Long Life
Spell Date: Sunday, February 5, 2017

Here is a spell to promote longevity and ward off illness.

Use a stone associated with longevity, such as agate, jade, a fossil, or petrified wood.

Dip the stone into saltwater, saying:

“I consecrate this stone of long life by water and earth. Long life, fill this sacred stone!”

Pass the stone through sage smoke, saying:

“I consecrate this stone of long life by fire and air. Long life, fill this sacred stone!”

Touch the stone to the top of your head, saying:

“Long life, fill my head!”

Then touch and fill your heart, hands, and feet.

Now place the stone anywhere on your body that disease runs in your family—for example, the breasts for breast cancer—saying:

“Sacred stone, protect me and keep me well.”

Do as many areas of the body as necessary.

Keep the stone on your altar. You can renew this spell periodically, always during a full or waxing moon.

Start Your Day the Healthy Way
Spell Date: Saturday, February 4, 2017

Some of us manage to stay healthy by eating our veggies. The rest of us would like to eat better. Really, we would! But with our busy schedules, it’s hard to do more than invade the lunchroom at work (donuts, bagels, yummy!) and grab a fast-food lunch. And supper? In the car or in front of the TV, do we ever pay attention to what we’re putting in our bodies?

Like Mother always said, “Take your vitamins.” Here’s an invocation to utter as you’re swallowing that handful of health-giving supplements:

“Jolly vitamins A, B, C, Helpful D and all the rest, Probiotics, min’rals, supplements, Let’s start my day the healthiest. Daily multi, you go down with Coke or water Or something just a little stronger. No more cold pizza, nothing fraughter. Help me live happier and longer!”

Warm Heart
Spell Date: Friday, February 3, 2017

It’s easy to become crabby with people if you are stuck in the house together. In truth, relationships can be tough no matter what the season. This is a simple spell to help you remember to be kind and patient, both with others and with yourself. If you want, you can light a red or pink candle while you say this spell:

“Goddess, fill me with kindness. Help me to be patient and loving And to remember always To keep your warmth of spirit in my heart And to share it with others.”

Into the Light
Spell Date: Thursday, February 2, 2017

At Imbolc, we are “in the belly” of the mother, and like little seeds under the soil, we are quickening with ideas and inspiration. Halfway between solstice and equinox, it’s a good time to invoke faith, hope, and sunshine using a creativity spell. You’ll need a couple magazines, scissors, a glue stick, a paper to stick stuff on, and your imagination. Close your eyes and envision the sun, glorious, bright, and radiant. Let your faith conjure up radiance. Feel hope grow. Now open your eyes and get to work, pulling images and words from the magazines that resonate with your vision. Trim them and create a collage honoring Brighid. Place it on your altar and light a candle. Say:

“Brighid, bless these simple seeds, planted deep inside of me. Let them sprout with growing light and grow my future safe and bright. So mote it be.”

An Abundance Spell
Spell Date: Wednesday, February 1, 2017

In the Eastern Orthodox Church, today is the feast day of St. Tryphon (Trypho). He’s the protector of gardeners, fields, and vineyards. St. Tryphon not only protects gardens and crops but is also prayed to for growth and abundance. This celebration is linked to the ancient Greek god Dionysus, god of wine and fertility.

To help bring abundance into your life, rise just before dawn, face east, and say three things that you’re grateful for. Then state three wishes you want to come true. Later sometime this evening, drape your altar with a green cloth and upon it place a glass of red wine and a new houseplant. Thank the Divine Power for all that you have and drink the wine. Tend the houseplant with great care and watch your abundance grow.

Theft Protection Spell
Spell Date: Tuesday, January 31, 2017

Without a doubt, you have given or gotten some fancy new things over the holidays and might be concerned about them taking a walk on their own when you aren’t looking. Let’s face it: if something were to happen to that new phone or MP3 player, your heart would be crushed!

To protect an item from theft, burn equal parts clove, patchouli, and peppermint leaf over a charcoal in a fire-safe dish, and either pass the item through the aromatic smoke or gently fan the smoke over the item. While doing so, say the following spell:

“Wall of thunder, cracked like a whip, protect my things from taking a trip! Unless I will it, they be mine, guard them from thieves both mundane and divine. Wall of protection, I summon you high, by clove and smoke no thief will try! This is my will, and so shall it be, for the good of all but mostly for me!”

Dreamtime Courage
Spell Date: Monday, January 30, 2017

Here is a spell to thwart the shadows of the dream world. Just before bed, gather three glasses of water, three pennies, and three sugar cubes. Place the glasses in a row under the center of your bed, then drop in the pennies and finally add in the sugar cubes. Crawl into bed, and as you drift off to sleep, recite the following rhyme:

“Pennies three, sweetened for me, cast a refractive security.”

If the spell was successful, a series of safe dreams will prove the affirmation. The glasses will keep for up to three nights and provide the astral body with a shield for the dream world. To help redirect the flow of your body energy as you sleep, true copper pennies minted before 1982 will work best. Avoid our modern copper-plated zinc imposters, as, sadly, not all pennies are lucky these days.

Heartwings Love Notes 762: A Valentine to Lost Loves

Heartwings says, “The remembrance of lost loves can enhance their shine.”

When I was eight years old my dear nurse, Emily left to get married. She had taken care of me since I was around eighteen months of age and was in most respects my second mother. She was a practical nurse. That meant besides looking after me, she helped with household chores as well as driving me where I might need to go. She was a devoted caretaker and when she left I missed her sorely. While my own mother loved me dearly, she loved me in her own way. Unlike Emily she was not a physically affectionate person. Also she had much higher expectations of me than Emily did.

When I was twelve, my friend and classmate Sally went away to boarding school. A bookish, unathletic, somewhat plump child, I had no interest in the things my classmates did, and neither did she. As a result from the third to the seventh grade we formed a team of two, and I defended her from the bullies that taunted her for her shyness. I missed her sadly. She lived in a big house by the ocean and our idyllic summers were spent swimming and playing tennis in her private court. Her freezer always held a tub of ice cream and we could make cones when we wanted. When we reached sixteen and I began dating, despite my efforts to remain close, we drifted apart. She had been my best and only friend. She remained distant.

Once I was married and had children I became friends with woman whose two boys were around the age of my two girls. We all went everywhere together. She had a wonderful voice and we used to sing folk songs at our children’s school. We even performed in a contest. Very close, we spoke on the phone almost daily. Then for some reason she became angry with me and disappeared from my life. For months I was devastated. Later on I had another friend I went to the beach with each day. Sadly, after several years she went back to Germany and never returned. By then I was beginning to learn what it was to lose someone I loved, and how to handle it; I was able to recover faster.

Throughout my long life I have had many opportunities to learn to live with loss. I had to come to terms with son’s death when he was twenty-eight, and as I grew older, my parents passing. More lately have come the deaths of others I loved. As time has gone on, these experiences have helped me learn to let loved ones go with a more peaceful heart. I have discovered that I do not need to stop thinking about them, nor do I need to regret their absence. I can take the images of them together with the memories of our time together and put them lovingly in a special album I keep in my heart. Then when I wish to I can open it, turn the pages and smile as I remember with joy the good times we had and the love we shared.

May you find ways to cope with your losses and to turn them into opportunities to focus on the happy memories.

Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

Please feel free to share your experiences as well as your comments with me. I do so love to hear from readers.

Stephen Halpert
Domestic Tranquility: My Grandmother’s Plunger

We were at the flea market in Grafton, walking amongst tables cluttered with everything from old glasses and china to basketballs and battered tennis racquets, all at give away prices.

I paused at a table littered with strange looking rusty pipes, old tools and different kinds of racks. “Will you look at that? And it’s only seventy five cents!”

Tasha frowned. “Stephen, that’s just an old rubber plunger.”

“Exactly like my grandmother had in her upstairs bathroom closet on Oriole Avenue; same chipped red paint on its top too. Why if she hadn’t lived as far away as Providence, I’d say this well might once have been hers. And what a good deal!”

She poked at it and wrinkled her nose. “It’s old and decrepit and the rubber is dried out and cracked.”

“Tasha, if you were as old as this plunger…why I’ll bet it goes back seventy, eighty years to the last century. I’ll bet Eleanor Roosevelt had a red handled plunger just like this at Hyde Park; probably brought it with her to the White House to make the place more homey. Don’t you realize what a nostalgic American keepsake the classic bathroom plunger has become?”

“No doubt it will prove useful to someone,” she said. She turned her attention to a pile of old food stained cookbooks on the next table.

“Might be smart if we picked it up,” I persisted. “Real practical, antique rustic Americana.”

She swiveled around and looked at me. “Why are you suddenly interested in finding old bathroom memorabilia?” She arched her eyebrows. “Perhaps you want to start collecting plungers?”

“Well,” I took her arm and we moved on. “If you went to a real store you’d pay way more than seventy five cents for one.”
“But we don’t need another plunger. I think the one we have is just fine.”

“Are you sure? It never hurts to have a backup on hand just in case.” I picked up a rusty metal bank, looked at the price tag, shook my head and put it back down.

“In case of what? Or is it because it reminds you of your grandmother? Is that why you want it? Oh, look at that copper kettle,” she pointed. “Wonder if there’s a hole in it?”

“When I think of my grandmother I remember her delicate Dresden lamps and the figurines that chipped if you looked at them the wrong way, let alone dropped one. You notice how careful I am to stay away from expensive crockery?” I spotted something several tables away. “Wow! Now that’s a find! Those pewter bowls look like they date back to the Mayflower.”

We walked in that direction. “That’s all right.” Tasha picked one up. “I have enough bowls, and anyway I prefer stainless steel.” She chose a book from the table in front of her and opened it. “This is an interesting collection of recipes using prunes.”

“Wouldn’t you say pewter bowls are rare and probably valuable? Besides, don’t you have enough cook books?”

“You can’t use pewter for anything other than decoration, it’s poisonous; plus it never hurts to find a cookbook with some obscure recipes that may come in handy someday. You like prunes.”

“It’s decrepit. The cover’s all stained and torn. I’ll bet you could find a pristine copy on Amazon.”

“Not for ten cents, I couldn’t. But maybe you’re right.” She put it back down.

We continued on past rows of incredible bargains: slightly worn beach umbrellas, furniture on its last legs, and CDs by unfamiliar bands and vocalists.
After a while we stopped and bought sandwiches and cold drinks. We sat and ate and then continued browsing. “I guess it’s sold by now.” I said.
“What’s sold?” Tasha turned from a carton of kitchen utensils that had seen better days.

“My grandmother’s plunger. The old one back there with the faded red handle.”

“Oh for goodness sake go buy it. Here, here’s seventy-five cents,” she reached into her change purse and handed me three shiny quarters. “Really, go buy it, otherwise I’ll never hear the end of it.”

“Are you sure?” Suddenly I had a vivid image: my grandmother with a determined look on her face as she tromped down the hall of her Providence home, the red handled plunger firmly in hand.

“Please, be my guest. Far be it from me to interfere with your boyhood memories.”

“That’s fine. It’s probably gone by now anyway. Lots of antique dealers prowling around here this morning, and good deals like that get snapped up in a hurry.”

“I don’t need to go back and buy that cook book, either.” She sighed. “I did like that recipe for prune whip though, but like you said it is rather tattered and some of the pages are falling out.”

“Splurge!” I smiled magnanimously. “Go back and pick it up. It’s only a dime. What can you buy for a dime now-a-days?”
“But I feel badly. I deprived you of your plunger.”

“Oh that’s ok. I’m just glad we can be honest with each other when it comes to making expensive financial decisions, and admittedly I know that somehow we’ll get along without it.”

“Your grandmother’s plunger?” she looked at me, and sighed. “Maybe I should buy it and put it away as a Christmas surprise. Would finding it under the tree make you happy and think of her more often?”

“Only if it needed to be called into active duty; and then it wouldn’t really matter, unless of course it saved us from having to call a plumber.”

February: Storm Moon
10 Feb 2017

The Storm Moon, also known as the Death, Hunger, Snow, or Quickening Moon, is a time to do magick for fertility and strength. For most people in the Northern Hemisphere, February is a time of storms and bleak, short days. In the olden days, it was a time of true hardship. This is a good time to do magick to help you face life’s challenges. You could do a spell to help you with a particularly challenging project at work. Your spell could focus on helping you to accept the challenge, persevere, and make it through. You could concentrate on the idea of weathering

The One Crystal You Need While Traveling
Posted by Michael Shirley

The best crystal to vacation with – tourmalinated quartz. The protective energy of tourmaline growing in conjunction with the amplifying energy of quartz give us a very powerful crystal. The ultimate travel stone, tourmalinated quartz casts a protective circle of light around itself… and you too if you’re in possession of it! Like many crystals, it works silently. Although seeing and feeling crystal energy can give us that much needed validation that our crystals are working, you know this crystal is doing it’s best job when things are going great and you aren’t even paying any attention to the crystal.

I highly suggest purchasing tourmalinated quartz in threes. Ideally when traveling, you would leave one stone on your altar, pack one stone in your luggage, and carry the 3rd stone on your person throughout the duration of the trip. If you rather wear a crystal than carry a crystal, you might want to acquire a tourmalinated quartz necklace or bracelet for your personal stone; that way you don’t have to worry about keeping up with it.

Pulling from the grounding powers of tourmaline, it shields from negative energy and also releases it from within this physical and auric bodies. A Libra birth stone, this complex crystal is all about balance and harmony – not only promoting physical safety to the owner, but also psychological safety. Negative thoughts become positive thoughts, problems become solved problems, and self-sabotage becomes self-sufficient.

Like regular quartz, tourmalinated quartz can also align and cleanse all of the body’s chakras. Quartz isn’t known as a “master healer” for nothing! As well as the above mentioned crystal qualities, it is also widely known for aiding in astral travel, enhancing energy, and shielding from low levels of radiation.

Echoes of Happiness
by Madisyn Taylor

It is easy to laugh when we feel good, but it is when the world appears dim that we most need laughter in our lives.

As children, we laugh hundreds of times each day, delighted by the newness of living. When we reach adulthood, however, we tend to not allow ourselves to let go in a good belly laugh. Inviting laughter back into our lives is simply a matter of making the conscious decision to laugh. Though most of us are incited to laugh only when exposed to humor or the unexpected, each of us is capable of laughing at will. A laugh that comes from the belly carries with it the same positive effects whether prompted by a funny joke or consciously willed into existence. When our laughter comes from the core of our being, it permeates every cell in our physical selves, beginning in the center and radiating outward, until we are not merely belly laughing but rather body laughing.

Laughter has been a part of the human mode of expression since before evolution granted us the art of speech. Through it, we connected with allies while demonstrating our connection with people we didn’t know. In the present, laughter allows us to enjoy positive shared experiences with strangers and loved ones alike. Yet solitary laughter carries with it its own slew of benefits. An energetic and enthusiastic bout of whole-body laughter exercises the muscles, the lungs, and the mind in equal measure, leaving us feeling relaxed and content. When we laugh heartily at life’s ridiculousness instead of responding irritably, our focus shifts. Anger, stress, guilt, and sadness no longer wield any influence over us, and we are empowered to make light of what we originally feared. Laughter also opens our hearts, letting love and light in, changing our perspective, and enabling us to fix our attention on what is positive in our lives.

It is easy to laugh when we feel good, but it is when the world appears dim that we most need laughter in our lives. Our laughter then resonates through our hearts, filling the empty spaces with pure, unadulterated joy. We regain our footing in the moment and remember that no sorrow is powerful enough to rob us of our inborn happiness. When we understand that uninhibited laughter is the food of the soul, nourishing us from within, we know instinctively that life is worthwhile.
