In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. You may want to begin or end your day by the sacred ritual of lighting a candle on this gratefulness. Or you may want to light a birthday candle for a friend. One single guideline is all you need: Slow down and do it with full attention.

Today Is …

Floralia, Roman Festival of Flora – Goddess of Prostitutes. She was secretly known as “Mother of Rome.” Celebrate your knowledge of Her sexual secrets.

St. Zita – If you frequently misplace your keys, you probably need to know about St Zita, who is invoked for help finding keys, apparently because she was a sanctimonious Italian serving girl who frequently gave away her master’s bread (and even his fur cloak) to beggars. Apparently she also misplaced his keys from time to time. During her ecstasies, angels baked her bread, so she is also the patron of bakers, housewives and servants
Blackburn, Bonnie and Leofranc Holford-Strevens, Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford University Press, 1999

Africa: In the African republic of Mali, a mythical half-man, half-animal being called Tyi Wara is honored by farmers on this date with songs and dance. The Bambara tribe believe that Tyi Wara was send to Earth by the Nature Gods to each human beings the necessary skills of farming.

Voudun: Dan Wè Zo, alias St Louis Cleimeille

Goddess of The Day: Mati-Syra-Zemlya
Landsgemeinden (Switzerland)

Themes:  Community; Divination; Promises; Justice; Morality
Symbols:  Oil; Soil

About Mati-Syra-Zemlya:  This Goddess’s name means “moist mother”, alluding to her fertile aspects.  She attends today’s festivities to hear oaths and witness legal decisions that may affect the rest of the year.  Any promise or sentence made with one hand on the earth, or in her name, is completely binding.  In some areas her motherly nature is expressed through healing qualities, while in others she has prophetic ability.  An appropriate gift for her is hemp oil.

To Do Today:  This is a civic-oriented holiday during which people gather to conduct regional business, including voting, budgets, and tax proposals.  It’s a very old custom adorned with lavish clothing, ceremonial swords, and I suspect, an eavesdropping goddess (just to keep everyone honest).  If you need to tie up some pending business, work on your personal budget, or balance the checkbook, honor Mati-Syra-Zemlya and draw her ethical energies to you by getting busy!

Alternatively, if you’ve been thinking about getting more involved with your local or magical community, make a commitment to Mati-Syra-Zemlya to start making efforts in that direction.  Simply place a hand on the ground and speak your pledge to her ears.  The Goddess will respond by giving you the time and energy needed to fulfill that commitment.

Control ~ Letting the Curves Take You

The answer to control is practicing surrender.

Trying to maintain control in this life is a bit like trying to maintain control on a roller coaster. The ride has its own logic and is going to go its own way, regardless of how tightly you grip the bar. There is a thrill and a power in simply surrendering to the ride and fully feeling the ups and downs of it, letting the curves take you rather than fighting them. When you fight the ride, resisting what’s happening at every turn, your whole being becomes tense and anxiety is your close companion. When you go with the ride, accepting what you cannot control, freedom and joy will inevitably arise.

As with so many seemingly simple things in life, it is not always easy to let go, even of the things we know we can’t control. Most of us feel a great discomfort with the givens of this life, one of which is the fact that much of the time we have no control over what happens. Sometimes this awareness comes only when we have a stark encounter with this fact, and all our attempts to be in control are revealed to be unnecessary burdens. We can also cultivate this awareness in ourselves gently, by simply making surrender a daily practice. At the end of our meditation, we might bow, saying, “I surrender to this life.” This simple mantra can be repeated as necessary throughout the day, when we find ourselves metaphorically gripping the safety bar.

We can give in to our fear and anxiety, or we can surrender to this great mystery with courage. When we see people on a roller coaster, we see that there are those with their faces tight with fear and then there are those that smile broadly, with their hands in the air, carried through the ride on a wave of freedom and joy. This powerful image reminds us that often the only control we have is choosing how we are going to respond to the ride.

Healing Arts and Pagan Studies ~ Beltane May Pole Candles

You will need:
Lots of pretty ribbons
Tall white or green pillar candle
Gold or brass “Craft Bells”
Candle holder (stand)

Cut lengths of ribbon around 18 inches each, in pretty Springtime colors.(pastels)
Tie a craft bell to each end of ribbon (a tooth pick helps this process) Tie ribbons starting
at ¾ way down the pillar candle, knot three times, don’t tie bows, you need lots of length
on the ribbons. Tie as many as you like snaking your way up the candle, but leave at least
¼ candle bare. Place in a candle stand that will raise the candle about 6 – 8 inches, so the
ribbons can “drape” Swirl the bundle of ribbons so they face East, ready to greet the dawn on
Beltane morn. Light candle and cheer the Spring time blessings to come. Keep a “safe” eye on
candle & ribbons.

This is a time when our lives can renew themselves. Spring energy can attract new openings, whether in love or in work or in simple pleasure. Open yourself to the energies around you. Honor the journey toward the future upon which we embark every day. The Goddess is within you as well as all around you. She is your witness as you move toward your destiny.

Heartwings Love Notes 669 Rewards

Heartwings says, “rewards are important, not only for adults but also for the child within us all.”

Remember when teachers handed out gold stars for rewards? Perhaps they still do, however in today’s politically correct climate they might not. Not being in school, I have no idea. All I know is that rewards are as important to me now as they were to me as a child. When I have worked hard, done a good job by my own standards, or fulfilled an obligation, I like to find a way to reward myself.

At times a reward can function as a kind of bribe. Most often it can be a reminder to me that I love myself and honor my efforts. I didn’t grow up in a household that rewarded a child for good behavior. What usually happened was that I was punished if I didn’t behave properly. Those were other days and times. Today’s parents have learned from Dr. Spock and others to raise their children differently.

I like to treat myself as if I were my own kind parent. What that means is that I pat myself on the back when I have done a good job, or praise myself for whatever effort I might have put out even if I wasn’t successful in my attempt. Sometimes i reward myself by going for a walk or reading a book, at other times I might buy a small treat I’ve been wanting. I try not to make food a reward because I don’t need extra calories. It took me a while to understand the importance of doing that, and once I did it made a great difference

My favorite reward is time to do something I enjoy, whether reading a book, taking a walk in nature, or writing or working on a poem. I feel as though it is important to show myself love because it is my understanding that the more I love myself the more love I can feel from those around me. Rewarding myself is a way I have of showing myself love. It feels good, and it also helps me be a happier, more giving person.

May you too find wonderful ways to reward yourself on a daily basis.

Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert

The Table

Once upon a time a Sultan in an ancient kingdom bade his magician to manifest a table to materialize those delicacies requested by the women of his harem. Such a novelty will certainly amuse them, he thought.

The magician labored, testing spells until he succeeded and presented the table to his master.

The Sultan waved his hand. An array of Turkish Delights appeared. He laughed and thought of exotic pastries. Assorted chocolate rum balls and other delightful treats filled the table.

The women of his harem appreciated this spontaneous feast. Ooing and ahing they gathered around the table, pushing and shoving to get at the magnificent array. For days until they could hardly move they stuffed themselves to bursting.

The magician frowned. It had not been his intention to provoke such greed. In anger he raised his hands. Suddenly a great wind roared through the palace, whirling away the table along with many other treasures, not to mention the magician, the Sultan and his ladies.

Some time later a fisherman and his wife were walking on a beach. “What’s that?” cried the woman, seeing the edge of something glistening in the sun.

Together they dug out a round, jewel encrusted table.

“This must be worth a fortune,“ the fisherman said. He looked upward to the heavens and gave his thanks. His wife clapped her hands in appreciation. She was hungry. A platter of fish and assorted roasted vegetables appeared.

“We must take this table home,” she said. Every day they feasted.

Each day the fisherman would sail out to place his nets for his daily catch.

Each day his wife relaxed at home instantly gratified by whatever she thought to eat. Soon the fisherman noticed changes in his wife’s body: she no longer resembled the women he had married. Her cheeks were reddened, rounded, her body bloated.

One afternoon as his wife was stuffing herself with pastries the fisherman came home. He looked at her sadly. “Why must you eat so much?” he asked. Suddenly from out of nowhere a devastating storm blew through the hut and swept it out to sea, never to be seen again.

Later still, in a sand pit near the ocean in southern California a young man saw a wooden leg sticking out of the sand. He pulled on it. A round jeweled encrusted table emerged. He took the table home, cleaned it and marveled at its incredible beauty.

The young man was a poverty stricken student whose hunger was hardly ever satisfied. “Oh for a  filling meal ” he wished aloud. “That I may feel full after so long a time eating so very little.” To his amazement a healthy feast appeared, with far more food than he could eat by himself.

The student called his friends and invited them to join him in this feast bestowed by divine providence. Soon his apartment was filled with many more friends than he ever had had before, and the table produced an endless array of delicious food which they devoured unceasingly.

One day as the couch, chairs and every available space overflowed with bloated, sated students and friends, the young student looked around. “What has become of you all,” he said. “This is not right!” Suddenly the skies darkened.  A gigantic storm arose and swept through the building. The table vanished into the turbulence.

Meanwhile in a far away kingdom a young Prince read with wonderment of the exploits of his great ancestor who was said to have possessed an enchanted jewel encrusted table forever replenished with food.

“Could this be so?“ He inquired of his advisors. “Could such a magical table exist and if so what has become of it?  Surely this must be a true wonder of the ancient world.”

“Myth,“ cried several of his top advisors.

“No doubt the presence of such a table is intended to teach valuable lessons.”

His advisors agreed that this mythic jeweled table could never have existed, relegating it to the stuff of dreams and magical tales.

When the Prince read in a newspaper of a table that had fed many students before it had disappeared in a great storm, his hopes were revived. Quickly he dispatched his most trusted advisors to find it. “I am sure this must be the table of legend. Certainly it belongs to me!” he said,“and to me it must be returned.”

His advisors found only the sad students lamenting the disappearance of the table they had so loved.

The advisors searched but found nothing. They returned empty handed to their Prince, who sighed and shook his head.

For many the story ended here. However, on a far distant Pacific island a blind woman was walking on the beach searching for driftwood. Her hand brushed the top of the table. Excited she pulled it out and dragged it back to where she lived.

“What a fine gift,“ she said, grateful for her good fortune.

“Now if only I had a cup of tea and a slice of bread to sustain me,” she said. She reached out. Her hand touched the warm bread. Groping, she felt the cup of hot tea. Each day she made the same humble request. Each day the table obliged, and so for the remainder of her days she lived more comfortably than she had before in her little home by the sea.

Here are some little trinkets, Goddess, because
I know you love baubles, and I want you to smile.
Here are some cakes, Aphrodite, sweet ones
for a sweet Goddess. I hope these make you happy.
And me? Oh, I want little in return: only your gaze,
watching me as I travel to my lover. Only your gaze,
shining like a star or the sun on my path, as I move
between ports through my life, searching for love.
~Greek Offering Prayer To Aphrodite

Following yesterday’s festival, when they expressed fear at their vulnerability in the face of agricultural blight, the ancient Romans brightened their moods with another festival. The Floralia celebrated a love Goddess, Flora, in games and parades. Goats and hares, emblems of spring’s lustful energies, ran through the city street, and people threw beans at each other, symbols of renewal.
