Casting Eternal Light
Spell Date: Sunday, January 8, 2017

Cleanse a Swarovski aquamarine baroque-style drop pendant with saltwater. This starry gemstone is evocative of January’s blue-hued dawn light, an iconic time of solar regeneration. From 5:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. today, hang the pendant in a mistletoe or willow tree. If you cannot access such a tree, find a nearby balcony railing, fence line, or shrub, and tie on a spring of willow or mistletoe, imbibing this solar tree energy.

Suspend the crystal so it hangs freely and will receive direct sunlight throughout the morning. When the first solar glow refracts into rainbows, chant this Kabalistic affirmation:

“Nimble creation and earthly formation, reside and radiate your perpetually vivid light. O Solar Yod ( light), a spark spun of Ain Sof (eternity), nurture your bright fountain of splendor within this gem.”

Wear this crystal for healing work or ceremony, or gift as needed. Store your pendant in golden felt and repeat this affirmation to recharge it any time.

A Spell for Things That Go Bump in the Night
Spell Date: Saturday, January 7, 2017

We’re still in the year’s darkest months, and the night can be full of bumps and chills. Protect yourself from disturbances with a charm for peaceful sleep.

Make a simple drawstring bag by sewing a large running stitch around the edges of a five- or six-inch circle of fabric and gathering it into a pouch.

Fill the pouch with a piece of snowflake obsidian (for grounding and protection), a pinch each of mugwort (for dreams) and sage (for peaceful sleep), a few rose petals (for comfort and emotional security), some lavender (relaxation), and a small feather. On a small piece of paper, write BUMP and draw a line through it. Add this to the bag, too.

Tie the bag shut with a piece of string, fastening it with a square knot to invoke elemental protection. Leave the string ends long to trap negative energies. Hang the bag from your headboard or nightstand. Sweet dreams be yours!

To Honor Perchta
Spell Date: Friday, January 6, 2017

Today is the day of Frau Perchta, a Norse Goddess associated with the wilderness, spinning, and even the Wild Hunt in some parts of Germany. On this night, folks would leave offerings of food out for her, hoping for her blessings of good luck in the coming year. Why not honor Perchta by leaving some cream and a hearty slice of bread out for her? And ask her for blessings throughout the year by creating some sort of simple weaving project, perhaps for use on your altar. Those simple weaving looms that use loops of fabric are very easy to work with and make great coasters and hot pads. Similar looms can also easily be made using cardboard. Check around the Web.

An Ivy Spell
Spell Date: Thursday, January 5, 2017

Traditionally this was the day ivy was used to divine what kind of health a person would experience during the coming year. Ivy was also used to protect the home from harmful energy during the winter months.

To predict your health for the rest of the year, you’ll need an ivy leaf, a bowl of water, and a clean white cloth. First, place the ivy leaf in the bowl of water. Think of any health concerns you may have and cover the bowl with the cloth. Let it sit overnight undisturbed. Check the leaf the following morning. If the leaf has remained green and unblemished, you should have a healthy year. If the leaf has begun to darken or is covered with black spots, you should take steps to protect your health—get plenty of rest, watch your diet, and so on. To protect your home from negativity, keep an ivy plant near a window or door.

World Braille Day
Spell Date: Wednesday, January 4, 2017

Today we celebrate Louis Braille for his genius invention of the Braille system of raised writing. His visionary creation brought reading, literature, and education to those with vision challenges. Just as it takes only one candle to illuminate the darkness, it took only one man to bring light to the masses.

For this spell, you will need twelve white candles, some Florida water, and a carving tool. Cleanse your candles with the Florida water. Carve any symbols or words that are special to you into the candles.

Close your eyes. Imagine what it would be like if you depended on your sensitive touch to read. Touch your candles, then open your eyes. Light one candle and take in its brilliant flame. Using this candle, light all the other candles. When finished, pinch out the candles while saying:

“As above, so below. The magick is with me wherever I go.”

Use the candles to light other candles throughout the year.

Heartwings Love Notes 758: Two Recipes for Comfort Food

Heartwings says, “Comfort food is especially nice when the chilly winds blow.”

For a number of reasons, my old Fanny Farmers cookbook is my got-to for recipes. I look there first when doing research. There is something tried and true about a book that has been around so many years. In addition, I am what you might call an old fashioned cook. I do not use nor do I possess a microwave oven and I hope never to have to have one. I know many people love them and find them convenient. No doubt they are. However, I feel no need to hurry my food along that way.

By definition comfort food need not be cooked quickly. Sometimes the very best food is some that takes its time and lets he flavors develop. Here are two of my favorite comfort food recipes: Onion soup and Bread pudding. The onion soup recipe is one I have devised from trying different ways to make it and the Bread pudding has evolved from several recipes, my favorite being from The Cat Who Cookbook by Julie Murphy and Sally Abney Stempinski created out of the “Cat Who” series by Lillian Jackson Braun.

Onion Soup Tasha: To serve 4 to 6, thinly slice two medium to large onions to make 1½ to 2 cups. In a heavy bottomed pot melt 2 Tbs butter and 2 Tbs olive oil. Add and sauté the onion, stirring frequently over medium heat. When onion is transparent, reduce heat and continue to cook uncovered over relatively low heat for an hour, stirring occasionally. Add 4 to 6 cups beef broth. Low sodium is best. Cook 15 more minutes and serve with garlic bread, or melt some cheese on toasted bread and float it on top for the French version.

Pleasing Bread Pudding: Depending on appetites, serves 4 to 8. Butter a 1½ quart casserole. Remove the crusts from 4 slices of firm, not soft bread. Cut or tear into smaller pieces. Place in casserole. Measure 1 cup any kind of milk, beat in two eggs, pour over bread. Sprinkle on 1 cup dried fruit-black and/or white raisins, dried cranberries, cherries etc. Sprinkle on 1 teaspoon cinnamon and ½ cup sugar. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Stir well. Add another cup of milk to make 2 cups. Stir again. Place casserole in a shallow pan filled with water. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or until nicely browned on top.

May your comfort food do a good job for those you wish to comfort.

Please enjoy the recipes and if you have any comments or suggestions or whatever, do write and tell me.

Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert at the end of my Love Note, thanks!

Happy Endings

Harry and Bess had just been given a tour of Happy Endings, Central Mass’s new high tech cemetery. Harry was impressed with the view: no large tombstones or statuary. Beyond the pond was a golf course and clubhouse reserved exclusively for the kin of those interred.
Ralph, the salesman sat across from them into his office.
Harry gestured. “What’s par for the seventh hole?”
“Arnold Palmer himself designed it for us,” Ralph slid in. “Par four.”
Hearing this, Harry was sold.
Ralph smiled to himself, envisioning the signed contract.
“You folks have any questions?
“Yes,” Bess said. “Why aren’t there any tombstones? Is everyone here an indigent?”
“Quite the contrary, Madam,” Ralph chuckled. “Only those with the finest credentials are interred here at Happy Endings.”
“And why aren’t there any religious statues?” She persisted.
“Old fashioned monuments are outdated and environmentally unfriendly. Ralph placed a small dome shaped object on his desk. “Just press this.”
Bess did. A soft blue light emanated, and then: “Hello dear ones,” an older woman’s voice said. “Your father and I are so glad you’re visiting us today. And Bonnie, I hope you’ve finally done with Frank! Such a lowlife! How dare you for ever having brought him into our family.”
“And Jimmy,” a sagacious older male voice said. “Stop with the shoplifting already and find yourself a decent therapist.”
Bess rolled her eyes. “Why how is that possible? Talking to the children that way?”
Ralph nodded wisely. “Once you’re all signed up then you and Harry will visit our recording studio and share up to ten minutes of personal sound bytes.” He nodded knowingly. “Those ways your family will know you’re continually looking out for their best interests.”
He went into his closer. “So instead of the old fashioned cumbersome tombstone, we offer these exclusive highly personal environment friendly smart domes.” He looked directly at Bess.
“As you can see they’re eminently attractive plus you can choose your own special color emanation.”
“I’m not so sure,” Bess frowned. “Not that I wouldn’t be tempted to leave a few well chosen last words for our daughter Shirley.”
“Leave Shirley alone,” Harry said. “Let the poor kid lead her own life and find her own way.”
Ralph knew that at times like this is was best to remain silent and not to interfere.
Bess peered out at the sea of glowing domes. “And isn’t it kinda clausphobic everyone being buried so close to each other? What if I don’t like the person next to me? I don’t think I’d go for that.” She wrinkled her nose.
Ralph nodded. He had dealt with customer resistance before. “Only the best citizenry here at Happy Endings. That, madam I can assure you.”
Bess looked at Harry and frowned. “You like this whole idea don’t you? And you never liked leaving the house for fear of missing company. How could you be happy here? Being buried so far away from home next to people you never met?”
“It doesn’t really matter,” Harry said dryly. He looked out over the rich lawns and putting greens.
Picking up on his nostalgia Ralph plodded on. “And of course with interment comes a lifetime membership to your designated next of kin. All clubhouse, pool and green fees covered.” He smiled.
“I really don’t like the idea of perfect strangers walking all over me once I’m dead,” Bess fussed. “I think I’d prefer a more old fashioned granite stone, maybe one with an angel carved on it.”
“Yes,” the salesman agreed. “But I must warn you both that perpetual care in those everyday cemeteries is a pretty expensive proposition. And in your gated high end cemeteries it costs many thousands annually just for the mowing and stone polishing. That doesn’t include semiannual plantings, gravel, fresh flowers and of course snow removal.” He looked directly at Bess. “Frankly madam you don’t strike me as a woman who’d want her final resting place to appear shabby.”
“I don’t care about all that,” Harry said. He was leafing through the beautifully illustrated color catalogue showing the golf course and the clubhouse interiors.
“I don’t know, Harry,” Bess said. “I’d like to be buried next to my sister Lucile.” She looked at Ralph. “I’m very fond of her.”
Harry sniffed disapprovingly. “Personally I always thought your sister Lucile talked too much. “I’d rather rest here with a nice view of the driving range.”
“You know I always hated golf!” Bess’s voice began to shrill. “Well Mr. Hole in One, you go right ahead. Be buried here next to some fortune hunter for all I care. See what stunts she pulls on you in the hereafter. You never appreciated my practical common sense anyway.”
Harry got upset. “You’re lucky your sister Lucile wasn’t arrested on a morals charge. I’ll never forget those trashy outfits she wore to family Memorial Day cookouts.”
Ralph peered discretely at his watch.”
“I’m in,” Harry said decisively. He pointed at the catalogue. “I want my dome to blink bright red and I’ll sign the papers right now.”
“Oh no you won’t!” Bess exclaimed. She stood and grabbed Harry’s arm. Wide-eyed, Ralph watched her start to drag Harry out the door. “I’d rather we were launched into outer space than buried here,” “At least then maybe we’d have a view of the stars instead of people playing golf. I don’t even like golf Whenever I tried to hit the ball it would always fall off that silly wooden thing.”
“But supposing that spaceship blew up.” Harry said. “We’d become tiny particles exploded to kingdom come. Exposed to all that space radiation. Knowing how particular you are I expect you wouldn’t like that.”
“No,” Bessie agreed. “It’s wouldn’t.”
He turned and smiled at Ralph. “Let us know when you’re having a half price sale. My wife can’t resist s a bargain.”

Why We Are Not Shown the Big Picture
by Madisyn Taylor

Often we want to be shown the big picture but it is not always in our best interest as we can easily become overwhelmed.

Sometimes, we may find ourselves wishing we knew what our lives are going to look like or what gifts and challenges are going to be presented to us in the coming months or years. We may want to know if the relationship we’re in now will go the distance or if our goals will be realized. Perhaps we feel like we need help making a decision and we want to know which choice will work out best. We may consult psychics, tarot cards, our dreams, and many other sources in the hopes of finding out what the future holds. Usually, at most, we may catch glimpses. And even though we think we would like to know the whole story in all its details, the truth is that we would probably be overwhelmed and exhausted if we knew everything that is going to happen to us.

Just think of your life as you’ve lived it up to this point. If you are like most of us, you have probably done more and faced more than you could have ever imagined. If someone had told you as a child of all the jobs and relationships you would experience, along with each one’s inherent ups and downs, you would have become overwhelmed. With your head full of information about the future, you would have had a very hard time experiencing your life in the present moment, which is where everything actually happens.

In many ways, not knowing what the future has in store brings out in us the qualities we need to grow. For example, it would have been difficult to commit yourself to certain people or projects if you knew they wouldn’t ultimately work out. Yet, it was through your commitment to see them through that you experienced the lessons you needed to grow. Looking back on your life, you would likely be hard pressed to say that anything in your past should not have happened. In fact, your most challenging experiences with their inevitable lessons may have ultimately brought you the greatest rewards. Not knowing the future keeps us just where we need to be–fully committed and in the present moment.

A Trip to the Dentist

As Harry perused a current issue of Dental News, Bessie looked around the dentist’s office. She felt miffed. Why they had to be so early for their appointments was beyond her. But this was always Harry’s way. Knowing him he’d be early for his own funeral.

She frowned. She didn’t especially care for the paintings of swollen gums and darkened abscessed teeth that occupied the walls of the otherwise drab waiting room. Why Dr. Silkway didn’t have bright cheerful paintings of flowers or other restful scenes was beyond her. She’d always thought teeth per se looked unfriendly and barbaric.

“I don’t know why we always have to be to the dentist a half hour early,” Bessie complained. “The chairs in here are uncomfortable and the magazines are dull and out of date. Why doesn’t he get new magazines?”

Harry smiled and patted Bessie’s leg.

She laughed. “Maybe you have a thing for his hygienist.”

Harry set aside the magazine. “Please,” he said. “Being early is a wise move in today’s fast paced world. Supposing there’s a fire and the street’s roped off and we have to drive around forever looking for a place to park. This way we’ll have a parking space. And even worse supposing he’s having a bad day and the patient before us starts screaming. Then we’ll know to get out of here and reschedule our appointments.”

She frowned. “That’s ridiculous, Dr Silkway has a fine reputation. For as long as I’ve known him he’s never pulled the wrong tooth. So because you have a thing about always being early for anything by the time we leave here and I get to the butcher’s the brisket might be all sold out.”

“Please Bessie, it’s just the way I am. You know what they always say about the early bird getting the best worm.”

“We’re not birds, Harry. We’re people, and as far as I know civilized people don’t eat worms so that argument doesn’t hold.”

Now Harry looked miffed. He consulted his watch. “What’s the big deal? With any luck I’ll see him in ten minutes and then it’ll will be your turn.”

“And I have to sit here and wait. I could have gotten my brisket, dropped off my shoes at the cobblers. But oh no, we always have to be early. And it’s always the same. Whenever we go to a movie we’re so early we have to sit through the ads for things we’ll never want and previews for movies neither of us will wish to see. I feel stupid Harry, sitting there like an indigent. People who see us could well think that we can’t afford to pay our heating bill so we sit at the movies to stay warm.”

He smiled and patted her hand. “You know something. Come to think of it I’m tired of brisket. Maybe you could get fish instead.

“Fish! In the middle of the week! Next you’ll want lobster or crab meat. At least brisket is healthy. You never know about fish anymore. I think its time is up.”

He knew not to argue with her. “At least at the movies we can enjoy special treats.”

“Oh yeah, like what?” Her chair was terribly uncomfortable and the heat in the waiting room felt oppressive.

“Popcorn,” he smiled, “and chocolate candy “They have the new flavors, chocolate chip or hot and spicy! And when we’re early we can munch.”

“Do you have any idea the chemicals they put in that stuff not to mention the cavities. I’ll bet the butter comes from China and who knows what else? I’d like to avoid Chinese butter, thank you.

“Please Bessie, Harry began. “At our age we’re old enough to appreciate a some junk food now and again.”

Another patient came in, took off his coat, sat down across from Bessie.

“Harry I want us to last. Our time belongs to us and shouldn’t be compromised by fake synthetic food.”

“And Bessie, I wouldn’t worry too much about cavities. At our age the teeth we’ll probably end up with will outlast the rest of us.”

“And another thing,” she said still ignoring whatever he was trying to say. “Whenever we go out to eat we’re always so early we have to wait until the kitchen is open.”

“You like fresh food, don’t you?”

“That has nothing to do with it.”

“It certainly does. You’re just upset because your chair’s uncomfortable. Here read this article about implants in Dental News. We might want to think about them.”

“Then why bother coming for cleanings if we’re going to get whatever’s left pulled.”

“I see your point,” Harry sighed. He smiled as the hefty blond hygienist put down her phone, jotted something down, came over to Harry and Bessie.

“Oh Mr. and Mrs. Silver how fortunate you’re being here early. Dr. Silkway just got a call from a patient who lost several fillings when she chewed on chocolate covered nuts last night at the movies. It’s an emergency and she’s on her way over. I hope you don’t mind if we slip her in before you.”

She gave Harry her best coquettish smile. He blushed, and Bessie thought he looked like a child in the seventh grade being flirted with for the first time.

“Of course,” he said politely.” I don’t mind waiting a little longer.”

Bessie wrinkled her nose. She wanted to kick him but she didn’t.

“Just give me the car keys, Harry and I’ll run over to the butcher’s and pick up my brisket.” She knew better than to mention the cobblers. “You stay here and wait.”

“You’re sure,” he said earnestly. “I wouldn’t want you to lose your place here in line.”

“No problem,” Bessie said. “You stay here and sit in your uncomfortable chair and I’ll go get my brisket.” She stood up and marched out the door.

The Importance of Keeping Balance

In life, especially during these modern times that are a constant go, it’s easy to lose your balance. But what do we really mean when we seek balance in reference to spirituality? Balance is often thought of as a midpoint between two opposing forces. Black and white, hate and love, faith and skepticism. But life is not broken into a straight line that simply. Most people assume that finding balance means never venturing too far into one side or the other; remaining in a true neutral. Others believe it means staying only “in the light” and eschewing everything considered “dark.” But we believe that neither one of these views is truly balanced.

True neutrality does not exist. It’s an impossibility, because it assumes that there is some kind of universal “center” that is true for every single person. But life is much messier than that. We all experience different things, and even when we experience the same things, we may draw different conclusions from them. So everyone’s idea of “neutral” is not the same. And trying to remain only in this imaginary center point deprives you of experience. In life we all experience highs and lows. That is part of what makes life amazing; the endless state of change. That should be embraced.

Similarly, remaining only in “light” parts of our experience is not balanced either. Too much of a good thing is still too much. There is especially a tendency to only “be good” in religious communities. But we are all only human, and denying that we have a darker side doesn’t make it go away. We feel jealousy, and rage, and hate. These are a fact of our life as much as love, and joy, and humility. Suppressing those emotions in an attempt to remain “good” is harmful.

Balance should be a calmness. A space we create at our center. We should allow ourselves to feel all of the infinite emotions and experiences in this amazing world, without getting swept away by them. Balance is a place we return to. A place we find respite from the storm; a knowledge we carry with us that there is a refuge when it becomes overwhelming. Finding balance in our lives can feel like a constant struggle if we’re fighting to remain in one spot. If our lives were scales, and our experiences weights placed upon them, then we must understand that with every weight placed on one side, we must adjust the center point of the fulcrum between them. That is the true nature of balance. A constant dance of adjustment. But once you free yourself from the concept that balance is a stationary place, it will become much easier to achieve balance.

About The Morning Feast and – The teachings here are based
on ordinary magick, the principle that the mundane and the Divine are not
separate, but peacefully coexist in all things. Know Mother Earth as the
ultimate healer, and learn to utilize her gifts of nature. Inside each woman
is a being of wisdom, deeply connected to the phases of the moon and the
tides of the sea. All we need to do is trust our innate wisdom.

“We all come from the Goddess
And to Her we shall return
Like a drop of rain, going to the ocean”
“May the circle be open, but unbroken,
May the love of the Goddess be ever in your heart.
Merry Meet and Merry Part
And Merry Meet Again!”
