Tasha’s Astro Planner for October 2017

October looks relatively well balanced with no heavy activity between the outer planets. Importantly, Jupiter changes signs this month, moving from Libra where he has been for the past year into Scorpio. This may signify the uncovering of secrets and the unraveling of mysteries over the twelve months. In addition those with water signs prominent in their charts may get a boost of good fortune over the next twelve months.

There are only two retrograde planets now, indicating that it is easier to move forward. Mercury begins in fair minded Libra moving to sharp Scorpio on the 17th, Venus starts in picky Virgo and moves into beauty loving Libra on the 14th, Mars begins in efficient Virgo and moves into artistic Libra on the 22nd while the Sun moves into passionate Scorpio the same day.

The Full Moon in Aries on the 5th, also known as the Harvest Moon, implies a gathering in of all that has been grown and tended over the past months since the New Moon in Aries in the spring. Look to your reaping and remember to separate the wheat from the chaff. The New Moon in Libra on the 19th suggests seeking balance. Wisely, going forward we can make the best use of what we have harvested during the Full Moon.

Squares and oppositions present opportunities to use difficult energy in constructive ways. Pluto symbolizes deep, possibly disruptive change; Saturn symbolizes structure and responsibly. For instance, when Venus, symbolizing choices is squared to Saturn/responsibility take a second look at what you might be choosing to accept or trying to avoid. Pluto squares could imply a resistance to change, resulting in difficulties. A Mars/Saturn square may indicate a need to be mindful of your actions. Uranus aspects usually indicate the unexpected.

Days to be mindful and use potentially disruptive or difficult energies constructively include the 8th with a Venus/Saturn square, the 9th with Mercury/Pluto and Sun/Pluto squares, the 11th with a Mars/Saturn square, the 15th with Mercury/Uranus opposition, , the 19th with Sun/Uranus opposition and a New Moon, and the 27th with a Venus/Pluto Square.

Trines imply an ease or facility for whatever action you may choose. Pluto trines can also make for insightful changes; conjunctions bring the combined energy of both planets to bear on whatever you may choose to do. A conjunction with Jupiter would provide a great boost to anything.

Days to be aware of a potential for positive action or benefits to be gained include the 1st with a Mars/Pluto trine, the third with a Venus/Pluto trine, the 5th with Venus/Mars conjunction and a Full Moon, the 8th with Sun/Mercury conjunction, the 18th with Mercury/Jupiter conjunction, the24th with Mercury/Neptune trine, and the 26th with Sun/Jupiter conjunction.

Magical Sticky Notes
Spell Date: Sunday, October 1, 2017
What on earth would we do without sticky notes? The Post-it Note was invented by accident in 1968 by a chemist named Spencer Silver. He was looking for a strong adhesive, but what he found was a low-tack adhesive that would stick to things but could be easily unstuck and moved. Today, sticky notes come in a multitude of sizes, shapes, and colors.

If you haven’t already done so, add sticky notes to your magical repertoire. Try this. At your next ritual, instead of putting actual things (figures of deities, elemental tools, etc.) on your altar, buy large sticky notes in appropriate colors. Draw gods and goddesses, elemental beings, astrological symbols, etc., on them and stick them to your altar(s). Invoke the powers drawn and named on the sticky notes. Move the sticky notes when necessary. Just don’t try to substitute little pieces of paper for cakes and ale.

Day of Forgiveness
Spell Date: Saturday, September 30, 2017
Forgiveness is a tricky thing, and it’s usually far easier to forgive others than to forgive ourselves. Today is Yom Kippur within the Jewish tradition, a day of atonement for the sins of the year past. Why not perform a simple ritual of forgiveness for yourself today?

Light a white candle and gather a pad of paper, a favored writing implement, and a bar of chocolate. Get comfy and light the candle. On the paper, list the things that you need to work toward forgiveness for. As you write each item, take a moment to dwell on it and remind yourself of why you deserve to be forgiven. When you’re done, burn the list in a fireproof bowl, then sit back and enjoy the chocolate as you contemplate life without those burdens. Repeat as often as necessary.

Keepers of the Alphabet
Spell Date: Friday, September 29, 2017
A sizable garden orb-weaving spider appeared at my bedroom window early one morning. The web was large, covering almost the entire window, and thankfully it was on the outside of the glass pane. This allowed me to get quite close. Every morning for a week or so, the spider was there. Sometimes a future meal lay wrapped and suspended in the web. Before the sun rose all the way, the spider would be gone. One day I waited and watched to see where the spider went. It grabbed the meal, slowly descended the web, and crawled under a tab of siding.

A hard rain destroyed the web one night, and the spider never reappeared. It was simply fascinating to watch and such an inspiration to me. Spiders are the keepers of the alphabet, and being a writer, I took this to mean I’d better stop procrastinating and get working on several upcoming projects.

Teotihuacan and Arachne,
Spider women of all legends,
Spinners, weavers,
keepers of the alphabet,
Your beauty and perseverance
Inspire us in all things domestic
and literate.

Willful Aim
Spell Date: Thursday, September 28, 2017
Practice your powers of willful living with a bit of short-term goal setting. To evoke meticulously planned success, acquire eight small sheets of gold leaf-specked rice paper from an origami or stationery supply store. Draw a vivid blue arrow on each one using a nontoxic marker. Flip the sheets over and on the back of each, draw a circle with a dot in the middle. Within this circle, write a goal that you are currently striving to achieve.

Fold each small sheet into a paper arrow or airplane. Launch these darts into the back of your kitchen cupboards and pantry shelves. As they hide in the recesses of your family larder, they will generate luck and manifestation around all of the foods that you eat. This will energetically fuel your success and remind you with every meal why the liberty of a willful life is worth striving a little bit harder for.

Cleansing, Charging, and Blessing a Stone or Crystal
Spell Date: Wednesday, September 27, 2017
When acquiring a new stone or crystal, it will benefit from being magickally prepared before use.

Cleanse your stone with the four elements: bury it in salt or soil, allow it to sit in the open breeze, charge it in direct sunlight, and immerse it in pure water, allowing twenty-four hours ( longer if possible) for each step.

Charge your stone by leaving it on your altar for twenty-four hours, accompanied by your most important magickal tools and items during this process. If the stone will be used for lunar magicks, it should charge through a full lunar cycle, including time sitting in the full moon’s light.

To bless your stone, rise at dawn. Lift it toward the rising sun (east) and then to the south, west, and north, saying:

“Powers of the universe, may this stone
be blessed to purpose, and may I use it
with knowledge and respect.”

Keep the stone close to you for the next nine days.

Your Deepest Desires
Spell Date: Tuesday, September 26, 2017
We work, worry, pay bills, and make appointments. When we’re busy, it’s usually our most intimate undertakings that get pushed aside-relationships neglected, creativity abandoned, self-care lost.

Today, take care of the mundane details of your life and make space for dreamtime. Take your lunch to a quiet spot, leaving the work crew or your family behind. If you work outside the home, use your commute time to get in touch with your deepest desires. Ask yourself:

“What is my heart’s desire?”

Listen carefully to what arises. Ask:

“Where will I plant these seeds?”

Identify a half-hour slot in your day when you could regularly invest in your dreams. When the seed is planted, our deepest desires grow. Next year you could have a completed manuscript, written in half-hour increments at lunch, or a healing daily meditation practice, undertaken completely on public transit. Today, seed your deepest desires.

Harvesting Happiness
Spell Date: Monday, September 25, 2017
By the end of September, the harvest is in full force in most places. Corn and squash and apples are wonderful symbols of the season, but don’t forget to do magical work to harvest the less tangible things that you planted the seeds for earlier in the year. If your crop needs a little boost, this spell is a good way to nourish it.

If you can, say this outside with your feet on the land. But if you can’t, just take a moment to open yourself to the harvest energy all around. If you have an altar, decorate it with seasonal vegetables. Say:

“I planted my seeds for happiness and joy,
Success and prosperity, healing and love.
And now I wish to harvest my bounty
With the blessings of the gods above.
So mote it be.”

Visualize all those things you wish to harvest in your life.

Heartwings Love Notes 795 Playing Around on my Harp

Heartwings says: “Making music is good for us, no matter how we do it.”

A musician by avocation, from the time I was a young child I was usually involved in some kind of music making. At my grade school, weekly music classes consisted of the teacher playing the piano as we sang British folk songs and music from Gilbert and Sullivan, typed and collected into a loose-leaf notebook. Later she gave me private piano lessons. These ended after two years for two reasons: I found the practice songs to be boring and my mother, an amateur musician and child prodigy on the violin, disliked my fumbling attempts at learning the piano. She didn’t even like it when I played around on the piano keys, making my own music for myself.

Later I sang in various choruses at various schools and then in my church choir. To my delight one year my then husband bought me a guitar for my birthday. I began teaching myself to play. There followed a number of years playing and singing in coffee house, at hootenannies, and then professionally for parties and special occasions. I also played for patients as a volunteer at our local hospital. My mother seemed pleased that I was following in the family musical tradition. Encouraged by her, and a poet by inclination I began to write my own songs. The melodies were simple, reminiscent of the many folk songs and hymns I had sung over the years.

Although I enjoyed playing the guitar, from the time I was a young child the idea of playing the harp had attracted me. However, the many strings of the large harps looked difficult compared to the guitar and surely transporting one would be a nightmare. Then I injured my shoulder and because of the position required for me to play, had to retire my guitar. After reading many articles on the importance of keeping the older brain alive, and disliking the recommended suggestion to do crossword puzzles, I decided to try a smaller folk harp. Searching the internet, I discovered a lap harp with a playable nineteen strings and purchased it from the maker along with a book to learn from.

I spent a respectable amount of time learning the initial songs and techniques. As I advanced, the lessons became increasingly difficult. I realized I was losing interest in playing. I felt frustrated and began to neglect my harp, even allowing it to get out of tune. My mother’s former diatribes from the days I used to play on the piano rather than practice my lessons had come back to haunt me. Then one day I realized I could do what I liked. I didn’t have to play actual songs; I could just enjoy myself, making musical sounds. I could play for fun. I began to do that. Spontaneous tunes emerged in my head and then from my fingers. Playing my harp has become a treat and the music I make from my heart has become a daily joy.

May you find new joys and have fun doing what comes to you in the moment.

Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

PS What joys have you discovered in your life lately? Write and tell me; I so appreciate hearing from readers.

Stephen Halpert
Magee and The Haunted House
Part 1

This story begins at Sunday dinner. We were at Captain Mallory’s old farmhouse on the banks of the Blackstone River. Two patrolmen, officers Matt Cane and Charley Brigham were bringing platters from the kitchen into the dining room. I was poised by the dining room table, watchful in case there was stray food.
Sippi Bopp, my owner companion was wearing her new fall dress. It was green with colored swirls that made me feel dizzy.
Just so everyone reading this knows I’m Magee, the nine-pound Silky Terrier who started as the star of Dig Dog Dig on the Canine Channel.
I’m now the official dog detective for our police department. I’ve my own badge, and my citations signed by the Mayor and retired Chief Homer Redtoe hang on the wall in Sippi’s office.
Raven Jones came in carrying two six packs of beer. He grinned at Sippi and blew her a kiss. She grinned back and gave him her wide eyed look.
I was glad that they’d grown closer. Whatever came down between them while they both were in rehab after their pro basketball careers were sidetracked by injuries, had passed and now I notice that sometimes they hold hands.
Ku, the Siamese cat who lives with us had told me that one day Sippi will marry Raven.
A smile curled around the edges of her mouth. Her voice softened and she looked at him meaningfully. “Euro Dark?”
Raven smiled, slightly shook his head. “You gotta try this instead, gluten free.” He waved a bottle at her. “Put away as much as you want and not get fat.”
“Raven, I don’t get fat, never did, never will,” she snapped. “I hope you’re not thinking of coming between me and my Euro Dark.” Then she grinned and tossed me a spicy shrimp snack.
Raven wore his black tee shirt with the FBI insignia on its sleeve, jeans and his fancy black loafers. I love it that he lets me sniff them. And I must admit that sniffing freshly applied shoe polish is intoxicating.
He handed her a bottle. “All the guys at the gym…”
“You mean you didn’t bring me my Euro Dark?” Her voice was flat like she was writing a speeding ticket.”
Sippi winked at me and tossed me a spicy tuna ball. Captain Mallory hung up his phone and came into the dining room. He looked at us and sighed. “No rest for the weary.”
He shifted his attention to Sippi and Raven. I could tell something was upsetting him. He fidgeted in his shirt pocket for his smelly cigar stub.
“You’re not going to light that thing in here are you?” Sippi said as he started moving it toward his lips.
“It’s my house,” he said defensively.
“Still,” Sippi said. “Please don’t. Besides it doesn’t set a good example for our young patrolmen here.”
“Let him be,” Raven said. “He doesn’t usually even light up.”
“Young,” patrolman Matt Cane laughed. “Thank you Sippi. Please tell my wife that.”
Raven speared a slither of smoked salmon and devoured it faster than even I could. Then he took another. He must have been hungry.
“Before we break bread, ” Mallory said. He sounded weary. He looked over at me, “You especially Sherlock. I want you in on this from the beginning.” He flashed me his toothy grin I always took to be a warning to pay attention.
“Something wrong,” Sippi asked?
“Just when you think we might have a quiet fall something like this has to happen. That was Killbat I was talking to at the State Police. Three prisoners from an institution for the criminally insane have tunneled their way out of federal lockup and may be headed in this direction. I’ll have the file by morning.”
“Someone on the outside had to be helping them,” Raven said. “That
sort of escape takes ingenuity, manpower and money.”
“What do you know about them?” patrolman Bingham asked
Raven frowned. “What makes you think they’ll be coming this way?”
“One has family named Croft over in Twin Forks,” Mallory said. “That’s all we know. It’s a possibility we have to look into.”
“Same name as that abandoned Victorian mansion that once was a restaurant and after hours club.” Patrolman Jeff Hatch said. “Back when I was a kid I remember my parents talking about Croft House and the wild goings on. There was even talk of ghosts.”
“Pays to be a native,” Sippi said.
“Sometimes,” Patrolman Hatch said. “Sometimes not.”
“Wasn’t that the place that caught fire and was declared haunted by the press?” Officer Brigham Hill said. He set two bowls of vegetables on the table.
Mallory raised his eyebrows. “Haunted? I’m not so sure about that?”
“This whole thing’ sounds too creepy for me,” Sippi said. “I remember as a girl my Aunt Bea taking me to séances. They were all very real, and I felt ghostly presences.” She picked me up and hugged me protectively. “You find this frightening too, don’t you Sweetheart?”
I squirmed. I wasn’t sure exactly what she was talking about but I could sense her nervousness and that’s not a good thing because when Sippi gets nervous that’s usually when she puts me on my leash. Sippi calls it keeping me safe. I think of it as protective custody. I love Sippi but she doesn’t always realize I’m a cop and not some lap dog to be coddled.
“After lunch we ought to drive over and take a look,” Raven said. He handed Sippi a beer.
She took a sip, then another, wrinkled her nose and put it down. “Like I said, Raven don’t ever come between me and my Euro Dark again.”
He sighed and nodded. “I guess I owe you one.”
“Yes, might be good to drive over and take a look, ” Mallory said. “And bring Sherlock along. See what he can sniff out.”
I waged my tail. Whenever he called me Sherlock I know the game is afoot.

Free of Gravity
By Madisyn Taylor

We take flight mentally when we rise above our habitual ways of thinking about things and experience new insights.
As earthbound beings, humans have always had a fascination with winged creatures of all kinds. The idea of being able to spontaneously lift off from the earth and fly is so compelling to us that we invented airplanes and helicopters and myriad other flying machines in order to provide ourselves with the many gifts of being airborne. Flying high in the sky, we look down on the earth that is our home and see things from an entirely different perspective. We can see more, and we can see farther than we can when we’re on the ground. As if all this weren’t enough, the out-of-this-world feeling of freedom that comes with groundlessness inspires us to want to take flight again and again.

Metaphorically, we take flight whenever we break free of the gravity that holds us to a particular way of thinking or feeling or being. We take flight mentally when we rise above our habitual ways of thinking about things and experience new insights. This is what it means to open our minds. Emotionally, we take flight when the strength of our passion exceeds the strength of our blockages; the floodgates open and we are free to feel fully. Spiritually we take flight when we locate that part of ourselves that is beyond the constraint of linear time and the world of form. It is in this place that we experience the essential boundlessness that defines the experience of flight.

Taking flight is always about freeing ourselves from form, if only temporarily. When we literally fly, in a plane or on a hang glider, we free ourselves from the strength of gravity’s pull. As we open our minds and our hearts, we free ourselves from habitual patterns of thought and emotional blockages. As we remember our true nature, we free ourselves from identification with the temporary state of our physical forms. The more we stretch our wings, the clearer it becomes that taking flight is a state of grace that simply reminds us of who we really are.

13 Autumn Prompts for Your Witch’s Grimoire
by witchoflupinehollow

We all have trouble finding inspiration sometimes, especially when it comes to developing and working with our grimoires. I’ve written many posts on how to develop your grimoire in my Complete Guide to Grimoires series and Grimoire Page Template series, but I’ve never really talked much about working with your grimoire on a day to day basis.

That’s why I’ve decided to start a Grimoire Prompts series as well, to help spark your inspiration and get you working with your book of magick regularly! Some of these will be journaling prompts, to inspire meditations and deep personal reflection, while others will be designed to get you thinking about sections to add to your grimoire, laying out pages, etc.

For this first post in the series, I’m going to focus on the theme of autumn – the witch’s season!

1… Work with the fall astrological signs of Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius and record information you find about the energies of these signs in your grimoire.
2… Journaling prompt: What in your life is coming to an end? How do you feel about that?
3… Profile herbs associated with Samhain, such as Rosemary, Mugwort and Yarrow.
4… Design a tarot spread for fall or Samhain and record it in your grimoire for future use. Themes for your spread could include letting go of something or connecting with your ancestors/ancestral knowledge.
5… Autumn is associated with the crone aspect of the Triple Goddess. Research the crone and goddesses associated with her and record what resonates with you in your grimoire.
6… Record the steps you take in your Samhain and Blood Moon rituals. It can be very helpful and enlightening in the future to be able to refer back and see what you did and how you felt at the time.
7… Research traditional witchcraft in your ancestral culture. Are there any particular spells or practices that you can incorporate into your own magick? Record them in your grimoire.
8… Journaling prompt: How does the crone goddess present herself in your own life? Is there someone that you think represents her? How do you relate to her wise and often misunderstood energy personally?
9… Have a favorite fall recipe? Look up the magickal associations of the main ingredients and record the recipe in your grimoire.
10. Sketch a plan for your fall garden, along with how you are physically and spiritually clearing out the garden from summer. Note what the magickal associations of your new fall plants are.
11. Profile crystals associated with Samhain, such as Bloodstone, Obsidian and Black Tourmaline.
12. Journaling prompt: Fall and Samhain are sometimes associated with inner darkness and understanding that side of ourselves. How do you deal with dark thoughts when they occur? How can you better harness that darkness and turn it into something productive and useful?
13. Carved pumpkins or jack-o-lanterns are a traditional form of protective magick. Sketch out your ideas and final plans for your jack-o-lantern this year in your grimoire! Incorporate protective sigils or pentagrams into the design for an extra magickal boost.

About The Morning Feast and – The teachings here are based
on ordinary magick, the principle that the mundane and the Divine are not
separate, but peacefully coexist in all things. Know Mother Earth as the
ultimate healer, and learn to utilize her gifts of nature. Inside each woman
is a being of wisdom, deeply connected to the phases of the moon and the
tides of the sea. All we need to do is trust our innate wisdom.
