Today’s Goddess:  Lan Caihe
Chrysanthemum Day (China/Japan)

Themes:  Longevity; Nature
Symbols:  Flowers; Flute

About Lan Caihe: The Buddhist patroness of florists or anyone who enjoys making things grow,
this Goddess often walked the streets playing flute music.  Her name means “red-footed genius,”
alluding to a strong connection with the earth and rich soil.

To Do Today:  Around this time of year, people in China drink chrysanthemum wine for longevity
and wisdom, eat chrysanthemum petals in salads, and enjoy a plethora of flower displays throughout
the land.  If anyone in your neighborhood grows chrysanthemums, definitely try a few petals tossed
with a green salad and lemon juice.  Consume Lan Caihe’s green thumb and internalize her awareness
of earth directly!

Since it’s September, take a leisurely walk today and enjoy people’s gardening efforts.  This honors
Lan Caihe and allows you to revel in this goddess’s artistry firsthand.  If you can’t walk around because
of bad weather, send yourself a bouquet filled with Lan Caihe’s abundance.  When it arrives at work or
home, it bears this goddess’s energy within.

Finally, get out and work with the land in some way today.  Plant a little hanging flower arrangement.
Weed your lawn or garden.  Lan Caihe will reward your efforts with a growing connection to earth
and its greenery.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies – The Magic of Storytelling
When I was a boy living on my grandparent’s farm, each day my family would gather near the orchard after the day’s work was done. This was story time, and as dusk settled over the fields, my grandmother spun her tale. Perhaps it would be about the spirit that lived in the pumpkin patch, or the bluebirds living in the fencepost—the subject didn’t matter. I was always mesmerized. As summer ends, and our activities turn toward hearth and home, storytelling is a wonderful family activity we can use to practice togetherness. Create stories that aren’t scary, but do include friendly magical beings in your tales. With each tale you tell, you carry on magical tradition. Remember: Much of the magical lore we use today was passed down to us in orally told stories.

Anniversary Reactions to Disaster and Trauma
by Suzanne Zilber, Ph.D. Student Counseling Service, Iowa State University

Anniversary reactions are a re-experiencing of a traumatic event that occurs because of a time
cue. A time cue can be anything that was associated with the time the trauma occurred, from
the season of the year, to a specific day. It may be a particular smell in the air, or events that
occur regularly at that same time. During these times, feelings about the traumatic event can
come up and be almost as strong as they were right after the event. The media focus on the
anniversary of the September 11 attacks will offer many visual and other cues to remind us of
what occurred and what we felt, increasingly the likelihood of anniversary reactions.

Anniversary reactions may include feeling jittery, sad, angry, impatient, panicky, and having negative
dreams or images intrude on you. You may feel generally fatigued and be having difficulty
concentrating, sleeping, and eating normally. It is important not to judge yourself or others if you
or they are experiencing these normal reactions. The tips for coping with these reactions are the same
as for when you have just experienced a trauma:

Physical: Normalizing disrupted patterns
· Try to sleep regular hours
· Eat a balanced diet at regular intervals – even if you are not hungry, eat a little at each mealtime
· Exercise moderately each day. A brisk walk will do.
· Seek medical attention if stress is making an existing medical condition worse.

Emotional/Spiritual: Managing our feelings
· create a schedule of study and recreation and stick to it
· be choiceful about your exposure to the media
· talk about your feelings
· reach out to family and friends
· recognize that thoughtful people of goodwill may have different opinions from yours
· express yourself creatively (singing, dancing, cooking)
· do something fun; laughing at serious times is OK
· escape in healthy ways (exercise, movies, games NOT overeating or abusing drugs or alcohol)
· pray or meditate
· seek out religious or spiritual communities
· avoid making major life decisions at this time
· seek support groups or counselors if you continue to feel distressed

“The Goddess Companion”
The Goddess made the world with her needle.
First she embroidered the moon,
and then the shining stars,
and then the fine sun and
the warm clouds beneath.
Then the wet pines in the forest,
the pines with wild animals beneath,
then the shining waves of the sea,
the shining waves with fishes beneath.
Thus the Goddess embroidered
the world. The world flowered
from the swift needle of the Goddess.
~Northern Russian Folksong

Our work in this world is to create. And we do. We create constantly, for every action we
take is fresh, something that has never previously been seen in the world. Whenever we
claim that we are not creative, we deny the most important fact of our existence. For each
conversation that we have, each meal we prepare, each letter we write, each load of laundry
that we do – these things have never been done in exactly the same way before. Creativity?
There is nothing but creativity in this world, which renews itself constantly, perpetually.

The Goddess is an image of that endless natural creativity. The world that we see was not created,
all in one piece, at the beginning of time. No, the Goddess re-creates it daily. And in our own way
we, too, re-create our world. Each action we take sustains a pattern or breaks it. Each word we
speak reinforces things as they are, or moves toward change. Often we act and speak unconsciously,
unaware of our power. What would life be like if we were awake in each moment?

About The Morning Feast and – The teachings here are based on ordinary magick, the principle that the mundane and the Divine are not separate, but peacefully coexist in all things. Know Mother Earth as the ultimate healer, and learn to utilize her gifts of nature. Inside each woman is a being of wisdom, deeply connected to the phases of the moon and the tides of the sea. All we need to do is trust our innate wisdom.
