In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

The Year Is Divided Into Four Seasons:
The first season is of a frigid complexion, and this is “Winter”;
The second is of the complexion of Air, and this is “Spring”;
Then follows the third, which is “Summer”, and is of the complexion of Fire;
Lastly, there is the fourth, wherein fruits are matured, which is “Autumn”.

Today Is …

Day of Maia: Originally a Star Goddess, later older sister of the Pleiades, our name for this month comes from Her. Find the Pleiades in the sky tonight. Their reappearance heralded the coming of the growing season to the ancient Celts.

River God of the Tiber: On this date in ancient times, the Romans performed an annual purification rite consisting of the “sacrifices” of twenty-seven straw puppets to the River God of the Tiber.

Greece: Festival of Maia – in honor of the Goddess Maia of the full moon. Maia is one of the seven sisters known as the Pleiades.

Rome: Mercuralia, the Festival of Mercury. Rites would be performed at the Temple of Mercury in Rome in which those who desired his favors would sprinkle their heads, their ships and merchandise, and their businesses with water taken from the well at Porta Capena.

1995 – Archaeologists discover the largest tomb in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt; it is believed to the resting place for the sons of Ramses II.

In the ancient Roman calendar, this day was sacred to the Goddess Maia (For whom May is named) and also to Vesta, goddess of the hearth and all sacred fires. On this day Vesta’s devotees, the Vestal Virgins, offered prayers to request an adequate supply of water for the coming summer months. The festival of Maia was always observed a week before the entry of the Sun into Gemini, ruled by Maia’s son Mercury (Hermes).

In the ancient Egyptian calendar, the month of Epipi, sacred to the protective Cobra Goddess Wadjet, begins with festivals of Hathor and Bastet. In contrast to the preceding month of Payni, Epipi is a markedly feminine-centered month which celebrates above all the female forces of latent vitality and continuity in nature; and the critical importance of Truth, embodied by the Goddess Ma’at, in all universal order. Some of the May events in the dramatic month-long festival cycle that now begins

St Dympna – Matron saint of the mentally ill, this obscure 7th century Irish princess has a shrine in Gheel, just east of Antwerp in Belgium, where people have come for centuries seeking healing from mental illness. The whole town is a sort of mental hospital without walls. On Dympna’s feast day, there is a procession to the saint’s tomb. Rufus, Anneli, The World Holiday Book, Harper San Francisco 1994

St Isidore – This 11th century Spanish saint, who spent his whole life working in the fields, is the patron of farmers and Madrid.
He is usually depicted wearing blue pants and a cape, a sack slung over one shoulder, kneeling in prayer while an angel plows the land behind him with a pair of white oxen. In the Vodou tradition, he is associated with Asaka, the “Minister of Agriculture,” who wears a blue denim shirt and a broad-brimmed straw hat, and carries a straw satchel, the typical garb of a peasant farmer in Haiti.

St Isidore is also the patron of plough-pulling animals. Filipinos honor their primary beast of burden, the water-buffalo, on this holiday by garlanding the animals with flower and marching them to church to be blessed. Afterward they race the animals across the fields, then gather for a feast. Every house features a pahiya, a lush arrangement of coconut, sugar cane, pineapple, banana, cookies and candies made of steamed, tinted and hardened rice shaped like leaves. At the end of the day, the pahiya is given away for good luck. Brown, Karen McCarthy, Mama Lola: A Vodou Priestess in Brooklyn, University of California Press 1991

Goddess Of The Day:  Fire Woman
Barbecue Festival (Kentucky)

Themes:  Sun; Fire; Family; Love
Symbols: Fire;Hearth:(Stove/Grill)

About Fire Woman: Since the United States is a melting pot of culture, we turn to the Fire Woman of Borneo to instruct us in making fires by rubbing wood together, followed by subsequent lessons in cookery!  Today she continues her warming ways by teaching us how to keep lovin’ in the oven!

To Do Today:  Cook outdoors!  Fire Woman, by her very nature, is part of that grill or hibachi.  I must confess this festival is included for my sake, since weekend barbecues are my summer fire rituals.  Kentucky is considered the barbecue capital of the world (they’ve never been to Buffalo), and over the course of this festival in a town by the name of Owensboro, over ten tons of meat will be cooked and consumed, as the day takes on the ambiance of a huge “family” picnic.

In choosing your menu, think either hot, spicy foods to emphasize Fire Woman’s fiery aspect or foods that metaphysically engender love.  One combination that stresses both is strawberry-garlic grilled chicken (add crushed berries to honey, ginger, and garlic for a sauce).  Vegetarians can use this sauce on potatoes or shitake mushrooms instead.

If you don’t have time for a barbecue, light any candle briefly sometime today to honor Fire Woman and draw her loving energy into your home.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ Sedona Vortex Stone

Properties: famous for its energy centers or vortex, Sedona has become a magnet for those seeking powerful enlightenment and a spiritual presence. These amazing stones pulse with energy! My stones have been gathered at the Cathedral Rock Vortex. This vortex, also lovingly referred to as “mama rock”, has a compassionate, nurturing, feminine energy that engulfs you when you work with these stones.

Cathedral Rock Vortex is famous for sacred Native ceremonies of the heart, as well as weddings. Referred to as the “Cathedral without walls” this magnetic vortex has concentrated energy rising from the earth. You feel a range of sensations from a slight tingling on exposed skin, or a vibration emanating from the ground, but most often this vortex is felt by a palpable sensation across the nape of the neck and the shoulders.

This amazing red stone has a warm and grounding energy to it. It connects to our Root Chakra, brings about sensations of fire, desire, awakening and power. Each ancient stone comes with its history, how to use it as an energy tool, a related meditation, as well as how to cleanse, care and nuture it.

Because of Isis, there is heaven.
Because of Isis, there is an earth.
Because of Isis, winds blow on the desert.
Because of Isis, the sweet sun shines.
Because of Isis, the river floods in spring.
Because of Isis, plants bear fruit.
Because of Isis, we live and grow strong.
Because of Isis, we have breath to give thanks.
~Egyptian Prayer To Isis

For most of human history, spring has been a difficult time. Certainly, the weather is easier than several months ago; the winter storms no longer blow and the light is stronger. But food stocks, from the previous year’s harvest, would have been perilously low for our foremothers in spring. Cleansing fasts, such as those celebrated through the Christian season of Lent, were as much a necessity as a discipline, for there was not much left in the storehouses, and the new season’s crops had not yet borne their fruits.

Yet it was still a season for gratefulness, for hope spring up with each new sprout that emerged from the wintry earth. Even in the midst of want and hunger, the sight of new growth is a happy one. In our times of need, we can remember the promise of spring’s green – and it can help us find hope again within us.
