or glass bowl. Fill the bowl with water, place a floating candle on top, and light the candle.

Anuket, nurturing goddess of the
Nile and the overflowing waters, I
respectfully invoke your presence.
Please flood my life with an endless
flow of prosperity, laughter, and love.
Open me up to receive, and help me
remember that the more I have, the
more I have to share. Thank you.

Allow the candle to safely burn for at least an hour. Dispose of the remaining wax, release the water to a moving body of water (preferably a river), and donate the coins to a charity of your choice.
The Scales of Justice
January 08, 2020 by Charlynn Walls

Today honors the Roman goddess of justice, Justitia. She is the personification of justice and is often depicted wearing a blindfold and holding a set of scales. She possesses these items to show her impartiality and fairness.

It would be appropriate to call on Justitia today to aid in matters of the law. Find an area where you will not be disturbed. Take a small piece of paper and write down the issue that requires intervention. Place the paper underneath a Justice card from any tarot deck. Say:

Lady Justitia, I seek your arbitration.
Bring swift and fair resolution.

Leave the paper under the card in a safe place where it will be undisturbed until the matter is resolved.
The Wishing Rock
January 07, 2020 by Cerridwen Iris Shea

Today is Old Rock Day, which celebrates petrology, the scientific study of old rocks and fossils. It’s a great day to make a wishing rock, using the earth element for manifestation.

Gather these supplies:
* A rock or stone you’ve found
* Water-based paint in a color that contrasts with the rock or a white sticker and a black marker
* A sigil you’ve created that represents your wish

Bless and consecrate all the materials by holding them in your hands and blowing gently on them. Imagine your breath as a sacred cleansing wind that purifies them. Paint your sigil on the rock or draw it on the sticker and fasten it to the rock. Hold the rock in your hand for a few minutes, visualizing your wish as manifested. Repeat once a day from now through the full moon on March 9. Each day, take one small action toward the manifestation of your wish.

Then wash the sigil off the rock or remove the sticker. You can cleanse the rock and reuse it for another manifestation spell.
Wipe Away Negativity
January 06, 2020 by James Kambos

Today is Epiphany. Many Christians believe this was the day the Three Wise Men met the baby Jesus. Today, some Christians, especially in Central Europe, chalk the initials of the Wise Men on their front door to protect their home from evil spirits. This form of protection magic is the basis of this spell, which you can use to protect yourself or your home or banish a bad habit. You’ll need a small chalkboard, white chalk, an eraser, bottled spring water, and a clean rag.

First, bless the chalkboard by wiping it with the spring water and the rag. You may also say a blessing. Then write whatever it is you want to banish or protect yourself from on the board. Think about your problem for a while. Next, vigorously erase the board as you visualize the problem being wiped away. Clean the board again with the water. The spell is done.

Heartwings Love Notes 913 Respect is a Keystone in a Relationship

Heartwings says, “when we treat one another with respect everyone is happier.”

Sixty years ago, when my two oldest daughters were my only children, we all lived in an apartment above that of another family who also had two small daughters. Their mother and I often went on little trips together, which is what we were doing this day. As we set out, my neighbor said, “We must be sure to get back by four o’clock so my girls can watch their program.” Today this sounds quite normal. Sixty years ago, it sounded odd. While I didn’t say it aloud, it was a new thought to me to give importance to the wishes of a child to watch “their” TV program.

When I was being raised, in most families of my generation as well as the ones before that, adults came first. Children’s wishes were paid attention to only if it was convenient or the adults didn’t have any priorities. Dr. Benjamin Spock and his book Baby and Child Care, published in 1946 helped to change that. However, he was only just becoming a well-known authority. In those days, respect for children’s wishes was scarce or even nonexistent. Children were supposed to respect adults; not the other way around. However we had made some progress: children were not considered the possession of the father as in previous centuries.

Respect for one’s other half in marriage is an important component in a good marital relationship. We all have our differences. Some of them are more important to us than others. When there is a difference of opinion it is vital that each side respects the point of view and/or the needs of the other. These things can be discussed amicably, especially when there is respect on both sides for what is important to the other person. Also, it may be necessary to ask one’s partner or friend what his or her needs or feelings are. Shyness or inexperience in relationships may silence the other person.

These days, our society encourages us to put ourselves first. While there are times we may need to do this, when one’s decision or actions involve other people, and most especially in a marriage, it seems wise to seek the other’s point of view. Some things can be changed, others cannot. Some deeply ingrained habits are nonnegotiable, some are not. Bringing the issues out in the open helps even if nothing changes, it shows respect for the other’s side to discuss it. The keystone in an arch is what keeps the rest of the stones in place. Respect is a keystone in dealing with others.

May your respect grow as you look with compassion upon others.

Blessings and best Regards, Tasha Halpert <>

By Madisyn Taylor

It is said moonstones have been imbued with mystical properties that extend the fabled powers of the moon into daytime.

Moonstones, gems named for their resemblance to the familiar glowing orb in the night sky, offer us more than mere beauty. Their association with moon goddesses throughout the world may explain why moonstones’ qualities seem to reach out to assist all those who find themselves under the moon’s light, from travelers and those at sea to lovers and dreamers. Throughout the world, moonstones have been imbued with mystical properties that extend the fabled powers of the moon into daylight hours.

In India, they are thought to give sweet, beautiful dreams by night but have gained a reputation for enhancing intuitive sensitivity and spiritual vision of the “third eye” at any time of the day. This connection to the subconscious was also recognized in the Middle Ages in Europe, where it was believed that gazing into a moonstone would cause you to fall into a deep sleep that allowed you to see the future. This extends to the power of fertility, where in Arabia, women sew moonstones into their garments to enhance their fertility. This association with fertility even extends to the fertility of crops, which is why moonstone amulets have been seen hanging in fruit trees before harvest. To further enhance the power of your moonstone, try putting them outside in the light of the full moon.

Moonstones, sometimes likened to a raindrop or tear, have long reminded people in Asia that the moon cannot be seen during the rain, just as it is difficult to see through our tears. By bringing love and abundance into our lives today and helping us to see the future, moonstones allow us to bring the hope of all good things into our lives.

The Color Violet
Crystal Vaults

Right now we’re in the middle of the time for violet crystals. At the onset of the darkness of winter, the oranges and reds of autumn give way to the deeper winter tones of violet and blue. The skies are darker with less sunshine; the earth takes on the darker hue of winter’s majesty.

Violet is the color of natural birthstones of those born at the time when the year is new, just after the winter solstice (December 21-January 19).

Like the sleepy, misty time of year that produces its rays, violet is the color ray of intuition, dreams, nobility, and luxury. As the color ray of influence that begins the cycle of life once again, violet is one of the most powerful rays in nature.

It inspires awe and invites a feeling of mystery and magic, reminiscent of the mystery and magic of life’s rejuvenation and renewal.

Violet color rays are powerful aids in interpreting our dreams, inspiring us to great deeds and accomplishments, and putting the magic back in our lives and relationships.

Violet is the color of music; it stirs us, transforms us, and connects us in seemingly mysterious ways to our dreams, our past, and ourselves.

How to Meet Other Pagans
by Patti Wigington
Updated July 06, 2019

Once you’ve begun studying Paganism, whether it’s Wicca or some other form, you may at some point feel like you’re all alone. Your family doesn’t get what you’re doing, your friends think you’re weird, and you might not even want to mention your beliefs to your co-workers. So what do you do? Well, the obvious solution is to find other Pagans—not necessarily because you want to be part of a coven or a group, but just so you can find some like-minded individuals to hang out with and share ideas once in a while.

Did You Know?

A great place to meet other Pagans is at public events like Pagan Pride Day or metaphysical expo. Use online resources to identify groups or local meetups that might be worth exploring for you. Meeting other Pagans doesn’t have to be all ritual and festivals—it can also provide you with new relationships, ideas, and ways to learn.

Why Meet Other Pagans?

There are a lot of advantages to finding other Pagans in your community. Sure, you may be perfectly happy to practice as a solitary—and doing so successfully. But finding other Pagans to network with doesn’t mean you’re locked into a ritual or coven situation with them. It simply means that you’re out there finding fellowship with like-minded people.

Even if you decide that festivals, workshops, and classes aren’t really your thing, that’s okay. There are still benefits to meeting up with other people who share a similar spiritual philosophy. You’ll have the luxury of sharing ideas, asking for new information, and having people to discuss issues that you may be questioning. Plus, if you’re really fortunate, you might even make a few new friends along the way!

How to Find Them

Because Paganism is not a single religion but a collection of thousands of different spiritual paths, there’s no clearinghouse list of all of the people who self-identify under this heading. However, there are a number of ways to find and meet other Pagans in your area—it just takes a little bit of effort.

Naturally, the Internet is always an option. Use sites like, Meetup, and social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook to find people in your area. Remember, though, people aren’t always as they seem online—be cautious if you’re meeting someone you’ve met on the Internet.

Another great place to meet other Pagans is at public events like Pagan Pride Day or metaphysical expo. Check with the national Pagan Pride website to see if there’s a PPD in your area. Attending a public festival is a great way to network. Getting involved in the planning of an event like this is an even better way to meet new people. If you’re a Pagan college student, check to see if there’s a Pagan student group on campus—many universities have them.

You can also bring yourself into contact with other Pagans by attending classes or events at your local metaphysical store. Many shops become social hangouts for people who don’t have a regular coven, because the environment is conducive to interacting with like-minded people. If you’re in a small town or rural area, you may have to drive to the nearest city to find a metaphysical or Wiccan store—but if you’re serious about meeting other people, it’s worth the trip.

Finally, keep your eyes and ears open. If someone compliments you on your lovely pentacle necklace, they’re not just saying they like your jewelry. They’re saying, “I know what a pentacle is, and I want you to know that I know what a pentacle is!” Pagan jewelry is almost like a secret language—it’s a way of communicating what you are and believe, and signaling others that it’s okay for them to talk to you about it.

If someone casually mentions that one time they were getting their Tarot cards read, they’re giving you an opening for a new conversation—it’s perfectly okay to say, “You may not know this, but I read Tarot cards. What was your experience with that reader like?” This opens the door and paves the way for new interactions.

Ultimately, it’s up to you how involved you get with others of the Pagan community. You may be perfectly happy to avoid them completely, and that’s fine. Just know that if you ever decide you want to meet other Pagans, they’re out there. You just have to make the effort to find them.

Pairing Crystals and Essential Oils
Heather Askinosie|January 08, 2020

We’ve been dabbling with mixing crystals and essential oils for years, but in 2019, with the help of our crystallized bath and body products, we’ve taken this combination of energy tools to the next level. You’ve heard of crystal-infused oils, but what about oil-infused crystals? If you’re looking for a new way to enhance your crystals in the new year, give our new favorite combo a try!

Combining Crystals and Essential Oils

When you combine crystals with essential oils, you can enhance and strengthen the power of each of them. Through touch and smell, this dynamic energy duo can reprogram your mind, body, and spirit by targeting not one but two of your senses.

The plant world and the crystal world grow together, so it’s only natural that they would work well together. Whatever your intention, pairing a crystal with an essential oil (or a few!) can amplify the energy of your energy and help you achieve your goal more efficiently.

There are, of course, traditional ways to combine essential oils and gemstones, like working with crystals while diffusing or wearing essential oils. But our new favorite method of working with these energy tools is actually applying the oil to the stones themselves.

In the same that essential oils alter your energy, they enhance the energy of the crystals when applied directly to the stone. To help you get started with these combinations of crystals and oils, here are 10 ways to combine essential oils and gemstones:

For Calming:

These combinations feature our Calming Crystal Oil, which is made with lavender and vanilla oils. Simply rub the Calming oil onto the stone to fulfill your intention!

Vanilla Water: Magic To Taste The Sweetness Of Life
January 6, 2020 by Astrea

This simple spell for Vanilla Water was created for healing and happiness. It opens up the senses and gives you permission to taste the sweetness. However, like any magic, you must claim it.

I reached for vanilla extract today. I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for, but my intuitive witchcraft senses took over.

I don’t know about you, but vanilla extract has always felt sweet to me. I feel vanilla corresponds with the energies of bliss, love, innocence, serenity, and emotional healing.

I also feel that vanilla heals the heart, throat, and mind. In my experience, it heals the aura too, making it more lovely and easygoing.

It’s with great joy that I share this simple spell with you.

Vanilla Water Spell for a Sweet Life

Ingredients: a clear glass, water, vanilla extract

1. Pour a glass of water for yourself in the glass. This represents your energy at the moment.

2. Drop a tiny bit of vanilla extract to it. A couple of drops will do.

3. Crouch low until you’re eye-level with the glass. Watch the dark vanilla extract spread through the water. Feel a change in your energy as the vanilla swirls around. Your energy might feel lighter or slightly more peaceful.

4. When you can’t see the vanilla extract in the water any more, stand up straight again. Put the tip of your pinky finger in the glass and take a deep breath, drawing strength and courage inside of yourself.

5. Speak the words out loud, using your will in your voice.

I (stir once, clockwise)

WILL (stir once, clockwise)

A SWEET (stir once, clockwise)

LIFE. (stir once, clockwise)

6. Take a drink while you repeat the words to yourself in your mind. Imbibe the magic of the vanilla. Taste the sweetness! Claim your sweet life!

7. Repeat, taking a sip and repeating the words to yourself, until the beverage is gone.

May it be so! Make this beverage as often as needed. Sometimes, a double dose is needed to ensure the vanilla transfers its energy completely.

This recipe also works well in coffee and most tea.

Always remember that small acts of magic can be extremely powerful. Especially when you want to reconnect with your joyful heart, they can work wonders.

The Treasure, Part 2
Stephen Halpert

“That’s what I call a delicious lunch.,” Todd sat back, patted his stomach and took a snippet of goat cheese for good measure. Becky winced. She feared if he ate like that every day, he’d be rounder than taller. On the other hand, he seemed more relaxed than Becky had seen him in years Todd turned to David and said softly. “Now run upstairs and get your magic wand. Bring it back down and give it to your Uncle Jack. I’m putting him in charge of it during our stay here. Eyes downcast, with dragging steps, David went upstairs, and brought his precious wand back down to the dining room. He started to hand it to Uncle Jack.
“May I have a look?” Julia said.
David looked hesitantly to Todd, who nodded his approval. David smiled and handed Julia the wand.
“Thank you, David.” She took it and waved it around.”
“Don’t!” Todd screeched. “You have no idea.”
Julia nodded and studied it more carefully. “So, this is the infamous magic wand I’ve heard so much about.”
“I wouldn’t go waving it,” Todd reiterated. “Believe me it has a mind of its own.”
Julia’s eyebrows shot up. “Seems innocent enough like something you’d buy at a carnival or circus.” She looked at Jack. “I hope it helps you and David find the treasure.”
Todd looked shocked. “Oh please,” he started to say. Then he thought better. Why stir up trouble. He groaned inwardly, remembering what had happened at the museum that day.
Jack half smiled and looked pensive. Momentarily he was transported back to the day in Africa when he had received the wand from a medicine man as a gift. Then he said. “Yes, sure, why not, might work.”
“But for right now,” Julia said “I’d like to ask it to fix my Great Aunt Tabitha’s Simon Willard Grandfather clock.” She smiled and waved the wand like a child playing in a garden.
“Oh this is such fun,” she laughed.” Then she paused and said. “But ever since I inherited it something’s always been off about the chime. I had several clock makers in to see it. They agreed something was off, but they couldn’t come up with any solutions.”
“Let’s see if we can fix it,” Jack said. He winked at David and with concise seriousness said. “Please restore Julia’s clock.” As though he were conducting a symphony orchestra, he waved the wand fervently.
At first nothing happened. Then the clock began to whir and chime. Its face flew open and slammed shut continually. Its ticks grew louder and louder, while its hands spun around, jerking wildly making no apparent sense.
A large black bird appeared in the room and began flapping in circles.
David jumped up! “Daddy, Daddy, that looks like the same crow who came to our house last Christmas when Lisa waved my wand when no one was home.”
“No, it isn’t,’ “she insisted.
“Crow girl, crow girl,” David shrieked.
Julia’s face reddened. “Why is that crow suddenly flying in this house.” She looked directly at Jack.”Please Jack, put a stop to it.”
Jack suppressed a grin and said, “You mean make it go away?”
Julia’s voice rose. “I don’t care, just make it disappear. It’s making me nervous.”
David started giggling,” He looked at his sister and pointed. “Crow girl. You’re Crow girl.”
Lisa clenched her fist. “Mom, will you tell David to stop calling me that. It isn’t funny.”
“Stop embarrassing your sister,” Becky said with as much authority as she could muster.
David laughed even harder.
With great emphasis Julia said to Jack. “Get that crow out of this house ”
“Oh dear,” Becky said. The crow flapped out of the room and headed up the stairs.
Lisa glared at her brother. “This is all your fault.”
Uncle Jack looked totally flustered. He peered up the stairwell in disbelief. “Where did it go?” ”
“Upstairs,” Todd said. Let me give you a hand. I’m a seasoned veteran of these things.”
“I see what you mean about this wand,” Jack handed it to Todd.
At that moment the priceless Simon Willard Grandfather Clock began lifting up into the air and landing on one of its brass feet. The chimes all rattled at once and the hands spun around so fast they couldn’t be seen. Then its feet landed on the floor with a clunk and stayed there. The ticking was back to its normal rhythm, and the hands moved in perfect harmony. It sounded the half hour, demonstrating that the chime had been restored.
“Probably needed to blow off a little steam,” Jack said. He smiled at Julia.
“Get that crow out of this house,” Julia said.
“It might just disappear on its own,” Becky said. “That’s what happened at our house.’
“Look daddy,” David said. “There’s a dark shape moving around. It’s part of a shadow next to the clock.”
Julia looked closely. “Good gracious,” she exclaimed. “That’s Aunt Tabatha. I can tell by her hairdo. Poor thing, staggering around that way. She seems lost.”
Thinking quickly, Becky envisioned light as she had been told to do in her yoga studio lecture by a medium, and sent it to the shadow. It faded gradually into light and was gone.
Jack shook his head. ” My goodness, I wonder if all this time her spirit’s been stuck inside that clock.”
“She must have been very attached to it during her lifetime for her spirit to be caught in it that way,” Becky said.
Maybe that’s why the chime was never right,” Julia said.

What Are the Health Benefits of Yerba Mate?
By Monica Reinagel, MS, LD/N, CNS Nutrition Diva
January 7, 2020

The impressive health benefits of drinking yerba mate include increased energy and enhanced weight loss. Should you trade your coffee or tea for this traditional South American beverage?

The Quick And Dirty

Health benefits attributed to mate include increased energy, reduced fatigue, enhanced weight loss and athletic performance.

Most of the benefits attributed to mate are available from any caffeinated beverage.
Some studies have linked high consumption of mate with increased rates of oral and esophageal cancers, but this may have more to due with the temperature the beverages than with anything in the beverage.

Mate is a traditional South American beverage drink that is brewed from the leaves and stems of the yerba mate plant, a tree that belongs to the holly family. It’s widely consumed in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil, where the mate tree is indigenous. You’ll also find mate as an ingredient in energy drinks or in the herbal tea section of your local health food store.

Fun fact: Technically, the word tea only applies to the leaves of the Camilla Sinensis or tea plant. The beverages popularly known as herbal teas are actually tisanes.

Human beings apparently have a universal appetite for stimulants. Depending on where on the globe your ancestors found themselves, they might have enjoyed beverages made from coffee or cacao beans, guarana berries, kola nuts, or tea or yerba mate leaves. Although each contains a slightly different array of active chemicals, all contain caffeine or a closely related molecule with similar stimulant properties.
Health benefits of yerba mate

There are many impressive health benefits attributed to drinking yerba mate (or mate, for short), including

Greater energy
Mental focus
Reduced fatigue
Weight loss
Antioxidant activity
Enhanced sports performance

It might help you go a little longer or move a little faster, but mate will not turn a weekend jogger into an Olympic runner.

But before you get too excited about this new miracle brew, most of the benefits attributed to mate are available from any caffeinated beverage. There’s no question that caffeine stimulates the nervous system, resulting in great alertness and reduced fatigue. The impact of mate on weight and fat loss is likely to be relatively minor—especially compared to the impact of your food and movement choices. Similarly, expect only incremental effects on your athletic performance. It might help you go a little longer or move a little faster, but mate will not turn a weekend jogger into an Olympic runner.

How caffeine affects the body

Caffeine is not addictive in the true sense of the word, but it is habit-forming. If you drink caffeine regularly, your body will become habituated to its effects. You may feel like you can’t wake up in the morning until you’ve had your first cup. If deprived of your regular caffeine fix, you may develop a temporary headache. If you’re trying to quit caffeine, I recommend weaning yourself gradually to minimize any unpleasant side effects.

Long-term caffeine use appears to have neuroprotective effects, reducing the risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

On the plus side, regular consumers also habituate to caffeine’s diuretic effects. Contrary to popular lore, drinking caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea is not dehydrating if you drink them regularly. Long-term caffeine use also appears to have neuroprotective effects, reducing the risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Just like different fruits and vegetables have different nutrient profiles, coffee, tea, mate, and the other stimulant beverages each contain unique phytochemicals that may offer distinct benefits. But the similarities are greater than the differences. You can stick to your favorite caffeine delivery vehicle or play the field.

Or, you may choose to abstain altogether. Many of the antioxidant and other disease-fighting compounds found in coffee, tea, and mate can also be gotten from non-stimulating fruits and vegetables—in particular, apples, berries, grapes, asparagus, garlic, onions, and spinach.

Are there risks to drinking yerba mate?

Mate leaves are traditionally cured over a wood fire, giving it a slightly smoky flavor. This is similar to the process used to create Lapsang Souchong tea. Unfortunately, the smoke also imparts polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carcinogenic compounds that are present in other smoked foods and grilled meats. Very high consumption of mate (or, for that matter, smoked foods or grilled meats) might increase the risk of cancer due to increased exposure to PAHs.

Some studies have linked high consumption of mate (or tea) with increased rates of oral and esophageal cancers, but this may have more to do with the temperature the beverages than with PAH exposure. Drinking very hot liquids of any kind appears to increase the risk of oral and gastric cancers. If you’re one of those people who like your coffee, tea, or mate scalding hot, you might want to start letting them cool off a bit before drinking them.

If you’re one of those people who like your coffee, tea, or mate scalding hot, you might want to start letting them cool off a bit before drinking them.

Excessive caffeine consumption (whether from mate or another source) can lead to unpleasant symptoms like irritability, sleeplessness, or physical jitters. And people’s tolerance for caffeine varies greatly. For some, even a small amount of caffeine creates unpleasant effects. Others can consume quite a bit of caffeine without any problem.

The caffeine content of yerba mate is roughly midway between black tea and coffee, with coffee on the high end. If you’re new to mate or any caffeinated beverage, start with a small amount to see how it affects you, then increase gradually.

How is mate prepared?

You can buy mate pre-made (look near the canned iced tea). Or, you can brew your own. The traditional method is to pour near-boiling water over the leaves and steep for several minutes. The tea is then strained and served hot or cold, with or without the addition of a sweetener.

If you want to get really traditional, you’ll want to brew your mate in a gourd and sip it through a special metal straw with a filter at one end. Mate can also be shared as a ritual of friendship or hospitality. There’s a whole set of rules and manners that go along with that.

What does yerba mate taste like?

Many people would describe yerba mate is an acquired taste. Added sugar or honey can make it more palatable, although this also offsets the healthfulness somewhat. But I bet you didn’t love your first sip of coffee either, especially if you tried it black.

In truth, most traditional stimulant drinks are somewhat bitter due to the various plant alkaloids that give them their special properties. But, given their enduring popularity, the pleasant or useful effects of the caffeine must more than compensate for any initial aversion.

Green Goddess Vegan Salad Dressing

Prep Time: 10 mims Cook Time: 0 mins Total Time: 38 minute Yield: 1 ½ cups 1x

This healthy green Goddess dressing recipe is a creamy and delicious version of a classic dressing. It’s made without dairy or mayonnaise and we think this healthy version is far better tasting than the original!

Healthy green goddess dressing is made with:

Lots of parsley – a superfood that gives this salad dressing its bright green color
Olive oil – a heart-healthy fat
Nutritional yeast – adds richness as well as loads of B vitamins
Vinegar, miso, tahini, green onion, and garlic – umami flavors used instead of the traditional anchovies

1 cup fresh parsley, packed (if you have a high-powered blender you can use the stems and all. If you are using a regular blender, twist off the stems and use the leaves)

1 green onion, green part only
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons tahini
2 tablespoons miso paste (sub gluten-free soy sauce or coco aminos, as needed)
1 garlic clove

Place the ingredients into your blender and blend on high until smooth.
Store in a jar in your fridge for up to 1 week.

This dressing will thicken when it’s cold. Either warm it before using, or add a splash of water or oil to loosen it.

Make sure to use the coco aminos option for paleo and Whole30.

Weekly Horoscopes Beginning Sunday, 12 January 2020

If you`re born within cusp period (16 to 26 of any month); you`re advised to read horoscopes of both signs covered by that period. You`re in the border; you may have influences from houses within those signs.

Outlines are longer versions; consists of every possible detail of everyday and based on three parts of each sign: 1st, 2nd & 3rd Decan; that is, any of three divisions of 10° within a sign of the zodiac. Even if you know or don`t know your Decan; I recommend, please read all three Decan.

Personal theme: I am!!
Fire & cardinal sign: March 21 — April 19

Your horoscope for this week:

Nobody would blame you for battling unwelcome rules and regulation or demands by those in change. Ironically, this process is broadening your horizon in terms of both ideas, and activities, from places to go or, possibly, new plans or ambitions to pursue. First, decide what, and who, is worth fighting for. Once that`s clear, you can focus on shedding certain once-cherished dreams and creating new ones.

Your romantic partner or best friend will not mean to upset you. Comments they make might seem inconsiderate but they`ve just not thought about the impact of their words. Their remarks will make you despondent at first but if you take time to talk it over, you will overcome any negative feelings. A senior colleague`s advice is not meant to be taken literally. Although you respect their opinion, you might see alternative options. You need to appreciate the value of being versatile.

It could be argued that your year won`t get fully underway until the January 24th New Moon. For now, you may feel the need to draw a line in the sand and make clear what it is that you will and will not do work-wise. Certainly, if you take that approach you will be tuning into cosmic activity. It may be that an unacceptable level of responsibility has come your way. Much as at one level you could feel empowered, the problem with making the most of opportunities is that you might require the equivalent of personal assistant to ease you forward. In short, doing things alone (the preferred Aries way), may not work so well. This is perhaps not the time to undervalue yourself and yes, in negotiations make clear where boundaries lie. Transport cots could also be an issue requiring attention.

Personal theme: I have!!
Earth & fixed sign: April 20 — May 20

Your horoscope for this week:

In late December, your ruler Venus moved to accent pivotal decisions involving your way of living, working and priorities. While you`ve made some plans, others remain unclear. Actually, that`s wise, because you`ll be ready for sudden and, often, unexpected ideas and offers coming your way. The range is wide. Still, explore them all, since what seems least likely could be best in the long run.

Use your imagination and take the initiative. Your willingness to experiment will result in a new discovery. You`re able to pick up on possibilities and opportunities that other people have overlooked. Preparations for change are being set underway. An older relative will support and approve of your decisions. You are excited about an emerging friendship and it will feel good to mix with people who share your interests and beliefs. You might feel you have found a soulmate.

As for all signs, it would be understandable if you felt you`d hit the buffers. You may long for more information, greater expertise or quite simply, greater backup. It may be that every decision that needs to be taken seems just so very, very important and that the financial implications are huge. Yet your ruling planet, Venus, changes signs on Tuesday and it`s entirely possible that you`ll attract a colleague able and willing to assist you as you move forward. Yes, this might still require some tough talking but within days prove to have been a wise alliance. If the period between this Sunday alignment of Saturn and Pluto and the alignment of Jupiter with Pluto in November is considered a trial period, you could indeed make necessary adjustments along the way and develop this into something quite wonderful.

Personal theme: I think!!
Air sign: May 21 — June 20

Your horoscope for this week:

Ordinarily you`re not only easy-going about the unexpected, you enjoy the challenge of fitting the new in with existing plans and, sometimes, alliances. However, with forthright Mars accenting arrangements with others, personal and business, you`ve no choice but to be flexible. While annoying initially, you soon realise how much you`re learning from even unsettling twists and turns. Go with the flow. You won`t regret it..

You are about to give up on an idea before even trying. Are you using the fact that you`ve never done anything like this before as an excuse to turn down an offer or opportunity? This is your chance to gain new experience and improve your life. It`s always important to be willing to grow and change. If you`re struggling with a job you are working on, ask for help. Being receptive to an older colleague`s ideas will also pave the way for better working relationships.

You won`t be the only sign of the Zodiac to feel as though you`ve reached a dead end. The norm is of course to be excited about the New Year and the possibilities it offers. Yet you might still be clearing up the past and to some extent grieving for a time now lost. This week Venus arrives at the apex of your solar chart. This may be the moment to allow those born under Taurus or Libra to shine a torch on your very considerable talents and to assist you in seeing that the future is anything but bleak – though agreed, not quite what you`d imagined. Concern about someone who was supposed to be in charge but who is clearly overwhelmed by what they`ve taken on might prompt you to offer assistance and there may indeed be advantages to this. That said, it is important to continue conversations about what could yet be rather than living in the past.

Personal theme: I feel!!
Water & cardinal sign: June 21 — July 22

Your horoscope for this week:

The Cancer eclipsed Full Moon on 10 January may be powerful. However, because it`s linked to the second eclipse in your sign, mid-year, for now, both facts and your priorities should be regarded as tentative. Knowing that, you`ll explore with confidence and ensure you regard any decisions an experiment. In fact, instead, focus on exploring your options, especially those that are new and unfamiliar.

It`s not a time to take anything for granted. Don`t be in a rush to push practical matters out of the way. Double check the wording in contracts and documents and watch out for hidden clauses. A workmate will accuse you of nit-picking but ignore them. A meeting or interview could include someone you knew in the past. You`ve never found their company easy so this will make you nervous. It might come as a surprise to find you will actually get on really well together.

You may feel you`ve reached the end of the road in a working partnership. It may be that the other person has appeared less than cooperative in recent times. Yet it could be argued that the worst is now past. Yes, it will require effort to move forward, but that should be easier to do after Venus changes signs on Tuesday. Note too that Uranus is now in direct motion. The obstacles that have been there since August of last year should give way to exciting opportunity. Given the strong likelihood of you developing a new revenue stream, it`s arguably important that you`re not deflected from that task. In this you could have tremendous support. It`s also likely that the person who`s created the most significant difficulties will, from Friday, change their approach and attitude completely. True, it might take them some months to adjust to an altered routine. That said, their perspective on present challenges could yet prove most useful.

Personal theme: I will!!
Fire & fixed sign: July 23 — August 22

Your horoscope for this week:

While it`s natural to battle obstacles, for now, you`re urged to wait, watch and concentrate on what you can learn from them. While the latter won`t be immediately clear, by the time of early February`s pivotal Leo Full Moon, you`ll be glad you focused on what should go and, even more, on broadening your horizons. By then, mysteries will have turned into thrilling opportunities.

A trip to a close friend or relative will be interesting. They could be the opening you need to do something positive about a project you`ve been dreaming about. This is your chance to develop your creative ability. Love is always important to you. Very soon, there will be a successful outcome to a recent proposal or proposition. If you`re single, there`s a good chance you`ll be heading down the aisle. Joint agreements mark a positive turning point in a special relationship..

Imagine yourself as a builder who has excavated a plot of land -and it raining hard. Much as you may want to get on with laying foundations, you perhaps need to take shelter until the storm has passed. That time though need not be wasted. This gives you opportunity to note in which direction rain is falling and how best to weatherproof your home in light of new conditions (possibly caused by climate change). This week this is probably a time for consolidation, rethink, and yes, perhaps `putting the front door to what was the side`. This isn`t about altering direction altogether, but making fine-tuned adjustments. Property is likely to be involved and you might be considering exactly where you want to take root. It could take you the bulk of 2020 to arrive at that conclusion. For now, conversations with those born under Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn could be helpful – if only because it`s these individuals who understand how much effort will be necessary.

Personal theme: I analyse!!
Earth sign: August 23 — September 22

Your horoscope for this week:

Long ago you learnt that if you have your facts in order, you can overcome any obstacle or outwit those who`re trying to take advantage of the situation. However, with eclipses in late December and on 10 January shaking things up, the foundation on which even longstanding arrangements are based are shifting. For now, wait and watch. Urgent as decisions seem, you`re better off taking your time.

Revive your routine. Even small changes will make you feel as if life has something new to offer. If you`re thinking about taking a trip later in the month, make reservations now. A personal skill could come in useful for a working project. It may be necessary for you to take charge to help you move this venture forward. This will add to your prestige in the eyes of an important individual. Responding to an important request could result in a promotion.

Yours is perhaps justifiably known as the `worrying` sign of the Zodiac. Many born under Virgo have raised this to an artform. The quest for perfection and to have things running smoothly is super-great. Under present cosmic conditions however, running anything could be tricky. Fact is that the alignment of the Sun, Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn on Sunday is unusual. This marks the beginning of much longer cycle – lasting several decades. There is no need to rush in building something new. You`re right though to assess that your creative abilities are now consolidating. You may have a far better sense now both of your talents and how you can put these to use. Yes, you could meet opposition from someone who feels they are an expert and know what you should be doing. Listening to your inner voice against their demands will likely be a challenge. Yet this shouldn`t put you off. It`s very likely that even before Friday, they will sense that you`re onto something and if wise, give you the time to develop that idea.

Personal theme: I balance!!
Air & cardinal sign: September 23 — October 22

Your horoscope for this week:

While the dramas you`re facing are nothing new, since late last year the mood`s become more intense and events less predictable. Obviously, you`ve been hoping for a peaceable solution, but with so much in transition, it`s unlikely soon. Which means your time, energy and, possibly, heart are best focused on certain rather dull but less fraught practical matters. The rest? It can wait, possibly until mid-year.

You`re overly sensitive to atmosphere and you`re reading too much into things. Curb your over-active imagination. The silence as you walk into the room is not because you were the subject of the conversation. You prefer harmony to discord and yet you`re allowing your suspicions to come between you and the people who matter. An interview could change your life and you can`t wait to see where this might lead. Just remember, no news is often good news so don`t expect instant results.

Whether or not you are aware of it, you are laying foundations. The alignment of the Sun, Saturn and Pluto at the very base of your solar chart on Sunday marks the beginning of a cycle that`s several decades long. This is just the beginning. Though this is no excuse for procrastinating, it is likely important that you should take your time and work on plans slowly. By the time that Mercury reaches the highly creative zone of your solar chart on Friday, you should at least be aware of essentials and hopefully, have attracted support. Your cage could be rattled by someone living far away and whose approach is very different to your own. They may be pressing for answers feeling that too much has been `on pause` since August of last year. You don`t need to please them but you do need to please you. Taking time to consider your response carefully over Thursday and Friday and then leaving them to think about your proposal over the weekend should yet bring reward.

Scorpio & Ophiuchus
Personal theme: I desire!!
Water & fixed signs: October 23 — November 21

Your horoscope for this week:

Either you`ve kept certain facts to yourself or others have been secretive. Or both. Whatever the case, and it could vary from one situation to another, you`re better off revealing everything you can now, before it comes to light in a more complicated manner. Unlikely as it seems at the moment, having it all out in the open will be a huge relief.

You`ve grown out of a hobby or interest that used to fascinate you. You`ve got as much as you can out of this activity and you`re ready for something new. A friend doesn`t understand why you are bored but this situation no longer challenges you. Channel your energy into creative activities. Your contribution to a group project could favour your chances of promotion as your boss will recognise your talents and give you a reward.

Uranus is now moving forward in your opposite sign and anything that been held up since mid-August 2019 should now start to shows signs of life. True, that`s against the background of the Sun, Saturn and your ruling planet Pluto beginning a long cycle as of this Sunday. The difficulty with this alignment is that it`s indicative of bleakness and heaviness. Yet those of your sign knows that when all is dark, that eventually there will be spring. You`d be an unusual Scorpio if you didn`t attract someone with eccentric plans; and yes, there may be an element of black humour at work. Yet it`s also probable that amidst all this, you will form a curious alliance. Whether this is someone helping you with a project or you helping them with theirs, together you could make great progress – at least in determining a time-line. In a way, this week is all about project management and arriving at a definite schedule by Friday.

Personal theme: I see!!
Fire sign: November 22 — December 21

Your horoscope for this week:

When the situation merits, you`ve a knack for putting your own interests first while ensuring others are included in some way. Yet between the current emphasis on crucial practical, business or financial matters and the need to clearly define your requirements or even contractual demands, you`re in a tough spot. Or so it seems. The solution? Deal with your needs first, then next, those of others.

Disagreements over money is putting a strain on a close relationship. Put yourself on a strict budget until you have cleared your debts. A joint effort to take control of your money situation will be aimed at making your future more secure. It may not have been planned but the chance to join a training course is worth considering when this might help improve your career prospects. You could benefit from additional technical training.

If you`ve been stuck in doldrums, know that the way ahead will soon be clear. True, you do need a few days to take stock. You may well have been disorientated by events that have taken place since mid-August 2019. This Sunday`s rare alignment of the Sun, Saturn and Pluto is obviously important for all signs. In your case, reassessing assets and determining how best to make use of these could well be a priority. So, to may be health matters. It`s not necessarily the case that anything is wrong, but that preventative measures need to be taken. Work-wise it`s probable that there is still much to clear up before you can truly move forward. Archiving seems to be a major issue. Yet perhaps now is the time to delegate. It would be unusual if, before the end of this year, you aren`t called upon to take on the role of mentor and to ensure that treasures are preserved. Indeed, this could be regarded as your legacy.

Personal theme: I use!!
Earth & cardinal sign: December 22 — January 19

Your horoscope for this week:

The problem isn`t knowing what`s best. It`s explaining that to those whose perspective is based on the past or on pure sentiment. While this won`t be easy, what you learn, both about the situations in question but, even more, about your own options will more than justify the patience required. That being the case, regard those tedious discussions as the investment in your future that they are.

You or a relative will be keeping unusual hours. After the initial shock at having to drop everything to respond to a family member`s strange request, you will enjoy the experience. Now is your chance to meet new people and visit new places. You may not be able to make firm plans with an unpredictable friend but if you treat each day as a new adventure, you will have a lot of fun. Go with the flow.

The alignment of the Sun, Saturn and Pluto in your sign this Sunday (12th) with Jupiter not so far away, suggests that Capricorns will be in the cosmic headlights. Others will look to you to take the lead. You though may feel they`re hanging onto your coat-tails and expecting you to do all the work. Yet the heaviness of recent weeks should start to shift as Venus moves into Watery Pisces on Tuesday. You should then find that others are fractionally yes, just fractionally, more amenable to sharing the workload. Their ideas on presentation could yet prove critical. It may be important now to conclude one project before the end of January. Yes, you could once again feel as though you`re in a race against time. Yet this is one you could win given just a little bit of understanding and support.

Personal theme: I know!!
Air & fixed sign: January 20 — February 18

Your horoscope for this week:

Few things annoy you more than being cornered into committing to an arrangement when either the actual situation is in transition or others remain unclear about their priorities. While you`ve no choice, the trick is to ensure it`s all flexible, enough that as circumstances or the priorities of others shift so, too, can your plans. Organising this won`t be easy, but will end persistent stresses for good..

You`re about to enter an important new phase in romance. Abandoning yourself to pleasure will give you a new lease of life. It`s time to cut back on your social life and devote more time to romance and your closest relationships. Arrange a special treat or a candlelit dinner for two. At work, more and more jobs are being expected of you and if this continues, you`re worried that you won`t be able to cope. Speak up if you feel a senior colleague is being unfair.

One of your ruling planets, Uranus, is now moving forwards having been retrograde since August. Yet your other ruling planet, Saturn, is involved in a rare alignment with both the Sun and Pluto in neighbouring Capricorn on Sunday. Think of this as one set of brakes coming off as another is put on. This is like trying to drive with the handbrake still in position. Yet this may be no bad thing. Think of it as driving on an icy road where it`s important that you don`t go too fast too soon. You could indeed impress others – and greatly, – by your skills at the wheel.. Leadership ability should surface. You may also find that you get rounds of applause from those born under the Water signs of Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. In their very different ways, they will surely appreciate your sensitivity – and, most especially, your willingness to focus on the task in hand.

Personal theme: I believe!!
Water sign: February 19 — March 20

Your horoscope for this week:

You may struggle to accept the fact you simply can`t organise a plan that everybody will be happy with; but once you do, everything else will be so much easier. When others begin discussing their desires or dreams, listen but make no promises. Then focus on what you need to do, including matters involving the individuals in question. Say no more. Amazingly, everybody will be happy.

Your financial judgement is good. You will be making some important business decisions too and as always; you have high levels of intuition to rely on. Go with what you feel is right at this time and you won`t go wrong. There`s a lot you have to cope with in the family these days. You can`t continue with some plans without your loved ones` support but you will need to be persistent if you`re trying to get an older relative to help you.

Venus arrives in your sign on Tuesday. This marks the start of a couple of weeks when it ought not to be difficult for you to smooth relations and get others working as a team. Your magic touch here could make all the difference. Following on from a rare alignment of the Sun, Saturn and Pluto on Sunday – and which many could experience as a heavy cosmic downpour, – your willingness to try and make the best of this should shift the mood. There is much to suggest that you will be involved in a co-operative effort. Indeed, this could be multiple efforts as both at home and work you could find yourself in the role of coordinator. Whether or not this is sharing transport or relieving pressure in other ways, you could be much in the spotlight. It`s probable also that your presentation skills will be commented upon and yes, perhaps rewarded.
