The Celtic Tree Calendar is a calendar with thirteen lunar divisions. Most contemporary Pagans use fixed dates for each “month”, rather than following the waxing and waning lunar cycle. If this was done, eventually the calendar would fall out of sync with the Gregorian year, because some calendar years have 12 full moons and others have 13. The modern tree calendar is based on a concept that letters in the ancient Celtic Ogham alphabet corresponded to a tree.

Rowan Moon January 21 – February 17: Rowan Tree, The Tree Of Perseverance. The Rowan Moon is associated with Brighid, the Celtic Goddess of hearth and home. Honored on February 1, at Imbolc, Brighid is a Fire Goddess who offers protection to mothers and families, as well as watching over the hearth fires. This is a good time of year to perform initiations (or, if you’re not part of a group, do a self-dedication). Known by the Celts as Luis (pronounced loush), the Rowan is associated with astral travel, personal power, and success. A charm carved into a bit of a Rowan twig will protect the wearer from harm. The Norsemen were known to have used Rowan branches as rune staves of protection. In some countries, Rowan is planted in graveyards to prevent the dead from lingering around too long.

Hearth and Home Happiness
Spell Date: Sunday, January 22, 2017

The dark, cold months of winter are a good time to hunker down and stay close to home. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun or enjoy a little indulgence to get you through the season. If you are someone who struggles with the lack of light (or even if you’re not), try this spell to bring a little more enjoyment into your time at home. Be sure to finish up with something special, whether that is a nice piece of chocolate or a hot bath with a good book (or all three!). Say:

“I call in joy and I call in light To bring some warmth on a winter’s night. Fun, indulgence, friends, and cheer, I welcome all to my home so dear.”

Like a Virgin
Spell Date: Saturday, January 21, 2017

Today the Romans traditionally honored Saint Agnes, patron saint of chastity, so it seems like a great time to think “like a virgin.” But wait, let’s go back to the original meaning of the word. A virgin was a woman not under the care and control of a father, brother, or husband; an autonomous woman, independent and not required to answer to any man or child. According to Marilyn Frye, author of Willful Virgin, “virgins are wild and willful humans, not subjugated property.”

Today, regardless of your gender, act like a virgin. Close your eyes and picture yourself as a wild and willful human. How do you dress? What do you desire? Who do you love? How do you live your life? Now open your eyes and spend the day living like a virgin. You may choose to hold on to your virginity for a long, long time.

Beauty Affirmation
Spell Date: Friday, January 20, 2017

Since the moon is waning now, use this time to focus inward, contemplating and meditating. Consider beauty. It is not merely physical, and it’s certainly in the eyes of the beholder. But don’t forget how much of beauty is actually your attitude and behavior—your spirit and actions.

Do something today that makes you feel good. Donate to charity, spend time with loved ones, or pamper yourself. Meditate on how beautiful you are, child of the stars. And tell others how beautiful they are as well. Whenever you feel uncertain of your true beauty, recall these words:

“I am body, mind, and soul, A unique and perfect whole. Beautiful inside and out, Remember this and never doubt.”

Invocations to Oyuki
Spell Date: Thursday, January 19, 2017

Oyuki, or Yuki-onna, is a Japanese snow spirit. She can be perilous in person, appearing as a pale woman with long black hair who can freeze unwary travelers in their tracks. But she can also be asked to bring or to banish snowstorms. Here is an incantation for each purpose.

To attract snow:
“Oyuki, spirit of the winter snow and wind, come and dance for me bring long hair blowing and white kimono swirling and cold wet kisses come forth, Oyuki, and let us dance together in this frozen time”

To repel snow:
“Oyuki, goddess of blizzards and wintertime, pass by this place now lift up your white robes and tie back your wild hair and close your cold lips go on, Oyuki; some other time we shall play but not here, not now”

Break a Bad Habit Song
Spell Date: Wednesday, January 18, 2017

We all have those bad habits we wish we could stop. But we need to want to change for it to happen. Spells are all about change. Biting our nails and not picking up after ourselves are simple habits we can break ourselves.

Breaking a habit starts with you wanting to break it. Then it takes time to work the habit into something positive. Repetition is the way to create a good habit out of the old. Spell chants remind you to create this new pattern of behavior. You use a familiar piece of music and just rewrite the words. Make it an earworm that will pop into your head in times of stress. Write a short chant to help you remember your focus and objective. Sing it, even if it is just in your head. Use as needed.

Blessing Our Electronic Devices
Spell Date: Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Yes, of course we stand before our altars and invoke and work with the pantheons of classical Greece or Rome, India, or Northern Europe. But where do we do our real day-today work? On our devices. Who has a landline these days? How often do we sit down at our desktop computers? Who these days knows what a typewriter is? Who sends anything via snail mail?

But, alas, our devices occasionally fail us. Just like us, they need regular “meals”; that is, they need to be regularly recharged. Here’s an invocation to draw down and pull in the power:

“Chargers, chargers, in your sockets, Make my ’tronics run like rockets. PC, laptop, smartphone, tablet, Power every app and applet.”

Heartwings Love Notes 760 How to Grow your Heart Bigger
Heartwings says, “When we grow our hearts they can hold more love.”

Most are familiar with a character of Dr. Seuss’s called the Grinch. His heart was too small by far. This resulted in his acting meanly toward others and trying to take away their joy because it annoyed him. When he couldn’t, his heart grew. Most of us believe we would never try to steal another’s joy, however perhaps we could be ignoring opportunities to grow our hearts bigger. This is something I had to learn and I worked hard to learn it. It’s not easy to do so; the first step is to observe one’s very own smallness of heart.

For example, when I look at someone or even myself with a critical eye, observe with distaste my or another’s extra pounds or ill fitting clothing, or think negatively of my or another’s behavior and don’t catch myself doing it, I am missing an opportunity to grow my heart. I could change my thinking and reflect that they could be on medication, indigent, ill or feeling uncomfortable and instead feel compassion for them or myself. I’m aware that when I am tired or someone annoys or irritates me, it takes restraint not to snap back. Yet when I can manage to see them in a different light, it will grow my heart.

Another way to grow my heart is to not act selfishly and take the biggest or the best or the most for myself. Being generous to others is a simple way for me to grow my heart larger. As children we are often taught this by well meaning parents, yet depending on how I might be feeling, it is easy to do the opposite. Then too, if I do it grudgingly or without a genuine desire to give, it may not be as effective for heart enlargement, however it can still work to my benefit. The best attitude is to put others ahead of oneself with joyful willingness as opposed to grudging obligation.

While it is sometimes painful to observe myself behaving in ways other than how I want to see myself, it is also worth doing. I’ve learned that if I catch myself in the act often enough, I will stop whatever negative behavior I observe. Selfish behavior, a judgmental attitude, an outlook automatically critical of others can lead to shrinkage of the heart. Generosity, compassion, and loving giving can lead to the growth of the heart. Plus there is often a return on one’s investment. What goes around really does come around. Those who practice these virtues may well reap good fortune in some way in return. While this is not a reason to be doing it, it is a nice side benefit.

May you find ways to grow your heart and enjoy the process.

Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert

Stephen Halpert
The Extra Bridegroom

Harry was peering at the works of the antique clock set out on the dining room table. Bessie brought him a pitcher of ice tea, set it down and kissed him. “We’ve no plans for Saturday night? Right?”
“None that I know of. Why?”
“Oh good,” she poured his tea and joined him. “I’ve invited Lucille, Willard, Clyde and hopefully Mae to dinner.”
He frowned. “Who are Willard and Clyde?”
“The two men determined to marry my sister Lucille.”
Harry set aside his eyeglasses and raised his eyebrows? “Lucille wants to get married again?”
“Oh Harry, she’s in a terrible pickle. They’re both very insistent. Willard’s a fencing instructor and he’s already challenged Clyde to a duel.”
Harry sipped his tea. “Isn’t dueling illegal?”
“At first she thought it was romantic.”
“You mean the winner walks away with Lucille while the other needs an undertaker?”
Bessie sighed. “Well when she heard about what happened to Alexander Hamilton she put her foot down. Then she decided to introduce them both to Mae instead, figuring one of them would be smitten.”
Harry grinned. “You mean your promiscuous cousin.”
Bessie set down her tea. “Now be nice. Over the years everyone matures, even Mae.”
“The Mae I remember…”
Bessie shook her head. “Really Harry, since her last divorce Mae’s really changed.”
“Bessie, the Mae I remember was the biggest flirt in high school.”
“Don’t hold that against her, Harry. Remember, she came from a broken home. But since she flunked out of Weight Watchers she hardly ever goes out. I fear she’s just sitting in her condo miserable and alone, watching TV.”
Harry laughed out loud. “Dressed like the hostess at a strip club no doubt.”
“Please Harry, be kind.”
He finished his iced tea. “If burlesque were ever revived she’d be a headliner.”
Bessie picked up his empty glass and stood. “Not since her last divorce. Something about Mae has changed. For gosh sakes Harry, Lucille even told me she’s started going to church.”
He nodded. Then grinned. “Remember the time she and some guy came into my store looking to buy a bed? They were upstairs all afternoon trying them out. Some of my other customers complained.”
“That was the last husband, Harry. You told me already and there’s no need to go into it again.”
His face grew serious. Bessie smiled. “You look like philosophy professor.”
He cleared his throat. “Lucille wants to see Mae happy in her golden years. And this could prove to be an easy remedy for dealing with that extra bridegroom of hers.”
“Exactly,” Bessie smiled. “Thank you for seeing it that way.”
At Lucille’s request, Saturday night supper was cold cuts, salads, little rolls and a trifle served in Bessie’s antique crystal bowl. Bessie and Harry were admiring the spread when the doorbell rang.
Four hours later however, they stood looking at the mess that had become of their dining room, while Lucille sobbed on their embroidered Chinese couch.
“Oh Harry,” Bessie said sadly, “because of my cousin Mae we’re on the verge of a scandal.”
“This will all blow over,” Harry said. He righted one of the chairs that had fallen over in the scuffle. “A few laughs some pointing of fingers perhaps, but I wouldn’t worry about it.”
Bessie raised her voice. “I do worry about it. I want to be elected to an office in the Garden Club, and you don’t know how proper their membership is.”
Lucille started blowing her nose. “It’s all my fault,” she sobbed. “If I hadn’t called the police…”
“But you had to,” Bessie said. “They might have killed each other.”
Harry patted Lucille’s arm. “Believe me it will all blow over. At least things calmed down and the men were gone before the police got here. That right there is a blessing.” He picked up the fallen lamp and checked to see if it still worked.
Bessie straightened a crooked picture. “I’ve never had the police trudge through my kitchen fully armed, and I hope I never do again.”
Harry went over and hugged her. “They were just fearful of terrorists. You can’t blame them. These are strange times.”
Bessie put her head on his shoulder. “Lucille, I certainly hope you stay away from both of them.”
“Oh believe me I will,” Lucille said. “From now on if I want to meet any men I’ll either take a cruise or go to Florida.”
Harry peered at his sister-in-law. “You know when you call the police and say there’s a man with a sword trying to stab someone, and his opponent is waving a pistol at him, how else would you expect them to react?”
“I know, I know. Just give me my coat, Harry, I need to go home.” She called Uber and left.
Bessie sighed, righted another chair and sat down. “Harry, that was the riot squad. They could have been going to war!”
He stroked her shoulders. “In their minds they were. Bessie, police put up with a lot. You can’t blame them.”
“I’m just sorry for Lucille. She does want to get married, and how could she know they’d both fall for Mae?”
“Judging from what I saw of the two of them, I think she did Lucille a big favor,” Harry said.
Bessie stood up and began gathering the scattered flowers from her centerpiece. “And then when Clyde pulled out that handgun and began waving it at Willard… why do people carry guns Harry?”
“It’s the times, Bessie.
She sighed and shook her head at the upended crystal bowl and the delicious trifle dripping onto their oriental carpet. “Whatever.” She shrugged. “I still wish Mae hadn’t pulled off her dress and begun that snake charmer dance.”
“Good thing she did,” Harry said. “It took their mind off murdering each other in a hurry.
“And then Lucille gave both diamond rings to Mae and told her to choose, because they were the same carats.”
“And Mae said I’ll take them both and rushed out the door arm in arm with the two men!” Bessie said with a laugh. “I’m glad you straightened everything out with the police.”.
“Took a little explaining,” Harry grinned, “but when I told them I’d take all those tickets to the policemen’s ball everything was fine.”
“I’m so glad my husband’s the mattress tsar of Pawtucket,” Bessie said with a smile. “Otherwise we might all be spending the night in jail.”

Candle Therapy and Crystals

Using candles as therapy has been around for thousands of years, and has been
practiced by nearly every religion. Candle therapy can be used to unite the
powers of mind, body, and spirit. From ancient times to the present, Candles
have lit our way through every transition! From celebrations and ceremonies to
proclamations and processions! The candle’s flame has always been a metaphor for
the soul! It possesses a tranquil and almost hypnotic atmosphere to those who
allow its power to take them to a very special place.

A candle acts as a “self object”. A self object is an object that is a
reflection of our self, a reflection upon which we can act. The candle reflects
the spiritual and ethical changes we would like to bring about in ourselves. It
burns as a reminder and symbol of our desires. Sometimes we have to hand our
dreams over to a force more powerful than we are.

The techniques of allowing candles to help in crystal work involve
holding a selected crystal in your hand or hands or placing the stone
on the floor or table near you and your mat and allow yourself to
focus on the mineral as you meditate.

In a meditative or yoga group circle, you may place the candles and
crystals in the center of the group. Make sure that the intention of
the entire group is that of the same intent.

Crystals can allow one to reach higher spiritual levels during
meditation. The crystal magnifies one’s personal energy by aligning
and connecting with universal power. The candle can center and align
by concentrating on it’s flame.

If you decide to make your own candles, you can incorporate crystals into the candles
as an energetic component.

Crystals used in making candles is another wonderful way to blend the metaphysical
power of the crystal with the color of the candle and the scent of an essential oil.
This power tool is a wonderful way to bring many of the tools of your intentions together!

Balancing Self with Family Life

by Madisyn Taylor

Taking time for daily self-care is vital and necessary and should not be seen as a luxury.

Many of us have a hard time balancing taking care of ourselves with taking care of our family responsibilities. For people with young children, this can be especially challenging, but even people without children have obligations to care for extended family, partners, pets, and the home in which they live. It’s easy to lose track of our own needs as we give ourselves to the people, pets, and places we love. However, it is essential to their well-being that we take care of ourselves, filling our own wells with water so that we have something to offer when we return home each day.

It is easy to get caught up in the demands of home life because they never stop. There is always one more thing you can do, another dish in the sink, a counter that needs wiping, or a person who needs a ride somewhere. If you don’t set some boundaries, you will find yourself on an endless journey of housework and doing for others. Eventually, you will probably feel drained and out of touch with your inner life force. Instead of waiting for this to happen, integrate self-care into your daily schedule. Even Buddha insisted that he have one hour completely to himself every day. There are times when even that will not be possible–for example, with a new baby or a sick relative. At times like this, retreating inward energetically can be a lifesaver. You can always find five minutes to close your eyes and breathe consciously. You may even be able to meditate.

Most of the time, though, it is possible to set aside a full hour for yourself each day. In addition, scheduling a longer interval of time, perhaps on a weekly basis, can really help to restore your energy. Get a massage or go to a movie or out with a friend. Taking time to experience the world outside of your home makes returning home all the more wonderful. In the same way, taking care of yourself is a natural complement to taking care of your home and family.
