Rise and Shine Oil for the Fighting Fit
Spell Date: Saturday, February 25, 2017

Some mornings it helps to have a bit of get-up-and-go. This oil is just the trick to ease a sore back or neck, and it also relieves joint tension when used for topical pain relief. Into one cup of liquid coconut oil, add the following pure essential oils:

* 3 drops camphor oil
* 5 drops tea tree oil
* 9 drops angelica oil
* 7 drops blue tansy oil
* 3 drops heather oil

Cover with an airtight lid and shake vigorously for thirty seconds. As you do so, imagine the spritely jigs and athletic rigors of your day, each magically being met with grace and ease. Apply the oil liberally to unbroken skin and massage in well. Avoid contact with the eyes and do not use on open cuts or wounds. For best results, store your Fighting Fit oil in the fridge and shake it vigorously before each use.

Winter’s Reflection
Spell Date: Friday, February 24, 2017

The trees are bare. The moon casts an icy glow upon frozen landscapes. Nature has fallen into a deep sleep and nothing will stir her.

Those who dare to venture out do so quickly. Even animals appear only briefly, then return hastily to the warmth of their dens.

Yet in the stillness and quiet, we know magick stirs. Deep below the surface, life is quickening, sensing rebirth, no matter how far away it may seem.

For this spell, you will need a white candle, a quartz crystal, and a mirror.

Set the candle and crystal before the mirror. Light the candle. Hold the crystal before the candle. Allow your gaze to become soft.

As the flame reflects within the crystal, say:

“Mirror bright, Winter’s night, Crystal quartz, I see your light. Within, without, light shines on me. All I see is heavenly.”

Make Your Bed
Spell Date: Thursday, February 23, 2017

Life is hectic, and it may seem like there is not enough time each morning to accomplish all you need to do before you set off for work or school or jump into your daily activities. Time may not allow for you to light a candle or stick of incense and perform a complex morning ritual or blessing. However, there is one little thing you can do that will bookend your day with self-care: make your bed.

Straighten up your sleeping room. This seemingly small act of housekeeping does wonders. Air and smooth the sheets, place decorative pillows, and open the curtains. Off you go, and what awaits you at the end of the day when you are ready to tumble into that bed? A lovely, soothing, inviting, uncluttered place to rest your body. Care for your bed and it will care for you.

Healing Spell with Quan Yin
Spell Date: Wednesday, February 22, 2017

In my father’s Balinese family, Quan Yin is a deity who is venerated. She is known throughout the world as a being of deep compassion and mercy. She is also known to have originated from the mysterious bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. I have found that Quan Yin is a being who desires to be accessed by all. Go to her with respect and sincere intention and she will come to you.

Obtain an image of Quan Yin and burn jasmine or rose incense before it. Enter a state of meditation and sing the following mantra, which is dedicated to Quan Yin. As you do so, hold your intention for healing in your heart. Find a reputable source online so you can hear the mantra chanted and learn how to pronounce the words correctly:

“Om mani padme hum.”

Dark Chocolate Cayenne Truffles
Spell Date: Tuesday, February 21, 2017

Spice up the passion in your relationship with this special chocolate treat. Add in the magical intent with each ingredient for a truly special candy. If you like your food only a little spicy, add half the cayenne. And if you don’t like the kick at all, leave it out. You will need:

* 8 ounces dark chocolate, roughly chopped
* 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
* 1/4 cup powdered sugar
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 1 teaspoon ground cayenne
* 1/8 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
* 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

In a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan, heat the dark chocolate and cream on a medium to low heat, whisking until the chocolate is melted and the two are well mixed. Remove from heat and add the sugar, vanilla, and cayenne, whisking again until combined. Transfer to a small bowl and refrigerate for two hours to allow it to set up and make it cool enough to handle.

In a small bowl, combine the dark chocolate cocoa powder and cinnamon. When the ganache is done cooling, roll the mixture into balls of about a tablespoon each, then roll the small balls in the cocoa/cinnamon mixture. Place on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Store in the fridge until set. Keep refrigerated in a small, covered container.

Heartwings Love Notes 675: A Lenten Discipline Can Be More Than Fasting

Heartwings says, “The six weeks before Easter are a chance to practice some self discipline.”

Regardless of one’s spiritual orientation, self-discipline can be helpful to one’s personal growth. In the days before supermarkets or even grocery stores, for people in spiritual or religious communities or congregations to find enough to eat in the latter months of winter could be difficult especially in the six weeks before Easter. The Christian religious institutions of the day dedicated this time, known to Christians as Lent to the spiritual practice of fasting. From a practical standpoint, this extended what supplies remained. It also provided a spiritual bonus to do so. Making a virtue of necessity, the Lenten observances of the past centuries helped individuals get through the scarcity of food.

When I was growing up of course food was abundant. I was taught that the way to fulfill Lenten obligations was to give up something I might enjoy eating. I was told that fasting wasn’t just about going without a meal or not eating meat; it could mean giving up chocolate, or ice cream or sweets in general as a discipline instead of not eating meat on certain days or whatever else might be considered appropriate. However my great aunt Alice had a different approach. She believed in taking on rather than giving up something during Lent. Being a giving member of the community she would assume extra volunteer work or make a special effort at that time to visit elderly or invalid family members or friends.

I have come to believe that my Great Aunt’s idea of a good Lenten discipline is more meaningful as a spiritual practice than giving up desserts or candy. However, I am not one to visit the sick, nor am I involved in any community activities of a volunteer nature. Instead I believe that for me to fulfill the spirit of this period I need to enhance my focus on gratitude and giving. I can become more mindful of my blessings, spend more time acknowledging with gratitude the kindness of friends and family, and be more aware of whatever opportunities may present themselves for me to be kind and thoughtful to others.

Self-discipline can consist of an act of rigorous denial or of observing and then acting as might be appropriate. One can lead a spiritual life whether or not one has taken vows or lives within a specific religious or spiritual setting. If my Lenten practice becomes a habit or enhances my ability to be more mindful, that will do me more good than giving up candy. In the process it may also help me to be more aware of when I can do someone a kindness. By prioritizing these attitudes in my everyday life, I can enact a Lenten discipline that will do more good in general than simply fasting from anything I might enjoy eating.

May you discover ways to enhance your spiritual life during Lent.
Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert

Domestic Tranquility: Soft Shoes

It was just after noon on Saturday and we were on our way out to the exquisite buffet lunch at Bauhinia when suddenly Tasha turned and looked down at my shoes. “You’re wearing bedroom slippers!”
“Au contraire.” I smiled. “These are soft shoes. There’s a considerable difference.”
She looked at them carefully. “They look like bedroom slippers to me. Why they even have sheepskin linings.”
I really didn’t want to go change my shoes. These were comfortable and we hadn’t planned on taking a ten mile hike. “Bedroom slippers have ultra thin soles and would wear out quickly if worn outside. These, on the other hand, provide better support plus a stronger sole that can endure sidewalks.”
She frowned as she backed out of the driveway. We turned onto Route 122. “Elderly men wear bedroom slippers out.” She said ignoring me.
“Furthermore I bought them in the Shoe Department not the Slipper Department. That alone should say a lot.”
“But they don’t have slipper departments,” she said firmly. “In all stores bedroom slippers are sold alongside shoes. How would you feel if I went out to lunch wearing my slippers?”
“You mean those pink things you wear to flop about the apartment?
“If that’s what you want to call them!” She smiled at me and nodded. “See, you wouldn’t like it at all.”
I looked down at my feet. “But these are fashionable. You see them advertised in European men’s magazines. Besides if whatever you wore were comfortable and you liked them, then what difference would it make?”
“A very big difference to how I would feel.”
“I’ve never understood women’s shoes, except to think that they seem over priced. At least you don’t wear six inch spike heels with weird straps.” We stopped for a light. Even though it felt chilly to me, kids were out wearing tee shirts and shorts.
“Psychologically they make a very big difference.” She persevered “I think one’s mental state is strongly influenced by what sort of shoes they’re wearing.”
“So you think I’m running the risk of becoming lackadaisical and ready to go to bed just because I’m wearing soft shoes?”
“No, but I do think wearing them might encourage other aspects of elderly behavior.” She put a lot of emphasis on the word elderly. “Who do you know who rides around town in bedroom slippers?”
I cleared my throat. The trees were budding, ah the allergy season! “Ernest Hemingway for one. When he wasn’t tramping about the globe in combat boots he’d wear elegant soft shoes made especially for him by some cobbler in Spain. Actually I got this idea from him.”
She turned and raised her eyebrows. “Hemingway wore bedroom slippers when he’d walk around Key West?”
“Please Tasha, try to understand that these aren’t bedroom slippers. What you must recognize is that there’s been a revolution in men’s footwear. These are soft, comfy shoes. They are a sign of elegance and sophistication. No doubt that first time he met Marlene Dietrich, Papa Hemingway was wearing swanky soft shoes and it was his signature choice in casual footwear that influenced her attraction to him.”
“Humph, and I suppose they had sheepskin linings?”
“Their letters to one another will soon be available by appointment at the Kennedy Library. He’d call her ‘my little kraut.’ And apparently there might have been some even more suggestive, torrid paragraphs.”
She sighed. “And I suppose you’ll wear them when you’re writing? Maybe as a way to invite the spirit of Hemingway to help you past split infinitives and run on sentences?”
“Good idea! I’ll have to try that. Usually I wear more traditional shoes when I’m writing, everyday less fashionable shoes that are more adaptable to the workplace.”
She drove into the parking lot and pulled up close to the door of the restaurant. Then she turned to me and giggled. “Since when do you try to conform to workplace dress standards?”
“I don’t.” I assured her. “But word processing especially requires tremendous foot support so that my ideas might flow more smoothly. Were I wearing these Hemingway sorts of soles I might start thinking of how wonderful it would be having Marline Dietrich as an intimate pen pal.” I opened the car door and stepped out.
Her smile was mischievous. “Didn’t Hemingway usually stand up while he was typing? And wouldn’t standing that way require better foot support? In which case maybe he reserved his bedroom slippers for more casual relaxing times.” Tasha got out and we headed for the restaurant.
It was early. We headed toward our favorite booth waiting for us by the window. The buffet hadn’t opened yet. “Please stop calling them bedroom slippers and recognize them simply as casual European foot attire. And I’m really sorry that men’s soft shoes are more fashionable than those things women wear when they pad about the house.”
At that moment I wasn’t thinking of what was on my feet but rather whether I’d go for sushi, or egg rolls and hot and sour soup.
She looked me over the menu. “We do have our differences of opinion. Now, how would you feel if the next time we go out to eat I wear my bathrobe and slippers?”
A server brought us glasses of water and departed.
I smiled. “Only if it was a silk negligee and the sort of sexy slippers Marlene might have worn.”
“Oh no,” she said. “She wore flat ballet shoes. I’m talking about my everyday fuzzy pink flops that are in the bedroom.”
“In which case I’d start thinking of you as my little kraut.”

True compassion recognizes that all the boundaries we perceive between ourselves and others are an illusion.

Compassion is the ability to see the deep connectedness between ourselves and others. Moreover, true compassion recognizes that all the boundaries we perceive between ourselves and others are an illusion. When we first begin to practice compassion, this very deep level of understanding may elude us, but we can have faith that if we start where we are, we will eventually feel our way toward it. We move closer to it every time we see past our own self-concern to accommodate concern for others. And, as with any skill, our compassion grows most in the presence of difficulty.

We practice small acts of compassion every day, when our loved ones are short-tempered or another driver cuts us off in traffic. We extend our forgiveness by trying to understand their point of view; we know how it is to feel stressed out or irritable. The practice of compassion becomes more difficult when we find ourselves unable to understand the actions of the person who offends us. These are the situations that ask us to look more deeply into ourselves, into parts of our psyches that we may want to deny, parts that we have repressed because society has labeled them bad or wrong. For example, acts of violence are often well beyond anything we ourselves have perpetuated, so when we are on the receiving end of such acts, we are often at a loss. This is where the real potential for growth begins, because we are called to shine a light inside ourselves and take responsibility for what we have disowned. It is at this juncture that we have the opportunity to transform from with! in.

This can seem like a very tall order, but when life presents us with circumstances that require our compassion, no matter how difficult, we can trust that we are ready. We can call upon all the light we have cultivated so far, allowing it to lead the way into the darkest parts of our own hearts, connecting us to the hearts of others in the understanding that is true compassion.

Color Therapy

Often the colors we like best are the colors we most need in our lives and provide us with subtle vibrational help.

The wondrous displays of color that define the world around us are manifestations of light and, as such, each possesses a unique frequency. The attraction we feel to certain colors is not a matter of pure chance; we experience the beneficial affects of color even while blindfolded. We are naturally drawn to those colors that lift our mood, expand consciousness, and restore health. Color therapy, also known as chromo therapy, allows us to harness the power of individual color frequencies to heal the body, positively influence our emotions, and achieve a renewed sense of inner harmony through sympathetic resonance. Colors do not directly affect the composition of our physical, mental, or aura, but they noninvasively alter the vibrational characteristics of diverse elements of the self so that each resonates at its proper healthy frequency.

It is easy to overlook the colors that saturate our personal and professional environments. Yet these, whether in the form of the paint on our walls or the clothing we wear, can influence our thoughts, behaviors, and feelings to an extraordinary degree. The colors we like best are often those that we need most in our lives, and there are many ways we can utilize them. Basking under a colored lightbulb or gazing at an area of color can stimulate or calm us depending on the color we choose. For example, red stimulates the brain, circulatory systems, and first chakra, giving us an energy boost, while blue acts on the throat chakra, soothing the body and mind. And when we do not feel drawn to any one color, we can still benefit from the healing effects of white light, which is an amalgamation of all the colors of the visible spectrum. It is a cleansing color, one that can purify us on many levels.

Human beings evolved to delight in vivid sunsets and rainbows, to enjoy the sensations awakened by particularly eye-catching color, and to decorate our spaces and ourselves with bright colors. In essence, we evolved to love the light because of its harmonizing influence on every aspect of the self. When we pay attention to the potential affects of individual colors, we can modify our spaces, wardrobes, and habits to ensure that we introduce the colors that speak to us most deeply in our everyday lives.
