Checking in on Our Project Garden
Spell Date: Sunday, June 25, 2017
Back on May 9th, we prepped and planted our Project Gardens, making sure all our projects’ needs were met. We put together the basics, and hopefully we have the seeds of our projects set out. Now it’s time to check in on the projects. Feed the projects water energy to make them grow. Use your emotional strengths to make the projects move forward. Keep a visual of water flowing and constantly moving and pushing your projects forward. Your heartfelt intent is vital for these projects to succeed.
Have you heard back on any of your projects? What kind of results are you getting? Do you need to follow up? Are you watering your projects to keep the flow going? Projects are just like plants: they need attention. Put your best foot forward. Smile as you make contacts. Impress people with your enthusiasm and attention to detail.
Keep that focus of achieving your project goals. Water your projects with love as they grow. Your determination is what will help you achieve your goals.

The bright days of summer are some of the best times to commune with the fairies. Remember that they are elemental creatures, not the cute little winged folk they are sometimes portrayed as, and always treat them with respect. If you wish to speak with the fairies, it is best to bring them a small offering or gift, such as a flower, a tiny cupcake, a small bowl of mead or milk, or anything shiny. Find a quiet space outside—a park will do if you don’t have a yard—and put your gift down under a bush or tree. Sit silently, and when you feel as though you might not be alone, say:
“I greet you, my fairy cousins, And give you greetings and a gift. I ask for your blessing Under the summer sun.”

Fluff the Pillows
Spell Date: Friday, June 23, 2017
Summer is here, and it’s time to fluff the pillows and change the sheets. It’s amazing how such a simple act can refresh your mind, body, and spirit. It has been said that we spend one-third of our lives sleeping, yet sleep and nighttime rest remain elusive for many.
The essential oils of lavender and rose are uplifting, calming, and peaceful. Add several drops of each oil to a half cup of spring water and combine in a spray bottle. I like to use cobalt blue bottles, which are readily available at any natural food store.
The next time you change your sheets and pillowcases, fluff your pillows and mist your entire bed with the spray.
You can also mist yourself right before sleep to bring harmony to your dreamtime and relax your state of being.
Keep the bottle by your bedside to use whenever the need arises.

The Dressing of the Altar
Spell Date: Thursday, June 22, 2017
Periodically you should do a blessing for your altar. Take everything off it. Wash it carefully with glass cleaner and/or furniture polish, depending on the material. Wait for it to dry.
Add a light coat of magical “dressing” oil. You can buy this in many styles at a Pagan supply shop. If you want to make your own, a good carrier oil is almond oil, scented with a little oil of frankincense, benzoin, sandalwood, and myrrh. As you rub in the oil, say:
“Sweet oil, bless this altar with power and keep it pure.”
Give the oil time to soak in.
Cover your altar with an altar cloth. Ideally you should have ones to match the seasons, different deities or themes, etc. One good trick is to have a reversible God/Goddess cloth. Cover the altar and say:
“Sacred cloth, shield this place from all negativity.”
Return your altar tools to their places.

Spell Date: Wednesday, June 21, 2017
For this spell, you will need:
* A crafter’s mask
* Crafter’s latex-free gloves
* One clear and smooth-surfaced glass lantern
* A fairy stencil
* A fern leaf stencil
* Masking tape
* A small paintbrush
* Glass-etching liquid
* Paper towels
* A tealight candle
With mask and gloves firmly in place, fix the stencils to the lantern using masking tape. Use the paintbrush to apply an even coat of etching. Wait three minutes and apply another even coat. When you are satisfied with the results, clap, whistle, and ring bells to awaken your sprites.
Carefully remove each stencil and wipe them clean with a damp paper towel. Then reapply the etching liquid evenly in another location on the glass using the stencils. Repeat this process until your lamp is covered in a flurry of frenzied fairies.
Rinse your glass lantern in cold, soapy water and carefully towel-dry. When a tealight candle is lit inside the lantern, your fire fairies will leap to life.

The Blessed Bees
Spell Date: Tuesday, June 20, 2017
There’s always someone we don’t like but still have to work with. This is someone on whom to use Blessed Honey and/or Blessed Venom.
Before your next contact with this person, close your eyes, and in your imagination pour a bucket of Blessed Honey over them. The sweetness will hopefully flow into all their pores and sweeten their disposition. The stickiness will also keep them too busy to annoy you while you’re working together.
If you don’t need a whole bucket of honey, imagine a smaller container, such as a cup or a tablespoon. If the person is still difficult, however, invoke the bees again and ask them to give the person a good, strong antibiotic shot of Blessed Venom (the product, of course, of the bees).

Spell Date: Monday, June 19, 2017
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, or the third Saturday of June, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
Gather a variety of chains. A home improvement store like The Home Depot is helpful, or you might have some chains around the house: heavy chains meant to hold chandeliers, bike chains, jewelry chains, etc.
Take your chains out into some empty place, such as a field, a junkyard, etc. Pick up a chain and name it after something that binds you. For example: “This is a chain of guilt,” or “This chain is my mother’s unreasonable demands,” or simply “Fear.”
Throw the chain as far as you can. If you’re doing this with friends, take turns. Have fun, shouting as you celebrate freedom from each chain.
Celebrate your new freedom with a traditional Juneteenth meal of barbeque.
It seems wrong to use such an important celebration just for personal and internal freedom, so top off your spell with a donation to an organization that fights injustice.

Heartwings Love Notes 781 It’s the Little Things that Matter
Heartwings says, “Happiness is made up of small smiles harvested daily.”
It seems to me that I was born with the need to accomplish. In many ways, this has been a source of my happiness and a way of making myself feel good. I can remember when I was a young mother that time spent in the kitchen was a great balm for any disappointment or dismay. Baking cookies for my children helped keep me cheerful. Even simple tasks like the ironing I did then were helpful to me in lifting my spirits.
While the link between accomplishment and happiness is still strong in me, there is another link that is even stronger. It consists of the opportunities to notice what makes me happy. It functions for me when I notice the beauty around me, it is delivered in the joy I receive when I walk with Stephen in the mornings and listen to the birds twittering and chirping around us. When I get a phone call or an email from a friend I haven’t heard from for a while, my heart fills and I smile. I feel happy when I read the morning newspaper, sharing stories from it with my husband.
It is truly said that happiness does not work as a goal. If for instance I buy something I have wanted it may make me happy for a little while yet that kind of happiness does not last. Not unlike taking a drink of alcohol or indulging in sweets, the good feelings gained this way dwindle soon. This diminishment is one of the stimuli for addictive behavior. Once the good feeling is gone it is normal to wish for more in order to regain or prolong it.
However, the happiness that comes from the appreciation of what is given is not addictive nor can it be sought. It comes from the practice of awareness, of noticing some small joy or gladness that comes to us as a kind of gift. It also helps to have an understanding of what makes us feel happy so that we can take extra care to notice it when it is given to us. I must open my eyes and ears to notice the beauty around me in order to appreciate it. I need to remember to look out the window to see the lovely sunset when it glows there. This kind of happiness lasts beyond the experience and nourishes me in many ways.
May you feel grateful for the small gifts of happiness that come your way, and may they nourish your spirit.
Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert TashaHal@aol.com
Thank you for reading my words. If you have anything to shares about your own happiness, please feel free to email me and let me know. I do so love to hear from readers, and I promise to respond as soon as I can.
Domestic Tranquility: Ants Ahoy
They were coming at me from out of the woodwork. Their leader appeared gigantic and waved a mighty warlike club. They moved in on me. Suddenly I understood what might well have flashed through Custer’s mind during his last moments of life at Little Big Horn.
Then I awoke, sat up in bed and rubbed my eyes.
“You were dreaming,” Tasha said. “I could hear you in the kitchen.” Even though it was early she was up and into the day.
“They were ants and they weren’t friendly,” I grimaced.
“Oh dear,” she sympathized. “Now you’re dreaming about them. It’s bad enough when you see them in the kitchen cabinets.”
“Yesterday several were crawling around my computer acting like they owned the place.”
She sighed. “I’ve sprayed vinegar on the counters and around the doors and windows like I always do but this time they didn’t seem to mind it.”
I dressed and joined her for breakfast. “Maybe ants are getting more sophisticated; preferring bottled water with a splash of vinegar to start their day.” I didn’t have my glasses on but I’d have sworn I saw a blueberry moving across the kitchen counter.
Tasha sipped her tea. I looked at it again just to be sure. “I hate to tell you this, there’s a blueberry on the counter being kidnapped by ants.”
She put down her cup, turned and looked. “I don’t see anything.”
“It’s behind something then. At least that’s what I thought I saw. Maybe I need some down time to come to terms with the idea that I’m living amidst an infestation of ants.”
She laughed. “Don’t be silly. Ants are known to scout around for food this time of year. They don’t bite. Just be friendly and they’ll go away faster.”
“And how am I supposed to do that. Offer them some organic peanut butter on sesame crackers? I’m sorry but I have a better idea. I’m going to tell the landlord that we’ve got ants. Then it will be taken care of.”
“No!” She exclaimed. “You can’t do that! I don’t want poison in this apartment.”
“Who are you the Joan of Arc of ants? What do you mean?” I feared we had run aground in a situation where her environmental policies far out-greened mine.
“Then I’ll go to the hardware store and buy a box of those Ant Castles. They’ll take a lick of something that for an ant really tastes great and then go home to die. It has no ill effects upon humans. I’m sure of that.”
But you don’t know that for sure,” she said. “Poisons have their own way of infiltrating the air. Just look at what happens to some people when they innocently spray those horrid pesticides on their lawns. Besides I don’t care about the ants.” She put some dishes in the sink. “I’m trying to protect us by looking out for our best interests. I don’t want us subjected to the chemicals and poisons released into the air when that stuff is prevalent.”
I finished my tea. “You mean that don’t you?”
“Of course! But please feel perfectly welcome to come up with a solution as long as it doesn’t involve,” she smiled, “murder by poison.”
“I suppose I could take flute lessons, do a Pied Piper and lead them all out of the apartment and across the parking lot.” I grinned. “But taking away one’s weaponry sure puts a crimp in the art of man/ant warfare.”
“I wouldn’t think that way,” she said. “If I were you I’d look more in the direction of conflict resolution.”
I got up and went to my computer. “Oh, you’d prefer to see me sitting on the rug negotiating with them. Perhaps even giving in to some of their demands.”
She grinned. “Something like that. “I wonder if you mashed and sprayed garlic on the counters if that might discourage them.
“You mean we have vampire ants?”
“Well I don’t know what else to suggest and I have to get started on my work for today. Why don’t you look on the Internet and see if you can find a benign and non toxic substance that could lure them away.”
“I need something more immediate.”
She nodded. “You could always ask St Francis for help.”
“Good idea.” I headed toward the door. “I’ll be back in a few.”
I walked outside through the parking lot, up a grassy slope and stood in a tranquil wooded grove. “St. Francis,” I prayed, “Please convince the ants to leave our apartment. I’d be so very grateful. Thank you.”
When I came back Tasha was at her computer. “I asked for his help like you suggested.”
She nodded. “I didn’t see any in the kitchen while I was making the salmon salad for our lunch.”
“That’s optimistic. What’s really so ironic about all this is that in many cultures people eat ants like candy. I read in the September National Geographic that the Australian Aborigines chew red ants that have a zesty lemony flavor. Perhaps eventually with impending food shortages eating ants and other insects will become au courant.”
“I hope you’re not going to start eating ants,” she said.
“I wouldn’t worry about that if I were you.”
“Oh I’m not,” she smiled. “It’s just that if you did I don’t know what I’d tell the children.”
Animal Spirit and Medicine: Crow Spirit
by Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs
SPIRIT OF CROW
Role: Carrier of Lost Souls into Light
Lesson: To Understand the Shadow Within
Wind: West The Quest Within
Night descends upon the ancient forest as a silky shawl of midnight blue,
settling over all that she encounters upon her journey,
she leaves everything she touches changed in
the shimmering veil of her silver light.
Perched atop the hard surface of granite boulders that dot the mountainside,
Crow stands, head cocked to the side, affording him a gaze
of the moon, as she rides the pathway
of the autumn sky.
From the beginning of the time when Great Spirit transformed Crow
from the form of a two-legged to the shape he now wears,
Crow has dwelled simultaneously in Two Worlds,
one of the earth & the other of the sky.
He is the Watcher that has observed we of the Two-Legged
as we walk along the Red Road of Physical Life.
He stands, ever vigilant, at the Gateway between shadow and light,
watching for the Soul that is beginning to Unfold, and then,
with a beckoning call, black wings touch our face,
and we Journey with him, flying from
the Night of denial, and awakening
with acknowledgments Day.
CARRIER OF LOST SOULS INTO LIGHT
The Crow is a creature that has elicited much thought and speculation amongst all indigenous peoples and across many cultures and times.
To some, Crow is a harbinger of “evil” or portend of physical death, to others, he is one who offers the choice to fly free of the chains of the past and to soar toward self-knowing, yet all seem to agree, that this Animal Totem possesses a powerful energy (Medicine) contained within his small frame.
One who has the honor of having Crow fly by his/her side is an individual who has the Role of carrying souls lost in pain, denial, bitterness or ill intent, into the light of forgiveness and self-awareness.
When we are reeling in the darkness of emotional pain and turmoil, confused by denying that which we don`t want to see or feeling bitter over the actions of those who have hurt us, betrayed us or rejected us in the “past,” we have become lost on our Path. It is the Role of one who has Crow as their Power Totem, to then find those lost souls and call to them to make the journey into the light of awareness, and eventually, sincere forgiveness.
For one who does not have Crow as their Power Totem (yet has lost the sense of their Life Path), it is Crow that they would call upon to carry them to re-align with their Path once more, as she is the Totem whose vision sees through the darkest of Nights to find the way back home.
Yet in order that one with Crow Totem can carry others into the Light, he/she must first find their own way free of the shadows of the past. This can be an arduous task, yet is essential to fulfilling their Role as Carrier of Lost Souls into Light, for how can they fulfill a task that they have not yet completed for themselves?
To assist them in this process, Crow Souls have been blessed with the ability of keen perception, to see right to the core of their own Self. This is reflected in Nature as the Crow is considered to be the most intelligent and perceptive of all Winged Ones, and she is renowned for her abilities in cognizant thought and strategy.
Whether turned within to gain an understanding of herSelf or reflected back as a mirror to Others so that they may know themSelves, this is a beautiful gift bestowed upon a deserving Soul.
All who hear the caw of the Crow immediately recognize that raspy voice. Yet, in reality, that particular call is only one of the sounds that Crow will utilize to make a statement, call out his territory, or alert other crows to impending danger, though without a doubt, it is his caw that most two-leggeds recognize him by.
He will also make a very distinct chirping sound when he is singing in the morning or welcoming the moon into the night sky, and he can elicit tingles along the spine of the listener when he is warning others of infringement upon his territory, or of danger approaching, with a call that is halfway between a screech and a caw.
For anyone who is born with Power Totem of Crow, communication is an integral part of their flight along the Sacred Hoop of life. They are here to express the depth of what they feel, to alternately inspire others with their vision of Life, or to transport them, through beautifully woven words, into other realms and planes of Being.
Yet for their keen intelligence and ability to communicate the intensity, scope, and beauty of their own experiences to Others, Crow Soul is one who struggles to find and define him/herself to the Self. Years and even lifetimes may be spent in gradually coming to an understanding and embracing of all the facets that make up their Personality, Mind, and Soul.
Part of the process is in uncovering the Shadows Within that all possess along this Earth Walk. These are the areas of our Self that represent our greatest lessons and opportunities for growth, yet can remain elusive to our grasp and understanding. However, once these “shadows” have been fully understood and integrated, then the journey upward to the light of the Higher Self can be easily attained and serve as inspiration for Others.
To achieve this demands that one go Within and illuminate all of the corners of the subconscious where shadows still linger. To open the door to the corridors of pain where the past still haunts the soul and shed the Light of awareness so that true Healing may occur. Then, Crow Soul may share his/her insight, understanding and awareness with others through words (written or spoken) in either literal or metaphorical language, that will invoke understanding and inspiration within Others to reach for the Light within themselves.
This is the Journey of the Soul from Night into Day . . . the blessing of Crow to both the Self and the Gift to Others.
Crows are known for their tendency to observe all that is happening around them and to alert other crows nearby at the first sign of an intruder or danger. Their keen eyes miss nothing, and when an approaching threat is noticed, they will sound the alarm with their throaty caws echoing in the air.
It is believed that because of their tendency to call out when intruders are around, they have been given the task of being the Messengers of the Ancestors. In other cultures and times, the belief that they are messengers of the Spirit Realm is also predominant, as in ancient Roman mythology, where a white crow was said to have delivered a foreboding message to Apollo, who then turned all ravens and crows black out of his anger at the bad news.
Like their Power Totem, Crow Souls are Sentinels who keep silent watch over all that is happening around them. They will first observe what is occurring, making mental notes on what has been seen, heard and experienced. They will then translate these thoughts into either spoken or written format, sharing their observations with the world around them.
In esoteric astrology, the Crow would be considered to be much like Saturn, the Gatekeeper, who stands ever at the ready of the Doorway between Planes, keeping the Ancestors informed as to the progress and evolution of those who walk the Red Road. Yet Crow will also carry messages from the Ancestors to his/her fellow two-leggeds. This has earned the Crow Soul the responsibility of being the Watcher and the Sentinel, standing as a messenger between the realm of the physical, and the realm of the Spirit.
If Crow is not your personal Power Totem, yet has suddenly made an appearance in your life, then there are messages that the Ancestors are bringing to you that will likely be heralding significant changes in your life. The more crows that you encounter, the more likely the message is to be urgent and needing your acknowledgment and attention. Take the time to quietly go within, asking for clarification on the Message being delivered. Or it may be that you will be called upon to assist others in their journey from the darkness of denial into the light of awareness.
If Crow is your Power Totem and you are suddenly noticing him/her all about you, it is a time to go within, immersing yourself in quiet contemplation, listening to the messages you are to pay heed to for either your own Path or as a message to relay to Others.
Several creatures of the Earth Mother are believed to have been given the Gift of Shapeshifting, that is transforming from their animal state to that of a two-legged, and back again. Amongst these Beings who are said to possess this ability is the Crow.
It is said that the Elder Spirits will appear before a two-legged in the form of a Crow so that the strength, character, and faith of the mortal can be tested prior to receiving a special gift or honor. For this reason, Crow can be clever, attempting to trick the two-legged into folly. If the two-legged passes the test, then the Crow will transform his shape and appear before the mortal as an Ancient One, who will then deliver a message of great importance, or bestow an ability upon the one who has triumphed in the face of challenge or adversity.
One who flies with Power Totem Crow is an individual blessed with great Insight.
This ability to see to the very heart of a matter serves the Crow Soul well as he/she traverses the Earth Walk. With the keen perception and ability to grasp complex ideas and philosophies (initially on an intuitive level, followed by deductive reasoning), one with Power Totem Crow may transform the direction of their Journey, their belief system, and understanding, indeed their very Life here in Physical.
More often than not, one whose Soul shares a deep bond with Crow will be an individual who may experience an especially difficult early life, wherein a certain sense of detachment or “dis-connectedness” to other two-leggeds has been felt. This general sense of not belonging will exist on some level, and at varying intensities, throughout their physical life, or until a deeper level of understanding and acceptance has been attained.
Perhaps it is because, like their Animal Totem, they exist simultaneously within two worlds, that of the Spirit and that of the Flesh, that these individuals always seem to be looking for the answer to all of their questions, and ultimately, a sense of `connection.
Yet the true thirst for connection comes from the Soul of Crow desiring to re-connect with all that was once known, yet lost when the Soul is cast upon the blank shores of forgetfulness that is Physical Life. He/she seeks to connect all that which was known, is now known, and will one day be known, thus perhaps receiving the Answers to all of the Questions which fill their active and pondering minds.
When one with Power Totem Crow comes to realize that he/she is already connected to that vast repository of Universal Knowledge and that the Earth Walk is the “schoolroom” of that great university, then, the process of transformation begins. This leads him/her to the discovery that one is never truly disconnected in the first place, merely walking on a different level, plane or experience than some of the other two-leggeds.
Once this realization has been made, then Crow Soul will begin to Shapeshift from the bindings of the past, which have dictated that there must be something “wrong” with his/her way of experiencing, feeling or viewing Life, and can instead, come to Accept, Celebrate and Love the Self. This is when the integrated human (mind)/crow (soul) may truly fly free.

Smudging Without Smoke
This is without a doubt one of the things we’ve been asked most often over the years. So many times, so many frustrated people, so many instances of “I really need to sage, but…”
Let’s face it, there are many reasons why you might not want smoke in your house/business/vicinity. Maybe you have a new baby, a sensitive pet, or a family member with a health risk like asthma or COPD. Or you might own a business or work in a place where it would not be practical or appropriate to burn things. Whatever reasons you have are valid. And there are solutions, we just need to apply a little creativity.
The following is just a sampling of methods that we like to use or suggest in situations where smudging is needed but smoke is unwanted. You’ll notice that each suggestion is labeled with an element or elements. There’s just something about more unusual methods, these magical workarounds, that seem to work best when the practitioner has an affinity with one of the replacement elements. Oh, and, just because we say “sage” in each of these suggestions doesn’t mean you can’t use a blend, if that’s your thing.
The No-brainer – Literally smudge as normal, but without lighting the sage. This is purely metaphysical, easier for someone with a very cerebral mindset. (Air)
Simple Spray – Essential oils + water or vodka. Mix in a spray bottle or bowl, then spray or flick with the tips of your fingers. (Air or Water)
Sage Tincture – Place a handful of sage in 16 oz. of vodka and let steep in a cool dry place for approximately two weeks. Use to spray or anoint surfaces. (Earth or Air)
“Tea” – Pour boiling water over an small amount of sage. While hot, waft the steam as you would smoke. May be cooled and used as a spray as well. (Air or Water)
Repurposed Wax Burner – This is a method that works particularly well in a business or office setting, or anytime you might want a longer or ongoing smudging session. Take a clean wax burner (either electric or candle), and place a large pinch of sage into the bowl. Cover with a small amount of water (no more than half full). Make sure the burner is somewhere that you can keep an eye on it, and continue adding more water as the liquid evaporates. (Water or Fire)
Infused Candles – A great choice for anyone who really feels the need to still burn something, or has trouble connecting with the other (above) methods. You can “steep” your candles. Simply place loose sage in a (preferably wooden) box, nestle the candles down into that, and cover. Let sit at least one week, or better yet, just keep a few stored that way all of the time. This works especially well if used in conjunction with our spell to clear the air. (Fire or Earth)
Do any of these methods work exactly the same as traditional smudging?
But why do they have to?
Just as we are all different, we often have at least slightly different ways of accomplishing the same tasks, of getting to the same places. And why should this be any different? Magic, witchery, spirituality, these things are so personal…why would they not also be personalized?

A Great Teacher
By Madisyn Taylor
Water is a great teacher that shows us how to move through the world with grace, ease, determination, and humility.
The journey of water as it flows upon the earth can be a mirror of our own paths through life. Water begins its residence on earth as it falls from the sky or melts from ice and streams down a mountain into a tributary or stream. In the same way, we come into the world and begin our lives on earth. Like a river that flows within the confines of its banks, we are born with certain defining characteristics that govern our identity. We are born in a specific time and place, within a specific family, and with certain gifts and challenges. Within these parameters, we move through life, encountering many twists, turns, and obstacles along the way just as a river flows.
Water is a great teacher that shows us how to move through the world with grace, ease, determination, and humility. When a river breaks at a waterfall, it gains energy and moves on, as we encounter our own waterfalls, we may fall hard but we always keep moving on. Water can inspire us to not become rigid with fear or cling to what’s familiar. Water is brave and does not waste time clinging to its past, but flows onward without looking back. At the same time, when there is a hole to be filled, water does not run away from it in fear of the dark; instead, water humbly and bravely fills the empty space. In the same way, we can face the dark moments of our life rather than run away from them.
Eventually, a river will empty into the sea. Water does not hold back from joining with a larger body, nor does it fear a loss of identity or control. It gracefully and humbly tumbles into the vastness by contributing its energy and merging without resistance. Each time we move beyond our individual egos to become part of something bigger, we can try our best to follow the lead of the river.
