Upon the ferment of restless seas
You were born;
primordial as the sea.
Your realm is of pleasure and
the moment –ephemeral;
Your anger quick as a
summer storm and as quickly spent.
In loveliness of spirit all may
share in Your delight–
the Mystery is the ever loving Self–
Your flame burns bright in those
who love You–
Your rituals endure.
The silence of the dawn, and how it speaks to you.
In the Name of the Maiden: I will wear bright colors and think of myself as part of Your rainbow.
Thanks to The Bright Maiden for Thy care,
for green laughter and fire edged dew, and
for Thy blessing, a most precious jewel.

In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

Monday – Day of Emotions ( Day of the Moon )
Monday Magick Power Hours:
Moonrise. Key Words: Magick, dreams, health, love, home and family In the word Monday, we can see part of the word Moon. In the romance languages such as Italian or Spanish, this day of the week is called Lunes and clearly relates to the word lunar. On Mondays, a variety of magick may be worked.
Because Monday centers on the energies of the Moon, things like psychism, dreams, feminine energy, health, success in spiritual pursuits, domestic matters, and things of family origin are especially important this day.
Mondays are best for love magick and anything concerning home or family, thus old saying, Mondays child is fair of face, which seems clearly to relate to the themes of love and health.
Angels of Monday are Gabriel, Arcan, Missabu, and Abuzaha. Arcan is known as the king of the angels of air and the “ruler” of Monday. Abuzaha (Abuzohar) serves Monday, and is very responsive to invocations and ritual magick. Missabu is a ministering angel of Arcan.
Monday is the Best Day For: Conjurations, Predictions, Knowledge, Writing, Eloquence. Planetary Association: Moon Norse Deity Associated With the Day: Frigga Origin of Name: “Monday” is short for “Moon Day” in honor of the day’s alignment with that planetary body.

Seasons of the Witch – Legends and Lore, Ancient Holidays
And Some Not So Ancient!
Today Is …
Swaziland Festival of the She-Elephant. Feed the elephants at the zoo or place an elephant figurine on you altar.
Osiris: On this day, the birth of the vegetation- and fertility-god Osiris is celebrated by many Wiccans of the wiccan tradition.
The annual death and rebirth of Osiris personifies the self-renewing vitality and fertility of nature.
Japan: In the country of Japan, the annual Bon festival is celebrated on this date in honor of ancestral spirits.
1527: John Dee was born in London, England. He was renowned as an alchemist and was skilled in the arts of wizardry.
For many years he served as the royal astrologer of Queen Elizabeth I. He died in poverty in the year 1608.
Kronia – In ancient times, the Greek month of Hecatombion was also called Kronion, in honor of the old agricultural god Kronus, whose symbol was the reaper’s scythe. On the full moon (like the full moon of September which is also a Harvest Moon), the farm year ended with masters and slaves gathering to enjoy a harvest dinner together.
Obon Festival begins – Japanese Buddhist festival to honor the departed souls who return and share a life with us during these days. It is also called the Festival of the Lanterns, because of the colorful paper lanterns light the way. On the last day, the souls of the dead return and are given food offerings, accompanied by a silent, gliding circle dance, the bon-odori. Spirits with no relatives are honored with little boats bearing paper lanterns which are set afloat on the Tide of Returning Ghosts to drift out to sea. (Also celebrated in some places on Aug 13-15.)
Buddhist: Asala (Dhammacakka Day – Turning of the Wheel of Teaching) Buddhist observance of the day when Gautama Buddha made his first public proclamation to five ascetics. He taught the middle way, the noble eight-fold path and the four noble truths.
2003: Essex, England. Strange lights which floated and darted through the air were spotted in the skies over Cornwell Crescent in the town of Stanford-le-Hope at about 3:30 in the afternoon. The lights were caught on video by two witnesses. “I thought it was a UFO as there is no other explanation,” said one of the witnesses.

The first season is of a frigid complexion, and this is “Winter”;
The second is of the complexion of Air, and this is “Spring”;
Then follows the third, which is “Summer”, and is of the complexion of Fire;
Lastly, there is the fourth, wherein fruits are matured, which is “Autumn”.

Today’s Goddess: Scathach
Highland Games (Scotland)
Themes: Sports; Strength; Excellence; Kinship; Art; Tradition; Magic; Protection; Victory
Symbols: Tartan (plaids); Celtic Music
About Scathach: This Celtic Mother figure endows strength, endurance, and the ability to “go the distance” no matter our situation. In Scotland, she is also a Warrior Goddess who protects the land using magic as a weapon, as implied by the translation of her name, “she who strikes fear.” Warriors from around Scotland were said to have studied under Scathach to learn battle cries and jumping techniques (possibly a type of martial arts).
To Do Today: In Scotland, the second weekend in July marks the gathering of Scottish clans to revel in their heritage through numerous games of skill, strength, and artistry (including bagpipe competitions). If you have any Scottish or Celtic music, play it while you get ready to energize your whole day with Scathach’s perseverance. If you don’t have the music, for a similar effect find something to wear with a Scottish motif, like heather perfume, a plaid tie, things bearing the image of a thistle or sheep, or anything woolen.
To make a Scathach amulet to protect your home, car, or any personal possessions, begin with a piece of plaid cloth and put some dried heather in it (alternatively, put in several strands of woolen yarn). Tie this up and keep it where you believe her powers are most needed

Heartwings Love Notes 680: Wrinkles
Heartwings says, “Wrinkles only matter when they make us uncomfortable.”
The clothes I had hung outside on the porch were ready to bring in. I’d been delayed in hanging them up so my denim skirt that had been crunched in the washing machine had dried with its wrinkles intact. My first thought was, oh, now I’ll have to iron it. My second was no, nowadays wrinkles don’t seem to matter much. I laughed and hung it up.
Once an iron was an important household tool. From colonial days through Victorian ones, most homes had several flatirons. These would be heated on the ever burning cook stove or hearth. It was important to iron carefully because it was easy to scorch the white aprons, shawls or petticoats. Now heavy black iron flatirons are common in antique stores where they are sold for door stops.
I doubt many twenty-somethings own or have ever used an iron. Permanent press probably eliminated many commercial laundries. I remember my father took his shirts to a woman in town who washed who ironed them. Then wrinkles were considered the sign of a careless or sloppy person. What I don’t remember is at what point clothing wrinkles ceased to be important to eliminate.
Wrinkles in the skin, most especially facial wrinkles seem to be another matter. Try to find a woman’s magazine without ads for wrinkle removing cosmetics or cover-ups. Judging from the ads, women and even some men also spend lavishly on plastic surgery. This seems sad. To me frown, smile and other lines present a record of a person’s lifelong expressions as well as of their attitude toward what life has had to offer. Perhaps one day these wrinkles too will become more generally acceptable.
May you appreciate the record of your life that your face presents to the world.
Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert

The Yard Sale
It was a sunny Saturday Fourth of July and Caroline insisted her husband Alex join her and her friend Cindy for yardsaling.
“I’d rather stay here and put time into cataloguing my collection.“
You and your silly old replicas of historic documents! You heard what your doctor said. You need to be out in the sun more.”
“And besides,” he said. “How many yard sales will there be on the Fourth of July?“
“It’s just fun to get out and go looking. You never know what might turn up.”
Cindy arrived and they were off.
Their first stop was a few blocks away. Alex saw piles of men’s shoes and clothes. He stayed in the car reading his email. Carolina came over to the window. “There’s a man’s cashmere wool suit that’s your size. All its needs is dry-cleaning. It’s only seven dollars.”
“Sweetie,“ He smiled. “I don’t do used clothes. One of my few perks in life is going to Brooks Brothers.”
Caroline sighed. “What’s it going to take to get you out of the car?”
He smirked. “Maybe Benjamin Franklin’s autograph.”
“Go ahead be sarcastic.“
Cindy laughed. “Alex don’t tell me you’re as big a clothes snob as Donald?”
Two blocks later they stopped at an estate sale. Random sticks of furniture and household items cluttered the lawn and driveway. Cindy looked optimistic “Maybe I’ll find some pottery.”
“There’s books, Alex,“ Caroline said. “Looks like a mountain of paperbacks.”
He glanced over, smiled and went back to his email.
Twenty minutes later Caroline and Cindy loaded two cartons into the trunk and they were off.
“I wish you’d get out and stretch your legs,“ Caroline said. “I fear if you stay curled up in the back seat your hip will really start to hurt.”
That he heard. A few miles into the country, when they stopped at an old Victorian in need of paint he got out too.
The woman standing in the yard had dark eyes and long black hair. Alex thought she was oddly attractive, her fashion somewhat theatrical.
“Hello,“ she smiled. “Are you looking for anything in particular this morning?”
He chuckled. “Well,” he said keeping a straight face, “how about a copy of a signed letter from Benjamin Franklin to Thomas Jefferson containing his ideas for the Declaration of Independence?“
Were her eyes twinkling? “Hold on a minute let me go inside and check.” Alex waited by the door.
She came out holding a cardboard folder and handed it to him. “Maybe this will interest you.”
He couldn’t believe his eyes. “This is astounding. How did you ever get as authentic looking a copy as this?”
The paper was old and crinkly, the ink faded to sepia. The document was addressed to Thomas Jefferson and signed by Benjamin Franklin.
“My grandfather was a collector,“ she said. “I know nothing of this stuff and am sure you’ve got a better idea of its value than I do.” She smiled politely.
His hand shook, “Where did this come from?”
My grandfather’s desk.“
“You mean in there?” he pointed at the back door.“
“Oh there you are,” Caroline said. “I see you found something. I hoped you would.”
“She went in the house and brought this out.”
“Good,“ Caroline said. She smiled at the woman and opened her bag. “How much do you want for that?”
The woman smiled. “Whatever he thinks its worth. After all he asked if we had it.”
“Oh,“ Caroline turned to Alex. “Then tell me what you feel’s fair and I’ll give her cash.” She turned to the woman. “My husband is an absolutely honest man and would never cheat anyone.”
Are there other documents like this,“ Alex asked.
‘I’m not sure,” she said. “What else might you be looking for?”
He raised his eyebrows. “Some sort of correspondence from George Washington to John Adams and his reply.”
“Carolina looked at him oddly. “Alex what are you talking about?”
“Let me go see,“ she went back inside.
“Honey you don’t find things like that at a yard sale.”
She came back holding a cardboard folder similar to the first and handed it to him.
He looked and saw George Washington’s brazen signature, and then on the next watermarked sheet the twisted, faded scrawl of John Adams. The ink was brown, the paper old and fragile.“
“These are incredible replicas,” he said. “I’m so happy to have them for my collection.”
She smiled. “I’m glad they’re to your liking.”
“How about fifty dollars?“
The woman nodded. “Sure. If you feel that’s fair.”
Caroline handed her the cash. Clutching the folders Alex climbed into the back seat. Caroline got in; Cindy consulted the listings in the paper and they were off.
“There was something about that woman,“ Alex said. “She seemed other worldly.”
After several other yard sales Caroline said, “I’d like us to go back. Maybe she has other interesting replicas.”
Carefully she retraced her steps. But no road led to an old Victorian in need of paint. The house seemed to have vanished.
“What a pity it wasn’t listed,“ Cindy said. “How could it have disappeared like that?”
That night Alex and Caroline turned on the late news.
“This just in,“ the news anchor said: “Somehow this morning two national treasures: a rare letter from Benjamin Franklin to Thomas Jefferson and two items of correspondence between George Washington and John Adams were reported missing from the Smithsonian. A thorough investigation is underway. There are no leads.”
Caroline and Alex looked at one another.
“What a coincidence! You don’t think…“ Caroline said.
Alex shook his head. “No. Of course not.”
They both laughed, turned off the light and went to bed.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ Comfort-of-Home Spell
The Moon is in earthy Taurus today. This is an ideal time to relax with the comforts of home and family after the first day of the work week. Burn some sandalwood or myrrh incense, and put on your favorite music. Surround yourself with beauty as you change into your most beautiful and comfortable clothes. Trade back or foot massages with someone dear to you. Spend time brushing or caressing a pet. Take a bubble bath, or make some cocoa. Get your favorite food for takeout, and be sure to have dessert. Whatever you choose to do, make sure your senses are fully engaged in the luxury and pleasure of the experience. Be fully present and indulge yourself.

“The Goddess Companion”
In the beginning, the air and land were not separate, nor
were masculine and feminine split apart. All was one, like
an egg, full of potential and without limits. But slowly
earth, being heavier, settled out of heaven. At first it
floated about on the air, like a fish swimming near the
surface of the water, but finally it formed entirely and sank
beneath the heavens.
~Nihongi, Japanese Scriptures
In Japan, this is the great festival of Bon or O-Bon, the day of the dead, who have returned to that invisible and formless world that proceeded creation. Before the festival begins, all homes must be ritually cleaned. Then, a welcoming feast brings back the souls of the departed; a procession to the graveyard wakes them, then a torchlight procession leads them back home, where a feast is spread out. At these banquets, poets traditionally praised the sensuous beauties of the world, so that the dead could remember again their days on earth. Dances to honor the ancestors are performed by young women. Finally, gifts are offered to the dead, and they are sent back to sleep again in the graveyards. Those who died with no remaining relatives are honored with boats carrying paper lanterns, which are set adrift on rivers and lakes.
In the flourishing time of summer, such a festival is a good reminder of the inevitable end of all life. When the roses bloom, the tomatoes ripen red in the sun, and the air is full of fragrance ad song, it may seem that winter lives on another planet. In happy times, too, we can forget that pain is as much a part of life as joy. The wisdom of Japan reminds us of death in the midst of life and, conversely, of life in the midst of death.
