In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

Readings by GrannyMoon ~ Priestess of Swords

Clarity – Perhaps this week finds you writing a speech, a story, working on a debate, or spreading the news. You can talk science with the scientists, history with the historians, literature with the poets, but beware of the critical mind and the sharp word, it truly can be mightier than the sword and more painful. Being judgmental will narrow your mind and heart and is detrimental to all involved.

Seasons of the Witch – Legends and Lore, Ancient Holidays
And Some Not So Ancient!

Today Is …

Day Dedicated to the Sea Goddess Ys of Brittany. Enjoy a swim or soak your feet in water. Put a little salt under your tongue in remembrance of Her.

Many folks still believe in this ancient superstition: if you make a secret wish wile looking up at the new moon (which normally begins on or near this date in August), your wish will be granted before the year is through.

Oyster Day – Londoners believe that if you eat an oyster today you will not want for money all year. This sentiment is expressed in the following rhyme from Hone’s Every-Day Book, published in 1829, which describes the mad dash to Billingsgate where the fish market was located:

Greengrocers rise at dawn of sun
August the fifth — come haste away
To Billingsgate the thousands run
To Oyster Day! To Oyster Day!

Actually in England, the legal close season for oysters was 15 June to 4 August so this was actually the day after oyster season closed. But the common saying is that one should never eat oysters in months without an R, which would include August, as well as June and July.

Blackburn, Bonnie & Leofranc Holford-Strevens, The Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford University Press 1999
Kightly, Charles, The Perpetual Almanack of Folklore, Thames & Hudson 1987

Brigg Fair – The date of a famous horse fair held in Lincolnshire, mentioned in the lovely folk song: Horse-racing was a common activity at Lammas, particularly in Ireland.

It was on the 5th of August
The weather fair and fine
Unto Brigg Fair
I did repair
For love I was inclined.

The Year Is Divided Into Four Seasons:
The first season is of a frigid complexion, and this is “Winter”;
The second is of the complexion of Air, and this is “Spring”;
Then follows the third, which is “Summer”, and is of the complexion of Fire;
Lastly, there is the fourth, wherein fruits are matured, which is “Autumn”.

Today’s Goddess:  Doris
Fairhope Jubilee (Alabama)

Themes: Abundance; Providence; Water
Symbols: Seawater; Plants; Animals (especially fish)

About Doris:  The daughter of Oceanus, this Grecian Sea Goddess is associated
with the sea’s gifts and its wealth.  She joins in today’s festivities by bringing an abundance
of seafood to nourish the body, as well as spiritual sustenance to fulfill our souls.

To Do Today:  The Fairhope Jubilee takes place in Mobile Bay, Alabama, sometime in August
when there’s an overcast sky, an easterly wind, and a rising tide.  When these three factors
are in place an odd phenomenon occurs:  bottom-dwelling fish get trapped between the shore
and low-oxygen water.  So people rush out with any containers they can find and gather up
Doris’s plenty!  For us, this equates to gathering up the sea’s plenty figuratively, perhaps by
having fish for dinner.  Remember to thank Doris as you eat so that you internalize her providence.

To make a Doris charm that will draw abundance into any area of your life in need, find a seashell,
a tumbled sea stone, or something similar that comes from the ocean.  Place the token in seawater
for three hours by a waxing moon so that abundance will grow like the moon.  Bless it, saying,

Carry the token regularly.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies – Dance of Fireflies Spell
With the dreamy heat of late summer and the soft shadows of the warm twilight comes one of the most magical sights of the year: the dance of the fireflies. These insects inhabit the border between magic and reality; scientists still don’t understand the secrets of their cool light. Do you remember chasing them as a child? Go outside tonight and watch them again. You may wish to greet them with something like this:

Firefly flicker,
Firefly glow,
Light up the sky and the world below.

Here on the shadowed stage you must play;
Your light is invisible by day.

In this you teach us to see,
That dark brings beauty with its mystery.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies – Use Your Socks to Repel Bugs

For a safe alternative to potentially harmful insecticides, place
three drops of peppermint, citronella, or eucalyptus essential oil on
your socks.  Mosquitoes and other bugs hate the smell of these oils.
Don’t apply essential oils to your favorite socks, as they can
stain.  Some EO’s may cause skin irritation, so avoid direct
contact.  Reapply the EO every two to three hours.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies – Elder’s Meditation of the Day – August 5

“It is a paradox in the contemporary world that in our desire for peace
we must willingly give ourselves to struggle.”–Linda Hogan, CHICKASAW

The Grandfathers have taught us about sacrifice. We have been taught to
pray for the people in a pitiful way. Struggle and conflict is neither
good nor bad, it just is. Everything that grows experiences conflict.
When the deer is born it is through conflict. When the seed first grows,
it is through conflict. Conflict precedes clarity. Everything has the
seasons of growth. Recognize – acknowledge – forgive and change. All of
these things are done through conflict.

Great Spirit, give me the courage today to see that struggle and conflict are here to teach me
lessons that are a gift from you.

“The Goddess Companion”

At the beginning of the world, I was.
Before there was an ocean, I was.
Before springs burst forth from the land, I was.
Before the mountains settled, before the hills were born, I was.
When there was neither lake nor land, I was.
When the heavens were not yet in their place, I was.
Before the ocean formed the horizon, before the ocean was yet
firm in its bed, before the earth’s foundation was stabilized, I was.
There I was, laughing and playing, as the world was formed.
~Proverbs 8:22-30

The Goddess is not a new invention, a contemporary concept that expresses modern women’s need for self-actualization. No, she is a primeval force that has been recognized for thousands of years, perhaps longer. There is some evidence suggesting that humans recognized the divine in female long before they invented a god who wore a male body.

How, then, did we lose her? She was, in fact, never lost. The cosmic or archetypal feminine remained with us, hidden in texts like that above, spoken by the biblical Wisdom and in images such as that of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the fairy-tale witch. Whether the Goddess exists beyond human minds, she is so deeply rooted in us that we will never be without her.

About The Morning Feast and – The teachings here are based on ordinary magick, the principle that the mundane and the Divine are not separate, but peacefully coexist in all things. Know Mother Earth as the ultimate healer, and learn to utilize her gifts of nature. Inside each woman is a being of wisdom, deeply connected to the phases of the moon and the tides of the sea. All we need to do is trust our innate wisdom.
