Upon the ferment of restless seas
You were born;
primordial as the sea.
Your realm is of pleasure and
the moment –ephemeral;
Your anger quick as a
summer storm and as quickly spent.
In loveliness of spirit all may
share in Your delight–
the Mystery is the ever loving Self–
Your flame burns bright in those
who love You–
Your rituals endure.
The silence of the dawn, and how it speaks to you.
In the Name of the Maiden: I will wear bright colors and think of myself as part of Your rainbow.
Thanks to The Bright Maiden for Thy care, for green laughter and fire edged dew, and
for Thy blessing, a most precious jewel.

In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

Seasons of the Witch – Legends and Lore, Ancient Holidays
And Some Not So Ancient!
Today Is …
Candalaria, Festival of Yemaya. Go swimming or put your feel in a tub of water.
On this date (approximately), The Sun enters the astrological sign of Cancer. Persons born under the sign of the Crab are said to be family and home-oriented, nurturing, sympathetic, and often very moody. Cancer is a water sign and is ruled by the Moon.
Festival Of Manifest Destiny.
The Flaming Of The Rose, the Christianized festival of ANAHIT, Armenia: The ancient Goddess of Chastity; sheep with gaily painted horns are led to church, with food & flowers piled at the altar.
St. Paulinus of Nola/Dance of the Lily – St Paulinus, along with other inhabitants of Nola, was supposedly kidnapped by the Vandals and taken to Africa in slavery, where a miraculous dream brought him to the attention of the King who ordered him freed and sent him and his countrymen home in boats. Upon their return they were met by the people of Nola carrying lilies in his honor. Ever since then his feast day is celebrated in Nola, a town about twenty miles from Naples, with the Dance of the Lily (The Giglio).
The lilies have become eight huge structures, covered with papier mache figures and big enough to carry brass bands. A galleon is also constructed to represent the boat that returned the Saint to Nola. They are carried about (or danced) by teams of men who put on a display of strength and acrobatic maneuvers, moving in perfect unison under their heavy burdens. A similar festival is held in Brooklyn on the first Sunday of July.
Scholars suggest that the festival derives from a pre-Christian summer festival celebrating the Greek god Dionysus. The story of St. Paulinus resembles the myth of Dionysus’s release and return from pirate captivity. Nola was once an ancient center of Dionysian worship. The phallic figure of the god, now replaced by the tower of the saint, was probably once the centerpiece of pagan fertility rituals. Dancing the giglio is a display of virility and power, as the half-naked men sweat and struggle to bear the enormous weight of the lilies and to out-dance each other. Goddess Of The Day: Saules Mate
Midsummer (Various Locations)
Themes: Sun: Prayer; Protection
Symbols: Sun: Fire; Yellow/Gold or Red Items; Horses; Birch
About Saules Mate: Saules Mate comes to us from Indo-European tradition, her name meaning, “sun.” Indeed, with the sun reaching its highest point today, she becomes the center of our festivities. Saules Mate crosses the sky during the day in a carriage drawn by yellow horses, then travels the waters by night in a golden birch boat, hanging a red scarf in the wind to give the sky its lovely color.
To Do Today: In magic traditions, we stop for a moment on this day to mark the sun’s halfway point through its annual journey. Traditionally, this is a time to harvest magical herbs, but do so before Saules Mate gets too bright in the sky; her heat diminishes the natural oils in the herbs. Remember to leave an offering for the goddess so she will empower these herbs–perhaps some ground birchwood that acts as plant mulch!
Purify yourself by jumping the ritual fire (or a candle) today, then burn a wish in Saules Mate’s fires to release it into her care. And use this invocation to Saules Mate for part of personal magic today (for the southern quarter of the magic circle):
Powers of the fire, reach ever higher.
Saules Mate, bring your light; the power ignite.
Salamanders prance in the magical dance,
By your power and my will, this sacred space fill!

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ Summer Solstice Spell
Today is one of the holiest days of the year. At first light, take a tall white or yellow candle and a short black candle outside; light them to symbolize the longest day
and shortest night of the year. A flower-scented incense is good to burn while you intone the words below:
Brother Sun and Mother Moon,
Day is longest now.
Energies of the brilliant Sun
Aid all at work
Or having fun.
A blessing is,
From rise to set supreme is the Sun.
Fueling growth and
Strong and true is the solar light.
And river flows,
As Earth is warmed and lighted.
Creative energy reaches zenith
on this day of shortest night.
Crops grow high and excitement grows,
with each new ray of Sun.
All creatures play
and hail the mighty Sun.
Honor the Sun and feed the light.
Druid, Indian, Norse, and Celt all danced
on Summer Solstice,
and solar flares
Wash away our hunger and our cares.
King of warmth,
Makes humans to frolic and bees to swarm.
Keep this day
In memory bright,
To warm you on long winter nights.
May the rays of solstice keep us warm,
All through the year.
The Sun has kissed
Flower field and tree,
The Sun is supreme.
So mote it be.

Heartwings Love notes 677: Fatherhood
Heartwings says, “Fathers are special and deserve to be recognized.”
On the third Sunday in June we celebrate Fathers and acknowledge their importance to us. Since 1908, when the first Fathers’ Day was declared their role in the lives of families has greatly changed. While there were exceptions, most fathers then had little to do with raising their young children. Even in the 50’s it was rare for one to change a diaper, bathe or feed a baby unless mom was not available. Today many young fathers can be seen carrying, cuddling, and playing with their toddlers.
According to Celebrations, The Complete Book of American Holidays by Robert J. Myers, the closest ancestor for Fathers’ Day is an ancient Roman festival called Parentalia. It lasted from the 13th of February to the 22nd. Not for living fathers it was a time for the remembrance of departed parents and kinsfolk. It was celebrated with a family reunion that began at the cemetery with offerings of milk, honey, oil and water at flower decorated graves. Afterward people went home, feasted and visited.
The first observance of both Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day in the US were in 1908. Both took place in churches in West Virginia, one in May and one in June, in two different towns. They were held to honor the fathers of the women who arranged for them. Over time, and with the efforts of a number of different people, the day finally became established. However Fathers’ Day took longer than Mothers’ Day to become official.
By 1911 there was no a state without a Mothers’ day observance. It was even celebrated in many other countries. Fathers’ Day, though celebrated on the third Sunday in June in a number of states did not become officially observed until President Richard Nixon signed a congressional resolution. Prior to that an annual proclamation was required by any state to have one.
Not every parent is able to fulfill his or her role perfectly, yet all do the best they can. Setting a good example is paramount. Young boys need to know that it is just as manly to change a diaper as it is to throw a baseball. The nurturing that comes from a father’s heart is as precious as that from a mother’s. Many young male children today will grow up with a better understanding of what it is to be a parent than they might have in prior generations. More than ever today, fatherhood and fathers deserve celebration.
On Fathers’ Day may you honor your father with love and gratitude.
Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert

Mr. Perkins Sports Car, Part 3
As church potlucks go this one wasn’t especially memorable. Like the other older congregants Mr. Perkins preferred the traditional ham and beans, or macaroon & cheese. The younger families rallied around organic kale chips and gluten free vegan casseroles.
For many members church was on a serious health kick and gluten free had become the battle cry for longevity. Not everyone agreed. Hiram Wilcox sat next to Henry. “So what if it was fattening? It sure tasted good.”
Mr. Perkins nodded politely. He hoped and prayed Margie wasn’t making a spectacle of herself.
Hiram shook his head and pushed his food around on his plate. “This kind of stuff takes some getting used to.” He looked around the hall. More than half the tables were empty.
“Supposed to keep us healthy so we’ll live longer.“ The woman sitting across from them said. “Personally, I miss my English muffins in the morning.”
Thinking he heard something Henry looked around. Yes, her confounded giggle. At least Margie was here somewhere and not sitting on the minister’s lap undoing his tie.
“What was really hard was saying good bye to coffee.“ She dabbed a kale chip in hummus and smiled at him. “You’re Henry Perkins. Hello. I’m so glad to finally meet you. I’m Belle Starr.”
He smiled back, appreciating her candor. Attractive, he thought. “What better place to meet a new friend than here at church. Do you mean the outlaw queen, the one who played poker and rustled cattle, that Belle Starr?”
But Wilcox still needed to be heard. “What frosts me is no more seeded rye or those thick black Russian loaves Charley always used to bring.”
Mrs. Wilcox leaned in. “Before the good Lord took him home.”
“Charlie was quite overweight,“ Belle said. She looked at Hiram. “I’ll bet you’re not snoring nearly as much now that you and Evelyn are off wheat.”
His face reddened. “Who said I snore?” He glared at his wife.
Belle looked at Henry. “You know about my famous relative?”
“Oh yes,“ he said. “I find myself fascinated by controversial women who made their way into history.”
“Then you must like revolutionary women in your life.“ She grinned.
“Only to read about.” He smiled. “I could never imagine being involved with anyone even remotely controversial.”
The lights flickered momentarily. Oh, oh, Henry thought.
“I’m glad to finally have a chance to meet you,” Belle said. “We have a mutual friend in Maga Fortune, Zeke’s ex wife. I knew her from the craft shows at the Senior Center.”
He chuckled. “I hope you didn’t buy one of her wallets.”
“I heard,“ Belle said. She looked at him searchingly. “Your mind seems preoccupied. I can tell. Does that classic red roadster of yours have something to do with what you’re thinking about?”
He nodded, half expecting her to be critical of his owning a car like that at his age. But instead she said. “How about giving me a ride home. My friend never showed up. Besides, I really love riding in vintage sports cars.”
He nodded. “Yes, But I must warn you it’s not your typical sports car.”
“Oh I know,“ she said softly. “It’s got esctoplasmic goop all over it.”
“It’s haunted.” She grinned. “According to what I remember from Ghostbusters ghosts have a fixed location in certain parts of a house, public building or even in cars. Their presence can manifest an esctoplasmic goop.”
“I can see in houses or public buildings but in cars?“
“Not so far fetched if that’s where you were when you died.”
He gulped. “Margie had said an accident. Now that makes sense. Aside from that movie how do you know about all this?”
“Sometimes I chat with the real Belle Star. She’s not just my namesake. We’re in contact. She’s told me some amazing things about the afterlife.“
Henry found this woman fascinating and fun.
“There’s much more to her than history has let on.”
Again the lights flickered. Henry sighed.
Belle and Henry’s looked around. On the other side of the hall. A cluster of children were talking excitedly. One little boy pointed upward.
Belle and Henry left their table and drifted over.
“Look,“ the little boy said. He waved at the far wall. “See the angel?”
“Ohh,“ said a little girl. “I see her. She’s all floaty up there.”
“I see her too, she’s smiling,” another boy said.
“And she’s waving,“ said another.
“Come on Margie,” Mr. Perkins said softly. “It’s time to go home.”
“Oh but I’m having so much fun. I didn’t know little children could see me like you can.“
“Hello Margie. I’m Belle.” She waved. “I can see you too.”
One of the mothers came over.
“Look mom, see the angel?“
“What angel, dear? There’s no picture of an angel there.”
“No mom, not a picture, a real angel. We all saw.“
The other children nodded shyly.
The mother took her daughter firmly by the wrist and marched her toward the door. “Quiet now. Don’t talk about things like that. Angels live in heaven. ”
Henry beckoned to Margie. “Please come on. We’re leaving.”
She pouted. “Oh all right. I’ll see you in the car.”
Henry went to say good night to Rosemary and Hannah.
“I have a ride with Rosemary,“ Hannah said quickly.
On their way out Mr. Perkins filed Belle in about Margie.
“I often see spirits,” she said.
“Oh my,“ Mr. Perkins chuckled. “A gluten free medium. Then you’ll never become a large.”
She laughed and slid into his bucket seat.“
“I do thank you for the ride Henry.”
“It’s my pleasure. I enjoy talking to you. Maybe you’d like to stop back at my house for some iced tea, or if you’d prefer sherry?“

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ Herbal Bug Repellent Pillow
You can make a bug repellent pillow for a cat or dog by adding equals amounts of Lavender flowers, Cedarwood chips and Pennyroyal herb (NOT THE OIL), to the stuffing of a pillow or small homemade pet mattress. If you are substituting essential oils for the dried herbs, us ONLY 5 drops TOTAL to pillow or mattress and again AVOID PENNYROYAL OIL. I know that Penny royal oil is used in many animals recipes but I feel that it is too strong to be used directly on an animal.
Also AVOID using Citrus Oils. While they are an ingredient in many flea repellents, they are used highly diluted. I once witnessed a small kitten go into convulsions after an unsuspecting owner applied orange oil to its fur. I would not use pure essential oils on young kittens and dogs. I tend to use homeopathy with my cats and seldom have the need to use essential oils on them.

“The Goddess Companion”
Rise, let us go
to meet the Sabbath,
source of blessings,
purring from the past.
Thought is the beginning,
action is the ending.
Come and rise,
come meet the Sabbath.
~Sabbath Service Song
Even in religions based on male divinities, there is often a feminine presence hiding, in folklore or tradition or ritual. In Judaism, one of these quasi-goddesses is the Sabbath. Celebrated as the Sabbath Queen or the Sabbath Bride, this personification of the day of rest is greeted each week as though she were an actual woman – greeted, and welcomed into the home, where she performs such archetypally feminine functions as knitting the family into a tighter bond.
When we look for the Goddess, we are often searching for a quality we find missing in our lives – qualities frequently connected with the feminine sphere of life, which has been diminished in prestige just as the Goddess has. But just like the Goddess, the vital functions of women traditionally perform retain some of their sacred qualities, no matter how debased. Each time we set a table lovingly for our friends, or turn down a bed for a child, or listen to a sister’s laments, we are bringing the Goddess into our lives again.
