Light Away the Blues
Spell Date: Sunday, January 15, 2017

Cold days and long, dark nights are challenging for the best of us, but even more so for those affected by seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Our ability to light our way in the darkness has always been one of our most important needs.

For this spell, gather one candle for each of the four directions and one white candle for spirit. You will also need one small sage bundle.

Light the white candle and then use it to light the other four candles. Light your smudge stick. Pass the smoke over your lighted candles while saying:

“Spirit, blessed, powerful, and bright, I am always surrounded by the light. Darkness has no place in me, For by your light, I see clearly.”

Repeat this ritual whenever you need a lift from the dark days of winter or anytime you are feeling blue.

Go Fly a Kite
Spell Date: Saturday, January 14, 2017

Today is International Kite Day. Gather your family or coven for an entertaining day of kite creation.

Kites may be elaborate or simple, able to fly or merely decorative. Many books and websites are devoted to kite construction. Store-bought kites can be personalized. Write blessings and requests on the kite or on the tail
section(s). If you are aiming for a functional type of kite or going with a pre-made kite, leave enough room at the end of the day for flying, weather permitting. Or you may simply enjoy the day creating a kite to be used in the future.

Call upon the air element, the wind gods and goddesses, and air spirits to assist in your creation and flight. Bless and cleanse your kite with a sage stick, and repeat the following or create your own spell:

“Keepers of the wind, we ask you to blow gently and carry this kite aloft. Let it play in the sky and dance among the sylphs. However it please you, bring it safely back to earth. Or let it go to find another partner and rise again some other day.”

Lemon, Clove, and Salt Spell
Spell Date: Friday, January 13, 2017

Every now and then we may feel the need to reinforce our wards, our boundaries, our shields. This spell draws upon Italian folk magic and three simple ingredients found in many homes: lemon, clove, and salt.

Ground, center, and align. Go to the kitchen or a working space that is embedded in your day-to-day home life. Take the bright yellow lemon, which has solar associations, and begin to draw up empowered breath from the earth and the worlds below. Breathe seven times over the lemon and perceive it glowing; perhaps you even hear a buzzing. Push thirteen cloves into the lemon, each time focusing on reinforcing the wards of yourself and your home. Finally, lay the lemon-and-cloves spell in a bowl containing rock salt, and do so with purpose and power. So mote it be.

Take a few moments to figure out what your goals and intentions are, then write them down on a piece of paper. Light a white candle and say the following, holding those intentions in your heart:

Heartwings Love Notes: 759 A Sip of Spring

Heartwings says: “In January spring dances in and out again tantalizing us with wisps of warmth, promising more.”

There is a deceptively warm period in the first month of the year called the January thaw. It usually comes at the end of the month, but sometimes earlier. It is the opening note of a long prelude to spring. Sadly, it raises hopes too soon dashed. February sets in, the snow falls, the cold descends, and winter reminds us that we have a long way to go. The upside is that at least the days are longer and brighter as the sun grows stronger and shines from higher in the sky. The burgeoning light keeps us apprised of spring’s actual advent.

Expectations often create disappointment. However it is difficult to avoid having them. The anticipation that is the creator of my expectations is what happens when I yearn toward something that is just out or reach or even beyond my control, like spring. This habit begins in childhood. Once we outgrow the present moment mindset of our early years, we are vulnerable to it. For instance, when the circus was coming to town it was a big event in my young life. My grandmother always took me and every year I loved it.

The difficulty with anticipation, especially when one is an adult, is that it can suck the juice out of the actual event. A few years ago Stephen and I took a friend’s two children to a local circus in a town nearby. Based on my memories of Barnum and Bailey, I had unrealistic expectations of the little circus and did not enjoy it nearly as much as I would have otherwise. On the other hand the two children we took had a wonderful time. Unexpectedly, my enjoyment ended up being about that rather than about the performances.

Today in the news I saw that the circus of my childhood-Barnum and Bailey, will be no more. This may have started I suppose when they released the elephants and now they are disbanding completely. I wonder if those who like me once anticipated the arrival of the circus will be disappointed. I haven’t been to a Barnum and Bailey performance in many years myself, however I have my memories. Thankfully I can sip those memories whenever I wish. That’s the blessing of memories, like food in the pantry or the refrigerator they are available when I wish to reach for them. Memories of spring, however, cannot compare to its actual advent, and that I eagerly await.

May you find the present moment more joyful than any anticipated future.

Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

News from the Beauty Parlor

Harry scratched his head and glared at the works of an old mantle clock he was determined to restore. It was resisting his efforts. A piece rolled under the table. Grunting, he pushed back his chair and reached for it.
The back door slammed. “I’m home from the beauty parlor,” came a shrill voice from the kitchen. “And I picked up some groceries on the way. Want to help me put them away?”
He could tell from her voice something was amiss. Reluctantly he set his repair work aside and came into the kitchen.
“Bessie, tell me what’s wrong?”
“Everything,” she sighed. She took a jar of soup out of the fridge, poured the liquid into a pot and set it on the stove. “At least I don’t have to fuss over lunch.” She turned and looked at Harry. “Mrs. Rackatanski’s husband has a crush on a new tenant in their building who she found out was a cross dresser.”
Harry raised his eyebrows. He started taking the groceries out of the supermarket bags and putting them on the counter.
“Worse, Sadie Segal’s elderly Dachshund has to have dental implants and she’s trying to get by on her social security so how can she pay for them?”
“Oh dear, that’s too bad. But finish your story. What’s Mrs. Rackatanski going to do?”
“Who knows,” Bessie said. “You never get the full story at the beauty parlor.” But Lucille urged her to get one side of her head shaved.”
“How’s that going to help?” Harry asked.
Bessie stirred the soup, then went to put away the groceries Harry was unloading. “And what’s worse Lynn Songbird just found out her son’s gay.”
Harry shook his head. “How old’s her son? Did he tell her or how did she find out?”
Bessie sighed. “Forty two. And now she knows why he never married. It seems she went to his Facebook page and saw him dancing with a professional wrestler. Well you can imagine how that made her feel.”
Harry sighed. “Poor thing; must have been quite a shock.” He got two soup bowls and a couple of plates out of the cupboard.
“And the big news is my sister Lucille has two new men in her life, both offering matrimony. Poor dear.”
“What do you mean? I’d say good for her.”
“Oh not Lucille, Harry. When it comes to husbands Lucille is very down to earth and only wants one at a time. So its terribly confusing for her.”
Harry stopped talking and blinked. He peered at Bessie. “You don’t look like the same woman who left the house this morning.”
Bessie laughed. “Took you long enough to notice my Poodle Do.”
Harry frowned. “That’s what they call it?”
“Harry dear, let me tell you one thing about hair. It always grows back. So if you don’t like it this week just relax.”
Harry shifted in his chair. “You let Lucille talk you into that hairstyle didn’t you.”
“I had to. She was so confused about which of the two to marry.”
“If she can’t make up her mind then maybe neither one is a good catch.”
Bessie grinned. “You tell her that.”
“Oh no not me. Your sister Lucille is a termagant and the less said to her by me the better.”
“That shouldn’t make any difference Harry. After all, she’s family.” She shook her bouncy curls. “I hope you’ll grow to like my Poodle Do. It may seem a little short at first but remember Harry, hair always grows back.”
“How long do I have to endure this until I have my wife back again?”
“For gosh sake Harry, a few snips here and there, a curl and a color rinse– that’s all it was. You sound like my father when I stopped braiding my hair.”
“I guess I’ll be able to get used to it.” He sighed and shook his head. “But you look totally different.”
“For the better, I hope?” Bessie patted her curls. “How can I look any different to you, when to me I look pretty much the same, just curlier?”
“You let Lucille talk you into this, didn’t you?”
Bessie shrugged. “She kept showing me the diamond rings, and Estelle just snipped away. We both agreed that I needed a change. After all, this is a lot less expensive than two weeks in Florida:”
“I’ll take you to Florida.”
“It’s not the same Harry. Having a trendy style can wake a woman up and make her feel young again.”
He put his head in his hands. “You’re a good looking woman. I don’t see why you can’t leave well enough alone. I’ll bet it was expensive.”
“Harry everything’s expensive. Lucille said I look sexier this way and I tend to agree.” She winked. “Did you get the mantle clock running?”
“Not yet, but I will. I’ll probably need some new parts. How expensive?”
One fifty but that included her tip.”
He started coughing. “Never mind. I’ll get used to it.”
Bessie smiled. “You should have seen what I avoided. Mrs. Rackatanski had the entire left side of her scalp shaved and painted bright purple. At first I wondered why she did it but then I had to smile. She did look more youthful.”
Harry looked horrified. “You’d never do that? Have one side of your head shaved?”
“Probably not,” she smiled.
“You’ve so lovely just the way you are.”
“But Harry if I’m lovely regardless, a new hairstyle isn’t going to matter aside from making me feel better. You should see Lucille. Now she has an orange streak and is thinking of getting a tattoo under her left ear.”
He sighed audibly.
But Bessie hadn’t finished. “Maybe it’s time for you to get something trendy. Lucille and I agreed you’d look spiffy with a gold streak going across your scalp. They’re having a special on that next week.”
“What on earth for?” His voice choked.
“So when we go out to dinner people who don’t know us will think you’re hot. After all you are the Mattress Tsar of Pawtucket and everyone sees your picture in the ads and on TV.”
“Bessie, I like my hair just the way it is. Or at least what’s left of it.”
“That’s just it Harry. Sometimes we need to do silly things to stay in style. Besides as I said the virtue of hair is that it always grows back.”
“So you’re saying you think I look too old?”
“Well not as old as that clock you’re trying to fix, but I guess everything’s relative.” She ladled soup into the bowls and put a box of crackers and some cheese on the table. “A trendy hairstyle with a wave would help–maybe some new clothes. Some of what you have in the bedroom closet goes back to just after we were married.”
“Well I do need something,” he smiled.
Her face brightened. “A stylish new suit or even a leather vest?”
“No,” he shook his head. “I was thinking of a few new pairs socks.”

Crystal Therapy: Investing In Change

Change is inevitable. Our lives are made up of the building blocks of
change. Change creates the person we must grow to be. Change happens
for a reason. That reason is to allow us possibilities we may not
have seen in the first place. This can be traumatic or it can be less

The single most important point you can make about change is that in
most cases it’s not what faces you that’s the problem, it’s how you
react to it.

How you react is determined by how you perceive a particular change.
The Chinese word for crisis is “weiji”. Two characters that
separately mean danger and opportunity. Every problem we encounter in
life can be viewed that way. It is a chance to show that we can
handle it. Changing the way you think, can change a life of stress
and discomfort to a life of challenge and excitement.

Change shows itself in many forms. The move to a different career, by
choice or not, the loss of a loved one, the loss of a relationship,
the move to a new home or simply the change in the weather and how we
feel. It is important to embrace the transition!. Struggling, kicking
and screaming and dragging your heals will only prolong trying to
control the uncontrollable. Learn to recognize strengths you may have
overlooked. Embrace optimism and reform your old belief system.

Crystals for Change:

-Bloodstone brings the ability to adapt to change more easily.

-Cerussite is grounding and shows us how to understand change as it
happens around us.

-Chrysanthemum Stone bring equilibrium to changing situations

-Chrysocolla allows us to accept change with calmness and serenity It
makes for smooth transitions.

-Larimar gives us the ability to “go with the flow”. It is a heart
soothing stone that brings awareness to change.

-Malachite is a great stone to have, which encourage change to occur.

-Mookaite (Jasper) helps to emphasize the flexibility with change and
encourages new experiences.

-Moonstone makes one conscious of the fact that all things are part
of a cycle of constant change.

-Rose Quartz assists in the acceptance of change that is necessary.

Treatments for Change

Carry 4 of the above stones with you in a pouch, pocket or purse.

A “Change” gem essence can be created with rose quartz, malachite and
chrysocolla. Mist over the entire aura. Take 8-10 drops under the
tongue every 4 hours.

Laying of Stones: Place Rose Quartz at the Heart Chakra. Use
Malachite and Bloodstone at the Heart Chakra. Lay a piece of
Chrysocolla at the Throat Chakra. Chrysanthemum Stone and Cerussite
can be placed at the Root Chakra, at both hip bones or between the

Emphasis on the Heart Chakra. This chakra helps us to embrace a
changing world. It allows us to love and accept change as it passes
our way. When the heart chakra is open it allows us freedom to be
ourselves and to accept change that will keep us open and aware. This
balance of openness to change and accepting it freely, gives us an
even stronger ability to then follow our heart’s desire without fear.

Crystal Elixir: Make up a crystal elixir with bloodstone and larimar.
Add sunflower oil and rosemary essential oil. Massage this oil onto
the Heart Chakra in a circular motion. Apply this elixir to the pulse
points on the wrist, neck abdomen and top of feet.

Meditation with Clear Quartz: This stone shows us clarity of change
and sees us through the other side Meditate with this stone in your
dominant hand or both hands together. Place the stone in front of you
or meditate in a circle of clear quartz.

Body Language
by Madisyn Taylor

Tuning in to the language of our bodies can be very enlightening and increases our intuition.

So much can be revealed to us when we listen to the language of our bodies. Our bodies are always speaking, sending us messages through the way we move, the sensations that arise from within, and the gestures and expressions that we make when we are communicating with others. Tuning in to the language of our bodies can be very enlightening, especially as most communication is believed to take place nonverbally. It is also believed that the body never lies, and that if we want to know the truth about ourselves and others, then we should listen to what our bodies have to say. Anyone who has ever flirted with someone they are attracted to has probably, at one point in time or another, brushed their hands through their hair or found themselves leaning forward to get closer to that person. Someone feeling defensive will tend to cross their arms over their chest, while a person who wants to withhold something may look away when speaking.

If you want to know how you truly feel about a person or a situation, then it is a good idea to tune in to what you are feeling inside. Excitement, nervousness, anxiety, and fear are just some of the messages that your body wants you to hear. Your body can also be a very reliable compass. Anyone who has ever been somewhere they don’t want to be has probably experienced their bodies trying to move them away from that particular circumstance. And while it can be very easy to talk ourselves into and out of choices we may make with our minds, it isn’t so easy to change the truth of our hearts that reside within our bodies.

To begin tuning in to this subtle form of communication, start taking the time to notice what your body is telling you. Greet each feeling or sensation as a message carrying wisdom from your body. Tune in to what your body is telling you about the situations and people you encounter and listen to what others are communicating to you through their bodies. We already are subconsciously receptive to the language of our bodies, but when we choose to consciously pay attention, we hear and understand so much more about ourselves and the people around us.
