Freyja’s Fehu Spell
Spell Date: Sunday, April 23, 2017

The first of the Nordic runes is Freyja’s. It is often transliterated as Fehu ( f), and its sound is the letter f. Practice making that sound in the cave of your mouth. Notice your lips, the vibration, where your tongue is, and how your mouth feels when you conjure the sound.

Freyja is a goddess of fertility, magic, and oracular seership and a member of the Vanir tribe. She is sister to Freyr and the daughter of Njord.

Go into a garden, whether it is at your home or a friend’s or in the center of the city. Begin to trace with your projective (or power) hand the Fehu rune in the air. Make the f sound and wordlessly call upon Freyja to come and bless the garden with her powers of fertility and magic. Make a shrine for her in the garden to seal the spell.

A Grass Spell
Spell Date: Saturday, April 22, 2017

Grasses help purify the air we breathe and they help our planet. Earth Day is a good day to perform this spell. Start by mixing a handful of grass seed with some garden soil in a clean pail or other container. Go to a wooded area near a stream or river. Bless the seed and soil by raising the pail toward the sky, then set it on the ground. Hold your hands above the seed and soil and say:

“Thank you, noble grass, for helping Mother Earth and all living creatures.”

Now sprinkle a bit of the grass seed mixture into the stream or river, carrying your blessing to the world. Next, sprinkle some of the seed/soil mixture on the ground as a thank-you to the earth. Lastly, save a small amount of the seed and soil for yourself to use in abundance and healing spells.

Child Activists
Spell Date: Friday, April 21, 2017

Today is a national holiday in Indonesia celebrating the birthday in 1879 of feminist princess Raden Adjeng Kartini, who brought reform to the school system, enabling girls and women to venture outside the home and receive an education.

Today, bless the child activists, past and present, who speak out against oppression and inequity. They push boundaries, bringing a greater quality of life to the forefront for all children. While thinking about child activists such as Malala Yousafzai (an outspoken Pakistani advocate for children’s rights and female education) and Canadians Craig and Marc Kielburger (who founded Free the Children, We Day, and the Me to We movement), light a candle and bless them:

“Child activists, strong and free, they stand up to inequity. They have brave and insistent voices, and insist on liberty and choices. They’re like this candle, bringing light. I bless them in their daily fight. Bless the child activists.”

Seasonal Preparation
Spell Date: Thursday, April 20, 2017

Seasons are changing and the time is right for planning. How do you wish your yard or garden to look? Is this the year you will make many changes, a few changes, or no change at all?

Begin with a spring clean-up. Rake, mow, and bag those last leaves from the fall and winter. Turn the soil and apply the fertilizer. Be gentle around those daffodils and hyacinths. When all is cleared, take a good, long look and map out where any new plants or flowers will be. Perhaps you are planting a tree this year.

Just as we humans like to be touched, so does the earth. Talk to the earth as you work, sending appreciation for the anticipated new growth. Your love and devotion will be returned. Say:

“Mother Nature, Lady Gaia, Bless the soil under my care.
My gratitude for your beauty Is never-ending.”

Block-Busting Spell
Spell Date: Wednesday, April 19, 2017

Sometimes we just need to grab a hammer and go to town on whatever it is that we find standing between us and the end of our desire. For this spell, you will need a hammer, orange ribbon, and a small piece of brick about the size of your palm.

Ground and center your energy, then hold the piece of brick in your hand and channel your feelings surrounding the block into it. Wrap the brick with the orange ribbon liberally so that there are no exposed edges and say:

I wrap this block because I’m in control. I wrap it because I’m more powerful!

Now hit the brick three times with the hammer, breaking it into pieces, and say:

“I smash you because I’m done and I do it because I’ve won. Be gone, you’re banished. I haven’t a care under the sun!”

Throw the remains in the trash.

Clinch Knot Fortunes
Spell Date: Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Raid the ol’ fishing tackle box or procure a fishing hook, lures, line, and weights from a local tackle shop. The size and weight of the gear chosen should pertain to your intended “catch.” Creek and stream fishing lures work best for moderate money amounts; lake and tributary lures help to manifest commodity items or income; and ocean hooks with heavy line lures draw in big ticket goals like vehicle, property, or educational expenses.

Cut seven feet of fishing line. Pass one end of the line through the eye of the hook twice, leaving a seven-inch slack. Hold both the longstanding and short-slack lines parallel between two fingers. Wrap the slack line around the standing line seven times, chanting:

“Our Lady of Life fulfills us.”

Lastly, pass the line through the first loop and then between the slack line itself and the standing line. Pull the slack line until the loops constrict uniformly along the standing line and rest flush above the eye of the hook. Thread your fish hook with cash, accreditation paperwork, or an item that is symbolic of your goals. To finish, weave, weight, or bind up the excess line into small, uniform loops before hanging this charm in a doorway or window to lure in your prized catch.

Cleansing Spell
Spell Date: Monday, April 17, 2017

Water is an element of cleansing and purification. When the rain falls, it washes the air and the trees, making the world clean. Muddy water flows into creeks, where dirt settles along banks. Water evaporates from rivers and lakes, rising into the sky. So the clouds form fresh and pure, to shed the rain again.

Energy cycles much the same way. We gather it into magical artifacts to use in spellcraft. It can pick up negativity along the way. A good way to clean crystals, pentacles, and other durable magical items is to set them out in the rain for a few minutes. If it’s not raining, you can use collected rainwater to rinse things, or sprinkle them with water. As you do so, say:

“Spirit of water, spirit of rains, Clean up this magic, wash away stains.
Everything pure and everything clean, All freshened up, ready to be seen.”

Heartwings Love Notes 773 April Showers and May Flowers

Heartwings says, “Gardening is an occupation that can be practiced in many ways.”

The forsythia is blooming. Its golden flowers brighten the landscape and provide a kind of sunshine even during April showers. Gardening is present in the thoughts of those who do and in the stores as well. Pansies and other colorful flowers decorate the entrances of supermarkets and other stores that sell them. Gardening supplies are piled up ready to purchase. Even though it’s not yet time to be planting, these and other signs of spring hearten those of us who are weary of winter’s drab browns and blacks, bare limbs and withered weeds.

Gardening runs in my family and in my blood. I wish I could yet I can’t claim the green thumb of my ancestors. My great grandfather planted an orchard of flourishing fruit trees. His apple trees blossomed and bore from the onset of spring until deep into fall. His quince trees produced fuzzy hard fruit that with my mother’s diligent efforts became jelly and preserves. In her garden she grew a variety of vegetables. I can see her still working away in it, her tanned back brown in the sun.

My father too grew roses and later brought back very young peach and plum trees from a horticultural show, planted them and then harvested the fruit when they grew old enough to produce it. I did have one experience with a fruit tree. Back when I had my spiral garden I had bought what I thought was a white forsythia to plant there. After three years it hadn’t flowered. Reluctant to discard it, I dug it up, replanted it at the edge and forgot about it. To my great surprise and delight, though now in the shadow of a large spruce, it grew into a white peach tree that produced three peaches its first year and many more after that.

These days my gardening is limited to a few potted plants. Perhaps one day I will have a small garden again, however I couldn’t manage anything very much more than the original three by five foot plot I was given as a child for my own. I grew flowers there, and then weeds by the time August rolled around. But it got me started on many years of garden tending. These days I write poetry about gardens together with other aspects of nature and the world I live in. My gardens have become metaphysical rather than physical, and truth to tell my back is grateful.

As the days grow warmer may you enjoy whatever gardening you do.

Blessings and Best regards, Tasha Halpert

PS Please write and tell me about your gardens, I love to hear from readers and promise to write you back as soon as I am able.

Domestic Tranquility A Cup of Tea

It was wonderful having Tasha back home after her weekend meditation retreat with her daughter in upstate New York. She was in the bedroom unpacking when she asked, “Did you happen to see the box of imported bitter lemon lozenges I bought before I left? I left them on my desk. They were a special birthday gift for a dear friend.”

I frowned. “I’ll have to replace them.”

“They’re expensive and somewhat hard to find. The apothecary in Cambridge doesn’t always stock them.”

“I’ll call the first thing Monday. I’m sorry but at least they went to a good cause.”
“I’m surprised. You don’t even like bitter lemon.”

I nodded and helped her fit her carryon bag into the closet. “I thought they’d do the trick but they only made matters worse.”

She looked at me. “Made what worse?”

“The tea.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I had thought they would add flavor to the flat tasting pot of tea I made for myself. Whoever said that to boil water was easy didn’t know much about cooking.”

” I just hope I can get another tin.”

“Especially when it didn’t work. The entire pot changed from overly tepid to varnish-like bitter.”

” What did you expect?”

“The same effect as putting a slice of lemon in a cup of tea. It picks it up without messing up the taste.”

She sighed. “Why don’t you start from the beginning?”

“I finally managed to get the water to boil. It took a while but I was watching the pot and that no doubt made it take longer.” She turned and I followed her into the kitchen. “Once it finally boiled I added two level teaspoons of tea to the kettle just like you do.”

“I’ve never put the tea into the kettle. I always use a tea pot.”

“I know that but it looked so clean I didn’t want to muddy it up and have to wash it. I went straight to the source. But my plan didn’t work.”

I took two cups from the cupboard. Surprisingly, the kettle was already boiling.

“I can’t imagine what it must have tasted like.”

“One could cultivate the taste and eliminate the need for a tea pot. It did have a sort of tannic flavor.”

“That’s why I use a teapot with a tea basket inside.”

Beltane Faerie Cakes with Candied Violets

Spending Beltane in the kitchen this year? Make it magical with these charming little faerie cakes.

Whimsical yet elegant, candied violets make a striking addition to love spells, wishing magic and faerie rituals.

Use candied violets in faerie cakes for a spring ritual, a “dressed up” cakes and ale or to serve at any spring gathering — especially Beltane!

The best part is, they’re practically free! If you’re in the Eastern US and you haven’t put down pesticide this year on your lawn, there’s a good chance your yard or a nearby one has wild violets in abundance.

Go spend some time outdoors, bring a basket and gather those little beauties up for a Beltane with a splash of purple.

Gather a clean, washed, dry paintbrush with a fine tip, an egg white, and some sugar.

Start by gently washing the violet blooms. A spray bottle and a strainer work well for this, but be careful! Even for flowers, wild violets are delicate!

Allow them to dry on a paper towel.

Dip the paintbrush in egg whites, and paint each blossom.

Then sprinkle sugar on the violets. Most recipes call for powdered sugar, but I use granulated because it reminds me of late frost.

Finally, bake some cupcakes!

Any vanilla cupcake recipe will do, but make it from scratch. The more you put into your ritual food, the more “fragrant” the magic of it. Be connected to the process.

Bonus points for making the vanilla extract yourself. Vanilla inspires passion in kitchen spells. Here, we use it to wink and nod at Beltane’s celebration of “spring romance.”

Pipe on some cream cheese frosting and arrange violets in tiny “bouquets.”

Serve and enjoy!

A Call to Action
By Madisyn Taylor

Those on the other side of the veil want to be put to good use and help you.
Each of us, whether we realize it or not, moves through life in the company of beings whose task is to watch over us. These ancestors, spirit guides, angels, guardians, and ascended masters designated to serve as protectors and guides take pleasure in their roles yet cannot assist us without first being asked. Since the origins of our sacred sentinels differ, we may choose whom we call upon for help based on the situation at hand. However, in certain circumstances, particularly those in which time is of the essence or there is the potential for harm, we may feel the need to surround ourselves with our entire complement of benevolent, watchful guardians at a moment’s notice. To do so, a great shortcut is to create and assemble a light team–a group of spirit helpers who will come to our aid when we utter a simple word or phrase.

The creation of a light team begins with the dedication of the words that will serve as a shortcut in your time of distress, signaling to your sentinels that you are requesting their support. Meditation, at an altar or otherwise, can help you attract their attention, affording you an opportunity to articulate your desire that they work in tandem in certain instances. Creating a short ceremony in which you surround yourself with objects you associate with the helpers you wish to assign to your light team can ensure that those beings are in attendance as you designate your shortcut. Creating this shortcut is simply a tool. You can employ “light team” as your rallying cry or any other words you feel comfortable using. The numerous guides and guardians that see to your welfare will accept your choice gladly and respond instantaneously when called.

Your light team will be there to assist you in those dangerous, chaotic, or confounding moments when you don’t have the time, energy, or opportunity to center yourself and meditate on individual sentinels. You can also call upon them when seeking guidance that originates from a variety of perspectives. Whether the support they provide comes in the form of guidance or wisdom, their combined presence will give you a sense of security that strengthens you and reminds you that you are never alone.
