Those New Year’s resolutions you said you were not going to make but did? Here is a project to help you see them through to the end.
Keep them in a spell box. A spell box is a small, covered container made of whatever material you choose, designated to hold “spells in progress.” The box can be a color that is appropriate to the kinds of spells you place in it. It reminds you to work on the spells in progress.
Place stones or herbs appropriate to the spells in the bottom of the box to give the spells energy. Write the intent of the spell and the chant that you devised on a piece of parchment. Tie each piece of parchment with raffia ribbon in a color that matches the spell intent, and keep the spells rolled up inside the box. Decorate the box with the appropriate stones or sigils. Pick out the spells and work on them regularly.

The new year is always a time for change, although we’re not always sure if that change will be for good or ill. Here’s a little spell for guiding the changes in your life to be as positive as possible.
Take a moment to reflect on the year that has passed and the possible changes that will come with the new year. Then recite the following:
“Change is in the air. Things are shifting, moving, evolving. Change is here. Things are growing, stretching, shedding old skins. May I grow easily. May I learn my lessons swiftly. May I shed that which no longer serves painlessly. May I evolve smoothly, Into something more, Something higher, Something greater. Change serves me. Change is my ally. I stretch, I learn, I grow. I am change and change is me. I am ready. So mote it be.”

A Sticky Spell for Protection
Spell Date: Friday, December 30, 2016
For this protection spell, you’ll need a pound of powdered or icing sugar, a jar with a shaker top (a Parmesan cheese–type jar is awesome), and something small that is personal to you, such as a ring or a hair tie. Put the item in the jar with the sugar. Focusing on establishing a boundary, start walking the perimeter of your property, shaking out a little bit of the sugar with every step. Make sure you’ll have enough to go all the way around your property line. Once you’ve completed the circuit, go back in your house. Envision energy rising up out of the sugar and meeting over the center of your house, like an invisible tent. Anyone wishing you harm is going to get stuck in the sugary stickiness, while those bringing you goodness will be able to pass through freely.

Moon Banishment Spell
Spell Date: Thursday, December 29, 2016
Now and then, we all have a suspicion that somebody is being dishonest and trying to deceive us. The new moon is a great time for dealing with the unseen and also for banishment magick. Here is a spell that is perfectly designed to harness these characteristics of the new moon.
Print an image of the Moon card from the tarot. (Don’t use an actual tarot card; the image will be destroyed!) On the back of the printed image, write a petition of intention to banish all unseen deception being perpetrated against you, harming none, for the highest good, and be sure to sign it. In your fireplace or a fire-safe cauldron or bowl, ritually burn the image and exclaim:
“Power of the Moon, I ask thee, please banish all deception perpetrated against me. May it be for the highest good. Blessed be!”

Tarot Polarity Spell for Prosperity
Spell Date: Wednesday, December 28, 2016
For this prosperity spell, gather the following items:
* A cauldron
* A green candle
* Incense composed of equal parts sage and cinnamon
* The tarot cards Seven of Pentacles, Five of Pentacles, and Ace of Pentacles
* A paper and pen
Place the Seven of Pentacles in front of the cauldron, the Five of Pentacles to the left, and the Ace of Pentacles to the right. The left card represents the negative polarity (poverty), and the right card represents the extreme positive (wealth), with the middle card showing financial stability (the goal). On the paper, draw a dollar sign (the symbol of money), and set the paper on the middle card.
Light the candle and incense in the cauldron. Raise power to charge the cards and paper. To focus the intent, say:
“Prosperity, now come to me; abundance, manifest. So mote it be.”
Light the paper in the candle, dropping it into the cauldron over the incense to release the spell.

JOLLY HOT COCOA
Inspired by Half Baked Harvest
Makes approximately 5 cups/40 ounces
1 can lite coconut milk (approx. 13 ounces)
1 can regular coconut milk (approx. 13 ounces)
1/2 cup heavy cream
6 ounces good quality dark chocolate, chopped coarsely (I used Scharffen Berger)
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
2 tablespoons sugar
pinch of salt
seeds of 1 vanilla bean, or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 ounces Bailey’s or Kahlua (optional)
Toppings (optional): Dahlia Kitchen’s vanilla bean marshmallows or whipped cream
In medium pot, bring both types of coconut milk and heavy cream to a simmer over medium heat. Whisk nearly continuously to prevent burning.
Once your milk begins to simmer, remove from heat and vigorously whisk in dark chocolate until fully melted.
When chocolate is fully incorporated, add cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and vanilla. If using, pour Bailey’s or Kahlua in last. Serve in a festive mug, of course!
To reheat, put pot back on stove and turn on low. OR, try this chilled! It is delicious!

Heartwings Love Notes 757 A New Year, A New Beginning
Heartwings says, “Each and every day we are given a new beginning.”
When I look out of my window in the morning after a fresh snowfall, the gleaming white expanse seems like a new beginning. The crusty, trampled, slightly soiled snow beneath is hidden from sight. Everything looks fresh, ready to be inscribed with the present. A new beginning is a blank sheet of paper, a bed newly made with clean sheets, the first breath of air I take when I walk out of my door. A new beginning is a wonderful opportunity.
However, beneath the newly fallen snow are the remnants of the snows that fell days before. They lurk there like the mistakes, the mishaps, the opportunities not taken and the regret for all that remains undone. A new beginning must also take into account what has gone before. Mistakes and misses can be useful if I am willing to learn from them. If I am not, they remain like the old mounds of snow banks–freshly covered but still obvious in any parking lot.
The old year now past holds both failures and successes. I need to take these into account as I do my rituals to begin the New Year. What are my expectations? My resolutions, my hopes and dreams for the next twelve months to come. Realistically I must base them partly on what has been as well as what I hope will be. The trick is not to limit myself by any failures nor be overly egotistical about any successes.
I have always enjoyed my New Year’s Day rituals. I try to do a little of whatever I hope to be doing for the next year: corresponding with friends, calling family, writing a poem, cooking, and other activities that I enjoy. In addition I make two resolutions. Like most I haven’t always kept them. Still I keep hoping. My favorite activity on New Year’s Day is to look back, to see how far I have come, and to plan for the future. Each year brings its share of joys and sorrows, regrets and triumphs; I welcome them all.
May your New Year bring you joy as well as much for which to be grateful.
Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert
Harry and Bess had just been given a tour of Happy Endings, Central Mass’s new high tech cemetery. Harry was impressed with the view: no large tombstones or statuary. Beyond the pond was a golf course and clubhouse reserved exclusively for the kin of those interred.
Ralph, the salesman sat across from them into his office.
Harry gestured. “What’s par for the seventh hole?”
“Arnold Palmer himself designed it for us,” Ralph slid in. “Par four.”
Hearing this, Harry was sold.
Ralph smiled to himself, envisioning the signed contract.
“You folks have any questions?
“Yes,” Bess said. “Why aren’t there any tombstones? Is everyone here an indigent?”
“Quite the contrary, Madam,” Ralph chuckled. “Only those with the finest credentials are interred here at Happy Endings.”
“And why aren’t there any religious statues?” She persisted.
“Old fashioned monuments are outdated and environmentally unfriendly. Ralph placed a small dome shaped object on his desk. “Just press this.”
Bess did. A soft blue light emanated, and then: “Hello dear ones,” an older woman’s voice said. “Your father and I are so glad you’re visiting us today. And Bonnie, I hope you’ve finally done with Frank! Such a lowlife! How dare you for ever having brought him into our family.”
“And Jimmy,” a sagacious older male voice said. “Stop with the shoplifting already and find yourself a decent therapist.”
Bess rolled her eyes. “Why how is that possible? Talking to the children that way?”
Ralph nodded wisely. “Once you’re all signed up then you and Harry will visit our recording studio and share up to ten minutes of personal sound bytes.” He nodded knowingly. “Those ways your family will know you’re continually looking out for their best interests.”
He went into his closer. “So instead of the old fashioned cumbersome tombstone, we offer these exclusive highly personal environment friendly smart domes.” He looked directly at Bess.
“As you can see they’re eminently attractive plus you can choose your own special color emanation.”
“I’m not so sure,” Bess frowned. “Not that I wouldn’t be tempted to leave a few well chosen last words for our daughter Shirley.”
“Leave Shirley alone,” Harry said. “Let the poor kid lead her own life and find her own way.”
Ralph knew that at times like this is was best to remain silent and not to interfere.
Bess peered out at the sea of glowing domes. “And isn’t it kinda clausphobic everyone being buried so close to each other? What if I don’t like the person next to me? I don’t think I’d go for that.” She wrinkled her nose.
Ralph nodded. He had dealt with customer resistance before. “Only the best citizenry here at Happy Endings. That, madam I can assure you.”
Bess looked at Harry and frowned. “You like this whole idea don’t you? And you never liked leaving the house for fear of missing company. How could you be happy here? Being buried so far away from home next to people you never met?”
“It doesn’t really matter,” Harry said dryly. He looked out over the rich lawns and putting greens.
Picking up on his nostalgia Ralph plodded on. “And of course with interment comes a lifetime membership to your designated next of kin. All clubhouse, pool and green fees covered.” He smiled.
“I really don’t like the idea of perfect strangers walking all over me once I’m dead,” Bess fussed. “I think I’d prefer a more old fashioned granite stone, maybe one with an angel carved on it.”
“Yes,” the salesman agreed. “But I must warn you both that perpetual care in those everyday cemeteries is a pretty expensive proposition. And in your gated high end cemeteries it costs many thousands annually just for the mowing and stone polishing. That doesn’t include semiannual plantings, gravel, fresh flowers and of course snow removal.” He looked directly at Bess. “Frankly madam you don’t strike me as a woman who’d want her final resting place to appear shabby.”
“I don’t care about all that,” Harry said. He was leafing through the beautifully illustrated color catalogue showing the golf course and the clubhouse interiors.
“I don’t know, Harry,” Bess said. “I’d like to be buried next to my sister Lucile.” She looked at Ralph. “I’m very fond of her.”
Harry sniffed disapprovingly. “Personally I always thought your sister Lucile talked too much. “I’d rather rest here with a nice view of the driving range.”
“You know I always hated golf!” Bess’s voice began to shrill. “Well Mr. Hole in One, you go right ahead. Be buried here next to some fortune hunter for all I care. See what stunts she pulls on you in the hereafter. You never appreciated my practical common sense anyway.”
Harry got upset. “You’re lucky your sister Lucile wasn’t arrested on a morals charge. I’ll never forget those trashy outfits she wore to family Memorial Day cookouts.”
Ralph peered discretely at his watch.”
“I’m in,” Harry said decisively. He pointed at the catalogue. “I want my dome to blink bright red and I’ll sign the papers right now.”
“Oh no you won’t!” Bess exclaimed. She stood and grabbed Harry’s arm. Wide-eyed, Ralph watched her start to drag Harry out the door. “I’d rather we were launched into outer space than buried here,” “At least then maybe we’d have a view of the stars instead of people playing golf. I don’t even like golf Whenever I tried to hit the ball it would always fall off that silly wooden thing.”
“But supposing that spaceship blew up.” Harry said. “We’d become tiny particles exploded to kingdom come. Exposed to all that space radiation. Knowing how particular you are I expect you wouldn’t like that.”
“No,” Bessie agreed. “It’s wouldn’t.”
He turned and smiled at Ralph. “Let us know when you’re having a half price sale. My wife can’t resist s a bargain.”

Bitter feelings allow us to become perfect victims in that we no longer feel obliged to work toward healing.
It is natural to feel resentment or anger when life does not unfold as expected. We consciously or unconsciously anticipated one experience, and we grieve for the loss of it when the universe puts something else in our path. Most of the time, we work through these feelings and they pass. Occasionally, our anger and resentment do not fade and are instead transformed into bitterness. Bitter feelings allow us to become perfect victims in that we no longer feel obliged to work toward healing and choose instead to identify with our pain. Yet as unwholesome as bitterness can be, it is also a natural element of our emotional palette. When we acknowledge that it is okay to feel bitter, we reconnect with our hurt in a constructive way and can begin the process of working through it.
The nature of bitterness is rooted in the fact that the pain we feel provides us with a rationale. We may feel that we deserve to embrace our bitterness to its full extent. And to be bitter is, in essence, to cut ourselves off from all that is positive, hardening our hearts and vowing never to let go of our hurt. But just as bitter feelings can be self-defeating, so too can the release of bitterness be life-affirming in a way that few other emotional experiences are. When we decide that we no longer want to be bitter, we are reborn into a world filled with delight and fulfillment unlike any we knew while in the clutches of bitterness. The veil it cast over our lives is lifted, letting light and warmth touch our souls.
Divesting yourself of bitter feelings can be as simple as truly forgiving and moving on. Even when your bitterness has no concrete object, you can forgive situations too. Healing pain can be challenging but may be easier if you remind yourself that you are the only entity truly affected by your emotional state. In time, you will discover that letting go of your bitterness frees you to initiate the healing process and allows you to once again celebrate the possibility of the more wonderful life you deserve.
Practices for Meditation
~The Reflecting Pond~
Meditations will have a profound effect on your life for the better. When harnessed correctly it can have an enormous effect on the course of your life and those around you. Meditational practices have a deeply relaxing effect on the mind and body, promoting a sense of physical well being and emotional harmony. Further, techniques can be used to awaken your spiritual and magical self. Witches use meditative exercises in a variety of ways such as to explore their minds and surroundings, to effect healing (both for themselves and others), and to aid the effectiveness of magic. Over the coming lessons we will show you how you too can do these things.
For those of you who have never meditated before the following section will provide you with a few guidelines before you begin:
Try to set aside a ten to twenty minute space every day at the same time or at least the same part of the day. If you are really too busy then the minimum amount of time that will work is ten to twenty minutes twice a week. Don’t cut down the amount of time of each session, however, as it is hard to be effective in less than the recommended time. We suggest for the first week that you practice “The Tree” meditation before “the Pentagram”, this is because it is an important exercise in grounding. Don’t be discouraged if your first efforts feel clumsy and forced, practice makes perfect and before long you will have begun to master both.
Try to find a space where you won’t be disturbed and somewhere that is warm and comfortable. For some of you this may mean negotiating with your family. Remember that you are entitled to some time for yourself.
Leave the phone off the hook.
Meditating either lying or sitting down is fine. Don’t try to meditate lying down late at night though as you may find yourself nodding off.
Wear comfortable clothing if possible. At least loosen belts and ties or undo the top button of your jeans.
Soft light is best for meditation so turn the main light off and use a lamp or preferably a candle.
Some people find relaxing music helps induce a meditative state, whilst others find it too much of a distraction. Experimentation will help you create the right ambience.
Breathing patterns are an easy way of calming and relaxing oneself. Don’t be tempted to skip the breathing part of a meditation. Once in the process of visualization don’t stress if you are not following the pattern any more. Just concentrate on the mind’s view.
It’s strongly recommended to keep a journal in which to record your experiences and impressions that you receive. Some witches have one book that they use for personal record of meditations, dreams and so on, sometimes referred to as a Book of Mirrors, and another, known as a Book of Shadows, that they record rituals and ceremonies, invocations and prayers in. Some witches simply merge the two and incorporate both meditation and ritual work in one volume. What format these books will be in very much depends on the individual witch and everything from a plain A4 notepad to a beautifully illuminated, leather bound work of art is find. the important thing is to keep a record.
Read through the meditation a couple of times before you begin so that you know what you will be meditating on.
This can be used before any meditation work is begun:
From beneath me arises the energy of the Earth, my home and my foundation.
From above me pours down the light of the Sun and the enchanting Moon.
To my right hand flows the strength to control and direct, the power of magick.
To my left hand comes the skill to divine and to heal, the source of blessing.
Before me arises the perfected one I strive to become, my magickal true self.
Behind me falls the one I was, and with it my discarded failures.
Around me circle the eternal stars, lamps of wisdom in the deeps of space.
Within me grows the flame of life, the light of experience and understanding.
Some Further Thoughts on Meditation
Many people find meditation to be very difficult for some period of time, even the most able witches have struggled at first. Here are some pointers:
Start small. At first the mind will wander, most people can’t go for even five seconds at first but once you can do 5 seconds you will be able to do 10 and so on.
Be gentle on yourself, think of your mind as a wayward child. It will learn the most amazing things but you must be patient and treat it with love.
During the first stages give it a couple of tries during a session. One hour is too much. You wouldn’t push a child to do something for that long, so don’t push your brain. It will only rebel… Three to five minutes meditative at first is plenty.
You have learned to talk, read and write. All extremely complex difficult tasks. These took years to learn. Meditation is the same; it takes a lot of time and the careful building of skills. But if you stick with it you will be amazed by what you can do.
