The Year Is Divided Into Four Seasons:
The first season is of a frigid complexion, and this is “Winter”;
The second is of the complexion of Air, and this is “Spring”;
Then follows the third, which is “Summer”, and is of the complexion of Fire;
Lastly, there is the fourth, wherein fruits are matured, which is “Autumn”.

August is the Month of the Full Sturgeon Moon.

Some Native American tribes (Algonquin) knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this full Moon. They also called this the Full Green Corn Moon.

Different tribes had different Moon name preferences. Other examples for August are: Wheat Cut Moon (San Ildefonso, and San Juan), or “Moon When All Things Ripen” (Dakotah Sioux) or “Blueberry Moon” (Ojibway).

A Seed Thought

Eagle Vision by Boulet

In our desire to bring forth the fruitfulness of our souls, sometimes we end up wearing ourselves out and taking on so many things that we feel overwhelmed. Being overwhelmed makes it very difficult to listen to the still, small voice within, or pick up on the messages that the Universe leaves for us to follow. Try this advice of the guiding spirit White Eagle. “When your tasks seem a little heavy and overwhelming remember to do one thing at a time quietly, and leave the rest because the rest is not your job. What you cannot get through you must hand back to God and She will work it out for you.”

Prayer/Practice
Great Spirit, thank you for the dawning of another summer morning. I dedicate all my activities today to you and to the benefit of my family, my clan, my nation and all beings. I will work diligently, mindfully and joyfully with the awareness that any tasks remaining undone are Yours, not mine. I will offer them to You in faith that You will work them out in accord with the highest good.

Meditate outside today if you can, sitting on the earth. Do the meditation on bridging heaven on earth.

The Hearty Bellow

We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams.”

I almost hate to use the word, spirituality.

It sounds much too serious and imposing.

Sometimes when I think of spirituality I think of a sweet, beatific smile, angelic in nature, looking upwards to the heavens.

I like the hearty bellow of a robust laugh, the joy of action, and the stillness of contemplation all somehow the same, an energy that moves in the world,
coming from the depths of quiet, peace, and love, and exploding outward in the gusto of life.

The spirit is in all things manifesting all ways. That’s how exciting the divine dance is.

Crystals To Stop The Worry!

Worry and pensiveness are emotions most associated with the late Summer, early Fall season, according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine paradigm.  Worry can only serve you well if you worry and recognize that a plan of action is needed, in a stressful situation and then you act on it.

Sympathy and nurturing are traits that make up an earth personality, but excessive worry becomes a state of restlessness and agitation, producing mental uneasiness, foreshadowing, anxiety, and painful uncertainty. The “what if” syndrome is a constant pattern that is played out in the mind of someone who worries too much. The emotional aspect of earth can carry a deep sense of emptiness. This tends to make worry or over thinking even worse. This downward spiral creates a destructive behavior that makes the earth personality seek out constant reassurance and a sense of neediness. Worry is a destroyer of the soul. Left unchecked, worry lends itself to hysteria.

Every system in your body is affected by worry. It affects the respiratory system and aggravates asthma. Since the lungs are related to the skin, it affects the skin by causing rash, itching or hives. It affects the circulatory system raising blood pressure, increasing blood clotting and your risk of heart attack and stroke. Muscle tension can lend itself to headaches, back and body aches. Of course, the related organ, the spleen and stomach, will increase stomach acid, affects your intestines and can lead to stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas or heartburn. Since much of the immune system is apart of the digestive tract, there is growing evidence that suggests chronic worry can compromise your immune system, making you more vulnerable to bacteria, viruses, and perhaps even cancer.

Stop The Worry

1. Worry is a viscous cycle that you create. Stop the mental chatter. Think about something else.

2. Get active in something else: Do volunteer work, clean the house, interact with a charity, church or community group.

3. Work with those less fortunate: This often shows you how lucky and grateful you should really be.

4. Issues of control: need to be let go of. “I trust that everything will work itself out the way it should be”. This should be your mantra. Trust can be a powerful and giving action. “Everything will be okay”!

5. Talk Therapy: whether it is with your best friend, a therapist of a perfect stranger, sometimes expressing your concerns is all you need to get it out and on the table.

6. Do something you enjoy: preferably with a friend. Someone who can show you reality. A friend can ground you and show you the fun you are lacking and the worry, which consumes you.

7. Exercise: is one of the best ways to push through stress, anxiety and will make you sweat, burn calories and improve feelings of depression.

8. Calm your mind: by doing some deep breathing, yoga or meditation. Close your eyes and put your mind into a tranquil, peaceful setting that allows you to wander and invite a sense of serenity.

9. Know the difference between a situation over which you have control and one over which you have no control. This will make all the difference in how you handle something.

10. Let go: If you have done all that you can do to rectify your situation, it is time to leave it in greater hands. The Universe truly takes care of your needs. You simply have to ALLOW this to happen.

Crystals for Worry

Pensiveness precedes worry. Any activity that involves a lot of mental effort will run the risk of causing disharmony, in turn causing worry and resulting in fatigue, lethargy, and inability to concentrate. Worry can only serve you well if you worry and recognize that a plan of action is needed, in a stressful situation and then you act on it. If you have trouble acting on it, consider these crystals for assistance:

Amber is a valuable resin, useful in treating pensiveness, which leads to excessive worry. It is for those who physically manifest worry into stomach anxiety and central nervous system disorders.

Citrine reduces anxiety, fear and depression. It is invigorating and positive. Develops inner calm and security and makes us less sensitive and more open to constructive criticism. Can dispel negative feelings and help us to accept the flow of events. Eases digestion and stomach tension from worry.

Heulandite is a stone used when dealing with small, annoying worries or troublesome details that agitate you. It helps to neutralize distressing thoughts.

Smoky Quartz helps to alleviate fear, anxiety and associated emotional depression. This “anchor stone” moderates worry, exhaustion and mood swings.

Magickal Moon Lore

All hail to thee, Queen of heaven!
Thou showest two horns to mark six days,
And on the seventh will divide thy crown in two.
On the fourteenth day, turn thy full face unto us.

Seven is the Moon’s mystic number, because each one of its four phases is completed in seven days.

Nineteen is a sacred number in Old Irish and Celtic Lore, for the sequence of Moon phases within a single zodiac sign is repeated every 19 years.

The Mansions of the Moon, abodes of the soul, refer to the position of the Moon at noon on each of the 28 days in a lunar month.

Bow to the new Moon, especially the first new Moon of the year, as a sign of respect. It is courting disaster to point at the Moon at any time. Turn a silver coin in your purse or pocket at the first sight of the new Moon to gain luck.

It is bad luck to see the new Moon for the first time on your left, or behind you, or through the branches of a tree. A new Moon on Saturday means foul weather. A full Moon on Sunday brings bad luck and toilers of the sea should not set sail.

The Roman astrologers of classical times considered the Moon sign of a horoscope to be of far greater significance than the Sun sign.

Marsilioi Ficino, the Florentine philosopher of the Renaissance, defined the planetary image of the spirit of the Moon as an archer riding a doe, a huntress with bows and arrows, a little boy, a goose, or a single arrow.

Diana, Goddess of the Moon and Patroness of Witches, was regarded as a demon by the early Christians.

Waxing: as the size of the Moon increases, its form takes the shape of the capital letter D: D for Daring. This marks a time for creativity, expansion, and development. You may glance up at the sky in the late afternoon to see the pale waxing half Moon beckoning. Later on as darkness falls, it shines like a beacon of hope in the west, raising your spirits and assuring the success of your ventures.

Waning: rising later night after night, the Moon diminishes in size, now assuming the form of the letter C: C for Caring. The time has come to relax, restore energy, and quietly dispel negative influences in your life. Banish fear, unworthy desires, and selfish motivations as the Moon wanes.

The Many Benefits of Tea

Technically, “tea” is only tea if it comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. All tea, whether it’s black, white, green, oolong or pu-erh, comes form this plant. It’s the processing that distinguishes different types of tea.

Black Tea

Black tea, the most common, is the basis for many types of tea. Several manufacturers of iced tea use black tea. It’s made from fermented and cured tea leaves. It has the highest caffeine content of any of the teas. Along with the other teas, it contains polyphenols, antioxidants that help protect the body against free radicals – those that can cause cancer and other ailments. Black tea also helps to inhibit bacterial growth in the mouth, slowing down the formation of plaque. Drink your tea black if you’re using it for this purpose. Sugar helps bacteria grow, as well as the acid condition that lemons contribute to.

Green Tea

Green tea is made from steamed leaves. It is the highest in EGCG, one of the catechins (a type of antioxidant), that helps with weight loss. Green tea also helps to remove radiation from the body which makes it great for those on cancer treatment. It also contains micro nutrients that will help the body when stressed. There is still caffeine in green tea, but not as much as in black tea. I don’t care for the taste of green tea, which is kind of blah. Add lemon or stevia to perk it up, or like i did today, smash a few blackberries in it. You can also get the benefits of green tea from capsules or tinctures.

White Tea

White tea is the most mild of all the teas. It is made from the uncured, unfermented tips of the camellia tea plant. Like bean sprouts, the tips contain all the enzymes, vitamins and minerals that the plant needs to survive, but in a concentrated form. It is also the most concentrated in the cancer fighting EGCG. Steep white tea for only a few minutes or it will become bitter.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is partially fermented leaves of the tea plant. It’s said to be a cross between black and green tea. Some like the taste, some don’t. It combines the benefits of both types of tea.

Pu-erh Tea

Pu-erh is fairly new to the Western world, but has been consumed for centuries. It is fermented and aged for a period of time, giving it a stronger flavor. It is a type of black tea that is pressed into cakes. From there it is brewed for a short time.

Herbal Teas

So if teas from the Camillia sinensis plant are the only true teas, what are herbal teas? Ok, they are not technically teas, but are often called so. Herbal teas are really tisanes, if steeped for a few minutes, or decoctions if simmered and left to rest. Herbal teas, and we’ll call them that here, have benefits all their own. Here are a few of the more popular ones:

~Chamomile is great for stomach ailments and can help you sleep.
~Passion Flower is also calming and can help you sleep.
~Hops and Lemon Balm are also great sleep aids.
~Valerian can help you sleep, but has a noxious smell. It’s recommended taking this as a capsule not as a tea.
~Ginger is anti-inflammatory, about the same as an aspirin, and can help with joints, such as with arthritis. It is also great for nausea as it help calm the stomach. It is also warming.
~Licorice root can help to regulate blood sugar and add sweetness without calories.
~Nettle tea contains antihistamines. It can help combat hay fever and allergies. It also contains many vitamins and minerals.
~Peppermint can help combat constipation. It can help improve memory and alertness. It has been used by some for nausea and headaches, like migraines. Try chocolate mint or citrus mint for a change.
~Lemon Balm is also antiviral and can help fight illnesses. I used it last year to help fight a respiratory tract infection.
~Ginseng is an adaptogen. It helps the body to deal with whatever life throws at it. It can also help improve circulation, which can help with sexual dysfunction.

Other Notes on Tea

We have to remember that although tea has been consumed for thousands of years in the East and has been used for many purposes, we are not doctors and should not try to diagnose or treat any serious illness. While drinking tea may not cure your ills, it certainly will help you feel better!

If you are using bagged tea and are concerned about caffeine, soak the tea bag for 30 seconds in hot water, then throw that water out. (I add it to my compost.) Over 80% of the caffeine is released in the first 30 seconds. Then, go ahead with a second cup of hot water, steeping for 3-5 minutes. You might get a reduced taste, but you’ll get much less caffeine. Ever wonder why commercially decaffeinated teas taste weaker? Now you know why!

Good news – tea is hydrating! It is now thought that the caffeine in tea is not as dehydrating as once believed. It has been found to improve kidney and liver function and help combat symptoms of bladder infections.

A Delicious Tea Drink – 3 Ways

Here is a great tea recipe. You can make it iced or hot, or as I do, frozen.

Ingredients

¼ cup holy basil, dried
¼ cup lemon balm or lemon grass, dried
¼ cup plantain or nettle leaves, dried
1 tsp stevia leaves, dried – use more or less to taste

Directions

Mix all of the above ingredients together, making sure all of the leaves are crushed. Store in an airtight container.

For hot tea: Using a tea ball or make your own tea bags with the mixture. Steep 1 teaspoon in a cup of hot water for 5 minutes. Remove tea ball or tea bag and drink hot.

For iced tea: Use 2 teaspoons and brew longer, until it is fairly strong. Remove tea ball or tea bag, allow to cool a bit and pour over ice.

For frozen tea: Brew strong and allow to cool. Pour into a glass cake pan. freeze for an hour or so. Take a fork and flake up the ice crystals. Freeze another 30 minutes and flake again. After repeating this a few times it should be a consistency you like. Serve in a chilled sundae cup.

Spell to Dispel Negativity

This spell, if properly applied, will dispel negativity, break curses, and add protection—and so is essential for sensitive Witches. To start, get a green candle, some real or fake ivy, a green fruit such as pear or apple, and a bell. Cut the fruit in four pieces. Arrange the ivy. Place the slices of fruit in the four directions. Light the flame. Face north and chant:

By the powers of the northern light,
I break any negativity in my life.

Ring the bell, and allow it to resonate. Face south, and say:

By the powers of the southern side, strong I am.
Let my powers rise.

Face east, saying:

By the powers of the eastern Sun,
I face my fears and watch them run.

Face west, and say:

By the powers of the western night,
I break any curse. It takes flight.

Snuff out the fire, take a breath, and eat the fruit.

The Goddess Way through the 12 Steps

The Goddess Way through the 12 Steps: 12 Rituals of Light and Love
by Amethyst Star (Author), Shahla Coyote (Contributor), Baba Mecka (Contributor)

Some background:

We began our rituals in January, 2012 for Step One.  Each month we did a ritual for the corresponding step. The rituals were equally written by each of us.  We created each ritual so it was an action of love coming from all of us. Here is a quick introduction for our book.

Peace and harmony are the cornerstones of our 12-Step rituals. Amethyst Star and I (Shahla Coyote) have been friends for many years.  They met Baba Mecka a few years ago. We each realized that something was missing, something that could make the steps more viable in our lives. We all follow the Goddess path and wanted to write rituals for each step. It has been a labor of love and has allowed us to get closer to the Spirit Goddess.  The three of us came together to go through each of the steps to cement with action and ritual our growth in sobriety. Our higher power includes goddesses, so it seemed natural to use ritual and different goddesses to express creatively each step in recovery.

We used the Open Steps and these rituals are not set in stone.  If you feel that a different stone or god/goddess expresses more clearly your intention, by all means change the ritual to be a clear expression of yourself. Honor your sobriety by being true to what feels right to you.  These rituals express an inward pull to grow in love and spirituality.

We began brainstorming the possibility of creating rituals for each of the 12 Steps. Each one of these rituals has been a beautiful way to express our commitment to that step.  They have healed us in ways we can’t even begin to describe in our journey in recovery.  Making the Goddess path part of our recovery has been profound.  This book has truly been a labor of light and love. We hope you enjoy it and the wonderful things that may materialize as a result of these rituals.

High Priestess Training and Community

Welcome to a journey of the shamanistic powers of the female, the Wisewomen. Wisewomen have existed for thousands of years and still exist throughout the world. They know Mother Earth as the ultimate healer, and have learned to utilize the gifts of of nature. Inside each woman is a being of wisdom, deeply connected to the phases of the moon and the tides of the sea. All we need to do is trust our innate wisdom.

“Part of the ancient vision of the Goddess was as protector of cities and the sustaining fields around them. She was not, in this role, always a matronly and maternal goddess, but was frequently depicted as a lusty, loving, sensual woman. The power she wielded did not make her any less sexually vibrant. Indeed, her power was part of her erotic attraction.”

“The queens and goddesses of myth and legend show us an image of both strength and sensuousness. While today we often equate women’s sexuality with weakness and passivity, our forebears saw such goddesses as Ishtar as especially passionate and sexual because of their power. Ishtar and her sister goddesses are potent images of feminine possibility – a possibility that remains despite the 2,500 years that have passed since she was last worshipped.” (“The Goddess Companion”, Patricia Monaghan)

Shamanism refers to a range of traditional beliefs and practices concerned with communication with the spirit world. The feminine form of the word is not “shamaness” but “shamanka”, however, here we will use the word “Priestess”.

Healing,  gathering and growing herbs and food, keeping communities in balance, presiding over ceremonies and rites of passage, maintaining relations with the dead, teaching, ministering to those in need, communing with nature to learn her secrets ,preserving the wisdom traditions, divining the future, and drumming and dancing with Goddesses, these are feminine shamanic arts.  This what you will learn or remember in our classes here!

Sisters of The Burning Branch, is our part of the “shaman’s tree”, an image found in several cultures as a symbol for mediation.  The tree is seen as a being whose roots belong to the world underneath; its trunk belongs to the middle, human-inhabited world; and its top is related to the upper world.

The curriculum of Sisters of the Burning Branch, is eclectic, borrowed from the teachings of many paths, but rooted in Women’s Spirituality.

Priestess Training takes a year and day to complete, plus 3 months to earn the High Priestess cord. (four levels). We do ask for your commitment when joining. Please do not sign up if you are not committed or able to follow through. There is nothing worse for your self esteem!  We try to nurture here, this defeats that purpose.

At GoddessSchool we use song and chants to raise power, using drums, tambourines or just humming along works too! We celebrate the Mother – the Full Moon – Mother Earth – Mother Nature – she is in us all – we are in her – we are one! We will learn some songs, beat the drums, howl at the Moon! We are ever changing as does the Moon – Feel the Moon – let her fill you up! Join us!

The entire fee for each level is $120 (payment plan available), sixteen lessons in each level, except the last. Tuition covers lessons,  assignments and instructor feedback. In addition, students may download guided meditation exercises and be eligible for face to face Sabbats, Esbats and retreats with the Sisterhood.
